Great diet, confusing book........2007-10-17

I only give the book 4 stars because the diet is soooo good. The book though is very biased and confusing. If I had read this book first, I never would have attempt the Master Cleanse. Fortunately for me, I read Peter Glickman's "Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition" first. Which descibes this diet in a way easy for skeptics (such as myself) as well as offers a number of detox symptons from the diet and questiosn/suggestions from Glickman's bulletin board: therawfoodsite.com/mastercleanse.htm
Overall, this diet is the best I have ever attempted. But this book is less than clear. If you do buy this book, buy it combination with Glickman's book and make use of his website if you have questions/problems.

I lasted 7 days!!!.......2007-10-15

Diets never work for me. But this did. I have no willpower. I hate exercise. I eat french fries and cookies almost every other day. On this, I lost a pound a day. Was totally bored but never hungry. Woke up without needing an alarm clock...lots of energy and clarity. If you can get past the 'social' aspects of eating, you'll be good.

I am dreaming of maple syrup.......2007-10-08

I just finished a 30 plus day cleanse. All I had was a brew of maple syrup, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and water. The hardest part of the cleanse was not hunger. What I found hardest was the monotony of the above mentioned beverage. For the first 10 days it tasted fine. For the next 10 days it tasted less fine. For the 10 days after that it tasted horrible.

Why did I do the cleanse in the first place? I have bladder cancer. And as anybody knows who has cancer, there is no shortage of suggestions about how to cure cancer. Suggestions come from friends, family members, casual acquaintances, and even total strangers who overhear conversations. The suggestions range from the helpfully obvious, such as, "You should probably not make Doritos the mainstay of your diet," to the near cruel, "If you loved yourself more, you would be cured."

Now, before I continue, I want anyone who has read this far to know that I posted this review in my blog also. One of the reasons I am writing reviews is because it was suggested as a good way to market my book, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." I want to make every keystroke, so to speak, count. One thing I have learned from cancer is to make each move count. There may be no tomorrow. Also, I believe in full disclosure.

Anyway, like many people with cancer, I tend not to talk about it because I get tired of the suggestions. But two friends of mine repeatedly suggested this cleanse. They are both advocates of alternative healing. And, even though I find myself excusing myself to run urgent errands whenever they talk about my eating habits, I love and respect them both.

What sold me on the cleanse was what one of my friends said. We were driving in the car in the mountains near her home, chatting about this and that. Suddenly the tone of her voice changed, and I knew I would hear something about a healthy lifestyle. "That cleanse we were talking about the other day, your body will begin to digest itself, and the theory is that the cancer cells will be digested, literally."

She had me. I am not a scientist. But that made sense. I had pretty much decided that Bill must die, Bill being the cancer. So, off I went on the cleanse, pretty much feeling like an old-west, quasi-Buddhist gunslinger. My body wasn't big enough for me and the cancer. One of us had to go. Either I would starve or the cancer would starve. By day 20, people were really beginning to be impressed. By day 30, I was being deified. But, honestly, it wasn't that hard. I'm sure that those fellows who climbed that little mountain felt the same way. Mt Everest, I think it was.

I had been aiming for 40 days, but I quit on day 33. And the reason I quit was because I found my 40-day goal becoming a little bit of an obsession. To quit, believe it or not, took much more will than to continue. As I said, I am a quasi-Buddhist, if there is such a thing, and I practice relinquishing strong attachments. I am, as a rule, much happier when I am not ruled by my attachments. And the cleanse was quickly becoming my master. I was no longer doing the cleanse; it was doing me.

You can find many variations of The Master Cleanse, usually for sale, on the internet. My own advice is to listen to your body. Do not get stubborn. On the other hand, the first three days really is the hardest; although, day 29 was hard too. The key is to drink plenty of lemonade, as it is called, because it will keep you from getting hungry. If you're worried about doing something so drastic, then see your doctor. But do not be surprised if your doctor looks at you as though you are a new age, hippie, weirdo when you mention The Master Cleanse. When I investigated this cleanse on the internet, I found only negative comments about it from the medical establishment.

But, as my mother used to say, "The proof is in the pudding." Is the cancer gone? I do not know. Nor, will I until my next exam. But I know I lost weight, a lot of weight. And I know I have more energy than I have had in a long, long time. I feel great. I'm planning on doing it again soon. But first I need to implement a healthy diet of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and Doritos. And for some reason I want some pudding. Maybe chocolate pudding. Or maybe custard. How about rice pudding?

I felt great putting this into practice but I was still hungry. However, I did notice I had a lot more energy. The lemonade tastes awesome.

Comprehensive and well-written.......2007-01-10

This is good reading material for anyone considering a career as a music teacher/educator. I was a student at Oberlin under these four professors and they have done a superb job of bring it all together. After six years of teaching in the real world, I am glad to have experienced this broad and comprehensive view of music education through their guidance. The whole universe is organized on patterns that are set by the Lord of the Worlds. Nothing is chaotic or astray, even when they appear to be so. This book is a must for all shippers! (You know who you are!) The episodes with shippy (is that even a word?) scenes are marked with a Phwoar! Although I have never heard that word used before, it has become my favorite!

Phwoar! I cracked up through most of this, and I learned quite a bit about the series. The authors are opinionated, to be sure, but that's not always bad. A new way of looking at the old obsession.

This is an excellent way to keep track of the episodes. I love the "Phwoar" section. I never skip over "The Bottom Line" section. It helps viewers understand each episode, in all its glory. Adds a laugh, too.

Of all the X Files episode guides, I think this has more meat--good information, not a big book o' pictures--than many on the market. It is also affordable, and provides complete synopsis right through mid 4th season.

I really like the trivia and continuity sections for putting the episodes of the x-files in order in my head. I often skipped the Bottom Line section, because the authors lost me there. And I would dearly love to know the meaning and other uses of the expression "phwoar!"

When I bought a new computer recently, I was glad to see WordPerfect and Quattro Pro offered by the manufacturer for a change, but I hadn't used the programs since early versions for Windows. So, I picked up this book to get up to speed and I couldn't be more pleased.

Laura Acklen is a gifted teacher and writer. The book is well-organized, taking you through the process of getting things done, while introducing you to the incredible depth of WordPerfect - what a great word processor! Although geared to those new to WordPerfect, the book doesn't shy away from covering more advanced features, such as using graphics or templates, and goes beyond the "point here, click that" of many software books. The book is also fun without being silly.

I particularly appreciated the chapters covering Quattro Pro. They were just what I needed to get me going again with this great spreadsheet program. In two days, I was impressing our neighborhood group with tables and charts of neighborhood statistics.

I highly recommend this book to anyone new to WordPerfect and Quattro Pro or anyone, who like me, has come home to these programs with which I used to love to work. Cheers for Reveal Codes!

Absolute necessity for beginners and others.......2003-03-09

I just came back to Word Perfect after my iMac died suddenly, and was intrigued with all the advances I'd missed. The WP tutorials and tips are very helpful, but still I had questions and needed more. Sometimes you just want to study the information from a good book, and this is that book. The author treats the reader with respect, knowing that some are just turning on the computer and others are more knowledgeable. The instructions are clear, logical and address "real life" uses. As a special bonus, the author writes well and has a good sense of humor. I feel as if I'm taking a kind of class with this book, and, believe it or not, it's fun!

Perfect for new users.......2003-03-04

I found this book after I got a bought computer with WP and Quattro Pro on it. I love it! It's perfect for a newbie like me who wasn't even sure how to start the program. I was surprised to see how much information the book had about working with tables and graphics and setting up a mail merge. I even learned how to keep all my names and addresses in address books and then use them in a mail merge. I plan to create my own cards and holiday greeting letters and send them out to my friends and family with a mail merge.

I don't know much about spreadsheets, but since I got Quattro Pro for free, I thought I might learn how to use it for my family's budget. The book has three bonus chapters that got me up and running in no time. There is a great section in the book that explains where to go for more help. I found the newsgroups and a great place called WordPerfect Universe where I can go to ask questions when I get stuck.

The book is easy to read and there are lots of illustrations to help you follow along. I've gained a lot of confidence in just a few weeks. I highly recommend this book to new users who want to get up and running quickly, but who also want to learn how to use some of the "advanced" features.
