Book 1 started slow for me. I'm use to books taking place in the US so some of the words were hard to say but by the time I was through the 2nd chapter I was hooked. I read book 2 and that was great and am looking forward to starting on book 3.
No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.......2007-05-09
Great series of books. Quick read, interesting setting and characters.
Looking forward to reading the additional books in the series.
The titles in this collectio are..........2007-04-04
Nowhere in any description or review of this boxed set could I find a list of the books, so here they are: 1) The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency 2)Tears of the Giraffe 3)Morality for Beautiful Girls 4)The Kalahari Typing School for Men 5)The Full Cupboard of Life
This is a wonderful collection; heartwarming, sweet, and simply written. One of the few series (along with Jan Karon's Mitford books and James Herriot's non-fiction veterinary set)suitable for young readers as well as adults. I highly recommend these books and hope that you read them soon!
GIFT.......2007-03-18
It was a gift. I have not heard anything about its value or its arrival.

Use the 2003 DiRoNA Guide as your passport to the very best restaurants in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Customer Reviews:
For the experienced diner.......2003-01-06
This Guide is so incredibly handy. When travelling on business I always take the Guide along to guarantee a fine dining experience for me and my clients. It has never steered me wrong that is why I've also purchased it for clients who, like me, travel often or who enjoy fine dining, fine wines, etc. Excellent resource. Impressive gift. Nothing like Zagats -- this is fine dining. The only problem with it -- I understand there are MORE Dirona restaurants around the country but they are not listed in the directory. That's too bad.

Are you clewed-up about all those expressions that so enrich the language of sailors – not to mention the landlubbers who have Shanghaied their vocabulary? Do you know Captain Setab’s Second Law of Dynamics, or why timbers shiver, even in horse latitudes, where a brass monkey has nothing to fear? This little book, chock-a-block with the wit and wisdom of a Captain who came up through the hawse pipe to command one of the most famous vessels afloat, gives you the whole nine yards.

Funny, interesting and informative.......2006-02-11
This book is great. It is funny, interesting and very informative. I never knew so many of our everyday phrases and termology dirived their origins from our sea faring history. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would highly recommend it.
Book Description
One of the greatest white blues guitarists to ever come out of England, Peter Green founded Fleetwood Mac with John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Considered an enigma as well as a great musician, he quit the band in the early 1970s, giving up fame and leaving behind original songs that have proved timeless. This fully authorized biography, by Green's close associate, reveals exactly why this happened. Exclusive interviews with fellow guitarists and musicians, as well as dozens of photographs are included.
Customer Reviews:
A CHORE to get through.......2005-10-06
Reading this book was hard work, and pretty irritating to get through. It is written by an Englishman and is strictly for English audiences. Practically every page contains slang, colloquialisms and references to people, places, and things that have no meaning to Americans at all. The writing style is also confusing, going back and forth with the subject at hand so you constantly have to go back to figure out who said what about who when etc. NOT a pleasant read. I am a great Peter Green fan so I muddled through. The author is obviously not a musician either, not very insightful commentary on music or musicians. Lots of anecdotal hero worship, which according to Peter's history and interviews is exactly what he does not want. Hard to believe this is the authorised biography.
Nice, objective effort.......2003-11-06
Celmins pretty much lays out such facts as he could glean from acquaintances. The dismal story of how the shrinks blew apart Green's nervous system is not told, probably because Celmins couldn't find them or couldn't get them to talk. Celmins does not write the introduction to this third edition, so he may not even be with us anymore (Alan Clayson has the duty now). Well written and a fascinating read because the reader must decide. My take is that Green ran out of ideas prior to leaving the business, and attempted to counter his depression with acid. Once the wise ones administered electro-shock, it was really the end of Green as a composer.

Book Description
How does an actor create a subtle, believable performance without rehearsal and preparation time, with little or no direction and be consistent while matching physical, subtextual and emotional choices through twenty takes and five different camera angles? As an actor and teacher for twenty five years, Thomas Babson has been doing and teaching others how to do just that in his own LA Film Actor's lab and with the Screen Actors Guild conservatory throughout the country. With countless stage productions as both actor and director, and over 200 film, television, and commercial projects (including recurring roles in Paper Chase, St. Elsewhere, Hill St. Blues, General Hospital, and an 11-year role on Cheers) to his credit, author Tom Babson creates a specific, efficient way of making the transition from stage to screen.
Customer Reviews:
Very Informative!!.......2002-02-02
I got this book yesterday and couldn't put it down until I was finished! Babson, might not be superstar with Academy Award winning performances under his belt but, he is really helpful in describing the process of film work. I have read so many books that come off with a cold, textbook quality and found his personable writing very refreshing. Babson gives you the hard facts peppered with reasons you should still remain confident in your craft. If you are trying to break into film or television this book is definitely worth your time.
It seems Tom Babson has gone out on limb with this one........1999-08-24
It was extremely difficult to read through the chapters of this book. Tom Babson's view on the subject is blocked by his lack of experience in the field. His acting seemed wooden in the episode on Cheers where he portrayed a lawyer and he seems to have branched out beyond his abilities in this book too.
A real insight into method acting........1998-10-14
I had the pleasure of taking a class in which Tom Babson taught us the various choices and techniques actors make when performing for the big screen. Though I am studying film and directing, the insight Babson gives is a helpful tool to communicating with actors and the secrets behind method acting. Too many times directors do not know how to communicate their vision to the actors. This book goes through step by step of the actor's choices that bring forth their character. It is tough to practice, and after reading and experiencing the material in this book, I now have a larger respect for actors and their "work". Babson was an actor on Cheers, various other TV movies and films, and has been instructed by the likes of Lee Strasburg.

Sympathetic humanitarian actress's story.......2006-10-25
This is the second autobiographical book by Ullmann. It opens with an account of her work in the Broadway Musical 'Mama', and continues to document both her acting career and her private life. It also tells much about her humanitarian efforts and travels in which she reveals a great deal of sympathy for and extends help to the poor and non- privileged in a wide variety of places. She also tells of her relationship to her young daughter, and there are accounts of her love- affairs one central one being with a man called Abel. She reveals herself to be a very caring kind of public personality, one who uses her fame for doing good for others.
I found the book a bit of a choppy read without much narrative drive. Nonetheless it is difficult not to be impressed by her strong caring personality and her dedication to helping others.
Once the curtain falls.......2004-03-30
The second autobiography by Liv Ullmann may be even better than the first, "Changing." This one, "Choices," is a more deeply personal memoir and tugs a lot more at the heartstrings, with tales of her roles as mother and lover, and her work for the poor.
Ullmann describes in quiet detail her work for UNICEF, travelling to places like Haiti and Manila. She also describes her relationship with her teenage daughter Linn, who blossoms from a sullen kid to a young woman; and an affair with a man she calls Abel, who moves to be with her, but whose love for her isn't enough. She describes working in the theatre. And finally, the then-forty-year-old Ullmann reflects on life, on time gone by, and the people she cares about.
Ullmann is older and wiser in "Choices." Hollywood was a thing of the past, although she was still acting at the time this was written. This isn't so much an actor's biography as the biography of a kind, charitable woman whose heart seems to bleed for every starved child and crippled old person she meets around the world. The only detailed writing in the whole book (aside from nature descriptions) is how she describes the lost, forgotten people who can't get medical care, food or water.
"Choices" is also endowed with the sort of in-the-moment anecdotes, that makes you feel like Ullmann is handing out snapshots of her life -- her breakups, her safari with her young daughter, her work on an Ibsen play, and even how a rusty old wok hinted at a future breakup. She takes some looks backward in time as well, at her mother and grandmother, and at her daughter's time with her father.
"But within this framework I have choices, and I am described by the way I make or neglect them." So says Ullmann, with the certainty of a woman who has made her "Choices."

Excellent informative anecdotal source for casting errors........1998-08-24
Easy to read, this informative book provides many anecdotes about Hollywood's bizarre casting decisions. Enjoyable to the cinema buff as well as grandma and grandpa; a great gift for anyone who loves the movies. Many of the tales involve classic movies, with which most are familiar. A real conversation provoker.

Take Care Of Yourself.......2003-01-07
One of the most important things you can do for yourself as an actor is take care of yourself emotionally. This book has some good stories and some interesting tid bits, but it is lacking in real how to's. I recently bought a book called Twelve Step Plan To Becoming an Actor in LA and found it not only fun to read but extremely helpful. The author is also a therapist so she really arms you, to go to battle, with daily and monthly excercises to keep you grounded even when the going gets tuff. Do yourself a favor and carry this book with yo ,no matter what city you live in.

honest, insightful guide to the acting profession.......2000-04-16
Judy Garland could have used Katherine Mayfield's book. She,like so many unique, talented and sensitive actors allowed the business of acting to define them, with tragic consequences. Smart Actors, Foolish Choices is not an artificial feel-good book;it is an honest book about the necessity of knowing and accepting yourself so that you can deal with the business of acting in which actors are product. The interviews with actors are excellent in bringing, in 12 unique personal stories, this reality to light. As one interviewee observed, Who you are as a person, how good you are as an artist, and how well you do in the business seem to be completely unrelated." (Johnny Kline) Katherine Mayfield's extensive experience with acting herself makes this a credible and insightful guide for actors. I would also recommend this book to non-actors in its ability to make you appreciate the human being behind each actor and the courage it takes to choose acting as a profession. The paricularly mean-spirited review she recieved from the actor in California discloses the depth at which an honest critique of the business is offensive to those needing a feel good fix. I highly recommend this book for its unflinching look at the realities of choosing acting as a career.
Disappointing; browse before buying.......2000-01-25
The title of this book caught my eye at the bookstore, and after leafing through it for a few minutes I bought it, thinking it would help prevent me making more of the "foolish choices" as an actor I had in the past. Upon reading it, the author gives a few anecdotes of the masochistic nature of being an actor (such as standing out in the cold all night in period dress to audition as an extra for a movie.) However, I found very little solid advice as to what mistakes to watch out for and more importantly, what to do to avoid being a foolish actor. Instead the author makes general comments of enjoying what you're doing, not to be masochistic, which is basic advice actors should learn by themselves after taking a few hard knocks. I read the book from cover to cover, and can't remember a single piece of advice that was specific to help me avoid the pitfalls of acting. The chapters ramble aimlessly and appear to have almost no organization.
The title is great, but the interior is disappointing. I am at a loss as to why it got such a high rating from the other reviewers. My advice is to search for this at the bookstore, sit down with a good cup of coffee and really look through it. If you buy it sight unread, you deserve the title of "foolish actor."
An essential read for anyone in the performing arts!.......1998-11-02
The most useful and informative book ever put to press! Anyone working in the "business" should make this their personal bible. Ms. Mayfield's insights speak directly to the struggling actor with a clarity only made possible by her intense personal experiences within the acting field. Don't miss this one!

Book Description
This book is the first thorough analysis of the making of the Treaty of Nice. It has chapters on each of the 15 Member States, analysing their preferences and strategies during the negotiations within the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) in 2000. There are also analyses of the roles of other actors, especially the Commission, the European Parliament and the Council Secretariat. The chapter on France takes a particular interest in the controversial role of the Presidency during the last part of the negotiations. The main issues on the Nice agenda: re-weighting of votes in the Council, the size and composition of the Commission, the extended use of qualified majority voting (QMV) and the changes in the flexibility provisions (or `enhanced cooperation') are all analysed in depth. The two parallel processes, developing the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) and negotiating the Charter of Fundamental Rights are also analysed. Finally the book discusses the causes of the specific institutional choices made in Nice and briefly looks at the post-Nice agenda, including the Constitutional Treaty.
At a time where the Constitutional Treaty has been put on hold it becomes even more important to understand the current treaty in force, the Treaty of Nice. Policy makers in the Member States and the Community institutions should all be interested in reading this book. For scholars and students of European integration the book is essential reading.

Customer Reviews:
Hard to follow .......2006-04-02
I learned ASP and Mysql with great ease and quick progress with 'the visual blueprint' books, the delivery were clear and concise.
But things have changed in this new series. The writing style is difficult to understand: instead of explaining the topic first, the writer jumps right into 'you can do this and that'. I have to read each chapter several times in order to grasp what he means. The screen shots are now arranged on top of one another. Which is by itself ok if the text are not reduced even smaller making it more difficult to read.
I am quite disappointed by this 'new' approach. I hope the publisher has not changed the 'your visual blueprint series' into
just a reference book instead of being a teaching book which it was so good at.
Excellent Reference Book.......2006-03-13
I love the layout of the book. It is very practical in the way it is layed out. Very few books actually have code and screen shots let alone a screen shot for every code example. This book will not teach you PHP, but if you have a general or intermediate understanding of the language, this book is an awesome reference.
Stop looking. This is what you need........2006-02-14
So satisfied with their first book - "PHP", I had to see if the second could be as informative and it was. The method of explaination in these books should be the model for all computer books. Nothing is over or under explained. While this book does not cover all that PHP has to offer, it does what it intended - making PHP easy for beginners to learn visually.
Friendly and Practical Reference.......2005-06-07
Programming books tend to fall into two categories, learn by example and reference books. If you are new to programming, it's generally easier to start learning by example suspending your knowledge of everything a language can do in favor of examining a few simple scripts to learn the basics. Once you have written a number of small scripts, a good reference book can guide you in writing more complex and functional applications.
On the spectrum of how-to vs. reference, "PHP 5: Your visual blueprint for creating open source, server-side content" falls on the near-side of reference yet is organized in a practical solution based fashion. One of about six PHP books on my bookshelf (and perhaps only second to the php.net website), I find myself referring to this book more than any other reference. It is an excellent reference for things like recalling the syntax of a loop structure to the application of a loop in processing multiple form elements.
Beyond being a solution-based reference, two things I really like about this book is the consistent two-page layout for each concept - a short description followed by code - and code shown in an actual editor window. (I'm not sure what it is about seeing screenshots of code but it seems to sink in better than code formatted in plain text on a page. Hence the Visual approach.)
If you are new to web programming and are looking to buy your first PHP book then you may be better served with a learning through sample projects approach like "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" by Kevin Yank. In reviewing this book, expert programmers might scoff and say RTFM. For the rest of us somewhere along the PHP and programming learning curve, I believe this book serves as a friendly and practical reference.
