Book Description

With a unique blend of insight, balance, and wit, two of our most renowned America watchers brilliantly anatomize the conservative movement and explain how it has stamped its program so deeply into American life.

The Right Nation is not "for" liberals, and it's not "for" conservatives. It's for any of us who want to understand one of the most important forces shaping American life. How did America's government become so much more conservative in just a generation? Compared to Europe-or to America under Richard Nixon-even President Howard Dean would preside over a distinctly more conservative nation in many crucial respects: welfare is gone; the death penalty is deeply rooted; abortion is under siege; regulations are being rolled back; the pillars of New Deal liberalism are turning to sand. Conservative positions have not prevailed everywhere, of course, but this book shows us why they've been so successfully advanced over such a broad front: because the battle has been waged by well-organized, shrewd, and committed troops who to some extent have been lucky in their enemies.

John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, like modern-day Tocquevilles, have the perspective to see this vast subject in the round, unbeholden to forces on either side. They steer The Economist's coverage of the United States and have unrivaled access to resources and-because of the magazine's renown for iconoclasm and analytical rigor-have had open-door access wherever the book's research has led them. And it has led them everywhere: To reckon with the American right, you have to get out there where its centers are and understand the power flow among the brain trusts, the mouthpieces, the organizers, and the foot soldiers. The authors write with wit and skewer whole herds of sacred cows, but they also bring empathy to bear on a subject that sees all too little of it. You won't recognize this America from the far-left's or the far-right's caricatures. Divided into three parts-history, anatomy, and prophecy-The Right Nation comes neither to bury the American conservative movement nor to praise it blindly but to understand it, in all its dimensions, as the most powerful and effective political movement of our age.

1 out of 5 stars not worth reading, much less buying.......2007-08-28

I was very disappointed in this book. I wouldn't have bought it if I had known that it was by two writers from the Economist. Sadly, they seem to share the typical Economist slants, and have no idea about what Conservatism is all about in America. They probably spend all their time in Washington DC and New York and think they have experienced America. I consider the book to be one long editorial, long on uninformed opinion and short on facts. The one thing this book won't do is lead readers to any understanding of the Right Nation.

4 out of 5 stars An informative introduction to American conservatism, but less than stellar comparative work.......2007-03-18

On the whole I found this book to be a stimulating and refreshing contrast to the other books I have read on this subject that take the form of screeds either in opposition or defense (treating this phenomenon as either an aberration/perversion or as a God-given and righteous march toward Paradise).

The First three parts of the book which details the ideas and development of the Conservative Movement are well worth the price of the book, it describes with an admirable level-headedness and dispassion (as well as a healthy dose of humorous anecdotes) the strenghts and weaknesses of the movement's ideas and the internal conflicts that might threaten its cohesion in the future. The Book tries (successfully in my opinion) not to be a work of advocacy for the ideas or people it presents but rather just give people a clearer idea of why the American political culture is so different from most of the rest of the industrialized world. I felt that in spite of the fact that I still think many of the ideas of the American Conservative Movement are bad ones I have a new appreciation and understanding of where they come from and their internal logic.

The last Part of the book is mainly a comparison of America with the rest, and didn't quite live up to the standard of the first three parts. Here the Neo-Liberal/Thatcherite editorial line of The Economist came shining through more than once with a few puzzlingly biased and misleading statements(social mobility, productivity etc.). This is not really a big problem, and doesn't take very much away from the book as a whole (I am sure it is not intentional), as a moderate knowledge of economics and some familiarity the magazine makes these things easy to spot. I just mean that if you want a comparative work on politics or economics in the US and Europe there are better alternatives.

5 out of 5 stars November 7, 2006 Election Adds More Evidence to Support Right Nation Thesis.......2006-11-10

The fascinating thing regarding the election held only two days ago was the alleged conservatism of a number of Democratic Party candidates. Some were anti-abortion, pro-gun, strongly against illegal immigration, and desire victory in Iraq. Are they conning the voters? We will find out soon enough. Nonetheless, they didn't run as liberals! An affirmative action measure was even resoundedly rejected in the Democrat dominated state of Michigan. Admittedly, the Republicans lost control of both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives---but newly elected Virginia senator and Viet Nam war hero James Webb will probably irritate his left-wing Democrat cohorts. British journalists John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge wrote Right Nation before the 2004 election. They clearly saw that a decent size majority of American voters substantially embrace conservative themes. At this point in time, there is little evidence that explicit and unambiguous liberalism will stage a comeback. Liberal politicians will often have to pretend to be conservative. This almost assuredly will continue to be the case as long as Islamic nihilism threatens the globe. Sadly, widespread economic illiteracy somewhat protects Democrat politicians. What happens if more voters are converted to the economic doctrines of Milton Friedman and Ludwig von Mises? Will the Democrats face oblivion? Right Nation may be slightly dated. It is, however, worthy of your time if you are trying to better understand the future political trends of the United States.

5 out of 5 stars Silent majority is no longer silent. .......2006-10-10

In the run up to the 2004 election publishers cranked out more political screeds than there were voters to read them. You know the books I'm talking about, both sides cranked them out - the ones that featured some indignant looking character on the cover with titles using words such as: shut up, stupid, dumb, fat, idiot, jerk, liar, etc. Yes it was an age when political discourse raged with a fevered pitch, and almost all Americans came out looking like dumb stupid idiot jerks by the time the whole thing was said and done. Somewhere amid all this mindless wrangling came a book that actually set out to understand the American electorate at the beginning of the 21st century in a dispassionate objective and thoughtful way. Written as more of a work of political anthropology it reads more like a book by De Toqueville than Al Franken or Ann Coulter.

The question the authors set out to answer is, what is the cause of America's decided tilt to the right over the last thirty years. The answers suggested are many, and would behoove any thoughtful reader interested in politics or American culture to consider. For those on the right this book will show that the world of conservative thought did not begin with talk radio, that there existed, and exists today a very directed and active core of conservative intellectuals that in many ways serve as the ballast of what is now the conservative movement. People on the left will benefit to learn that the people whom they disagree are not all just a bunch of illiterate Bible thumpers - and why the those that are illiterate bible thumpers are so decidedly conservative.

Somehow authors John Micklethwait and Adrian Wooldridge, a couple of Brits, have been able to more clearly understand the American political landscape than even we can. This is one book that will probably be read many years from now and will serve as a work to help future generations understand the political time in which we are living through now. Great book.

5 out of 5 stars academic, funny, balanced.......2006-08-13

it isn't al franken, michael moore, anne coulter or michelle malkin.

It's an objective history, with analysis and some predictions.

I'm a left-wing, liberal, european guy with a decent knowledge of US politcs and i found this book very useful in taking that to the next level.

It is definately from the "Economist magazine" stable, which is good - their pieces are well argued and very easy if your reading age is over 16.

A lot of poeple have found that coming to this book with their preconceptions isn't a bad thing - it is well researched enough and well argued enough to stimulate debate in your mind without lecturing or talking down.

They don't assert one thing or another as correct, but present a timeline and show how fragile the Conservative coalition is in reality(christians, economics, guns, "values" etc). But argues that even if the coalition fractures the strands of conservatism will remain (good or bad) for a long long time to come.

                  Book Description

As a result of the ongoing growth in the tourism industry, many destinations around the world are undergoing transformations. New destinations are being 'discovered' in regions previously ignored, as people search for regions that are yet unspoiled by the same ravages of mass tourism. At the same time, traditional destinations are experiencing rapid environmental, socio-cultural and economic modifications. These changes have the most effect on the host community -- the location where tourists spend their time and money, and influence development or degradation of the local environment. This book describes both the positive and negative effects of tourism on the host community.

WE ARE FOREIGNERS - I AM AFRAID - NEVERTHELESS WE FOUND IT TO BE EASILY UNDERSTANDABLE. WE HAVE THREE KIDS; FOR US THE PARENTS IT IS AN AMUSING ONE, HOWEVER FOR OUR ELDER KINDS (15 AND 13 YEARS OF AGE) IT IS MODERN INCENTIVE FOR LOOKING INTO THAT ISSUE AND FOR OUR LITTLE BOY THREE YEARS OF AGE IT IS A NICE PAINTING BOOK WITH QUITE SOME EDUCATIVE CHARACTER.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and funny book for all ages!.......1999-12-23

The book starts out in Genesis explaining the creation of the first and most important species on earth, Dogs. Each page in the book represents an important biblical event yet the lyrical text of Mr. Tamiran kept me laughing hard helping me remember the details of each cleverly told story. The book was masterfully crafted to provide rich humor, as well as an educational content, which has inspired me to read more stories about the bible and of course, dogs. No other book presents such an honest, yet unique perspective on the history of dogs and of people. After reading the whole book I just had to read it again and again! That is why I give this book my highest recomendations.

                        Book Description

For years, author Sheldon Norberg dealt drugs in the pot hills of Northern California. A scholarship-winning student, he dropped out of UCLA in favor of the overpowering lure of the Grateful Dead and counterculture living. Soon Norberg was making deals and doing drugs all the way from Humboldt to Berkeley. Confessions of a Dope Dealer provides an eye-opening, no-holds-barred account of Sheldon's life, but it also provides much more. It's a story of how one man's quest for transcendence blinded him to what he really needed: simple human acceptance. As Sheldon grows, he comes to see himself and his drug-addled life in new ways; this in turn allows him to analyze the cultural myths and values that surround drugs in America, producing a provocative memoir with a take on drugs like none other.

Kids will do these things. I did some, but as my dad said, "You had at least half the sense god gave celery." so I stopped when it got stupid and bizarre. Just kicked it. That whole Deadhead scene, all the concert thing - wasn't real. Bunch of people going nowhere, amusing themselves to death too literally. Oh, I liked the music, some of it.

Thing is, that 15-21 are crucial years for forming character, patterns of action, belief systems and personality for most. Adolescence is hard enough. Taking massive amounts of hallucinogenic drugs during that time is going to have serious effects.

Psychedelics can be useful. It's true what Norberg says about them at the end. But they can really weird people into orbit too. That includes some of those who researched them. Check out John Lilly, Mr. "Center of the Cyclone" did he turn into a blastoff boy or what? I've met and known well some of those Grof worked with or taught at some point. They vary a lot.

Anyway - I know that kids will always be kids and do stupid things. It's their nature. This book is pretty accurate about what to expect.

Me? Strangest thing for me was to love Mozart when I listened to it on LSD. Just wonderful.

Really great book, which made me laugh, cringe and think. It has been many years since my year of living dangerously at 17. I was less into mellowing agents than he, never liked pot or hash which dulled my mind too much. But I loved LSD, peyote and psylocibin. Yes, I did. Had some wonderful experiences from dying and becoming one with the light being-ness to seriously spicing up dinner and Christmas with my family. Quite a thing to see my heavy-duty dad get up from the table, hop and scream for joy at the ceiling from a pure contact high. I never dared to suggest we do it together, but we probably could have.

I also had some stellar bad times that seared my soul, never to return to what I was before. I too wonder what I might have been. But I don't regret. No, I don't.

Altogether it left me aching for the perfection of the wonder at the peak. The myth of Tantalus speaks fairly well for me. My life since has always been colored by the knowing that I can never slake that thirst, nor can I ever feel I may not drown someday should I try to drink of that spring or that I might not drown if I do not. As Maharaj Ji (Ram Dass' guru) said, LSD can take you to the room with god for a short time, but then you must leave.

Reading his book, it is hard to imagine someone intentionally returning to the level of paranoia which he did, and which it seems so many others did also. My lord what dedication! That's one thing that got me. After my first 6 months, things got tres` weird and I didn't like that anxious feeling at all. I kept at it through habit, and because it can be so goddam FUN and profound, then just stopped when I left home on my motorcycle and never did it again.

Psychedelics often massively inflate ones sense of self importance in a peculiar way, which Sheldon is honest enough to speak of in his book. Few former heads do. Most simply animate their inflation instead, making those around them subtly or not so subtly uneasy with them, particularly when they combine it with addle-pated notions. I have known, since my teens, quite a few who blew out on that course. I won't bore you with those I have known who didn't make it so well, some dead, some flipped, but they are there. I will say though, that far more people went down from unsafe sex, or stupid violence untouched by drugs, or from alcohol than from LSD or pot.

I still meet people, 28 years later who want to trip with me. People still know, after all these years. They can sense it if they get close to me. I consider it once in a great while.

Most of those I deal with now never have used such things and never will. They are, many of them, stellar people whom I respect greatly. But it is hard to never speak about such things, and I cannot do so with them usually.

Good book, and an unusual one in this time. So, thanks to Mr. Norberg for writing it. A surprise, really worth reading.

Confessions is a worthwhile read for anyone interested themes of spiritual awareness, social acceptance, dysfunctional families, and the process of becoming a self-supporting adult. In 352 entertaining yet sometimes repetitive pages, Norberg describes in detail his journey from a gifted yet angry young man to a full-time drug dealer to a substance-free meditation practitioner. He loosely ties the phases of his life, beginning with early childhood, to seven principles of Chinese philosophy and medicine (wood, fire, earth, metal, water, and yin and yang). The autobiography then concludes with two short chapters written from the perspective of someone who has tested the limits of society and themselves and wishes to share their wisdom

Confessions of a Dope Dealer is as much of a cautionary tale as it is a drug user's manual. The moral of this tale is that drugs are a seductive yet short-lived and harmful path to self-awareness. A great summer read for anyone with an open or curious mind.

This isn't normally the type of book that I choose to read, but after seeing the author's one-man theatrical performance of this autobiographical piece I decided to check it out. The book tells the story of a young man coming of age in the drug-culture of the late 70's and early 80's. The story is fun, engaging, and at times ultimately disturbing. At the end of the book the author reflects on his experiences, choices, and [mess] ups, and how they affected his life. It is not until the end that you get the impression that this book is meant to be a jumping-off point for discussion of our current drug-policy, and how it affects society as a whole. The author makes some keen observations, and I appreciate his approach to this discussion by bringing the subject matter into literary and theatrical formats. The one-man show is followed by a brief question and answer period which is a great way to spark a dialogue on this subject matter. Although some might perceive this book as a glorification of drug-dealing, it is ultimately an honest look at one man's experiences, one which left me with no illusions about the realities of this illicit profession.

I really enjoyed reading Confessions of a Dope Dealer. I picked it up and finished it in only two days. I had been looking for a good memoir about growing up as a drug dealer, and with a title like this, how could I go wrong? What I found was a curiously honest book about a young man growing up in the aftermath of the sixties, under the shadow of Raygunomics. A wonderfull read for anyone interested in dope, dealing, the Dead, or the eighties.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Great Instructional Book.......2003-12-23

This book was used at a university course (CIS 110) that I require for my business degree, and it was very helpful. All of the instructions are accompanied by illustrations (which is great when you're wondering, "Where is that button that they're talking about?"), speeding up the learning process.

The projects at the end of each section were very constructive, and the data disk helps out a lot on these. I learned a lot about Word, Access, and Excel, and although we didn't have the chance to go into Powerpoint, the book is self-explanatory enough that I can go through it on my own. This was also helpful when I missed a class, because I could then just go through the required section, which actually was more thorough than the in-class lecture (sometimes, the instructor missed a couple of examples from the chapter).

I love using Excel and Access now (they scared me before), and also Word, which I always used, but learned a lot about. I am interested in buying the Post Advanced Concepts book to become an expert, especially in Excel since I am heading towards a major in accounting, which requires a lot of spreadsheet work.
