Book Description
Parents were here first! How did the kids suddenly take control? Sure the world has changed from the days when children were supposed to be seen and not heard but things have gotten a little out of hand. What about some quality time for the grownups? Author Christie Mellor's hilarious, personal, refreshing, and actually quite useful advice delightfully rights the balance between parent and child. In dozens of short, wickedly funny chapters, she skewers today's parental absurdities and reminds us how to make child-rearing a kick. With recipes, helpful hints, and illustrations, this high-spirited book is the only book parents will really need and enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected..........2007-09-28
This is not a funny commentary on raising children as I expected. While I agree with many of the author's basic principles, it was really more of a rant than anything else. I didn't learn anything from the book that I didn't already know (yes, I let my children rule my life more than she thinks I should, but not nearly as much as shown in this book and certainly a lot less than many people around me). I expected a much funnier look at how parents give their lives to their kids.
The author is filled with contempt for all small creatures.......2007-09-19
I was looking forward to this book because I enjoy reading the humorous accounts of parenthood, and I have a pretty healthy sense of humor. This author, however, is mean-spirited in her writing and it seems as if her view of children is merely to raise silent slaves who will fetch your slippers. There is so much contempt in her writing style and she never breaks from her sarcastic, cold tone in order to show any warm humor. You can be funny and still maintain warmth and affection for the subject. This author apparently dislikes her children and all children she has encountered.
As if her contempt for children isn't enough, she puts the cherry on the sundae by displaying her contempt for cats and dogs. Her venom is particularly strong toward cats. I came away from the book feeling as if she hates any creature under five feet tall.
I feel sorry for her family, friends, neighbors, or anyone else who must endure this woman's selfish attitude toward life.
Don't waste the money on this book. I'm astounded that it even got published. The author mentions her love of alcohol so much that I'm beginning to think the only way to enjoy the book is to be drunk while reading it.
Dreadful!
Refreshing!.......2007-08-03
Like a couple of the reviewers in here, I wish I had thought of writing this book! But I don't drink martinis, but do pina colodas count? I finished this book in one hour ~~ a miracle in itself because I normally don't get an hour to read. But since this is the August book club choice and I am a moderator of it ~~ I really needed to read it. And it definitely made my night ~~ with chapters like: Screaming: Is It Necessary? Child Labor: Not Just for the Third World (something I've been trying to tell my kids for three years now ... and this mommy's going to go on strike soon if they don't learn that picking up their toys is very important to a family's health!). There's a chapter on traveling with your kids, and one of my favorites is: Karate, Little League and Ballet: Your Child's Eighty-Hour Week. I just love it all!
This is a tongue-in-cheek book about parenting. It is not meant to be taken so seriously that you think the author doesn't like kids. No, the point of this book is to emphasize that moms (and dads) have the right to enjoy "adult" things like having a martini before dinner, have an uninterrupted conversation with other adults, and to tell the kids to go find something to do while mommy takes a nap, read a book or whatever else that mommy wants to do. Yes, kids are a big and important part of our lives, but they do not need to dominate the entire day. It's about moms and dads taking back part of their lives ~~ and it's refreshing to read this book!
So if you will excuse me ~~ it's time for me to drink a cup of hot tea and read while the kids are playing.
P.S. I would definitely recommend this book for all of your mom friends ~~ young and old. The truths carries over to all generations, well, except the kids, of course.

Perfect gift for a friend with kids--especially if you don't have any.......2007-07-17
Based on the recommendation of a friend, I bought this as a gift for friends of mine who have a 4-year old. They loved it. I read it before I sent it to them, and laughed out loud all the way through. The Three-Martini Playdate will help your friends take parenthood a little less seriously--in a good way.
Terrible!.......2007-06-13
I enjoy this genre of humorous, light parenting book but this was just not funny. The author is very opinionated with her approach to parenting but does not offer any usable advice to help achieve her parental goals. Her blanket suggestions are ridiculous and I know of no family that could follow them. And if she is just trying to be funny, I guess I just don't get her sense of humor.
Book Description
Two of the world's great Marxist historians present a classic social history of the Great English Agricultural Uprising of 1830. For generation upon generation, the English farm laborer lived in poverty and degradation. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, however, new forces came into play--and when capitalism swept from the cities into the countryside, tensions reached the breaking point. From 1830 on, a series of revolts, known as the "Swing," shook England to its core. Here is the background of that upheaval, from its rise to its fall, and the people who tried to change their world. A masterpiece of British history.

Love helps overcome all.......2007-09-11
Thirty-something black jazz singer Johnnie Ray Rousseau has recently lost his lover of ten years in a fatal car accident; he is still in mourning and unable to see the way forward. He is now on is way to visit his dying father Lance. A father who he fells never loved him and finally rejected him when he discovered Johnnie was gay. Understandably it is not without trepidation that he makes the trip at the bidding of his aunt who claims his father has asked to see him before he dies.
Yet it is to prove a trip of revelations. He learns facts about his father that very much alter his perception of Lance. He also meets his cousin the very likeable Nigel whom he has not seen since he used to bounce the five or six year old boy on his knee. Nigel, now nearly nineteen and a handsome lean muscled young man, is especially pleased to see Johnnie; and he has some revelations of his own to share. There is clearly a mutual attraction and it is not long before the younger has worn down the older cousin's understandable reticence.
A fairly short story, it is however very warm, tender, moving and positive, especially as Nigel in a his practical way helps his older cousin come to terms with his recent losses Duplechan's writing is a delight, he has a sure way with words, with appropriate touches of humour and skilful handling of the very intimate scenes; a most enjoyable read.
Read the trilogy and kept hope alive............2005-01-18
But I am baffled at with self hatred of Larry Deplechan as an African American writer. I would much rather read his auto biography to understand his twisted views on the world. He is a great writer and Captain Swing is no dount a well written piece, but from Johnny Rae's obsession with white men, to his low view of just about every black person is all 3 books, to his twisted sexual relationship with his blood cousin and a justification that could only come from the author's own true personal feelings, I don't know whether to applaud him for being so bold or reccommend him getting his head checked.
Charming, touching and moving..........2000-03-28
This is the third of LD's books to focus on black gay chanteur Johnny Ray Rousseau, and finds him returning to his Deep Southern roots following the death of his 'husband.' It is as always with this writer a witty, fluid, easy read, sexy and charming and also at certain moments intensely moving. 'Heartwarming' in the best, most genuine sense of the word. Wonderful.

Successful Small-Scale Farming: An Organic Approach (Down-To-Earth Book)

Customer Reviews:
Farmer, Gardner, Country Gentleman. Good humor for all........2006-09-02
I'm not ready to become a farmer, but I did buy some acres and move to the country. Lowell Christensen shares the troubles, wisdom, and humor of farming with us city folk who haven't figured out that a fence won't keep a bull away from the cows. He covers every part of farming from animals to driving on country roads to shoveling manure. The prose are light and humorous. There are a thousand ways to make mistakes on a farm, and at least half of them are humorously detailed in this short book. His recipe for home made soap produces eight pounds of soap, 18 doughnuts, and 3oz of pork skins. If you raise chickens there are thoughtful questions such as, "How many baskets should you put your eggs in?"
I'm not going to raise goats or cows, and I would need more detailed information than this general beginning book if I wanted to. But it's a fun and humorous little book on farming. It is also full of inside information from a man who grew up on a family farm. Its fun to read even if you aren't ever going to live on a farm.
Dave Barry meets James Herriot........1998-02-12
If you've lived on a far, lived near a farm, or just smelled a farm, read this book. As someone who's also routinely tried to herd sheep, had to clean (a.k.a dress) chickens or learned to hand-milk a cow I laughed until I cried. I only wish I could read the sheep section (in its entirety) to a church choir... They would then understand why it's a miracle that "Sheep may safely graze".
This does not deliver on it's title.......1998-02-09
This book is a humor book and does not deliver anything related to basic farming.

A succinct, thorough guide to film theory and technique.......2007-06-25
Routledge Key Guides are typically succinct, thorough, and extremely useful - and this is no exception. The articles cover a broad range of topics from simple editing techniques to sophisticated Lacanian theory. Hayward's tone is authoritative, but never pedantic. These entries are not excessively wordy and are thus useful to beginning film students, or even regular film buffs. That is not to say, however, that the book isn't useful to more advanced students. While most film students will probably own Bordwell's "Film Art", you may need to do a little digging before you find exactly what you need. This guide is very straightforward to use, so you never have to hunt around for, say, how the concept of "agency" relates to the cinema. This isn't really a replacement for a larger volume on film theory and technique, but it is a nice companion for easy access to lots of information.
The articles range from one paragraph for terms where a straightforward definition will suffice to 21 pages on psychoanalysis. Again, Hayward's goal is communication, not a dazzling display of erudition. Nothing against dense scholarly texts - this is just easily accessible by comparison.
The book is cross-indexed and each entry includes helpful tips for further reading. Add to that an extensive list of references, and three indices (films, names, and terms) and you've got a handy reference that you'll return to again and again. Whether you're trying to get a handle on the rapidly expanding world of film studies, or you're working on a paper and you need a quick reminder of what a "parallel reversal" is, this is worth picking up.
Solid.......2007-05-13
A good book which gives an overveiw of the various topics of cinema. If you want to know what one of the ideas are, read this book. Great for writing papers in the sense that it is concise and accurate.
However, if you want a real in depth understanding of the topics covered, you'll need to look farther. This is a great starting place for any of hundreds of topics covered in the ook!
A little slow delivery, but good product.......2007-02-24
The item was new like advertised, but took a couple weeks to reach me. It is a school book and put me behind in the class.
An encyclopedia-style A to Z guide of critical cinematic concepts.......2006-07-04
Now in its revised, updated, and expanded third edition Cinema Studies: The Key Concepts is an encyclopedia-style A to Z guide of critical cinematic concepts, from "action movies" and "art direction" to "Italian neo-realism", "lap- dissolve", "30-degree rule", "widescreen" and much more. Each accessibly-written entry summarizes the concept in an amount of text ranging from half a page to several pages, and a thorough bibliography, name index, and subject index encourage quick reference. Enthusiastically recommended for students of film, anyone seeking a career in the movie industry, and even seasoned professionals looking for an easy-to-use refresher reference.
Book Description
This new edition of Routledge's definitive Key Concepts in Cinema Studies has been extentively updated and expanded.
In addition to new entries, such as pornography and adaptation, all of the genre entries reflect the changes of the past few years, and numerous changes have been made in response to feedback from students of film. Featuring some 150 entries, Cinema Studies: The Key Concepts explores a wide range of genres, movements, theories and production terms with depth and clarity. This highly readable resource is both authoritative and accessible, making it an ideal guide for film students and a pleasurable reference for film lovers.
Download Description
In this second edition essential guide some 150 key genres, movements, theories and production terms are explained and analysed with depth and clarity.
Customer Reviews:
Scholarly, Well Researched, Dense with Theory.......2002-10-30
Susan Hayward has done a good job putting together a compendium of cinema concepts. Her work is very scholarly and well researched with a good deal of additional references (for further reading.)
Professor Hayward's bio says she is a Professor of French Studies. It shows in her book. If you feel like you haven't had your fill of post modernism, semiotics and structuralist/post structuralist theory, this book will get your diet straight.
This isn't the kind of book you'd just sit down and read from cover to cover. It's more of a reference. My complaint is that the book is a little dry and dense.
However, if you need a reference book on cinema concepts, this is a good choice.

Book Description
Key Concepts in Cinema is a comprehensive glossary of the main terms, techniques, and concepts in film theory and production, and the debates surrounding them. Full historical overviews of key film genres, descriptions of major movements of world cinema, explanations of theories used in the study of cinema, and complete definitions of key film production terms combine to make this the most thorough glossary of its kind.

Absolutely essential and the most informative, so far...........2000-06-08
This book seems to be the best cinema studies reference book, so far, on the market. It does cover most definitions from different film theories and cinema studies briefly, yet precisely. It does not have all of the film studies' essential vocabulary, but it has most of it. Numerous examples are also supplied with every definition or argument. I should say, though, that the format could have beed better [easier to access]. But, other than that, this book is the perfect guide to your film studies. NOTE: This book has nothing to do with language of filmmaking and its process [I thought I should mention that, just in case...]

Book Description
The World Wide Web has cut a wide path through our daily lives. As claims of "the Web changes everything" suffuse print media, television, movies, and even presidential campaign speeches, just how thoroughly do the users immersed in this new technology understand it? What, exactly, is the Web changing? And how might we participate in or even direct Web-related change?
Intended for readers new to studying the Internet, each chapter in
Unspun addresses a different aspect of the "web revolution"--hypertext, multimedia, authorship, community, governance, identity, gender, race, cyberspace, political economy, and ideology--as it shapes and is shaped by economic, political, social, and cultural forces. The contributors particularly focus on the language of the Web, exploring concepts that are still emerging and therefore unstable and in flux.
Unspun demonstrates how the tacit assumptions behind this rhetoric must be examined if we want to really know what we are saying when we talk about the Web.
Unspun will help readers more fully understand and become critically aware of the issues involved in living, as we do, in a wired society.
Contributors include: Jay Bolter, Sean Cubitt, Jodi Dean, Dawn Dietrich, Cynthia Fuchs, Matthew Kirschenbaum, Timothy Luke, Vincent Mosco, Lisa Nakamura, Russell Potter, Rob Shields, John Sloop, and Joseph Tabbi.
Book Description
Jython is an implementation of the Python programming language written in 100% pure Java, so it runs under any compliant Java Virtual Machine. The secret to Jython's popularity lies in the combination of Java's libraries and tools with Python's rapid development capabilities. With Jython, you can write Python programs that integrate seamlessly with any Java code. And like Python, Jython can be used interactively, so you can get immediate results as you are programming. Jython Essentials provides a solid introduction to the Python language, offering a brief but thorough tour of the Python concepts you'll need to understand to use Jython effectively. The book makes frequent comparisons between Python and Java, with special emphasis on the different object-oriented semantics of the two languages, so Java programmers can quickly get up to speed with Jython. Jython Essentials also covers the various ways in which Jython and Java can interact. For example, Jython code can create instances of pre-existing Java classes and call methods in those instances. You can write Jython classes that are direct subclasses of existing Java classes and use introspection to discern the capabilities of JavaBeans components. This book provides examples of using Jython with existing Java libraries, including the Swing GUI toolkit, the JDBC database API, the Servlet API, and various XML tools. And finally, the book shows how Jython can be used as a scripting language within a Java program. With Jython Essentials, you have everything you need to start creating applications that mix the best of Python's interactivity and Java's robust libraries.
Customer Reviews:
jython.......2006-02-21
This is a good overall guide to jython and I think it is as good as all the rest of the nutshell books are.
Good language coverage, but awkward........2003-12-10
This text has good coverage of the language features, but the presentation and organization is poor. If you're a Java developer looking to pick up jython quickly, I'd suggest "Jython for Java Programmers" instead.
Informative, but poorly presented.......2003-03-15
I found the book to be informative in learning JPython, but it seemed to have ignored the most practical use-cases for JPython, light scripting and unit testing, and kept suggesting JPython as an alternative for working in Java. In addition, I felt the book was poorly (or boringly) written and that the authors failed to draw on any significant amount of experience in writing the book.
I would have preferred a book that wrote of JPython as a scripting language for Java and that offered advice on how best to leverage JPython for this purpose. I recommend taking a hard look at the other titles before purchasing this one.
OK, I'm adding a paragraph to this review after owning the book for a few weeks. It IS a very helpful book and I'm raising my rating from 2 to 4 stars. Perhaps I was thrown off at first by the succinctness of the text, but I've come to find that it makes it a great reference book. I'm already a half-way experienced programmer and do not need the filler and the explanation of concepts that thicker books probably provide.
Also, there is a helpful section on unit testing which I'd missed (It wasn't placed very well in the book) and python is a flexible enough language that someone should be able to figure out different ways to unit test without the section.
Superb summary of CPython 2.2 features.......2002-06-10
For someone who's been working in Cpython 1.5 thru 2.1, the 1st 5 chapters are an excellent, succinct language refresher and intro to new features in 2.2: nested scopes, generators, etc.
This book does assume pretty solid grounding in python. If you don't have that, start with:
Chun: Core Python
Lutz: Learning Python
or Harms/McDonald: Quick Python
A fantastic guide!.......2002-04-09
This great reference is well organized and remarkably readable. I can't remember the last time I saw a guide this clearly writen. If you're working in Jython, you'll want to keep this book within arms reach. If you aren't working in Jython...well, why are you reading this review?
