4 out of 5 stars TCM for Geeks.......2007-09-12

Reading this book is like talking to a geek. If you enjoy conversations with geeks and learn a lot from them, this is the Chinese medicine book for you. If you tend to find such conversations confusing, dense, and boring, well, that's probably what you'll think of _The Web That Has No Weaver_ as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent TCM Text for those with Scientfic Background.......2007-07-09

I'm surprised by some of the highly critical reviews here. I think this book is a wonderfully informative, eye-opening tome of an introduction to traditional chinese medicine. *If* you have a strong western science backgroud. For laypeople, it is a poor choice.

But the information you need is there, organized logically, and from a very analytical western scientific standpoint. The discussion of tcm as an entirely different science is particularly interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Explaination.......2007-01-23

Oriental Medicine, is it all just phooey or is it ancient remedy for both past and modern ailments? Not scientifical backed, though proven, is not chemical, nor physical, but deeply spiritual, but hey this is a teen talking to you, currently rooting himself in Tai Chi and Accupressure. Chemicals and bonded elements/medication ... too much for you> The Web That Has No Weaver will immerse you in a world, easing the confusion. Want to know the aspects and components of spirit, Chi/Qui, Meridians,... read this guide and find out.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Ambitious Layman.......2007-01-12

Ted J. Kaptchuk's "The Web That Has No Weaver" is a fancinating and informative read that challanges the layman's understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine without getting bogged down by cultural discrpancies or technical jargon. Reading through the original text is fun and comprehensive; but for a deeper understanding of contemporary issues as they relate to the topic, the reader can look to the detailed footnotes and appendices.

Anyone who works for a big corporation has probably had to sit through a mandatory workshop on diversity. Every year businesses and governments lavish millions of dollars on consultants who promise to remove discrimination from the workplace. In this comprehensive profile, Lynch shows that while some of the concepts introduced by the diversity industry are worthwhile, far too often these so-called experts do more harm than good. And their influence can be downright pernicious when they find racism, sexism, and homophobia where none exists. This book belongs in the must-read category for human resource professionals.

    Book Description

The latest fad in American businesses and universities is "diversity training." Most are familiar with the format: employees or students sit in a circle with their co-workers or classmates and engage in a variety of strange exercises. They role play, talk about their feelings, confront their prejudices. It all seems rather harmless, if a bit silly.

Whose idea was all of this, anyway? Where did diversity training come from, and where is it going? Frederick Lynch spent five years researching the diversity business from the inside -- interviewing its principals, attending numerous sensitivity seminars, and studying institutions, such as the University of Michigan and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which have transformed themselves into virtual showcases of diversity.

However innocuous this movement appears from the outside, Lynch finds that it is much more than it seems. Corporations, government offices, and colleges spend tens of millions of dollars annually to hire outside diversity consultants, who promise to turn these institutions into utopian meccas; in the institution that has learned to "value diversity," all tension between men and women, blacks and whites, gays and straights will be purged. But when these grandiose promises inevitably fall flat, the diversity merchants are expert in finding scapegoats. Either management didn't spend enough money on programs, or the organization was not aggressive enough in pursuing "non-white male" applicants, or there was a "white male backlash" against the inclusion of minorities and women in the institution.

Indeed, the diversity industry cites no studies or other evidence to back up its dubious marketing claims. Some diversity consultants allege that pursuing diversity enhances a company's bottom line. Others take an even more cynical approach, declaring a bogus moral authority by portraying their business as the heir to the civil rights movement. Lynch persuasively shows how both of these postures work in concert to hoodwink thousands of American managers and CEOs into spending scarce resources on diversity patent medicines. This exhaustively researched, readable book effectively exposes the self-righteous, greedy, and ultimately ineffectual underside of the diversity business.

    5 out of 5 stars Aughhhh!.......1999-10-24

So cowardly selfish white males want Women and minorities to suffer poverty and oppression; so what else is new??? Why do white males think that they "deserve" priviledge, while everyone else must suffer?? Why, why? Oh well, *they're going to lose in the end* Hah!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent view inside the belly of the beast!.......1998-11-07

Frederick Lynch is brave. As a former zombie who mechanically followed the Politically Correct guidelines of the "PC Party" I found Lynch to be incredibly fair in his delivery. Lynch reports on the moderate, thoughtful, and restrained among diversity trainers as well as those who are quite good and those who are extremely naughty.

Naughty is a real understatement and I'm being nice to the Stalinists within the far left-wing PC Party, but as Lynch has written, many careers have been lost over just being honest.

Bravo Mr. Lynch; you've hit the target spot on. Visit more college campuses, especially the division of "Student Services", "Student Affairs", "Student Development", etc. and you'll find a whole host of very enthusiastic PC Party Police (paid by the state) who will not listen to anything outside PC Party dogma.

PS - come visit soon; we need reinforcements!

I have to admit im extremely impressed. Their aren't many Tinwhistle learning books out their that teach you everything you need to know, but so far this book has been truly remarkable. He goes through really in-depth lessons slowly so that their easy to follow, and as you progress you meet new challenges within the book.
In conclusion, if you want to learn how to play the tinwhistle GET THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the whistle guidebooks.......2007-06-04

OK, so I have only tried three. But this one fits my style. If you don't have a live instructor available, the best option, then this book can help you understand the real basics: how to hold the whistle, basic fingering options, breathing. Stuff other tutorials tend to assume you already know.

Of course, there is plenty here for more advanced students too. I do suggest you look elsewhere for a supplemental tune book and consider purchasing other tutorials, but this is an excellent place to start.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST musical Toolbox you can have!.......2007-03-29

To the previous reviewer: It's called a "Toolbox" for a reason.

Clearly this book was not intended to be a songbook. There are _plenty_ of songbooks, and they all have one shortcoming; they rarely give the player an adequate indication of "how" to execute the ornaments or address other often asked questions such as whether or not dynamics are possible. Even the better song/method books out there that come with recordings usually aren't organized well enough to follow the curriculum outlined in the book (i.e. they give you an example and then follow it with a song that poorly illustrates the concept put forth, OR the recorded song comes in one speed: blindly fast for you to appreciate by ear but frustrate the heck out of the beginning student).

As one who has been teaching music (and penny whistle specifically) for a while now, I can't tell you how many students I've had that express dismay and confusion over the "how to's" of the expressive part of whistle playing. Yes you can show them in a lesson but between lessons it's helpful to have a good, thorough book to guide you, help you advance quickly, and keep you motivated.

Music (on any instrument, including the voice) is a language. Despite the other reviewers negative attitude toward music theory, many people find it helpful because it explains the concepts and "rules" for that language, which gives you the ability to "intentionally" communicate your ideas AND understand them when you hear them played by someone else so that you can reproduce them yourself . As one who makes their living professionally playing and teaching music, I have found that people that say they don't "like/need" to know music theory have had the misfortune of having it taught in a non-relevant, dry way.

As to the author not providing audio recordings of the tunes cited, there are plenty of sources for one to find them. It is very expensive to gain the rights to use those songs in publications. If you think this book is expensive already, how'd like to pay the added cost that would be passed on to you were they (the songs cited) to be included.

I am thrilled to finally have found a book like this to supplement a grossly neglected area of whistle playing. I would highly recommend this book for teachers and especially self-taught players. Use it as a supplement to the method and songbooks you have that don't (or poorly) cover the aspects of whistle playing that make the difference between you sounding like an perpetual beginner and a more seasoned player.

Hats off to Mr Larsen for such a fine bit of work. If you really want to play with ease and SOUND great, this book is a must have in your collection!

2 out of 5 stars Where is the songs to play?.......2005-01-30

While this particular book has tons of information on ornamentation of whistle music, it doesn't include none of the full song. So, in a way, you became proficient in Irish music nuances but at the same time there are no song to test your mastery. Author spends more than 60 pages on music theory, Irish history, breathing, modes of octave and stuff like this, in short, all you don't really need to play whistle music. At the same time he refers you to his web site where you can download (for fee of course) some songs with MP3 files, so you can polish whatever you learned in this book on real songs. If author would include the above information in his book I would give his 5 stars. I just dislike when someone starts to teach me something I really don't need (like music theory) in a book that meant to teach you whistle music.

            Book Description

This is a no-holds-barred look at the most unenviable jobs of the last two thousand years. Tony Robinson sets out to investigate life in the underbelly of history. Whether it's swilling out the crotch of a knight's soiled armor after the battle of Agincourt, risking his neck in the rigging of HMS Victory, or as 'Groomer of the Stool' going to places where none of Henry VIII's six wives would venture - the author endures it all to get to the bottom (sometimes literally) of the story.

Covering the Roman invasion to the reign of Queen Victoria, Tony's challenge is to seek out the worst jobs of each era. The very names Scab Eater, Powder Monkey and Seeker of the Dead underline the fact that the past is a different and fairly disgusting country. The Gunpowder Plot drew the author to the role of the Saltpetre man who collected human waste for its nitrate content to turn into gunpowder.

In the same vein, there's a look at some of the worst jobs behind the building of the great medieval cathedrals. This book looks at the dire conditions on Nelson's Victory where the most common form of retirement was being sewn into your hammock with a couple of cannon balls and dropped over the side. Then there's the impact of the Industrial Revolution, a source of wealth and power for the few, but a cornucopia of lousy jobs for the many. Richly illustrated with artwork, photographs and diagrams, this book really gets into the grime of how life was for ordinary people and provides a vivid, alternative and fairly disgusting history.

5 out of 5 stars If You Think Your Job Sucks, Wait Til You Read This Book!.......2006-12-02

Many view history through rose-colored glasses, viewing England's history, for example, as hearty peasants, knights in shining armor, prgressive Victorians, etc. Behind all that lurks the truth as revealed by Tony Robinson's informative book - 'The Good Old Days Were Terrible!' To learn why, pick up a copy of this fascinating 2,000 year survey of Miserable British Employment.

Robinson's book looks at England's underbelly - all those terrible, soul- and body-crushing and often totally disgusting jobs Englishmen, women and, sadly, children performed over the centuries so that society might progress. Beginning with Roman times, the author takes the reader through a 'Tragical History Tour' of such god-awful occupations as cess-pool cleaner, puke collector, rat catcher, flex retter, hide tanner, corpse collector, spit boy, woad dyer, etc. This book is not for the faint of heart, trust me. Yet it's all true!

For anyone interested in British history, this book is a must read. By turn, it's an informative, amazing, appalling, sad and ultimately fascinating look at 'Ye Good Olde Days.' After reading it, you'll know the rest of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, to the point, clear and complete!.......2006-07-06

I bought the electronic version of this book because it looked good, it was cheap and I needed it to prepare some training for the people in my department. It turned to be a great reference with all the complete information needed to start using the software from scratch, and even with some advanced information. It shows everything you need to start using the software like a pro. I only found one backside. I like these types of books to have some practice files to follow up. In this way, I learn while using the software. This book does not have any accompaining files.

5 out of 5 stars User friendly with reading ease.......2002-11-13

Order this book for my team of extremely busy managers. They love it! Truely user friendly for non-technical people. Easy large print for those whom need it. Great practical examples, charts and graphs. Well written and topics are logically in order.

2 out of 5 stars If you've already read step by step, DON'T get this book!.......2001-02-19

Taking the advice from the other's who reviewed this book, I bought it. Although I'd just finished Step by Step for Project 2000, I was looking for more concepts and principles behind PM for executives. This book was nothing more than a refresher for me. Its poorly written and the average user picking up a MS Project book for the first time would be lost. Stick with step by step books....

5 out of 5 stars Takes the Monster Out of the Closet.......2000-10-30

I've always found project management and project management software to be intimidating. This book, however, makes it all very clear and much less ominous. Not only is the Microsoft Project 2000 software thoroughly discussed but essentials of project management as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone new to managing projects or to the person who has so far found project software the equivalent of the Monster hiding in the closet.

5 out of 5 stars An ideal "how to" reference for project managers........2000-03-03

Effective Executives: Guide To Project 2000 is enhanced for the reader with informative appendixes presenting real-world solutions for dealing with the practical problem of scheduling uncertainties using PERT; explaining how to customize Project 2000 so it better fits specific requirements, and more.
