A Joke.......2003-05-14

I used this book as a textbook for a graduate level class. The content on this book is a disappointment. When I asked my fellow classmate how he felt about the book, he said that it was a joke and I agree. Most of the content on this book are facile compilation of topics. I pity the grad student that has to use this book to make or break him or her. You can get much more knowledge about the subject of management information systems by subscribing to a magazine. There is a lapse in style when it comes to the layout of the book. The backround of the page where the case studies is written is distracting to the eye. The pictures of the book are really old. This book is certainly not for anyone that is teaching him or herself management information system. There is very little use for that purpose. If you have to use this book then dig into some bad writing.

Great Introduction to the World of MIS.......2002-09-15

O'Brien's "Management Information Systems" is a solid introduction to the world of MIS. It uses the world e-business as a model for the role of information systems in the modern world.

The great thing about this book is its currency. Each chapter abounds with numerous case study and spotlight features on how modern businesses in all industries use IS in their everyday functions. Among the business and industries profiled include: Walmart, Southwest Airlines, Dell, Pepsi, McDonald's, Oracle, GE, Hitachi, Merrill Lynch, eBay, Ford, etc. This case study method really brings the course concepts home and makes them relevant and accessible. O'Brien's writing style is very straight and to the point and is very accessible. He is able to relate the content and make it relevant to the modern world.

This book reviews advances in understanding of the past ca. two million years of Earth history - the Quaternary Period - in the United States. It begins with sections on ice and water - as glaciers, permafrost, oceans, rivers, lakes, and aquifers. Six chapters are devoted to the high-latitude Pleistocene ice sheets, to mountain glaciations of the western United States, and to permafrost studies. Other chapters discuss ice-age lakes, caves, sea-level fluctuations, and riverine landscapes.

With a chapter on landscape evolution models, the book turns to essays on geologic processes. Two chapters discuss soils and their responses to climate, and wind-blown sediments. Two more describe volcanoes and earthquakes, and the use of Quaternary geology to understand the hazards they pose.

The next part of the book is on plants and animals. Five chapters consider the Quaternary history of vegetation in the United States. Other chapters treat forcing functions and vegetation response at different spatial and temporal scales, the role of fire as a catalyst of vegetation change during rapid climate shifts, and the use of tree rings in inferring age and past hydroclimatic conditions. Three chapters address vertebrate paleontology and the extinctions of large mammals at the end of the last glaciation, beetle assemblages and the inferences they permit about past conditions, and the peopling of North America.
A final chapter addresses the numerical modeling of Quaternary climates, and the role paleoclimatic studies and climatic modeling has in predicting future response of the Earth's climate system to the changes we have wrought.

In the course of the development of electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions, the concept of (internal) gauge invariance grew up and established itself as an unavoidable dynamical principle in particle physics. It is less known that the principle of equivalence, and the basic dynamical properties of the gravitational interaction can also be expressed as a (spacetime) gauge symmetry. Gravitation and Gauge Symmetries sheds light on the connection between the intrinsic structure of gravity and the principle of gauge invariance, which may lead to a consistent unified field theory. The first part of the book gives a systematic account of the structure of gravity as a theory based on spacetime gauge symmetries. Some basic properties of space, time, and gravity are reviewed in the first, introductory chapter. The next chapter deals with elements of global Poincaré and conformal symmetries, which are necessary for the exposition of their localizations; the structure of the corresponding gauge theories of gravity is explored in chapters 3 and 4. Then, in chapters 5 and 6, we present the basic features of the constrained Hamiltonian of Poincaré gauge theory, discuss the relation between gauge symmetries and conservation laws, and introduce the concept of gravitational energy and other conserved quantities. The second part of the book explores the most promising attempts to build a unified field theory containing gravity, on the basis of the gauge principle. The author presents the possibility to constrict the theory of gravity as a nonlinear field theory in flat spacetime. The final chapters yield an exposition of the ideas of supersymmetry and supergravity, Kaluza-Klein theory, and string theory. Gravitation and Gauge Symmetries will be of interest to postgraduate students and researchers in gravitation, high energy physics and mathematical physics.

What a great read. We start out with a husband and wife, and they are raising Imogene's sister's daughter Lou and another adopted daughter, Jeanette. Jeanette is a 16 year old girl who can't find her place in this world and is sullen most of the time. Lou is a pleasant, easy going girl. When Imo's husband, Silas dies, Imo and the girls' worlds are torn apart.

Imo takes the advice of other ladies, gets a makeover and goes to the grocery store to try and pick up a man. Hilarious times! She thinks she finds love in a few places, but you will have to read the book.

When Imo thinks things can't get any worse, Jeanette has a surprise for her that will send her reeling! Will they all make it through life's troubles and times? Read and find out! I don't want to miss out on these wonderful books! You won't either!

In this first novel of three by Julie Cannon, the story begins with Imogene Lavender Rose who is raising 2 of her own daughters, Loutishie of whom was her sister's child, and also Jeanette. Loutishie is the sweet girl, and Jeannette on the other hand is belligerent. Imogene is around 64 herself, and her dearest husband and soulmate Silas, is dying from cancer. Imogene and the girls are devastated by this, and after his death, Imogene simply cannot get over it, almost grieving too death. Her solace though, has always been her garden, and over a long period of time, this is what gives her comfort more than anything. And then her friend Wanda, at the Kuntry Kurl, tries to jack up her spirits even more by suggesting a whole new makeover, and going out to find another man.

As Imogene very reluctantly tries Wanda's and Martha's suggestion of dating, it is nothing but disasters for the most part. When she meets Henry, a widower for the first time, it seems all he can do is speak of his dead wife, then she goes on to meet other men, the last one Mr. Mabry, of whom she almost marries when he dies of a sudden heart attack.

Through all this, Jeanette, the older daughter is out getting herself into trouble with men. She is a tough character, rebels against Imo, smokes and everything else. But then one day as she dates an older married man, getting pregnant with his child, this changes, and her life in spite of her mother's shame, changes for the better.

The book is very hard to put down, and the next book, Mater' Biscuit, is another great sequel as to what happens in the lives of these three next.

A cute story of finding healing through gardening.......2005-09-20

The storyline was excellent; finding healing from intense pain and grief through hardwork in the garden and from reaping your own freshly grown produce as the fruit of your labor and love. I thought the characterizations were well-developed and the descriptive writing was beautifully detailed. The style of writing was a bit hard to follow (ex: awkwardly structured sentences) and the story was poorly edited. Still, this was definitely a worthwhile reading, and I related to Imo's feelings of despair in a very personal way so the story resonated deeply with me. The abrupt ending left me feeling quite empty.

Close to Home.......2005-08-15

In many ways this book mirrored several of our family situations and on several occassions I questioned if my mom had written it. I had hoped it would have been a more laugh out loud book but nevertheless it brought many thought provoking grins to my face. By the end of the book I was glad there was a sequel and enjoyed it as well.

Sweet but mediocre..........2005-06-23

A nice, quiet read, but the characters leave something to be wished for. It started out great and I loved the integration of the gardening wisdom, but the ending left me speechless. A bit absurd.
