Wild at Heart rocks! Perfect view of God and men - No. A great motivator for men to develop a deep and very personal relationship with God - Yes. Having read the book a couple of times, and now having read other John Eldredge books, I can tell you that my spiritual walk with God has been completely changed in a very meaningful way. In fact 'changed' is probably a word that does not completely convey the real impact of the message on my life -- 'Warped Across the Universe' would be more descriptive.

As a few reviewers have highlighted, the book is not perfect. Nor is it the answer to every man's questions about his masculinity and how we are all formed in God's image. It simply provides a strong framework to think differently about what it means to be a man but yet a Christian.

As mentioned again by several reviewers, although the book has a little bravado here and there, it is not license to mistreat other people, especially not the women in our life's. The message is very clear. Although the God is a Warrior, He is also a compelling force who loves mankind deeply.

Bottom-line about this book is that message, can at least for some men, revolutionize their thinking about God, Church, their families and their relationships with other people. It has changed me in a personal a deep manner that this review cannot even begin to express.

Wild at Heart.......2007-07-26

Eldredge provides a much needed masculine approach to spirituality, often the church, has soften Jesus and many of the men in churches too, to such a point that the popular image of Jesus reflects little of the masculine nature. Eldredge recovers the masculine Jesus and the a male Spirituality. I highly recommend this book to men in the church.

What the Politically Correct Refuse To Admit.......2007-03-17

WILD AT HEART is a book that explains what man's created personality is suppose to be. After reading it, you began to understand the feelings that you experience and why words, especially as a child, can hurt you. Yoou will see why, when later in life you face situations which trouble you, you have trouble as to why they do. You also can see why so many men feel inadequate or unfulfilled, even when the people around you think you are experiencing the ultimate in success.

All around, WILD AT HEART is one of the best books I have read on why men are the way they are and what they were meant to be.

This book was my first introduction to John Eldredge's thoughts. I have read it four times since starting the first time in 2003. It is considered by some the new classic on how to be a man, and more specifically, how to be a Christian man.

Eldredge's main premise is that men and women were created differently, and that we were created with specific roles, or character traits that we need to nourish if we are to be who God wants us to be. His main 4 areas are that a man needs:

1. A Wound to Heal
2. A Battle to Fight
3. An Adventure to Live
4. A Beauty to Rescue

He unpacks each of these in a variety of ways. I have read this book, worked through the Field Manual and the DVD curriculum series by myself, with one close friend, and then facilitated it in a group setting. Most men were hesitant to embrace all the ideas yet many came around by the time we were half way through the book.

"Deep in a man's heart are some fundamental questions that simply cannot be answered at a kitchen table. Who am I? What am I made of? What am I destined for?" p. 5

"The plan from the beginning of time was that his father would lay the foundation for a young boy's heart, and pass on to him that essential knowledge and confidence in his strength." p.62

"He created Adam for adventure, battle and beauty; he created us for a unique place in his story and he is committed to bringing us back to the original design." p.103

"You are a new creation in Christ. The New Testament calls you a saint, a holy one, a son of God. In the core of your being you are a good man. Yes, there is a war within us, but it is a civil war." p.145

These are but a few samples of the writing from the book. The one draw- back of the DVD curriculum is that it does not follow the book exactly, and with 12 chapters in the book and field manual that follow each other exactly and 8 in the DVD, it doesn't seem weighted evenly.

Check it out; it will be worth it.

good alternative for non-readers.......2007-01-13

I purchased this book for a family member who does not read very fast. Someone has recommended the book "Wild at Heart" for this family member. However, he has not benefited from the book because he has been turned off by his reading skills. With the audio book, he now is being blessed by what is taught by God through the author. He is in disc 6 as I write this review! : )

Wild at Heart is a great book, it is geared toward men but it is a book that anyone who has a husband or son should read. It has alot of real life examples and for me that is easier to relate to. It is a Christian must read!!

Are you SURE there's only one guy doing all those voices?.......2000-07-01

Nifty collection of vignettes, featuring 'the old detective' (Nick Danger?) bantering with a screenwriter, trying to cash in one last time on his eventful, twisted life. Great story within a story, as the detective balks and stalls, then proceeds off on another tangent.

The 'detective' appearances are interleaved with other stories, so your entertainment is varied - there is a 'coming of age' story that should bring back personal memories of when you first hit the wide world, where there were all kinds of people, not put there for your approval - and doing just fine, thank you!

The best story is never mentioned in other reviews! - "The Precipice of Angels" - about a lateralist in LA. What's a 'lateralist'? You'll have to listen to the story, I can't do it justice! It's laugh-out-loud funny, and heartbreakingly sad, all at the same time - I don't know how he did it. Filled with home town LA landmarks - I spent several years in LA, I can appreciate the surrealism of 'careening through all the rain water on Sepulveda' (from the first "Nick Danger" appearance).

It didn't happen often - like having a collection THIS good!

Geared heavily toward high-tech communications writers but of use to any Web surfer, this pocket-size manual employs a very simple structure: it contains a short and well-organized discussion on writing technical material clearly and interestingly; a compact but thorough dictionary of relevant terms; a brief style FAQ (with answers to questions such as, "What's the deal with all those capital letters in the middle of words?"); and a petite index.

The introduction offers 10 "Principles for Writing Well in the Digital Age," encouraging you to "play with voice," "capture the colloquial," and "flaunt your subcultural literacy," all trademarks of Wired's tendency to be esoteric. Sure, it's fun and cool to be colloquial and subculturally in the know, but it's just as important to be widely understood. Indeed a bit pompous, but has still a bigger issue.......2004-05-19

Think of "Wired Style" as the 'Chicago Manual of Style' (well, sort of) as stated by Newsweek back in 1999 when this book first came out, and you probably by now can realize where the fundamental problem of the book is. While it does come accross as a bit pompous at times, indeed, the biggest issue it has is the fact that it hasn't been updated since its first edition, five years ago, an entire lifetime by Internet standards. As a result, several ubiquitous terms that you run into everywhere today are missing: blog, RSS, CSS, XHTML, flat panel, and the list goes on and on. So, as much as they ditch the more conservative AP Stylebook, it is not that much better as a tool for editors/writers working in the "digital age", so I don't see much of a point in buying it at this point any more.

An outstanding e-reference.......2004-03-03

This is one of my all-time favorite style guides. Compact, up-to-date, informational yet fun to read. Wired Style answers questions that apparently never occurred to Strunk and White (or to Chicago Manual of Style). The answers are not as prescriptive as those in some style guides, but are written more like "guides" that reveal the thought processes behind the suggestions.

Not the greatest book, but still indispensible.......2003-01-15

There's no doubt that the Wired Style guide is not the best style guide ever written; that said, with Chicago and AP still shockingly behind on integrating usages of Internet and technology-based words into their guides, this book is absolutely indispensible. AP might give three varients of an online word, but Wired gives a more complete listing of all known varients. Whether you like it or not, if you write about the Internet, or ever have to explain Web strategy to someone in writing, you need this book. The other sources out there just don't cut it.

And, as a bonus, if you use a word like "usability," and everyone looks at you funny, this book gives you a backup reference to point to, so you don't look like the one inventing words. (This has in fact happened to me, and it made me question who could possibly not have heard of usability in this day and age -- oh well.)

Valuable resource.......2001-07-24

There is often a debate on how to treat a tech word like email. Should we be like AP or the way the digital press speaks? I found this a great compendium of latest logic in the lexicon of technology. Additionally, the editors are self-deprecating enough to suggest that the standard will likely change -- standby.

Great reference manual.......2001-07-06

As an editor of an online publication, I find myself picking up Wired Style again and again. It has great definitions for terms that frequently come up. Want to know what open source is? Or asynchronous transfer mode? There's also cute stuff in there, like who coined the word nerd (Dr. Seuss). I'm not sure I would pick this book up just to read, but if you're in a position where you need to look up terms quickly, this is the best out there in the high-tech arena.
