Dated...already?.......2004-12-15
First of all, anyone interested in this book should turn to the MSDN library for the latest info and samples. The problem with this book is that it's _already_ outdated in terms of the features that will be included (and not included) with .Net 2.0.
While it does "hold your hand" as you play with the shiny new toys in ASP.Net 2.0 like GridView and DetailsView, what will ultimately happen is that you will find yourself being confused by what's in the book and what's actually implemented since the framework hasn't even been finalized yet and is constantly being updated (i.e. ObjectDataSources and ObjectSpaces).
My personal recommendation is to skim this book in a bookstore (or pick it up used) to get an idea of some of the features that are in version 2 of the framwork.
Aside from the above, I find that the contents really focus more on UI and some of the additions to ASP.Net such as GridView, DetailsView, Membership, Personalization, WebParts, etc.; there is really no discussion about some of the other features of .Net 2.0 (framework as a whole) which are rather significant like Generics.
In the end, I think this book isn't going to occupy much of your time or interest or fill any particular need that can't be filled by visiting MSDN for the latest info on .Net 2.0
Great into to ASP.NET.......2004-05-02
If you are an ASP veteran and want to get quickly up to speed with ASP.NET, this is your book. The differences between the two are highlighted often and you'll be up and running with ASP.NET in no time. If you're looking for an ASP.NET reference, you'll be disappointed. This book is not a reference work. For that see the VS.NET help or get another book to compliment this one.
With specific troubleshooting problems to watch out for.......2004-04-04
The collaborative effort of software development experts Alex Homer, Dave Sussman, and Rob Howard, A First Look At ASP.NET v. 2.0 is a methodical handbook, reference, and self-teaching aid for the Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0 Web development platform. Demonstrating how to effectively use ASP.NET to reduce development time and associated costs; improve the performance of Web applications and services; extend applications to mobile clients, and so much more, A First Look At ASP.NET v. 2.0 is a superbly organized and presented introductory guide filled from cover to cover with examples, sample code, and broad overviews -- as well as specific troubleshooting problems to watch out for.
Delightful!.......2004-02-06
I ordered this book a few weeks after ordering my tech preview copy of Visual Studio.NET "Whidbey" and got them both in the mail on the same day. I've read the book and am just starting to work with the amazing new tools, technologies and techniques it describes, and I can't remember the last time I was this excited about an upcoming developer tools release. ASP.NET 2.0 resolves 99% of the issues I have with ASP.NET 1.x and introduces lots of new mind-boggling features that I never knew I needed, but now I wonder how I ever lived without.
If you're an ASP.NET developer and are planning to upgrade your skills to the new platform, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book. I read it in about two weeks of bedtime reading and could have finished it in a few days if I'd invested any real time, so it's not a big investment of effort to get through. The authors do a great job of sticking to just the new features and assuming that their readers all know ASP.NET 1.x pretty thoroughly, so there was little wasted space. All code samples were in VB.NET, which was a little weird, but it was very refreshing not to see the same code repeated in VB anc C#, which so many books do to pad their page count.
If I have one complaint about the book, it's that there is no reference in it to the sample code and applications available online. The authors have a web site with working versions of all of the example applications used in the book, along with downloadable code so those of us with the tech preview of Whidbey can have a good starting point. Here's the URL:

Time to get excited about Whidbey.......2003-12-31
A First Look is one of the first, if not the first, books on "Whidbey", the codename for Microsoft's new version of ASP.NET version 2.0. At the time I'm writing this, ASP.NET v2.0 "Whidbey" is in the Alpha stages and not even released into Beta, but already it has caused quite a stir in the ASP.NET development circles. The latest information I have heard is that Beta 1 will be out at the beginning of May 2004 and Beta 2 will be the first release that includes the "go-live" license so that anyone can host a website using Whidbey.
The first chapter of the book starts out with an introduction to "Whidbey" and briefly covers many of the impressive features, giving a strong "wow factor". The second chapter touches on Visual Studio "Whidbey" and then the rest of the book covers "Whidbey" development and administration in detail. Whidbey is something worth writing about and the authors have done a great job covering the whole spectrum of impressive new features.
So, what type of book is this? It's not just a book trying to show off the ease and power of Whidbey, otherwise I'm sure I would have been bored before too long. It's a book that is both a reference book and a readable book on "Whidbey" that gets into the features in detail and expounds on the properties, methods and other aspects of v2.0. There is really so much to cover that some parts weren't covered at all or only briefly in this book. For example XML and ADO.NET each get their own book. Also, as this is specifically about the changes that Whidbey offers, you won't see mention of anything that isn't new or changed. Again, the target audience isn't the non-ASP.NET developer.
Code examples were generously given, and in my opinion, a good balance of small and simple, offering a foundation to work with. One example where I wasn't disappointed was the Client callbacks, a new Client-Side Script feature. The description of it was good enough but I was itching to see a code example, and sure enough they gave one. Expect to see code examples in Visual Basic for most of the major features and many of the sub-features. There are dozens of great code examples that will at least get your feet wet.
I have to try hard to come up with any cons for this book, but there are two things I noticed. I found that there wasn't consistency throughout the book in regards to documentation, code examples and other reference information. Sometimes you would find reference charts, code examples, even flow charts while other times there is just a quick mention in paragraph form of a new feature or change to an existing feature. This really isn't as bad as it sounds, the features that have the largest target audience and `wow factor' are well covered. The second thing I wish this had is a better means of locating the reference information. There isn't a cross-reference chart or means to quickly find much of the great information, and when I have used this as my reference guide for some development it look me a while to find what I was looking for. But, with a few bookmarks and a highlighter this could quickly become a great tool to use as a primary reference for development in Whidbey.
One of the things that I appreciated most was the inside knowledge that all three authors offer. They don't just cover specs and reference material, but give information on the goals of the ASP.NET Team on various features, and vision on what will be available in the Beta and final releases of the product. This is one of those books that you don't think twice about its accuracy and correctness. I found the book enjoyable although my wife (a non-developer) started getting sick of me telling her all the details of Whidbey. It's one of those topics and books that you just need to tell someone about and my wife happened to be the unfortunate recipient of my excitement.
I would highly recommend A First Look to existing ASP.NET Developers. The topic is exciting and the authors did a great job of covering the bases in an enjoyable and easy to follow format. Now it's just a matter of waiting until Whidbey is fully released so that development with Whidbey can be shown to the world.

Book Description
Fear and greed are terms that make light of the uncertainty in the finance world. Huge global financial institutions rely on emotional relations of trust and distrust to suppress the uncertainties. Many financial firms develop policies towards risk, rather than accepting the reality of an uncertain future. They amass data in the futile hope of gaining certainty and to claim their options are more risk-freea than competitors. Emotions in Finance examines the views of experienced elites in the international financial world. It argues the current financial era is driven by a utopianism a hope--that the future can be collapsed into the present. It points out policy implications of this short-term view at the unstable peak of global finance. This book provides a timely account of the influence of emotion and speculation on the worldas increasingly volatile financial sector. The author includes absorbing interview material from public and private bankers in the United States, UK and Australia.

Overall decent, but missing some cases and lousy software.......2002-02-14
Overall, the Casebriefs has been tremendously useful for me. However, it is missing some significant cases from LaFave. And the software interface is amazingly bad and not user friendly. These days even shareware software programs have friendly, effective interfaces. Gilbert Law needs to spend a couple dollars and have someone re-write their software interface program.

Book Description
This photo of Escherichia coli being attacked by bacteriophages highlights rapidly developing technologies for using phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections without destroying normal resident bacteria, and without side effects. Phages are also being used to detect and remove pathogens from our food supplies, both plant and animal. Also exciting is the use of phages as vehicles to delivery DNA vaccines, often directly to mammalian immune system cells. Recent work also suggests possible antitumor effects of phages. We stand on the edge of a whole new world of exploration and applications of microbiology.

It's ok.......2006-02-19
It's an okay book. I needed it for a class. There are several mistakes on the diagrams (our professor noted which ones).
Lots of typos and missing info........2006-01-07
Good study guide when the answers were in the back. Sometimes the answers were off by one or non existent. If you can get past that, it does help, but jeez don't they employ a proofreader? For thirty bucks, I was kind of disappointed. The textbook is great.
Wonderfully Informative Book!!!.......2005-12-12
WOW! I love this book. Every time I read part of it I learn so much stuff that I never knew before. It is fairly advanced information but it is written in a very understandable way. I am in high school and I like it because it teaches in the same format as my school's biology text books. I use this book because I like to read about this stuff. It is so facinating. If you are in a high school biology class, read this and you will be light years ahead of every one else!
Great book for teachers and students.......2005-09-17
This text explains some very complex information in a very reader-friendly way. The photos, charts and practical examples of how microbiology impacts everyone's life make it very readable. I would recommend it for teachers and students!
Micro Made Easy.......2005-09-14
This is one of the best text books I have ever used. The information is clear, concise, and interesting. It gives examples throughout the book of how microbiology is being used now to help us.

Book Description
While the theory of special relativity is often associated with the idea of traveling faster than light, this book shows that in all these cases subtle forces of nature conspire to prevent these motions being harnessed to send signals faster than the speed of light.
The author tackles these topics both conceptually, with minimal or no mathematics, and quantitatively, making use of numerous illustrations to clarify the discussion. The result is a joy to read for both scientists familiar with the subject and laypeople wishing to understand something of special relativity.
Customer Reviews:
A real gem of a book.......2007-08-15
This book starts out with the usual basics of special relativity such as Lorentz transformations. It goes on to deal in some depth with such fascinating phenomena as the possibility of faster than light (superluminal) motion and the existence of especially strange particles called tachyons. Moses Fayngold accomplishes quite a feat by successfully combining the style of a popular science book with the real content of a textbook. I am an avid reader of science books (of all kinds) and I have rarely come across such a wonderful example of scientific writing. Dr. Fayngold displays a thorough understanding of educational techniques. While popular science books can be inspiring, they never leave me feeling like I have gained any actual knowledge. Textbooks, on the other hand, while full of details, lack the ability to instill a wonder at the universe that a well written popular science book can achieve. This book gives explanations of the phenomena as well as any textbook but the details are immersed in a big picture analysis that makes it worthwhile to work through the formulas and details. Reading it gave me the kind of thrill at the complexity and beauty of our universe which I only get out of popular science books. At the same time, I felt that I learned the subject at an equal depth as I would in a college course. I loved the light (unintimidating) narration tone and the little instructive tales used to illustrate the concepts. I would highly recommend this book both for personal education reading and as a textbook companion for a physics course.
A well written book!.......2006-11-28
This is a very well written book as well as very interesting and accurate.
Special Relativity and Motions Faster than Light.......2003-10-01
Everybody knows that motion of objects with the speed faster than light is impossible.
Dr. Moses Fayngold wrote a 309-page book about superluminal motions. Not a science fiction work, not a fantasy, but a book on special relativity written by a theoretical physicist, an expert in this field. It is as serious and accurate as a scientific journal publication, and as absorbing and entertaining as a good scientific popularization. Among hundreds books on relativity this one is special. It covers a variety of topics, including the most recent ones that could not always be found in the classical publications. I read it with increasing interest, gave it to my colleagues, and would recommend it to both professionals and students.
Many will be surprised to find in the book something they had not even thought about. I am sure that the book will have more editions.
Prof. Edward Parilis
California Institute of Technology
New Book on Special Relativity.......2003-09-24
This book is a rare example of the treatment that is profoundly instructive and enjoyable to read. In it the features of a reading book for educated laymen blend successfully with rigorousness and depth of a monograph for professional scientists. Intriguing and thought provoking, it can be used by students to learn basic principles of the theory of relativity, and by physics teachers to illustrate these principles and analyze their implications before any student audience.
In many discussions of the theory of relativity there is only a brief mentioning about motions faster than light. This produced a spectrum of speculations, including a widespread and totally misleading opinion among many that such motions are impossible in principle.
Moses Fayngold gives a brilliant discussion of superluminal motions and shows how they relate to the theory. Some of the problems discussed by him are unique and cannot be found in any other book.
I would recommend "Relativity and Motions Faster than Light" to anyone who wants to get a deep understanding of one of the cornerstones of Modern Physics.
Book Description
Once upon a time there was a mean, dying GOP chairman who had a brilliant scheme to assure that his man would retain the office of president of the United States of America. And the only man who could pull off this elaborate plan was a celebrated Hollywood director. Add to the mix a left-coast gumshoe named Broz who is trapped among cover-ups, undercover work, and his own morality, a cast of bicoastal desperate characters, and the stage is set for a powerful D.C./L.A. production. From Edgar award winning author Larry Beinhart, Wag the Dog was the most brilliant political satire of the last decade. It was made into a classic film by Barry Levinson, and, fortunately, is now back in print.
Customer Reviews:
Wag the Dog, top notch political satire........2005-02-08
In its first iteration, Larry Beinhart's satirical novel based on the underlying events that led up to the first Gulf War was titled American Hero. The popular movie, loosely based on the book, was titled Wag the Dog. Now, ten years after its first release, the book has been re-published by Nations Books using the title from the film.
Wag the Dog opens with Jim Baker, advisor to the first President Bush, visiting the dying Lee Atwater, the architect of the Bush victory over Michael Dukakis and a brilliant campaign strategist who was never constrained by ethical considerations. Atwater gives Baker a letter that contains a strategy to save the sagging Bush presidency before the next election. Baker shares the letter and the strategy with the President: a made for television war. Top Hollywood director John Lincoln Beagle is recruited to direct this extravaganza that will be poured into American homes in glorious red, white, blue.
Of course, Beagle's involvement in this project is one of the most carefully guarded secrets in America. His agent puts out the story that he is ill and unavailable. Movie star Meggie Krebs, expecting to be featured in Beagle's next film, suddenly finds that she has been dumped. In an effort to build a breach of contract case, Maggie entices Joe Broz, a security firm consultant, away from his firm to help her gather information. When a former Beagle assistant is murdered, Maggie and Broz realize more is going on than just the avoidance of litigation. Enter the usual suspects: the CIA, the FBI, the military, and assorted contractors and their employees who are directed by high administration officials.
Wag the Dog is an intelligently conceived and skillfully written book. It is a very humorous, engaging read. And although a decade has passed since its first publication, it has as much relevancy and bite as it did when it first appeared. It is an important work of political satire that should be ranked with Animal Farm, Brave New World, and 1984. You will be entertained by the story and disquieted by the fact that our political "reality" has gone beyond the fictive world that some of our most imaginative writers can create.
