Good book For Hardware Support.......2006-11-06
Great book, easy to understand a little bit expensive but its worth it
Lot of info, but horrible to read, review.......2006-09-16
I got this book for my PC Technology Class, I've used it for 2 weeks, and I just hate this book. The thing that gets me mad the most is that its ALL OVER THE PLACE. They'll be talking about the BIOS, then go to expansion slots for like 3 pages, and then go back to Bios's again (pg 197-208). It's very confusing to follow, they should have sections, instead of cramming everything without header titles. The only good thing I like about it is that is has a lot of info, but if you have the time, and patience to find it, then this book is probably OK for you.
Just In Time.......2006-03-10
Taking a computer class one night a week is more than enough for any average person w/ a full-time job. After the registration, the school location and the reality of how much books cost new these days. Amazon came through for me a week before class and this was after tracking all the various campuses and tips from friends. Buying the book used same me easily $30 to $40. The is in great condition, you would of thought it was new.
Good resource, but only to a point. . ........2006-02-17
I enrolled in an online course with Thomson Education Direct (which has recently changed to Penn Foster). The course was designed to prepare me to pass the A+ exam and this textbook was part of the package I received after I graduated. The book is loaded with information and includes end-of-chapter questions and exercises to help you prepare for the A+ exam, plus a CD with further instructional material and test questions. I take the tests first thing, to see where I stand, and find that, unfortunately, the test questions are riddled with mistakes, but I think, No problem. Though the book is a fifth edition, the CD is probably a new thing and that could account for the mistakes. I'll just use the textbook to check the test questions and make sure they're correct.
Unfortunately, the textbook, because it is designed to be used in a classroom setting, provides no answers for the end-of-chapter questions and exercises, so if you're studying independently, it's impossible to check your work to make sure you're correct. I thought, No problem. The student manual lists an instructor's edition which comes with an Electronic Instructor's Manual, Solutions to all the end of chapter material, ExamView, PowerPoint presentations, Figure Files and a Daily Lesson Planner. All you have to do, according to the ad, is go to the listed website (http://www.course.com/pcrepair). So, I go to the site, type the author's name, Jean Andrews, into the search box, up comes the book, and I order it, no sweat. With shipping it runs right around $83.00, a lot for a book, but since it will prepare me for the A+, I'm willing to spend the money.
Unfortunately, it's a waste. The book that arrives is exactly like the student's manual I already have, no answers to any questions at all. I think, No problem. I'll just call customer service to see when the additional resources are going to arrive.
Unfortunately, I am told I can't get the additional resources, because I am not an instructor. Not only that, I learn that because I am a private buyer, I cannot send the Instructor's Edition back and get a refund. Two facts they fail to mention on either the website or in the student's text. I am also informed that the additional resources, supposedly included with the textbook, come at an additional cost. I think, Now, we've got a problem. I'm out $83.00, and Thomson's attitude seems to be "Too bad, so sad." Not exactly what I expect when this entire misunderstanding is due to their faulty advertising.
I'm sorry I ever ran across Thomson, if this is the best they can do for their customers. They seem to be a lot more concerned with preventing cheating than helping someone get certified, because this textbook was provided to me AFTER I graduated from their course when the resources that could help me answer the questions were no longer available to me. Also, you have to wonder, if all the instructor's resources aren't available to the average joe, why are they listed in the student's manual with a source where you can buy them? When I get my A+ certification, I'm sorry to say it will be in spite of Thomson, not because of them.
Good luck.......2006-02-14
I didn't read this book yet. I just enrolled at A+ at local IT school and they rec-d only this book.
Book Description
'Regulation and Compliance in Operations' looks at how regulation affects the operations function by focusing on regulatory issues and drivers. As regulatory demands ever increasing, it is important for operations teams to be aware of the important regulatory issues which exist globally.
Like any other part of an organization in the financial services industry, operations has rules and regulations to comply with. Although many view regulation as being about rooting out rogue traders and controlling speculators, its role is much more profound than this, and without it many more 'scandals' would undoubtedly occur.
The problem for the regulator is that unless total oversight of every transaction, account, business and individual can be made, there will always be rogue traders or more recent examples like Enron and World.Com. As such intense oversight is not practical, the regulator can only do so much, with most of the responsibility resting with the firms and organizations themselves.
For operations teams their role in protecting the firm stems from their ability to manage critical processes like reconciliation, asset position agreements and the nostro accounts efficiently and effectively. Regulators need the help and support of the businesses to have a 'business-friendly environment'. When some abuse the trust placed in them and the regulatory environment, a 'scandal' or worse occurs, with the result that the majority are penalized as regulators react to criticism and apply more onerous regulations.
It is often the operations teams that bear most, or at least some, of the repercussions of greater regulatory oversight of the business. It is therefore vitally important for operations teams to have a firm understanding of the regulatory issues and drivers. This book will help you gain that understanding, as well as looking at the important regulatory issues in the various global markets in which your business operates.
* This book completes the popular Securities Institute Operations Management Series
* Explains the role of regulation and compliance in UK, US and global financial markets
* Provides a valuable perspective from the operations department viewpoint without getting caught up in the minute details of regulations
Customer Reviews:
Helpful but not Insightful.......2005-01-04
I was looking for a book that would provide a good overview and fundamental descriptions of the regulatory and compliance domain. This book does provide somewhat of an overview but primarily from a U.K. and FSA perspective. However, it didn't provide any insights as to where the weaknesses were with regards to compliance or any statistical data relating to the frequency of non-compliance in the industry.
Too much of the book was focused on "one time" events like Enron, Worldcom and Maxwell where the frauds perpetrated were systemic. In those instances there were "generally accepted" business principals that were ignored by the company's involved, their auditors and the inability of the regulatory agencies to act. Operations in those instances could not act without dire consequences. Just look at what happened to the whistleblowers even after the truth was out.
Nor was there any mention of systems, workflow or operations solutions to the issues of compliance and equally important regulatory reporting. For example, given the number of agencies now involved in regulations, consistency of reporting is a critical element. Firms want to avoid reporting different results to the various agencies. In addition, no mention was made of the fact that taken collectively, some regulations are contradictory and subject to interpretation. How do firms deal with the ambiguity of the regulations? How do firms keep up to date of upcoming regulations and ensure they are in compliance?
It appears from the book that operations compliance is still a "mechanical" process while in fact it has become critical business and industry reputation issue. The financial services industry has been going through a transition over the past 10 years and the confidence of the customers has diminished. A level playing field, which regulators should be trying to provide, will build customer confidence and compliance in operations is one way firms can help achieve this.
Perhaps a book on the trends in the industry, the problems and the potential consequences of compliance and how operations can prepare for them would be valuable to readers.

Description:
We often see reputation used by regulators to enhance their regulatory leverage, specifically through the implicit threat that a discovered violation today will result in increased inspection intensity in the future. This paper uses the Harford and Harrington (J. Public. Econ. 45 (1991) 391) model as the basis to develop a regulatory game in which the regulator commits to an inspection regime based on reputation and firms react to this regulation by maximizing their profits through choice of costly compliance. An optimal policy is then defined as the reputation-based inspection rates which result in the highest steady-state compliance. It is shown that under this definition of optimal policy, there are initially increasing returns to adding reputation groups, but that these returns erode and are eventually decreasing. Transitional dynamics implied by these policies are examined, and it is shown that at the margin, adding another reputation group may increase steady-state compliance, but the transition times may increase by orders of magnitude. Furthermore, it is shown that forgiving previous violations is never optimal.
Book Description
"Without the protection of human and property rights, and a comprehensive framework of laws, no equitable development is possible. A government must ensure that it has an effective system of property, contracts, labor, bankruptcy, commercial codes, personal rights law and other elements of a comprehensive legal system that is effectively, impartially, and cleanly administered by a well-functioning, impartial and honest judicial and legal system." -- James D. Wolfensohn, World Bank President
This book presents a selection of papers discussed at a global conference on comprehensive legal and judicial development sponsored by the World Bank in June 2000, in partnership with the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the United Nations Development Programme.
This was the first truly global symposium of its kind, uniting practitioners and experts in legal and judicial development in the broadest cross-disciplinary sense--including over 600 judges, government officials, academics, managers of economic assistance agencies, and representatives of nongovernmental organizations from all over the world.
The questions they addressed are of universal concern, and the papers collected here show the diversity of possible answers according to the needs and circumstances of individual countries.

Book Description
Modern notions and important tools of classical mechanics are used in the study of concrete examples that model physically significant molecular and atomic systems. The parametric nature of these examples leads naturally to the study of the major qualitative changes of such systems (metamorphoses) as the parameters are varied. The symmetries of these systems, discrete or continuous, exact or approximate, are used to simplify the problem through a number of mathematical tools and techniques like normalization and reduction. The book moves gradually from finding relative equilibria using symmetry, to the Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation and its relation to monodromy and, finally, to generalizations of monodromy.

Book Description
Techniques and Topics in Flow Measurement covers the applications and techniques of flow measurement. This definitive book provides guidelines for choosing appropriate techniques and assuring valid measurements as well as describes methods for treatment of calibration data in fluid flow under various conditions. The book also covers three systems of units: the SI system, the English Absolute Dimensional system, and the English Engineering system. Commonly used - and often misused - variables such as force, weight, and pressure are defined, and the relationships between the systems for these common variables are summarized. One of the many unique features of Techniques and Topics in Flow Measurement is the number of ready-to-use tables included throughout the text. Tables are provided for such commonly encountered variables as the saturation vapor pressure of water; the composition of dry air; the compressibility factor for air; air-free and air-saturated water density; viscosity of dry air, nitrogen, and other gases; and specific heat/specific volume ratios for dry air, water vapor, and moist air. Another unique feature of this book is the number of highly relevant examples. The author includes examples/exercises that demonstrate applications for density calculations; water vapor mixing ratio determination; gas viscosity interpolation; NIST guideline applications; buoyancy corrections; and more.

Sarah can't resist the opportunity to skewer the women desperate enough to go on TV to snag a man, and the man shallow enough to view dating as a ratings game. Armed with a killer wardrobe, sun-kissed highlights and her reporter's notebook, she sets out to discover what happens at the posh California resort when the cameras stop rolling. What she discovers is that this alternate reality is more seductive than she ever expected. Caught up in a whirlwind of moonlight swims, limo rides, and champagne toasts, Sarah stops working on her article and starts wanting to win. As she dodges hard-core husband hunters, slimy producers, voyeuristic cameramen, and her own burgeoning feelings, she comes to discover the real-life adventure behind love, marriage, and motherhood. Jennifer O'Connell's snappy heroine, savvy voice, and timely premise give readers a sensational story. BACHELORETTE #1 is a fabulously fun and fast-paced novel that looks at one of the major trends of recent years."
Customer Reviews:
So much potential but disapointing........2007-07-05
I was really excited to read this book because it got such good reviews and the story line sounded really good. A 30 something part time writer/stay at home mom is sent to participate in a reality TV show "The Stag" so that she could do a story on the behind the scenes happenings. Tell me that doesn't have potential to be great chick lit! I was really disapointed. The main character is not quirky or endearing in any way. In my opinion, she would have never lasted with the guy because she wasn't ineresting in any way, she wasn't even very nice or flirty with him. It wasn't like the book really dragged or anything, it was just kind of boring, not much happened. Actually, the only reason I finished this book was beacuse it was so short, by the time you realised that nothing was ever going to happen, you are 3 chapters away from the end and you figure, why not finish it? I wouldn't say to never read this book but there are others that would be way higher on my list and definately don't pay full price for it.
cute take-off on The Bachelor.......2007-07-05
After reading Insider Dating, I was left wanting more so I bought a couple of other books by Jennifer O'Connell. I read Bachelorette #1 in just a few days because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Yes, it is a take-off on The Bachelor, but with a twist. The main character, Sarah Holmes, who has a husband and toddler, is given the assignment to be one of the bachelorettes in order to write an exposé for the magazine that employs her. The story is a bit predictable in some places; however, I was very impressed with the character development and Ms. O'Connell's attention to detail. I felt like I was watching a season of The Bachelor as a fly on the wall. The ending holds rewarding surprises for the reader.
The release of this novel was timely since it draws from reality TV during its height. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a well-written, entertaining, easy to read story. Perfect for a day at the beach!
"The Stag" or "The Bachelor"?.......2007-03-17
First of all, the plot for the fictional television show "The Stag" in this book is identical to the reality show "The Bachelor" on ABC. I wonder if the creators of "The Bachelor" were upset with O'Connell for copying their story. As far as "Bachelorette #1" goes, I liked it, but I expected it to be even better. The plot of the book is a great idea, but I feel that O'Connell's execution was less than satisfactory. On a positive note, the sexual encounters in the book aren't overly explicit, which I'm finding to be a rarity in chic-lit. Overall though I'd have to say that there are much better options on the market; for some reason this book never really held me captive the way the best ones do.
fun read.......2006-05-08
I read this in one sitting--it's a fast, fun read. I thought it wouldn't be believable because of the premise, but Sarah's emotional twists and turns as her reality show experience unfolded rang true.
The Bachelor .......2006-02-09
This storyline was drawn 99.9% from The Bachelor television series. The twist with this story is that one of the 25 women selected is a 'plant,' and she's actually a married
investigative reporter (with a child). The writing was good, but there is no originality in terms of the storyline. It was a complete Bachelor takeoff; the book is ok to read if you're a die-hard Bachelor fan, but basically, if you've seen the show you don't need to read this book. The only difference between this book and the actual series is that The Bachelor on tv gives away roses and this bachelor lights a candle.
