Book Description
This book by two popular developer/writers takes advanced developers and software designers who use Visual Basic under the covers of the Microsoft .NET Platform to provide an in-depth understanding of its structure, function, and operational components. Developers get an in-depth understanding of the technology's structure and function so they can make informed application design choices. They also get expert advice on application design and performance optimization issues. This book details the .NET infrastructure and architecture, then shows its practical implications with tons of sample code written in Visual Basic .NET.
Customer Reviews:
Great for CLR internals/patterns.......2006-09-10
The title is misleading, but the material is wonderful. (This book was originally published in C#, and the 2.0 edition of this book is titled CLR via C#.) If you already have a working knowledge of VB.Net 1.0/1.1 and want to gain a deeper understanding of the CLR internals and some essential patterns, this is the best place to start. Unless you are a seasoned developer, this should not be your first book on .Net.
This book contains a wealth of information that is not available through MSDN and often difficult to find anywhere else. This version, VB.Net, contains a few items that aren't in the C# version, e.g., the difference between DirectCast and CType, but it's definitely not worth purchasing if you already have the C# edition.
I especially enjoyed Richter's coverage of the following:
Primitive Types (especially the bit about constants being compiled into IL)
Events & Delegates (their relationship may surprise some VB developers)
Exception Patterns & Strategies
Garbage Collection & IDisposable
Tough Read.......2005-05-12
I am a technical person. I have developed using VB for nearly ten years now. This is the first .Net book I picked up. It was a mistake. I found that many of the topics covered in this book were easier to learn using other sources.
Great work: needs Summary info.......2004-07-06
This is a great contribution to understanding the .Net framework. I would have liked for Jeff to have included a "Best Practices" or "List of Recommendations" based on his many findings. There's so much content to remember, that it will be hard to use it as a reference if his recommendation isn't in the section/chapter you think.
The Summary Info could be a download or an appendix. Just a thought.
A mastery of the material does not make a good book.......2004-05-20
Mr. Richter has an incredible mastery of the elements of the .NET Framework. As others have observed, Microsoft development teams could indeed benefit from reading the book. (In fact, there are several instances in which Mr. Richter critiques the implementation that Microsoft has provided and offers his recommendation on how it could be improved.) Unfortunately, you would have to be a member of a Microsoft development team to have enough grounding in the concepts presented here to benefit from Mr. Richter's expertise. What it comes down to is there's a difference between presenting material and providing the tools that enable a learning experience to occur.
Book not really in Stock.......2003-04-10
I recently placed an order for the book. The listing for the book says it usually ships in 1 to 2 days. Once I place the order, I could see that the book would not SHIP for 1.5 weeks! Now I would consider canceling the order, but I can't because it has entered the shipping process. There is still a week before it ships.

Book Description
Six years ago, the World Bank created the Inspection Panel, an independent mechanism to respond to claims by those whom the Bank intends to help the most, inhabitants of developing countries, if they believe they are being adversely affected by projects funded by the Bank. A second review of the Panel's experience became necessary when the focus of the Panel changed from concentration on the Bank's compliance or non-compliance with its own policies to harm suffered or to be suffered by affected parties. This report covers the Panel's investigations from its inception and opens a window onto the operations of the Bank.

Book Description
The last few decades have seen a rapid growth of interest in the mangrove ecosystems. This is due, on the one hand, to the perception that mangrove ecosystems are valuable resources, and, on the other hand, due to vested economic interests. There is an accelerated rate of destruction of mangroves worldwide. Almost all nations of the world tropical belt are concerned with the conservation of this natural wealth, but surreptitiously permit the misuse of mangroves for quick monetary returns unabatedly. The scientific community and decision makers of many nations are now in a state of alert, requesting sound directives for the sustainable use of mangroves worldwide. The present publication is an attempt to present in an organized manner the present state of knowledge which could be useful for decision makers and of interest to all those who see the ecological and economical potential of the various types of mangrove ecosystems.

Book Description
This excellent book covers techniques used for extrapolating measurements of trace gas fluxes and factors regulating the production, consumption and exchange of trace gases in terrestrial and aquatic environments.
It provides a comprehensive summary of all aspects of scaling, from flux measurement techniques, geographic data, modelling, use of tracers and isotopes, inverse modelling and satellite-borne atmospheric observations. An interesting feature of the book is the fact that both fluxes from terrestrial and aquatic (marine) sources are discussed, along with the uncertainties in estimates of trace gas fluxes at different scales, including point, field, landscape, regional and global scale.
As well as reviewing the state of the art in the field of scaling of fluxes of greenhouse gases, ozone and aerosol and their precursors, and acidifying compounds, the emphasis of this volume is on identification of gaps in knowledge, finding solutions, and determination of future research directions.

Book Description
This volume details the application of molecular simulation to the liquid state. It is organised in a clear and logical way that first takes the reader through the underlying statistical mechanical theory necessary to understand the liquid state, especially those aspects that can be taken advantage of by simulation to help unravel the nature of the liquid state. It continues by covering the various modern variants of the Monte Carlo and Molecular dynamics techniques, for example, Gibbs ensemble MC and alternative ensemble MD. The effects of molecular architecture and chemical composition on the microscopic and macroscopic behaviour of liquids are also covered. The author has included chapters on surfaces, equations of state and phase equilibria, which emphasise new simulation techniques and conclusions made from the theories. Langmuir films, liquid crystals and the glassy state are also considered.
Book Description
Tristan Egolf's new novel is a book about the return of an old curse — the Kornwolf, a ferocious werewolf whose nocturnal rampaging becomes increasingly impossible to ignore. Kornwolf takes the reader for a good old-fashioned romp in the stubble — a journey through the slums and honky tundra of rural Pennsylvania, where nothing quite passes for good or bad, sublime or dismal, discrete or brash. And then the monotony breaks. Something — a freak of creation — is running amok in the fields. To solve the mystery, three generations of prodigal sons — a writer and hometown boy who swore he'd never come back to Penn's Woods; a middle-aged former pugilist who runs a decrepit boxing gym; and a misfit, mute, beaten-down Amish boy — are brought together by the light of a blue moon, in a town called Blue Ball. On one level this is a masterfully orchestrated, hilarious, and compelling take on the classic horror yarn, on another, Kornwolf is a social satire of suburban sprawl, closed minds, and all manners and varieties of self-satisfaction — Amish, civilian, or... other — in the best tradition of Tom Robbins and George Saunders.
Customer Reviews:
Note to Author: Don't die before finishing a great novel........2007-09-15
Legend has it that Tristan Egolf shut himself away in some Pennsyltucky shack to pound out this glorious hunk of potential. When he considered the draft finished, he ended his own life.
And, not to sound cold, this is why Kornwolf suffers. It feels unfinished, and the knowledge of suicide after completion leaves me feeling like I'm minding after his dumbfounded child. Ideas are half realized and fizzle out. Characters warp in and out of focus. The humor of earlier works is weakened here and overcome with too much spite. You always feel like you're going somewhere but never arrive. And the ending seems forced out at the last second.
This book desperately needed its author to stick around just a little longer to work with an editor and bring it up to "Lord of the Barnyard" and "Skirt and the Fiddle" status.
I really don't know whether to be mad or sad. It's an artifact of a writer rather than a piece of his literature. Kornwolf is like reading a Faulkner's or a Hemmingway's first drafts. You see the story peeking out at you, and you know there's greatness there. But it needs shape and definition.
But alas, in this case, it will never come. Ever.
A Vision of Lancaster County and Our Modern World.......2006-02-25
Nestled between New Holland and Narvon in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, lies Blue Ball, the heart of the Amish Basin. An abundance of legend has followed the less conspicuous inhabitants of the surrounding hills and valleys who managed to settle here from Switzerland in the early 1700s. Donning very plain eerie clothes and tightly bound by religious doctrine, the intentionally secluded Amish find themselves the Protestant cornerstone of the northeastern United States, if not the entire country. Within 300 miles of Blue Ball lives one third of the United States' population. The pressure to conform must be over whelming -but they hardly even know it. Their connection to the outside world comes from the magazines and newspapers the English drop off, as requested by road signs seeking a free farm utility. They have no televisions or computers. Current events are very simple: today's weather and the "good deals" at the local auction. They speak their own language, and generally avoid speaking with the English (us). This is one of the settings in the new novel, Kornwolf, by Tristan Egolf.
Kornwolf is an adventure into the shadow side of our country, Lancaster County, and ourselves. Tristan possesses a unique voice that places the reader into his world, (the protagonist) Owen's world. Tristan speaks our generation's disgust and disenchantment so well it makes me feel as if everyone in our generation must feel the same way... do you?
Funny, entertaining, fun.......2005-12-30
This book is great from the beginning, introducing characters and situations, gradually revealing more and more. It would be a disservice to any potential reader to touch upon any plot points, because the thrill of discovering them while reading the book is so great.
It is exciting and funny. There are loose ties at the end, and the last bit of the book seems to have been rushed a bit more than the rest. I wish the author had explored the aftermath of the last events. It would have added to the fun immensely.
If you're interested in either werewolves or in having a fun read, this is highly recommended.
I will definitely read Egolf's other two books.
