Book Description
Did you know that Sir Isaac Newton, inventor of calculus, and discoverer of the universal laws of gravity and thermodynamics ,was interested in astrology? Or that, in his day, the seventeenth century astronomer, Johannes Kepler, was more famous for the uncanny accuracy of his astrological predictions than for his three laws of planetary motion? Julius Caesar, Queen Elizabeth I, Napoleon, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Carl Jung...the list of greats who followed astrology is a very long one. Like you, those distinguished women and men sensed that the stars play an important role in shaping our characters and our destinies.
Astrology For Dummies is a fun, easy intro to astrology’s mysteries. Rae Orion, author of New Woman magazine’s monthly astrology column, offers a shortcut through the jargon and tells you how to:
- Understand how the planets affect you
- Figure out your horoscope
- Interpret sun signs, moon signs, rising signs, and more
- Know what your horoscope means for romance, work, and your future
- Apply astrology to everyday decisions
- Take advantage of astrology software and Web sites
Astrology goes much deeper than the sun signs covered in your daily paper, and Astrology For Dummies is your star chart for navigating its many depths, twists, and turns. You’ll explore the significance of the Sun, Moon, planets, rising sign, and the twelve houses. And in no time you’ll:
- Cast your birth chart and look up each sign in it by sign and house
- Unearth basic patterns that characterize your chart as a whole
- Analyze the geometrical relationships linking your planets
- Interpret with voids, empty houses, and other manifestations of zero
- Recognize how current planetary placements, or transits, influence your life
- Understand retrograde planets and why they’re not always bad
- Use astrology in everyday life and use the Moon to your utmost advantage
For millennia, people have used astrology to help them unlock the mysteries of their psyches, unleash their potentials, make the right matches, and even take an occasional peek into the future. Now let Astrology For Dummies show you how to make it work for you.
Customer Reviews:
Fairly complete.......2004-10-16
This book was much more complete than I ever expected. I use it as a reference on a regular basis. The information appears to be fairly accurate and fairly detailed. Lots of formulas to help the user calculate and draw their own charts.
Excellent overall introduction to astrology.......2004-04-12
This is a first class general introduction to all of real astrology. If you have heard or suspected that there is a great deal more to it than the newspaper columns, this book is a good place to begin finding out more. Rae Orion explains the basics and complexities of the birth chart (a proper horoscope is based on the exact time, date and place of birth) in a clear, straightforward manner.
In "The Cosmic Cookbook" section, Orion takes the reader through the basics of birth chart interpretation. Sun signs, Moon signs, the positions of all the planets in the various signs and houses e.g. Mars in Aquarius, Uranus in the sixth house and so on. Real life examples are scattered throughout the book. Other sections cover basic compatibility, both Sun sign combinations and more complex relationship astrology. Towards the end there is "Ten Types Of Astrology" (including Vedic and Chinese) and some more esoteric features of the horoscope are briefly covered in "Ten Ways To Complicate A Chart" (such as midpoints and Arabic parts).
An excellent starter. "Parkers Astrology" could be a colourful complement to this volume, and I recommend Stephen Arroyo's "Chart Interpretation Handbook" as a possible next step.
Ok for beginners.......2004-04-03
This was my first book on Astrology, and I must say it's definitely helpful in understanding some of the most confusing basic ideas behind the subject. The book goes into plenty of detail about what all the planets and houses mean and it teaches you how to read your own chart. I've already learned more from this book alone about my chart than I can even put together. However, I found the information about aspects a bit weak. The chart for figuring out the aspects of your chart didn't seem quite accurate (...), and the information about more aspects farther into the book was not easy to understand. I'd say if you want to learn more about aspects to find another book, but this is pretty good if you're just starting out!
Excellent and thorough.......2002-11-10
Don't write off this book because it's about astrology, and don't buy into the stereotype that believers are flaky. The author certainly doesn't fit this stereotype. This book is written seriously and intelligently. If you don't know anything about astrology and would like to learn as much as you can, this is the book for you. This book is very easy to understand and proves that astrology is uncannily accurate. Orion helps dispel skepticism (from close-minded people) regarding astrology by discussing the mathematical basis (referring to planetary alignment) for this ancient science. There is an entire section in the later pages of the book devoted to this mathematical aspect, and it gets quite complicated, though Orion breaks it down well. Even gifted mathematicians will have to spend some time here, but if you're devoted to it, you'll be pleased with the results. Keep in mind that you will need to know not only the date of your birth and your birthplace but your exact birth time, which is essential for an accurate reading. Give this book a chance, and you'll be awestruck with your newfound information and perspective.
Appropriate Title.......2001-03-15
Appropriate in that you'd have to be a dummy to believe in the validity of astrology. Time and time again the claims of astrology have been refuted. Yet, the popular press continues to pump out worthless tomes such as this one. When will the dumbing down of American society end?

Customer Reviews:
Best Book on the Rider Waite Deck.......2007-09-22
I have been working with the tarot for 40 years and was looking for a book to recommend to my students. So many books on the tarot are limited in scope,(focusing only on the major arcana or the minor arcana) or geared toward readings with one-line interpretations that are less than accurate.
The author has captured the essence of perennial philosophy and ancient mystical traditions (including kabbalah, numerology, astrology, colors, and mythic images) in an easy to read concise fashion to give you tools for unlimited exploration and personal growth.
Instead of 'quick fix' answers, this book teaches students to understand symbols and to discover personally meaningful answers that give a person not only guidance about one's life, but also award the reader with insights into one's inner strengths, in order to make good choices and deal with life in positive ways. I put this book on par with Angeles Arrien's The Tarot Handbook which is based on the Thoth Deck.
I tried to like this book...........2007-07-15
I really, really tried to. I just couldn't get into it. The author was kinda preachy for my taste. There was a lot of information on Qabala and mystery schools, which I didn't think went well with a book for begining tarot readers. She doesn't really believe or care that much about card reversals. Is this to save the space or was it too hard to explain to us "dummies"? I read the whole book, but it took forever because I couldn't get into it. I've read many other tarot books, and I would reccommend any of them over this one. If you feel you have to read it, please check it out of the library or borrow from someone else. I found very little useful information here, and all that I did find was available in better books.
Looking for a secular approach to tarot? DON'T buy this book.......2004-09-07
Another 1 star review of this book states the reason for the low rating is the fact that the book is focused on the psychological and clinical aspects of tarot. That review is exactly what prompted me to buy this book. As an atheist who is very interested in tarot from a psychological, therapeutic standpoint, the idea of a book that left out all the religious, wiccan, spiritual, magical, and other assorted hocus-pocus nonsense was just what I was looking for.
This book is NOT such a book, and I'm sure the author would encourage you to stay away from her book if you don't believe in fairies, witches and goblins. I encourage you to avoid this book if you're a secularist, or have a shred of rationality in your thinking. If you want to learn about magical societies, spiritual silliness, and just plain amazingly hysterical things like a globally shared consciousness, then go ahead and buy it. If you believe in Santa Claus, this might also be a great purchase for you. You could also pick it up if you want to laugh until your sides hurt at what some people believe. I sure did.
Four stars, only when viewed as an introduction........2004-03-01
If you already know some basics of Tarot or are interested on a more deeper occult level this book is not for you. But if you are a total DUMMIE on the subject, you should read it! You should also read it when you are interested in various kinds of tarot-decks wich are covered extensively in this book or have no basic idea about tarot interpretation. Be not deluded however to place tarot in such a microscopic level as Jayanti does. One should not forget that tarot is a philosophical machine wich can postulate metaphysical mechanics. This book has a somewhat "materialist" approach.

Amber Jayanti delivers again!
Authoress of the classic "Living the Tarot", when Amber writes a book on Tarot, we know to expect great things. In TFD, she not only lives up to our excited expectations but far exceeds them. You must see for yourself just how much information is packed in this book.
With her usual expert writing skill, Amber gives us a strong examination of a wide range of Tarot aspects, that will be useful to all levels of the reader's expertise. With sensitivity she maintains her gentle sense of fun and humor, giving her views in a non-threatening way that is especially valuable to her beginner readers. In giving concise, thorough explanations, this work becomes valuable to her intermediate and advanced readers.
It is truly no wonder and with much deserved credit, that Amber's books bring rave reviews, with use of such words as `compassionate', `knowledgeable', and `insightful'. Her work itself proclaims these attributes loud an clear. She will without doubt, be a historical figure in the Tarot World with such books as these.
In this work we are getting Amber's views which while influenced by her Qabalistic leanings, does not demand that her reader have such knowledge. There are 22 sections to this book... beginning with the Introduction we are started off with some `behind the scenes' thoughts. Making Friends with Tarot, covers pictures, archetypes, and making the Tarot personal. Who Uses the Tarot and Why, contains examples of how Tarot can be put to use. Let's Go Shopping, is a discussion on many of the popular decks and the choices available to you. History and Mystery, is a fascinating look at the historical aspects of Tarot. Mystery School Tradition, looks at what such groups are and are not, as well as what they teach or not.
A Magic Mirror, contains excellent advice and opinions on how to handle reversal cards. The 22 Major Arcana, describes each of these cards then asks pertinent matching questions. Strength, Death, and Moon have some of the best descriptions I've ever seen in print. Minor Arcana, shows different ordering choices for the suits and then the individual numbered cards of the suits. The 16 Court Cards, gives us different ways to view these cards, with examples and excellent thoughts to consider before then covering each card individually. I thought the Queen of Wands was especially good!
Experiencing the Tarot, covers finding your Soul and Personality Cards but also has an excellent article on linking cards to historical events. Handling Mixing Interpreting, is detailed thoughts for setting the proper `stage' of respect and spiritual mood, without the usual foolishness some people get into. More importantly in this section, Amber covers situations that a person may get from their client but are better left to the experts (for example a doctor) and proper questioning methods. Meditating With Tarot, gives various ideas on this useful practice as well as covers that interesting aspect of color usage. Tarot Spreads, is insightful and ethical guidance for when dealing with others. Be sure to check out Amber's own spread! Help Wanted, covers becoming a professional in realistic and legal manner.
Several important, related sub-topics are covered. Following are sections that are easy to comprehend, as Amber shows us how to connect Tarot to Qabala, Astrology, Numerology, and the philosophy of Alchemy.
We then have the Top 10 Tarot Misconceptions and The 10 Cards Most Likely To Cause A Freak-Out, which are both wonderfully covered with good choices of cards dealt with. I was especially impressed with Additional Resources, as this section is covered with a firm grip on the reality, that different people need different books and teachers. We then come to a comprehensive, complete, and most importantly accurate, Index.
Amber's strength is in not just handing out answers, but in making her reader think for themselves. She aids them to decide how they, as an individual, feel about each card. Emphasis is always on doing what feels right for the individual, rather than dictating some personal dogma as many writers do. You never get the impression of, "it's my way or the highway!" with Amber.
Now, what didn't I like? I read through this book twice and only found one thing that bothered me... page 76 on the Fool entry; Amber didn't cover the symbolism of the little dog. That's it. Otherwise, I can only repeat two words over and over-- "excellent! wonderful!"
Be sure to check out her book, "Principles of the Tarot" too.

The book covers Nostradamus's life and beliefs, his use of cryptic language and anagrams, interpretations of his work that link it to specific historical incidents, and critics who are skeptical of his prophecies. Book Description
Introducing the first, self-contained reference on acoustic waveform logging Acoustic measurements in boreholes were first made as a specialized logging technique in geological exploration, but recent advances have greatly expanded the potential applications of this technique. Acoustic Waves in Boreholes provides a thorough review of the theory and interpretation techniques needed to realize these applications, emphasizing the role of guided modes and critically refracted waves in determining the characteristics of recorded waveforms. Topics covered in this comprehensive volume include the seismic properties of rocks; propagation of axisymmetric waves along fluid-filled boreholes in isotropic rocks; and symmetric and nonsymmetric sources in isotropic, transversely isotropic, and porous, permeable formations in open and cased boreholes. Each chapter includes the theory of synthetic microseismogram computation, interpretation and data inversion techniques illustrated using computed seismograms, and case histories using experimental data. Appendices providing the mathematical formulation needed to compute microseismograms, with a single consistent notation used throughout, are also included in appropriate chapters. The wide range of geomechanical properties covered in this book will interest exploration geophysicists, reservoir engineers, civil engineers, geologists, and soil scientists.
Book Description
World-class science and technology developed in the Soviet Union during Stalin's dictatorial rule under conditions of political violence, lack of international contacts, and severe restrictions on the freedom of information. Stalin's Great Science: The Times and Adventures of Soviet Physicists is an invaluable book that investigates this paradoxical success by following the lives and work of Soviet scientists including Nobel Prize-winning physicists Kapitza, Landau, and others throughout the turmoil of wars, revolutions, and repression that characterized the first half of Russia's twentieth century.
The book examines how scientists operated within the Soviet political order, communicated with Stalinist politicians, built a new system of research institutions, and conducted groundbreaking research under extraordinary circumstances. Some of their novel scientific ideas and theories reflected the influence of Soviet ideology and worldview and have since become accepted universally as fundamental concepts of contemporary science. In the process of making sense of the achievements of Soviet science, the book dismantles standard assumptions about the interaction between science, politics, and ideology, as well as many dominant stereotypes mostly inherited from the Cold War about Soviet history in general. Science and technology were not only granted unprecedented importance in Soviet society, but they also exerted a crucial formative influence on the Soviet political system itself. Unlike most previous studies, Stalin's Great Science recognizes the status of science as an! essential element of the Soviet polity and explores the nature of a special relationship between experts (scientists and engineers) and communist politicians that enabled the initial rise of the Soviet state and its mature accomplishments, until the pact eroded in later years, undermining the communist regime from within.

Famous Writers School: A Novel
ASIN: 1582343756 |
Book Description
Part Great Gatsby, part This Is Spinal Tap, Steven Carter's hilarious debut paints a fictional portrait of a biographer, his notorious subject, and the illusions we hold about fame and fortune.
Howard Hughes embodied the American dream: envied by powerful men, desired by beautiful women, Hughes lived his life larger than all who surrounded him and yet died an emaciated recluse.
This makes him the perfect subject for red-hot biographer Alton Reece. Riding high on the wave of previous astonishing successes, Reece sees Hughes as more than simply a name worth the seven-figure advance he's demanding from his publisher. He finds in Hughes a kindred spirit of greatness, a man misunderstood and beaten down by jealous inferiors. But even as Reece struggles to "know" his subject, his own rapidly unraveling life keeps finding unexpected ways to intrude.
With a deft comic touch and an astounding narrative style, Steven Carter's novel creates a picture of a Hughes that might have been, a biographer that can't separate his subject from his own visions of grandeur, and a public that demands its heroes be larger than life-if only so they can be more easily torn down.
Customer Reviews:
Closer to a 3.5 ..........2005-01-10
is what I'd actually give this book. This book does not really follow the typical methods of storytelling. For starters, the narrator is a fictional biographer, but much of what the real author wrote is largely factual. In plain English it is a study in contraries. The book was relatively humorous and touching at times. Howard Hughes was an incredibly fascinating individual - the likes of which we will probably not see again in our lifetime. During my reading I kept thinking "Wow, this guy was nuts but I damn if I don't like him". I think that the author did a great job of making Hughes likable and most of all he really conveyed the magnetism that Hughes embodied. What I didn't like about this book was the narrator Mr. Reece. He was a pretty unlikable character. He came off as pompous and full of himself which I realize was supposed to be a comparison to Hughes but let's face it - Hughes is one individial who defied comparison. It's one thing to have an unlikable character and it's another to allow that character to have narrative rein. Reading this book was much like reading the diary of someone I did not like and having the content of the diary be about someone I did like. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this book. It is a better library read and for God's sake try not to read this before you have see the movie The Aviator which is out right now. I think that some of the magic that was Hughes may be lost to you at that point.
the time and space of howard hughes and his shadow.......2004-03-27
This book offers an intoxicating immersion into the world of Howard Hughes and his imaginary biographer, Alton Reece. As a former aerospace employee, I was highly interested in the details author Steven Carter wove into his tight, dazzling narrative. Anyone who has driven by the Westside and South Bay area of LA should realize what rich turf Hughes lived in, including the airplane factories that dotted and still grace the landscape (if you know where to drive). This book creates a small gem of a world that reflects the larger intellectual possibilities that Hughes once embodied, and sadly, lost along with his fiction biographer Reece.
Wow! Let's Laugh at Eccentric People!.......2003-10-25
Oh my gosh this book was so funny. I could not put it down. I had no idea who Howard Hughes was until I read this book. I laughed out loud so many times. It says right in front of the book that some of it is based on fact and other parts are made up - but it all felt so real and true. I believed every word because I don't know any better! I had a hard time separating it from a made up novel to a biography of an eccentric man's life - but wow what a womanizer he was. Another reason I liked this book is because it's off the wall - not mainstream. It's unique and entertaining!
So Good It Hurts.......2003-10-05
This is a unique work. It would have been easy for Carter to go for cheap laughs. He doesn't. He stands aside and lets the story run. Biographer Alton Reece is everywhere. Amazingly, we do not even sense the presence of Steven Carter. Most writers can't do that.
The scenes with Hughes' body double were among the funniest I have read in a lifetime of reading. The work is brilliantly understated. Cater has literally created a literary form unlike anything seen before. How wonderful! How rare!
Beneath the humor of this work is a deep sorrow. We are all Howard Hughes on one level or another. Every damn thing is insane and Carter knows it.
I Was Howard Hughes is the most original book since A Confederacy of Dunces. It is similar to Barth's The End of the Road. It's funny as hell but will also wring you out and throw you in bed for a week. I hope it gets the audience it deserves. Carter should win the Pulitzer Prize.
A Heartbreaking Work That Staggers Some Geniuses.......2003-10-01
Smart, eccentric, and by turns hilarious, Carter's first novel is more compelling and accomplished than at least ninety percent of the mouthy, self-referential, post-postmodern drivel that fills the pages of McSweeney's and passes for literary "art" these days. Melding fact and fiction into one cohesive story, Carter resurrects a number of American icons--Hughes, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, J. Edgar Hoover, Robert Kennedy, Jimmy Hoffa, Bugsy Seigel, to name a few--but without the hardboiled punchiness of James Ellroy or the mechanical syntax of Don DeLillo. In this extremely impressive debut, Carter weaves together a multiplicity of voices without missing a beat. Most impressive is Carter's ability to channel the quirkiness of both Hughes and his shady biographer without turning them into one-dimensional jokes. A timely release given the forthcoming Hughes biopic directed by Martin Scorsese. Read the book of one master storyteller (Carter, or should I say Alton Reece?), then watch the film of another!
