Book Description

The purpose of Beginner's Guide to SolidWorks 2006 is to help the user learn the basic concepts of SolidWorks and good solid modeling practices in an easy to follow guide. It is intended for the new SolidWorks user, users with experience in different CAD systems, or as a teaching aid in classroom training. At the end of this book, the user will have a good understanding of the SolidWorks interface and the most commonly used commands for part modeling, assembly and detailing by completing a project designing all the components, their 2D drawings and assembly drawings complete with Bill of Materials. The book is focused on the processes to complete the design of a part, instead of focusing on individual software commands or operations, which are generally simple enough to learn.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-02-12

"Beginner's Guide to SolidWorks 2006" is a good book. I already had a background in 2D drawing in both AutoCad and MicroStation. I purchased this book because SolidWorks is a different animal than the other two CAD packages and I didn't feel that I was getting the hang of 3D drawing on my own. In his book, Mr. Reyes takes the reader step by step through the process of "building" the Gear Box Assembly pictured on the cover of the book. By building this item one can learn most of the basic tools and processes needed to create other objects. I use SolidWorks at home to build my woodworking projects ahead of time on the computer and this book gave me the skills to accomplish that task. If there is one area I would criticize, it is that once a skill is covered in the book, the author assumes that the reader now knows how to do that task. In succeeding lessons, some of the previously learned tasks are expected of the reader and aren't always referenced as such. When I set the book down and then come back to it in a day or so, I didn't always remember where the previous skills were learned and had to thumb through the book to find them. This was a minor inconvenience and wasn't true of all skills. Some were referenced. Overall, I would highly suggest this book to someone who is struggling to learn SolidWorks.

2 out of 5 stars Not a book that I would buy again.......2006-08-29

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.... You can not believe everything you read. I am new to SolidWorks. I do have a CAD background. After attending a SW VAR class, I'm an advocate!

I needed a book that provided a clear, concise and simple methodology using SolidWorks. This is not the one. I'm surprise that someone at SolidWorks Corporation has not contacted the author. The book uses VERY similar if not the same models as are used in the SolidWorks online help guide.

The book reviews very, simple features; Extrude boss/base, Extrude Cut, Fillet and Mirror. It does not address anything in detail or supply the needed tools to create real world models. No configurations, design tables, SmartMates, Smart Fastners, 3D ContentCentral, needed features in engineering drawings, poor assembly techniques, etc. It does provide simple procedures to design a very simple part, but so does the SW online help guide. It even has the same mistakes which the SW online help guide has in their Design Library and Relations section. Check it out.... if you bought this book.

There are frequent mistakes in the illustrations of the Mate section. The illustrations in this book displays an edge with the icon feedback, and the selected entities in the Mate PropertyManager displays a face. This is not good for a beginner to be exposed to incorrect terminology or commands.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. NOT worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY book to buy for new Solidwork users!.......2006-08-16

I bought a half dozen books to learn Solidworks 2006 and make the move away from Autocad.

This book will have you working with Solidworks before you reach page 10.

Most other books spend the first couple of chapters discussing theories versus actually teaching a new user how to work with Solidworks. BORING!

Rather than blabbing about theories that typically will just confuse a newcomer, Alejandro dives right into fabricating parts with the RIGHT approach to ensure future part changes/modifications will be a breeze.

I was so impressed with the book that I actually called his company to say "GREAT JOB" and Alejandro took time out of his busy schedule to talk to me! Thanks!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK!

Book Description

Business incubators and the technology start-ups they funded enjoyed phenomenal success in the 1990s, only to see many of their bubbles burst at the turn of the millennium. Yet according to Silicon Valley insider Sally Richards, "Technology never rests and companies are undervalued right now. Fortunes are born out of this kind of market chaos." A confidante to the technology industry's premier powerbrokers, Richards brings you a first-person view of both sides of the negotiating table in Inside Business Incubators and Corporate Ventures.
Richards's exhaustive interviews of all the industry's pioneers, coupled with fascinating case studies of successful incubators, will introduce you to the prime sources of start-up capital as the technology industry contracts and expands. You will also learn where many of the strictly for-profit incubators went wrong and why many of the successful incubators today are those aligned with city or state governments, universities, or established corporations on a nonprofit basis.
Whether you are an executive looking to reposition or launch a new incubator, an entrepreneur trying to determine the best source of funding, or an individual investor who wants to know where to place your money now, Inside Business Incubators and Corporate Ventures will prove a gold mine of information on the past, present, and future of business incubation.
Foreword by James Robbins, Executive Director, Panasonic Concepts Center; CEO, Business Cluster Development; and Executive Director, Software Business Clusters

5 out of 5 stars A balanced and expert-informed approach to incubation.......2001-12-18

Sally Richards has tapped into a wide range of Silicon Valley experts-experts through their experience in either success or struggle-to provide a timely and balanced exploration of the opportunities available in incubation. I currently live in "the Valley," and it is refreshing to see an honest treatment of not only the challenges but also the opportunities that exist in developing start-up enterprises in a range of incubator and other venturing environments, rather than the over-reaction (both positive and negative) so common in many treatments of the business climate. I felt the contributions of Jim Robbins-one of the most experienced incubator founders in Silicon Valley-were especially valuable, both in his thoughtful introduction and as quoted in the main text. I found this text very helpful in understanding the "key learnings" from diverse experience in business incubation of various forms, and it should be helpful to others both inside and outside of Silicon Valley.

4 out of 5 stars A great reference for our troubled economic times.......2001-11-30

These days it's hard to find a source for sound financial advice. Richard's new book goes to the source - providing insider information and case studies - and offers a refreshingly honest look at the hits and misses in coporate ventures and business incubators.

        Book Description

Plant cell and tissue culture is a relevant area of experimental biology that has been developed for some decades to become an indispensable tool of plant biotechnology. Progress in this area, sometimes tumultuous, has been regularly recorded by the proceedings of the congresses of the International Association for Plant Tissue Culture which have been held every four years in several continents.
This book reports plenary lectures, keynote lectures and invited oral presentations given at the last congress held in Florence. It is a useful reference guide both for established scientists and students on both traditional and emerging fields of plant biology. The following topics are covered: In vitro Culture and Plant Regeneration; Plant Propagation; Haploids; Somatic Hybridisation; Reproductive Systems; Genetic Variability; Gene Transfer; Organelles; Biotechnology of Tropical and Subtropical Species; Agronomic Traits; Somatic Embryogenesis; Meristems; Cell Surface; Growth Regulators; Reception and Transduction of Signals; Gene Expression under Extreme Conditions; Primary Metabolism; Secondary Metabolism; Transport; Large Scale Production.

          Book Description

DNA replication is a key event in the cell cycle. Although our knowledge is far from complete and many elusive regulatory mechanisms still remain beyond our grasp, many enzymes and a multiplicity of biochemical mechanisms involved have been discovered. Recent findings in E. coli have confirmed and yet surpassed the original hypothesis of F. Jacob. In yeast and higher eucaryotes, the apparent redundancy in putative origins and initiators has made an estimation of the importance of each identified element difficult to access. In spite of well established methodologies - which are also described in the book - the origin identification in mammalian chromosomes is still a controversial subject. On the other hand, considerable advances have been made in our understanding of virus DNA replication and this continues to deepen and broaden our understanding of the controls of cellular DNA replication.

            Book Description

The Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde is a classic location to introduce beginners to field geology. The richness and variety of over 600 million years of history are packed into the tiny area. This book breaks the mold of "excursion guides" by teaching the basic skills needed by any beginner when dealing with rocks in situ. It presents a series of problem-solving exercises that include step-by-step instructions on what observations to make in order to find a solution. These increase in difficulty and cover the spectrum of field skills that a first or second year undergraduate needs to master. The exercises include many of the more interesting aspects of Arran's geological history and also introduce some of the fundamental concepts behind the science and the people responsible for them, such as James Hutton and Charles Lyell. This approach injects greater flexibility into teaching and assessing progress in learning. Above all, it shows that the subject is dynamic, thought provoking and fun.

              Book Description

This book presents a unified theory of rare event simulation and the variance reduction technique known as importance sampling from the point of view of the probabilistic theory of large deviations. This perspective allows us to view a vast assortment of simulation problems from a unified single perspective. It gives a great deal of insight into the fundamental nature of rare event simulation.

Until now, this area has a reputation among simulation practitioners of requiring a great deal of technical and probabilistic expertise. This text keeps the mathematical preliminaries to a minimum with the only prerequisite being a single large deviation theory result that is given and proved in the text. Large deviation theory is a burgeoning area of probability theory and many of the results in it can be applied to simulation problems. Rather than try to be as complete as possible in the exposition of all possible aspects of the available theory, the book concentrates on demonstrating the methodology and the principal ideas in a fairly simple setting.

The book contains over 50 figures and detailed simulation case studies covering a wide variety of application areas including statistics, telecommunications, and queueing systems.

James A. Bucklew holds the rank of Professor with appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of "Large Deviation Techniques in Decision, Simulation, and Estimation".

                5 out of 5 stars A guy's take on Relationships .......2006-11-03

I enjoyed this book immensely even though the character in it is vain, sexist and rude, a real guy's guy and a real guy's book. Harry, the main character, gets annoyed by everything in life and I mean everything. It's all very identifiable. There are so many poor guy books around these days but anyone who enjoys Nick Hornby / Steve Horsfall will love this.

                5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2006-06-29

If you read this book you must keep in mind that it was written by a man. I laughed all the way through this book and never expected anything too deep or romantic. Loved it.

                5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2005-07-30

This book is an absolute must read for guys. It's one of the finest novels I have read. The British humor cracked me up. Brilliant and masterful. Don't miss it.

1 out of 5 stars Drivel disguised as literature!.......2004-09-21

It is seldom that I find a book so badly written that I feel compelled to scan the pages for storyline after only 11 pages. The man comes across as gay but pretending to be an piggish straight man. The story drags its feet trying to find humor in a multitude of little descriptions. I found the first chapter, sad. The second mind numbing. I must confess to having a love for ladlit, and have just finished Mike Gayle's dinner for two, which was not a great book, but by comparison was a classic. I am one of those people that can read ANY book, if a book appears slow or poor I will still plod along just to prove that the publisher had some reason for publishing the book. In this case I couldn't find the courage to get past page 50. There are too many good books out there, and my life is too short to waste on this.

5 out of 5 stars Barrowcliffe is a master of the male confessional........2004-05-27

Women do not like this book. In fact, they don't seem to understand this AUTHOR at all. Barrowcliffe is a master of the male confessional, and the women who have reviewed his writing obviously have difficulty facing up to the honesty that Barrowcliffe laces into the descriptions and dialogs within his books. It is unfortunate, but true, that men are inclined toward a cycle of self destruction and are constantly the cause of their own undoing.

The narrator of this book lives true to that premise and much of the book centers around the search for the right woman, the intricacies of courting, and the Mallory principle which has been the destruction (and justification) of so many men.

Women don't want this to be the way men work, but Barrowcliffe's painful honesty when dealing with his subject matter is what makes this book truly stand out....Sorry ladies.
