Book Description
Due to the release of two major textbooks in child and adolescent psychiatry in the last three years, Dr. Hendren felt the findings from these books, particularly in biologic psychiatry, should be included in his new edition of this book. For this revised and updated second edition, Dr. Hendren has reviewed every question, answer, and explanation to ensure coverage of the major advances in the classification of child and adolescent disorders represented in the DSM-IV. Some questions not only reflect this move into biologic psychiatry but also into managed care in the field.
Customer Reviews:
actually helped a lot!.......2004-01-03
I just took the child board exam and this question-and-answer book actually helped a lot. The exam takes three days: half of one for the written exam, a 75 minute preschool/school age oral exam, and a 60 minute live adolescent oral exam. This book helps the most with the written exam. The questions are similar to the type on the real exam. Hendren provides questions in either multiple choice or K-type format, with some matching questions. These are followed by answers and brief explanations. The explanations are usually helpful, but there are some that are confusing or skimpy. I actually got frustrated with a few of them. The material is a little dated (little on atypicals and a lot on tricyclics). But overall you will learn a lot and be in full "question mode" during the exam. There are a couple sections at the end of the book to help prepare for the oral exams. The preschool/school age one is more pertinent, because there is a written vignette on the actual exam. Overall, this book is well worth the investment!

Book Description
Zero Gravity quickly became one of the defining books during an unprecedented period in entrepreneurship. But, the world it described and helped shape changed dramatically in the spring of 2000. Now, noted Internet stock analyst Steve Harmon provides an even more penetrating look into the quicksilver world of Internet venture capital and its lasting role in the world enterprise economy.
Version 2.0, revised in concept and content like a major new software update, confidently capitalizes on the best of the old and the new. It features insightful analysis of the 1999-2000 dot-com correction, which affected the portfolios, psychology, expectations, and metrics of venture capitalists. Harmon looks at emerging trends from the vantage point of an entrepreneur. He also shares his perspective on the prospects for obtaining early-stage money over the next several years, now that the first Internet wave has crested.
Version 2.0 also includes new sections on Web incubators, long-term trends, and other recent dotcom developments, plus updated statistics, tables, and resources. And Harmon offers a thought-provoking analysis of the dark underbelly of e-commerce: backlashes by copyright holders and regulators to some Internet business models, new roadblocks in broadband data capacity, and more.
Zero Gravity is written from an insider's point of view. It's packed with insights from top Internet venture capitalists and entrepreneurs, features a new foreword by Ann Winblad, and is the perfect plug-in to the world of e-commerce start-ups.
Customer Reviews:
What a disappointment.......2004-04-21
This book is pure rubbish. Even worse than the first Zero Gravity book (I should have learned my lesson). If what you want is mindless anecdotes, shameless name dropping, and little substance, this is the book for you. For shame.
Thumbs Up!.......2001-12-15
I just purchased a copy of Harmon's book Zero Gravity 2.0.
I am new to the investment arena and found this book extremely useful. In fact, I have already acquired backing for my venture.
My hat is off to you Mr. Steve Harmon...
A true superstar in a pool of sharks.......2001-07-19
Steve Harmon's reputation as one of the brightest stars in the stock world is well deserved. Steve has a gift for uncovering real value in this Internet age. I follow Steve's Broadband Report and my portfolio is up 220%.I rate Steve's new book with five stars because it's even better than his first...and I learned volumes from that book. I always say, the proof is in the pudding and I happen to be enjoying a rather large bowl thanks to Steve Harmon.
Worth reading.......2001-06-28
Steve has presented an in depth look at the venture capital world in this release of Zero Gravity 2. I appreciate his no-nonsense approach and his willingness to expose what goes on behind the scenes. Very good insights!
Right on the Mark!.......2001-06-21
Steve Harmon knows how to get to the heart of the matter. This book has given me very helpful insights and has helped me make sense of the recent investment arena.

Description:
The use of agrochemicals, such as mineral fertilizers and herbicides in agricultural systems, may affect the potential of soils to act as a sink for methane. Typically, the effect of each agrochemical on soil methane oxidation is investigated separately whereas in the field these agrochemicals are used together to form one comprehensive land management system. Here we report the results of field experiments that assessed the combined effect of multiple fertilizer and herbicide (nicosulfuron, dimethenamide and atrazine) applications on the soil methanotrophic community. Soils treated with organic fertilizer had three times higher methane oxidation rates compared to soils receiving mineral fertilizers. These higher oxidation rates were positively reflected in a significantly enhanced abundance of methanotrophs for the organic fertilized soils. In contrast, herbicide application did not alter significantly the soil methane oxidation rate or the methane-oxidizing population abundance. Subsequently, the methanotrophic community structure was analyzed with group-specific DGGE of 16S rRNA genes. Cluster analysis of the methanotrophic patterns clearly separated the mineral from organically fertilized soils. Less pronounced clustering differentiated between chemical and manual weed control. Furthermore, cluster analysis of the methanotrophic community revealed that soil type was the primary determinant of the community structure. Our results indicate that fertilizer type had the greatest influence on methane oxidizer activity and abundance. Soil type had the most pronounced effect on the microbial community structure.

Description:
Effects of the fungicide carbendazim and of the insecticide lambda-cyhalothrin on soil invertebrates and litter decomposition under tropical conditions were assessed in ecotoxicological semi-field studies using intact soil-core terrestrial model ecosystems (TMEs) and in a field test applying the litter-bag method. In the TME study, performed indoors under controlled conditions, earthworms, isopods and diplopods were added to intact soil cores and mortality of soil invertebrates and mass loss of leaf litter were assessed. The field study was performed on an abandoned rubber plantation near Manaus (Amazonia, Brazil). The measurement endpoints were abundance of the soil fauna and mass loss of leaf litter. In the TMEs carbendazim caused a decrease in the abundance of the introduced earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus and, partly, of the milliped Trigoniulus corallinus. In the field carbendazim decreased the abundance of the native earthworm Andiorrhinus amazonius. Lambda-cyhalothrin was toxic to isopods and millipedes in the TMEs, whereas no effect on arthropods was detected in the field. Organic matter breakdown measured as mass loss of leaf litter in TMEs over time revealed that the two tested agrochemicals can have an impact on decomposition at field relevant concentrations. In the field the results were less obvious, due to spatial heterogeneity through which possible effects of the tested agrochemicals could have been masked.

Book Description
Branching morphogenesis, the creation of branched structures in the body, is a key feature of animal and plant development. This book brings together, for the first time, expert researchers working on a variety of branching systems to present a state-of-the-art view of the mechanisms that control branching morphogenesis. Systems considered range from single cells, to blood vessel and drainage duct systems to entire body plans, and approaches range from observation through experiment to detailed biophysical modelling. The result is an integrated overview of branching.
Book Description
Groundwater is an increasingly important resource to human populations around the world, and the study and protection of groundwater is an essential part of hydrogeology - the subset of hydrology that concentrates on the subsurface. Environmental isotopes, naturally occurring nuclides in water and solutes, have become fundamental tools for tracing the recharge, history, and contamination of groundwater.
Customer Reviews:
Good text for advanced undergraduate/graduate students.......2005-03-04
I read this book for a Stable Isotope Geochemistry class as an undergraduate at UC-Davis and found it moderately understandable. My background is in ecology and as a grad student now I am using stable isotopes to answer ecological questions. I still refer to this text and even compare some of my values to values used in the text. It is well-indexed and easy to find specific subjects. Though the writing is fairly dry, there are plenty of graphs and diagrams that are very informative and display the trends and concepts satisfactorily. I wonder though if some of the data they use is a outdated. They often cite work from 1970's and earlier and I don't know if there might have been some changes in methodology and increases in applications. This book is heavily biased on freshwater systems and I would like to see a new edition with a chapter on marine applications/problems/things to consider etc. All in all I would recommend it to advanced undergraduates and higher in geology, geography, ecology, environmental sciences and those wishing to learn about isotope fractionation and its uses in science generally.
The very good book in the field of isotope hydrogeology!.......2000-08-11
This is one of the best textbooks I have ever read. The book regards the light, stable isotopes so called in hydrogeology - "environmental isotopes". The authors present the occurrence of the environmental isotopes, physical and chemical processes affecting the variations of isotopic composition of different types of waters in understandable, logical manner - starting from the hydrological cycle, from evaporation and water vapor through precipitation and fresh water to groundwaters, mixtures and brines. I think that Fritz's and Clark's book is very usefull especially for those starting the research with the isotopes in waters because such complex processes like the isotope fractionation and the mechanisms of isotope exchange are explained clearly and effectively. Although the big part of the book, what is also important to me, regards the interpretation of isotopic data, possibilities of using them to the evaluation of a water quality, identifying and dating both the modern and the old groundwaters. I refere this book either for those starting the work with stable isotopes in waters or for those having many years practice in that field. In my opinion it is not only the very good textbook but also the very well organized compendium of useful scientific information.

Book Description
The third in the delightful "Provincial Lady" series finds our pungently witty English lady travelling the United States. Her two earlier books were set in Devonshire and London respectively, where she set down her observations of life and letters as they affected her and her menage of husband, two children and assorted servants, friends and acquaintances.
In this volume she comes to America on a literary tour. She visits New York, Cleveland, Chicago and the World's Fair of 1932, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, among other cities-confiding to her diary as she goes her shrewd and barbed thoughts and queries. Here is no British What's-Wrong-with-America, but rather a delightful See-Yourselves-as-the-Others-See-You: a challenge to the American sense of humor.
Readers of Diary of a Provincial Lady and The Provincial Lady in London will be further amused and charmed by their favorite diarist's trans-Atlantic adventures.
Customer Reviews:
Provincial Lady spreads her wings.......2003-11-05
Our lucky Provincial Lady has had a book published (when did she find the time to write it in between dealing with servants, bills and children?) so is off to America to do a book tour. This book contains many characters from the original Provincial Lady Diary, as well as some new ones, as the Provincial Lady shares her views of American hospitality (wonderful, if cocktail laden), travelling (not at night if possible), American food (under-rated and vastly superior to English food) and other important details.
Though now over 60 years old, this is still a fantastically good book, both funny and insightful. A word of warning - a lot of it may not make much sense if you have not read Diary of a Provincial Lady, as it refers to many characters that you are already assumed to know, but if you are up on the series, you are sure to find this one a delight!
The Trials Of A Provincial Lady.......2002-03-16
Elisabeth just longs for the time and space to write something other than laundry lists and read anything other than household accounts. It is apparent that the earnings from her writing and speaking tours are the only thing keeping the wolf or the bailiff from the door. Robert her husband is not supportive, preferring to see these things as a distraction from the real business of the day which in his view should be ensuring that meals are on time and plentiful, the children to be seen but not heard, no animals in the house and absolutely no conversation at breakfast. And if possible no visitors, and particularly not ones who stay. In this attitude he is rather like many men that one knows.
She is constrained on all sides by the demands of the unspeakable Lady Box who happens to be her husband's employer, the state of her overdraft, local difficulties with the servants, the house, the laundry, the women's institute. In other words she is of another time and place, on the cusp of the second world war when everything is beginning to change. Many things for the better, others with less happy outcomes.
Through all the vissitudes that life throws at her Elisabeth copes as best as she can, seeing the humour to be had and best of all allowing the reader to join in. Women juggling with work, husband and family is as current today as it was then and I must conclude that little changes. Still women are left fixing up dental appointments, taking the dog to the vet, the kids to the doctor, booking the baby-sitter, arranging visits to and from relations, and of course endless boring household shopping.
It doesn't matter that this was written 50 years ago, it is still fresh and very funny.
EM Delafield endured much sadness before she died, her only son was killed in a questionable shooting accident in the gunroom and she died of cancer a few years later in her early fifties. Her prolific output stands as a testament to her.
