In her introduction to Collaborative Web Development: Strategies and Best Practices for Web Teams, author Jessica Burdman quotes industry leaders as saying, "Web development is crazy." Throughout the remainder of the book, Burdman breaks the process of Web development down to manageable chunks and offers techniques to help you successfully complete Web projects without pulling your hair out.

This isn't a book about development tools or programming languages--it's a user manual to the process of managing site development from conception to completion. The focus is on team development since almost all such projects of any scale involve a diverse collection of professionals. Brief interviews with seasoned team leaders add real-world perspective to the topic.

Burdman provides frameworks for analyzing both the project at hand and the team you have at your disposal. She tackles the process with a discussion of getting the project off the ground in an organized and complete manner. The material here is presented in plain English instead of with the usual heavy emphasis on flowcharts and management theory. She also doesn't stop with the summary of a single project cycle but covers client issues, team communication, and ongoing team cultivation as well. This book may not make all your projects go smoothly, but it will sure help. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Project scope definition, cost budgeting, team assembly, content planning, team and client communication, client education, quality assurance and testing, team evolution, and case studies.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Project Management is Good Project Management.......2006-03-29

Hmm. It was interesting to read the review before this one, after reading Jessica's book. My impression of this book is that it was clearly written by someone who has been in the trenches, and managed the trenches, of both typical and demanding web-based projects over the years. Yeah, there are some references to early work and specific tools, but in general good project management is good project management. And this book outlines an approach for project management, team communication and complexity wrangling that I think is clear and pragmatic. Great book. Happy to add it to my library. I'll invariably return to it for ideas in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Very outdated.......2006-02-25

I think Collaborative Web Development was ahead of its time when it was written in 1999, but today it reads more like a relic. It also doesn't help that the writing style is rudimentary (Ms. Burdman should've considered using a ghost writer) and the book is littered with typos.

Maybe the book could be useful to people who have absolutely no experience in working with companies that have a web site, but there's got to be better stuff out there.

I would NOT recommend Collaborative Web Development for anyone who has any bit of experience in project managing for the web.

1 out of 5 stars This book really doesn't tell you much of anything........2003-07-22

Maybe this book had some good information in it during the early 90's when all of this stuff was new but now this book doesn't offer anything to anyone. All of the technical stuff is very old and the focus is on very simple stuff like HTML page directories and images while, the team structure chapters are conflicting seem to be written by someone who doesn't really understand the development process, and the project scenarios have little to no value.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all Web Project Managers.......2002-03-12

I am a senior Web project manager and I am also doing my master degree in Web project management. This book is by far better than the others. The author follow a good methodology and give helpful and easy examples, she's very grounded. Recommended for junior as well as senior PM. (sorry for my poor English, I speak French!).

3 out of 5 stars good introductory treatment.......2002-03-09

Three stars is generous, but I couldn't in good conscience give it fewer. The content is good-quality, but is very "shallow." Geared exclusively toward web project teams, I expected to see some new collaborative techniques, or new spins on accepted methodology. What I got (while good) was only a very basic introduction to proper project management methodology. If you are part of, or lead, a web team, and have no experience in formal methodology, grab a copy of this book. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

      Book Description

Learning about the cruise line industry is interesting and fun with Cruising. It is written in breezy, magazine-style prose with learning activities that challenge what the reader has learned. A number of reinforcement strategies make the content more easily understood and more likely to be retained. For example, key terms and phrases are in boldface or italicized type, photos, graphs, and sidebars expand each chapter's content, and questions concerning the content encourage contemplation and discussion. The author has ensured that the content reflects a true insider's look at cruise sales, marketing, and operations by having dozens of leading industry professionals, including several cruise line presidents, review its content. The substantial material in this publication is complemented by comprehensive profiles of nearly two dozen cruise lines and is supported by the approval of the Cruise Lines International Association.

      Book Description

"The Executive's Guide to Controlling Health Care and Disability Costs is much more than a standard guide to cost containment techniques. Rather, it brings together the achievements of leading organizations, the most current research, and a strategic vision incorporating quality and value imperatives, continuous learning and improvement, and information-driven action commitments. The authors show the opportunity for improvement is great regardless of the direction of change in state and national public policies." —Mary Jane England, MD President Washington Business Group on Health "A groundbreaking book offering both innovative strategies and concrete solutions for employers. A must for any executive interested in regaining control over health and disability costs." —William D. Hager President and Chief Executive Officer National Council on Compensation Insurance "This book integrates the key ingredients for successful control of health care and workers' compensation costs: active, hands-on management by the employer, attention to the human beings involved, an effective organizational culture, and the same care and attention as given to quality." —Douglas F. Stevenson Executive Director National Council of Self-Insurers "The Executive's Guide to Controlling Health Care and Disability Costs injects a much needed dash of optimism into a pessimistic broth. We all need to be reminded that there are things we can do to manage this problem and that waiting for Washington to solve it is simply not enough." —John W. Rowe President and Chief Executive Officer New England Electric System "Management of their own employee health plan ranks among the most significant challenges facing the 1990s executive. The authors explain managed care and outline all the critical associated issues in an uncommonly insightful, nonjargonistic manner. The chapter on the new importance of health care information systems is essential reading." —Brian S. Gould, MD Senior Vice President United Health Care Corporation

Despite the insurance industry's tendency to tout integrated disability and medical management plans, there remains a dearth of available information to guide the interested business manager through the process. The Executive's Guide to Controlling Health Care and Disability Costs: Strategy-Based Solutions provides an excellent overview and in-depth treatment of why companies should pursue an integrated approach toward disability and health care management, and how exactly they should do it

                    Book Description

Mitochondria are complex organelles, possessing a double-membrane and even their own genome, the mtDNA. They play a pivotal role in cellular metabolism, respiration, and production of ATP essential for the normal function of all human organ systems. It is not surprising, therefore, that genetic defects of mitochondrial functions cause a wide spectrum of human diseases. This book provides the first modern and truly comprehensive coverage of the biochemistry, genetics, and pathology of mitochondria in different organisms. It particularly focuses on the recent advances in our understanding of basic mitochondrial research to the consequences of dysfunction at the molecular level.

The 13 contributions written by leading researchers in the field include topics such as: mitochondrial genome evolution and mtDNA stability, mitochondrial biogenesis and protein quality control, mitochondrial morphology, assembly and function of the mitochondrial energy generation apparatus and mitochondrial metabolic pathways. These are particularly oriented to link in these various mitochondrial pathways to the clinical consequences of their dysfunctions.

                      Book Description

This book is dedicated to basic physical principles of the propagation of
acoustic and elastic waves. It consists of two volumes. The first volume
includes 8 chapters and extended Appendices explaining mathematical aspects
of discussed problems. The first chapter is devoted to Newton's laws, which,
along with Hooke's law, govern the behavior of acoustic and elastic waves.
Basic concepts of mechanics are used in deriving equations which describe
wave phenomena. The second and third chapters deal with free and forced
vibrations as well as wave propagation in one dimension along the system of
elementary masses and springs which emulates the simplest elastic medium.
In addition, shear waves propagation along a finite and infinite
                      string are discussed.

In chapter 4 the system of equations describing compressional waves is derived.
The concepts of the density of the energy carried by waves, the energy flux, and
the Poynting vector are introduced. Chapter 5 is dedicated to propagation of
spherical, cylindrical, and plane waves in homogeneous media, both in time and
frequency domains. Chapter 6 deals with interference and diffraction. The
treatment is based on Helmholtz and Kirchhoff formulae. The detailed discussion
of Fresnel's and Huygens's principles is presented. In Chapter 7 the effects of interference of waves with close wave numbers and frequencies are considered. Concepts such as the wave group, the group velocity, and
the stationary phase important for understanding propagation of dispersive waves are introduced.
The final chapter of the first volume is devoted to the principles of
                      geometrical acoustics in inhomogeneous media.

                        Book Description

There are more than ten thousand particle accelerators in the world from the linear accelerators used for cancer therapy in modern hospitals to the giant 'atom-smashers' at international particle physics laboratories used to unlock the secrets of creation. Many scientists and engineers spend their lives designing, constructing, and operating these machines - yet few universities include the subject of particle accelerators in their curricula. The few courses that do exist and the summer schools run by the big accelerator laboratories lack a simple introduction which covers the essentials of the subject for the many who need to learn how these machines work. This book fills that gap and takes the reader through each of the aspects of a modern accelerator giving enough information to unlock the door to the subject but does not overload the understanding with mathematics. Anyone with a general interest in modern technology based on a fascinating variety of physics and engineering will find much of interest in this book.

Very specialised book. Written mostly for engineers involved in designing accelerators, and graduate students in physics who might have experiments at an accelerator.

No abstruse theory here. A book for experimentalists. Wilson describes clearly the differences between cyclotrons and linear accelerators and synchrotrons. The advantages and disadvantages of each. With real life examples, like those at CERN (of course), and at SLAC and Fermilab.

It does seem that the baton is passing from the US in this field. The European scientists have somehow managed to keep their funding together, which Wilson praises. He undoubtedly help bring this about. Certainly, an impression from this book is that if you are starting out in experimental particle physics, you might do best to direct your efforts at CERN.

                          Book Description

A concise, balanced overview of the most important topics in experimental particle physics of the past forty years is presented in this comprehensive study. Beginning with a review of particle physics and electromagnetic and nuclear interactions, the book continues with a discussion of three nearly universal aspects of particle physics experiments: beams, targets and fast electrons. The second part of the text details the properties of various types of particle detectors, such as scintillation and Cerenkov counters, proportional and drift chambers, sampling calorimeters, and special detectors. The last chapter demonstrates how the various aspects of the previous chapters can be integrated in an experimental system. There are numerous references to the research literature, in addition to examples and workable problems.

4 out of 5 stars Essential reading for High Energy Physics Experimentalists.......2003-01-08

Although this book is somewhat dated and badly in need of a new edition, it still contains essential material for those in experimental high energy physics. I know of no other single book which covers HEP detectors in more depth. Many of the principles in this book apply also to newer detectors not covered and this is critical background reading for new grad students in the field.

My only complaint: the book is now printed digitally and looks it. Some of the pages were almost unreadable and the cover looks like it was done on your laser printer. I'm used to better quality from Cambridge Press.

                          3 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2000-06-13

This book is more of an advanced level reading for graduate students pursuing careers in particle physics. The basic content is refreshing and I am glad that the explanation of accelerated particles was established early in the book, which gave meat to he later context. Overall, I give this book a three-star, because many theories were repeated throughout the book, which got a little annoying.

                            Book Description

The complex technology of particle accelerators is based upon a series of often rather simple physical concepts. This comprehensive introduction to the subject focuses on providing a deep physical understanding of these key ideas. The book surveys the many aspects of accelerator physics and not only explains how accelerators work, but also why the underlying physics leads to a particular choice of design or technique, and points out the limitations of the technology. The clear and thorough mathematical treatment always emphasizes the physical principles described by the equations, and includes a range of calculations which develop a genuine feeling for the quantities and concepts involved.

I bought this book upon a lot of advices of my friends who attended Internetional Physics Olympiads.I'm coaching Olympiads Preparation students in my school. They had some difficulties in measuring, calculating the errors and evaluating their results. The book showed a lot of ways to prevent it. Statistical approach to datas in evaluating errors is invaluable for some experiments, esp radioactive decay experiments. Also the representation of errors in graphs is helpful to students in expressing their experiments result since the evaluations are the most important part of the experiments and errors are indispensable part of it.Now my clidren are more confident and they are more promising.

                              Book Description

It is not uncommon to find engineers in test labs or design groups who have not had occasion to use the mathematical tools acquired in college. When suddenly faced with vibration issues they find themselves ill equipped to get a solid grasp of the vibration process. It is the intent of this technical reference to provide access to vibration theory, initially at a very elementary level, then progressing from basic analytical formulations toward the more mature mathematical representations associated with eigenvectors and the Fourier Transform. Mode shapes are introduced without any reference to the eigenvalue problem, but connected immediately to simple coordinate transformations in two and three dimensions. This allows a rather simple picture of operators, ultimately leading to a straight forward derivation of the Frequency Response Function (FRF) formula. It is hoped that many engineers will find their way back into a more analytical approach to vibration problems. Experienced analysts and academics were given consideration as well, providing fresh viewpoints from time to time, such as the development of modal force as a contravariant vector, providing a detailed view of the FRF as a superposition of modal FRFs.

Modern-day presidential candidates are subjected to unprecedented scrutiny, and Uncle John is right there alongside other zealous investigators digging up the most compelling, confounding, entertaining, and unique information, facts, and figures about our nation's chief executives. This book is full of interesting insights, amazing anecdotes, and trashy tidbits about the lives, times, and issues of each president. Topics include: The Men — Their Personalities, Performance, Virtues, and Vices; Presidential Firsts and Lasts; Sibling Rivalry — Presidential Brothers and Sisters in the News; Health Secrets of the Chief Executives; Close Calls — Assassination Attempts; The Presidency as Depicted in Books, Movies, the Media, and Monuments; and much more. Readers learn about the oldest sitting president (Reagan at 77); the tiniest president (5'4" James Madison, who weighed less than 100 pounds); and the special status of 1841 (the only year when three separate men all served as president).

We own this entire series (or at least the ones I can get my hands on) and love them. My son will not enter the bathroom without one in hand. We are a homeschooling family, so I take learning anywhere I can get it.
