5 out of 5 stars Geary Rocks on JSP! Excellent author.......2006-04-23

I have seen David Geary speak and have read his writing many times and there is no one I know that makes JSP more interesting or more understandable. Core JSTL: Mastering the JSP Standard Tag Library is easily the best book on the subject I have read, or used in practice, or recommended to others. It is clear, concise, and logical. Trust me on this one... you will be a fan of Geary and his books after reading this one.

5 out of 5 stars J2EE Guy.......2005-03-16

One of the best books i found on JSTL. Provides in-depth knowledge & extensive examples of JSTL.
This book helps us to understand why, where and how to use JSTL tags. follows the typical MVC pattern [ a clear separation of View from Model]
Though, I am not a great fan of SQL, XML tags, the Core & I18N JSTL tags are not only valuable but also easy to use. Now we could have non-Java programmers to design all of your JSP pages.
[our last project leveraged JSTL/ Struts/ Tiles frameworks]

5 out of 5 stars Reliable book from a reliable author.......2003-11-24

Clear, concise. solid coverage of a core technology for web development in java. This book is at the same time a useful reference and an easy tutorial. Covers the EL scripting language, base, iteration, xml, sql, networking actions.
Complete, easy to read and with working example code for EVERY concept. D.Geary and M Hall are the reference authors in the
Servlet-JSP World. If you are doing any kind of development using JSP you need this book. 'nuff said.

I was new to JSTL with some JSP/Servlet experiences.
This is all I need to get started with JSTL.
Lots of example codes to help me understand.
I was particulary interested in I18N and Formatting sections and this book covers every area of JSTL including these sections fairy well. (Lots of books tend to cover very lightly on i18n sections)

I highly recommend this book! This is my JSTL reference book. I also looked at other JSLT books, but I think this is the best by far.

4 out of 5 stars Take the Next Step with Java Server Pages.......2003-03-20

Last year I built a website that used Java Server Pages to dynamically generate most of the pages. It worked well, but was very kludgy. JSPs invariably mix the HTML display code with some of the internal data logic. Through a judicious use of the
Model-View-Controller paradigm, I was able to reduce this mixing. But a minimal amount was still inevitable. This is a common experience with JSPs. You end up with files containing java code and HTML. Ugly and brittle. Plus, it calls upon two areas of expertise. A separation of the two would be much more
robust, and allow people with skills in only one of these areas to still contribute to the development.

In answer to this, Sun has been refining its Standard Tag Library. Specifically, it now has an expression language that is a programming language in its own right and is comprehensively described in this book, which bears Sun's official impramateur. Programmers versed in other languages can quickly absorb this. Thru it, you can easily write code to access Java Beans and other java programs. Plenty of clear examples are provided.

Of interest to several will be how to use STL to hook up to back end SQL databases; transferring from them into webpages and transmitting user changes back into the databases.

The author also covers the important case of interacting with XML, which is now a de facto standard for data interchange. Nor does he neglect describing issues of internationalisation. Practical for those who have to support several languages.

The sum of all these is to make this book very useful for those of you needing to build JSPs in business applications. I do wish I had this book last year!

Server-Side Development Is Easier Than You Think

Not so long ago, anyone who knew HTML, even casually, was considered to have a special skill. Now, if you don't at least dabble in server-side web development, you're already behind. Fortunately, Mastering JSP is a great way to build the skills you need today. Inside, you'll learn to design and develop a wide range of JSP-based web applications, beginning with a basic, dynamically generated website. From there you'll build apps that read from and write to databases, create your own custom tags, and process and present XML. Throughout, you're helped by detailed, completely illuminated examples.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-04-25

When I first got this book and just thumbed through it, it seemed like it was going to be a good book. However, the more I actually read the chapters, the more I find it utterly lacking in content. The author does not explain things very much if at all. Many places, its just pages of source code listings with little or no comments and no explanations. Then when you get to the end of one source code listing, basically the only commentary is "and here's the next listing..". This annoying lack of explanations also carries through to the appendix, where a "JSP and Servlett API Reference" is included - problem is, its nothing but a commentless, explanationless dump of the member function prototypes. Fortunately, I bought this book used for $10. If I had paid the new price for it I would really be upset and would return it. That's my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Using JSP with Javabeans and EJBs.......2004-01-26

I wanted to find a book that covered both the use of JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans in an easy-to-understand way. I have made a comprehensive search, and came up with this book. The book covered all I wanted it to, and still there are lots more. If you just have read tutorials on the internet (like I have), and want a book for assistance, BUY IT! Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good JSP Book.......2003-06-19

I was looking for writing database based web applications in JSP and I found the book very useful. It is a step-by-step guide for building web applications. The book covers JavaBeans , Handling exceptions in efficient manner, Custom Tags and Displaying XML files using JSP. The book has got detailed explained examples which helped me in designing my application faster. Overall I was able to design and develop web apps in an efficent manner with the help of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to usual Mastering Series standards.......2003-02-19

Unfortunately, this book is too much 'how I would re-invent JSP' and not enough about how to use JSP. For example, the JSP and Servlet API Reference is just a dump of the the Sun interface without any comments. I tried to get information about the Request object and was very frustrated, since this is scattered throughout the book (I think, the index was not helpfull). I'm sure this has some good code in it, but I didn't buy it to have a code snippets book. I wanted a book that would teach me JSP and be a good reference as I develop code.

3 out of 5 stars Mastering JSP Tags?.......2003-02-09

This book does cover a lot of ground. You will probably learn about JSP custom tags and tag libraries if you can get through all the typos and errors in the example code. I think this book does a good job of covering the mechanics of JSP Tags. I don't think it covers the design aspects of using tags very well. I would have rated it higher if someone had bothered to proofread this book.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2003-02-04

Finally, I was able to find a tags book that made since. I loved everything about the text. It covered the process of creating tags from the ground up, including excellant coverage of a tags life. Great Job.

2 out of 5 stars JSTL coverage premature.......2002-05-31

This book's coverage of JSTL is not useful. JSTL was not yet released when this book was published, so it covers a premature beta version that isn't useful to learn.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful !!!.......2002-05-11

There're over 100 typos !!!!!!!!
I cannot show the typos here becuase there're many many many mistakes. I don't know why other reviewers don't mention it.
Maybe It's a disadvantage of the author so that Amazon doesn't let the review show up.

I totally don't recommend to buy this book.
You can buy this book after you manster taglibs with other books. :)

5 out of 5 stars Great coverage of Taglibs and JSTL.......2002-05-02

This book packs a lot into 400 pages, and is the most cutting-edge tags book I've seen. It uses a custom-built contact manager (all the code included) to demonstrate how the various components of a Java web app work together and how to deploy it using Tomcat. The app uses both MySQL and Access as its database, which should satisfy most readers. The illustrations explaining the servlet life cycle were excellent!

The book gives a thorough introduction to the various types of tags (simple, tags with bodies, cooperating, etc) and how they are used. Lots of practical code examples here. The illustrations in this part of the book very clearly explained the how custom tag components work together.

The Jakarta Taglibs coverage is very good, it is not exhaustive, but that's not bad since some of those tags should never see the light of day. I thought the author did a great job of picking the useful ones, explaining them, and providing code to demonstrate how they are used in combination. The coverage of the new Java standard tags is great, too. It includes info on the new expression language and how to change the language your tags use. Again, lots of good code to demonstrate usage.

Coverage of database concepts and tags was particularly good throughout this book. My only suggestion is to include even more code to demonstrate complex uses of the tags, but this would have made the book longer I suppose, and I do like that it is concise and easy to reference.

          Book Description

It is now more than fifty years since the United Nations system and the Bretton Woods institutions were created. The world has changed since then, and so have its governance needs in terms of institutions and rules. It is time to think about the contours of institutions and governance that would meet the needs of the world economy, and also polity, at least for the first quarter of the twenty-first century. This book is among the first to examine the subject in depth. The study is divided into four parts. The first situates the subject in the wider context of globalization which has shaped development in the world economy, affected the living conditions of people, and constrained the role of nation states. The international context and the national setting are explored. The second part analyses some issues of emerging significance in the contemporary world, such as global macroeconomic management, transnational corporations, international capital flows, and cross-border movements of people, to suggest that there are some missing institutions which are needed. The third part provides a critical evaluation of the existing institutions, in retrospect, with a focus on the UN, the IMF, the World Bank, and the WTO. It analyses how existing rules need to be modified or existing institutions need to be restructured to meet the present and future needs of global governance. The fourth part explores some important elements of governance which are critical for any vision of the future. It suggests some changes in existing institutions and points to emerging governance needs where new institutions may have to be created. This authoritative volume will be of value to readers with an interest in international economics, development economics, and international relations. It will also be of value to practitioners, both policy-makers and diplomats, concerned with problems of global governance, and should become the standard reference on the subject.

                  Book Description

Genetic research in some fundamental crops, together with the use of chemicals as pesticides and fertilizers, opened the way in the 1950s and 1960s to great changes in methodology in agriculture - with astonishing results in the tropics. This change became known as the Green Revolution - a truly great revolution in methods and materials which, when applied with intelligence, made possible in a few years the achievement of complete sufficiency in cereals production in South and South East Asia, Mexico and South America. After 20 years of continuous success, aspects of the Green Revolution need to be rediscussed in the light of new findings and possibilities offered by scientific and technological progress - and negative side effects on environment and health.

These papers examine the present state of agriculture, and indicate the way forward for its development, especially in the tropics and, in particular, Africa and South America. The need

                    Book Description

This book is the first major synthesis of theory and empirical knowledge regarding the ecology and epidemiology of infectious diseases in natural, unmanaged, animal and plant populations. Throughout the book, the contributors develop a dialogue between the patterns observed in empirical studies of disease in natural populations and the mathematical models used to dissect and examine the observed epidemiological patterns. The book is divided into a number of reviews and group reports by experts in various fields. Two sections synthesize important issues relating to the dynamics of microparasites and macroparasites, while the others discuss spatial patterns in disease dynamics and the evolutionary biology of parasites, pathogens and their hosts. This book will be of use to graduate students and specialists in mathematical biology and epidemiology.

                            Book Description

This book deals with the computational analysis of thin-walled structures such as aircraft, ships, and containment vessels. Building on the author's earlier book Static and Dynamic Analysis of Structures, it shows how to use computational methods to tackle some of the fundamental problems of structural mechanics, with particular emphasis on nonlinear phenomena. Where the earlier book dealt with linear systems, the central theme running through this volume is the notion that unstable equilibria are associated with motions and large displacements and therefore require a full nonlinear analysis. The discussion begins with an overview of the basic mechanics of deformable bodies, including variational formulations, and then considers the large deflection behavior of shell and frame structures using a finite-element analysis. The second part of the book begins with a summary of linear vibrations of structures, including an introduction to modal analysis; it continues with computational formulations of nonlinear dynamic analyses of structures and refines the concept of dynamic equilibrium in the context of large deflections. The book concludes with a discussion of stability, including the difficult problem of stability of motions in the large. By describing the methods on which commercial software pakckages are based, this book allows an engineer to evaluate the results these computations produce. It therefore should be useful to practicing engineers and graduate students.

                              Book Description

The work deals with a systematic theoretical and problem-oriented treatment of fundamental topics in the wide area of error-controlled adaptive finite element methods for analyzing engineering structures with elastic and inelastic material behavior applied to engineering structures. Different types of error estimators are presented from both mathematical and engineering points of views: global estimators and goal-oriented estimators based on duality techniques, controlling h-, p-, and hp-adaptivity.

Special features are: combined model and discretization adaptivity for thin-walled structures, hierarchic modeling in elasticity and related hp-adaptivity, error estimators of constitutive equations, adequate mesh refinement techniques and error-controlled adaptive elastic-plastic analysis of contact problems.

The benefits are seen in new methods and results of leading researches in the field which provide deeper insight into recent developments of a posteriori error analysis and adaptivity.

                                  Book Description

Stability of NonLinear Shells is a compilation of the author's work on analyzing the behaviour of spherical caps and related shell structures under various (axisymmetric) load systems. Differing from other texts on shells of revolution, it is one of the first attempts to deal with effects of multi-parameter load systems. This extension leads to the discovery of some new, hitherto unknown phenomena exhibited by these structures. In addition, the book presents a novel way to characterize properties of solutions of the governing equations for spherical caps - a classification anchored in a theory called reciprocal systems. The author has introduced a deformation map, a projection of multi-dimensional solutions to two-dimensional graphs, to enable analysts to gain insight into the physical meaning of the results obtained.

Numerous examples illustrate the concepts introduced. This book also comes to grips with many misconceptions existing in engineering literature about the question of the stability of solutions.

                                          Book Description

The hilarious sequel to Rick Reilly’s beloved bestselling golf novel Missing Links

Life is going pretty well for Raymond “Stick” Hart. He’s happily married to the former Ponkaquogue Municipal Golf Club assistant pro, the beauteous Cajun firecracker Dannie, raising his rambunctious son, Charlie, and getting by writing smart-mouthed greeting cards for fifty bucks a pop. Best of all, nothing has changed at Ponky, the worst golf course in America. You still have to hook it past the toxic waste dump on No. 1 and under the billboard on No. 8, the fried-egg sandwiches are terrible but cheap, and his pal Two Down is always up for a sucker bet.

Then, one disaster of a day, Stick’s world does a ten-car pile-up. The cheapskate bastard owner of Ponky announces he’s retiring to a nudist camp in Florida and selling the club to the Mayflower Club next door, a bastion of blue-blood snobbery that plans to pave Ponky over. Worse, its membership includes Stick’s hated father.

                                          Who promptly drops dead.

Just before Stick’s pal Two Down loses $12,000 to a golf hustler who turns out to be funded by the Russian mob.

Which is about the same time that Hoover, Ponky’s worst golfer and the owner of an impressive array of useless golf gadgets purchased with his wife’s money, learns she’ll cut him off if he doesn’t break a hundred in one month.

Then a practical joke makes Dannie believe that Stick’s been stepping out with the gorgeous new clubhouse girl, the eye-popping Kelly, and he’s soon living on the forty-year-old couch in the Ponky clubhouse.

Luckily, Stick has a solution to all his problems.

He’ll qualify for the British Open.

                                          3 out of 5 stars A "Missing Links" Sequel that's missing..........2007-09-23

Shanks for Nothing follows the author's fantastic comedy "The Missing Links." While Missing Links was terrific, this book was a tired sequel. Material felt "warmed over" from the prior book. The story was amusing in many parts and moved along nicely. I also found it a little far fetched in some areas (sneaking on plane by distracting board gate attendant). If you are a golfer and looking to kill a few hours and don't want to stretch your mind and get a few kicks, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Funny Golf Book.......2007-08-23

A really fun and funny book, especially if you're a golfer/golf fan. Reilly is very witty, and his books are page turners.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, for a sequel........2007-07-11

"Shanks For Nothing" is the sequel to "Missing Links," which follows the trials and tribulations of a former touring pro turned greeting card writer. The hijinks begin when Stick learns that he will only get an inheritance if he qualifies for the British Open, and he needs the money to buy Ponky, the public course where he and his buddies make a home away from home. Aside from the really unfathomable sequence where Stick and a friend sneak onto a flight from Boston to the UK for the qualifying event, the story is enjoyable and moves right along. (I have a minor issue with completely unreasonable events unless I'm reading a true fantasy story, and sneaking on a plane after 9/11 qualifies.)

In general, the plot twists are easy enough to swallow, and the ending, while a bit trite, wraps up the story as well as any happy ending could. Overall, it's a pleasant diversion and a worthy companion to "Missing Links."

You'll like this sequel. Its laugh out loud funny and I read it in a few nights. Rilley's sense of humor reminds me of Bill Simmons', which I'm sure he gets a lot. Anyway, pick this up for an easy, summer read.

3 out of 5 stars Double Bogey effort.......2007-06-07

As much as I liked Missing Links and almost all of Reilly's books, this one was disappointing. The characters are great but they need to be updated with new material. MKissing Links was a great read that this sequel does not do justice. Funny in spots but mostly contriveed. I think Rick missed on this one...
