Book Description

Building WebLogic Portals shows the beginning portal developer how to develop a portal application from start-to-finish and supplies the intermediate developer with proven strategies and development tactics for creating an enterprise portal. It also provides the advanced Java application server developer with a full range of reference material.
Building WebLogic Portals also goes beyond portal development. The Web services chapter shows how to use Web services that allow companies to integrate business processes and data with their suppliers and customers. The authors describe the architecture of a well-planned user interface and include everything from data binding strategies to document-view architecture with MDI. They also show how to create elegant custom controls tailored to specific data and application logic and how to create dynamic user interfaces, dockable windows, and a vector-based drawing program. The book also teaches the GDI+ essentials needed for good user interfaces such as hit testing, irregularly shaped forms, owner-drawn menus, and animated controls, and shows how to integrate "intelligence" into user interfaces with embedded help and user agents.

Creating Web Portals with BEA WebLogic shows the beginning portal developer how to develop a portal application from start to finish and supplies the intermediate developer with proven strategies and development tactics for creating an enterprise portal. It also provides the advanced Java application server developer with a full range of reference material.

Creating Web Portals with BEA WebLogic goes far beyond basic portal development. The "Using Content" chapter describes how to incorporate static content into portals by use of the BEA Content Manager and also describes the process of integrating third-party content management systems. The authors describe inter-portlet navigation and input processing using Webflow and Pipeline Components, as well as the standard Front Controller strategy. They also demonstrate how to add value to a portal by using the Personalization and Campaign services, allowing each portal user to have a tailored experience. This book teaches the use of EJBs, the BEA logging mechanism as well as best practices, skills needed in creating a robust, maintainable enterprise application.

1 out of 5 stars Useless for 8.1.......2006-09-22

There is no way to use this book if your using workshop 8.1 and build a portaling applications. NOTHING APPLIES. Do not buy this book!!!

1 out of 5 stars Obsolete- only covers up to 7.0.......2004-06-04

Don't expect this to help much if you are planning to use the current version 8.1, as things have changed a great deal from 7.0 (and SP3 about to be released changes the content mgmt functions entirely).

1 out of 5 stars Stick with online documentation.......2004-02-21

This book is very light on explanation, unless you need explanation on filling in blanks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2004-02-12

I'm a very senior person drawing a high salary but my skills have become outdated lately. I had to ask myself why my company should pay 90 - 100k for me when they could get the same thing for 40-50k. In short, I'd become 'sloppy'. Although my company continues to pay an annual bonus and has not yet reduced benefits, they are- afterall- running a business here and have to be conservative. So I decided to step up and meet expectations.
I recently acquired this book and have found it extremely useful! This is the direction the industry is going. Not very many companies out there are doing this stuff. I would rate myself a beginner with J2EE technologies, but a mere 20 minutes into the book, I was able to follow the thorough, well documented examples and create a fully functional portal. The authors clearly demonstrate it doesn't have to be a rocket ship.
I found this book to be a very easy read, clearly, concisely written with an appropriate touch of humor here and there. Most computer books are so dry and boring. The point is- how useful is that if you can't even stay awake reading it? Am I right or am I right? I found the prose here refreshing and resplendent. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out with J2EE development, is tired of having to write the same old Java code over and over again and would like to leverage the power and flexibility of the WebLogic Portal 7.0. This book provides thorough, accurate examples of how to master this latest technology! High five to the authors!

1 out of 5 stars Piece Of Costly Crap!.......2003-11-09

Totally Useless. I will return this book in Borders within less than 12 hours of buying. Positively. Wonder why it took three authors to write this crap. Half an author is more than enough.

      Book Description

This book examines contemporary and perennial constitutional issues in civil liberties and rights by posing questions designed to engage readers in an exploration of how and why U.S. Supreme Court Justices have interpreted the provisions of the U.S. Constitution relating to Freedom of Expression and Religion, and Equal Protection and Privacy. Each question is followed by an essay “answer” that explores, in a thought-provoking manner, the variety of ways these issues have been responded to in real cases. Chapter titles include: In Defense of Liberty; The First Amendment and Freedom of Expression; Freedom of Religion; Equality Under the Constitution; Privacy and Reproductive Freedom; Contemporary Issue of Equality and Freedom; and What is the Future of Constitutional Rights and Liberties in America? For Americans interested in the changing circumstances shaping our future, and the U.S. Supreme Court's reaction to them.

            Book Description

AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, Volumes I and II, combines cases, decisions, and authorial commentary to maximize your learning and understanding in this course. These comprehensive volumes cover the entire range of topics in constitutional law. Each of the chapters includes an extended essay providing the legal, historical, political, and cultural contexts for the set of edited decisions from the United States Supreme Court case that follows. In selecting, editing, and updating the materials, the authors emphasize recent trends in major areas of constitutional interpretation. At the same time, the authors include many landmark decisions, some of which retain importance as precedents while others illustrate the transient nature of constitutional interpretation. Because the book provides a good balance of decisions and authorial commentary, this text appeals to instructors of law as well as instructors of political science.

              Book Description

This textbook presents a detailed critical analysis of the legal protection of civil liberties in Britain. It sets out to cover the main topics generally dealt with on civil liberties courses in an accessible manner while providing detailed examination of areas of particular academic interest.

This book considers the theoretical background against which to measure the protection of civil liberties in practice and it examines the influence of the European Convention on Human Rights and the deficiencies of the traditional constitutional arrangements. It also covers freedom of expression including freedom of information and assembly, and it evaluates the extent to which privacy interests receive protection in UK law. The book also examines freedom of the person with particular emphasis on the changing nature of safeguards for suspects in police custody, and considers anti-discrimination measures and equal treatment for individuals under the present law.

This is more a long essay than a book, but it's an essay that you'll never forget. Sidney Hook was an educator by training, and this book offers an education in freedom, liberty, and the human condition in general.

It's important to note, though, that this is a book written in a certain time. Sidney Hook was a leading anti-communist, and that perspective is clear throughout the book. With the fall of the Berlin wall, some of his writing may seem a bit old-fashioned, it's still relevant to our time.

4 out of 5 stars Serious scholarship on American judiciary........2002-01-14

As a lover of American law and a 'court-watcher', this title hooked me in immediately. Trying to find the balance between maximum democracy and learned aristocracy has always been a struggle so the main thesis should come as no suprise. Our constitution has rough edges. What is suprising is Hook's diagnosis.

The first thing Hook does is to lambaste those who believe in absolute rights. The first and fifth amendment have clashed. The first amendment can even clash against itself and when these happen, one right must yield to the other. The bill of rights offers us no roadmap in how to decide this so Mr. Hook reaches for the first available solution- that of utilitarianism. I've always been skeptical of 'The greatest good for the greatest number. All others get screwed.' but sometimes it is unavoidable. Hook still seems too eager to use this 'quick-fix' to resolve the issue.

Next, he goes on to textualism in the constitution. Like it or not, there is no text that conveys with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY what it's author meant. Our constitution comes close. 'Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion,' seems pretty clear on the surface but what constitutes a religion, is it a pre-existing establishment congress may not respect or simply their own establishment, and does this imply that congress may offer 'respect' to many religions thereby avoiding the problem by not showing preference to only one? Whew! Difficult stuff. At some point (godels proof), we have to rely on someone's interpretation. Who better than the supreme court? Here, the only skepticism I have is Hook's use of the 'Bork Method' of trying to figure out what the founders- He uses Jefferson and Madison- meant by quoting their personal letters. I know that Hook realizes there was more than two people's intentions, but you'd never think it.
The point of disagreement I have with Mr. Hook is on judicial review. He's right, it's not authorized by the constitution, merely implied. But there are two extremes. One is congress as the final arbiter of which laws are constitutional an which aren't, or the courts could do it. Mr. Hook seems to trust the congress more than the courts. He does not recognize that the danger in democracy is that the people are generally short-sighted and are not likely to read the constitution closely (how many of your friends can name the first ten amendments?). The congress, being, through elections, directly accountable to the people, may not do what is in the best interest of the constitution if it will not help them get re-elected. With the supreme court there is not this difficulty, but another. They are not at all accountable to the people having been appointed for life. The only check on them is that they can only rule on cases brought to them (they must adhere to jurisdiction) but I'd rather the justices (who'se job it is to read the constitution) be safeguarding congress than congress do it themselves. We can either trust Scalia and Ginsburg or Helmes and Daschale. The choice is obvious. The tentative compromise- You'll have to read the book to find out- Hook offers is brilliant so in a round-about way, I agree with him again.

For such an exacting subject, the author must be excused for a little pedantry. This is difficult stuff, but the book is short and if you're into American law and judiciary, you'll not be able to put this one down!!

                    Book Description

Textbook on Civil Liberties and Human Rights is primarily aimed at students studying civil liberties and human rights in the context of a law degree, but it will be of interest to anyone who is concerned with the extent of our freedoms. This new third edition has been completely rewritten to take account of the Human Rights Act 1998, which came into force on 2 October 2000. All the main freedoms, including freedom of the person, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and freedom from discrimination are discussed. Each chapter starts with a consideration of the impact of the Act on the area, including discussion of the relevant case law under the European Convention on Human Rights. The influence of Europe is shown in many areas through the inclusion of relevant case law from both the domestic courts and the European Court of Human Rights. Cases include Redmond-Bate v DPP (1999) and Steel v UK (1999) on breach of the peace; R v Argent (1997) and Condron v UK (2000) on the right to silence; R v Chalkley (1998) and Khan v UK (2000) on s.78 of PACE. Other case law discussed includes Attorney General v Blake (1998) on breach of confidence; DPP v Jones (1999) on demonstrations; the Pinochet case (1999) on extradition; and Reynolds v Times Newspapers(1999) on defamation. Book Description

Permian and Triassic are the interval known for the integration and separation of Pangea, the closure of the Palaeotethys and the opening of Mesotethys. They were associated with a series of worldwide events including the Late Palaeozoic glaciation and succeeding extensive evaporatic and reef formations, the end-Palaeozoic regression, strong orogenies and widespread volcanism and magmatism, and finally, the Permo-Triassic biotic macro-extinction. These events resulted in the formation of enormous reserves of coal, petroleum, evaporites, phosphorites and metal resources. The Permian and Triassic thus constitutes a time interval particularly important both for understanding the Earth's history and for exploration of mineral resources.

The book aims to reconstruct the Permian-Triassic history of Pangea, Palaeo-Tethys and Palaeo-Pacific through stratigraphic, palaeogeographic and other interdisciplinary approaches. It consists of two parts. Part 1 deals with regional stratigraphy of Tethyan and western Circum-Pacific countries which is the basis for interregional correlation, and palaeogeography. Part 2 deals with the biotic evolution at the Permian-Triassic transition, focusing on the major invertebrate groups: foraminifers, radiolarians, brachiopods, ammonoids and conodonts.

I was expecting an essay-type book when I ordered this, the author uses humor to keep your interest while successfully explaining rather boring topics. I easily read this book in two hours without getting tired of it and retained most of what I'd read. This book tells you all you need to know about writing except what you should write about! I was impressed, it's not a very long book, but is packed full of good information.

                              5 out of 5 stars Writer's bookshelf classic.......2007-09-23

James N Frey's book is already one of the classics and a damn good addition to any writer's bookshelf. He covers the whole process even though the book may seem too short to do so: The pace is fast, humorous and gritty from the first (characters, who they are and how to build them, by far the best starting point) all the way to the last(The Zen of Novel Writing, a ten page summary of the 'writers life'). I thought the second chapter (Three Greatest Rules of Dramatic Writing: Conflict! Conflict! Conflict! the most useful. Points are illustrated with examples from authors one knows and can relate to. A single objection: In an example (for 'Point of View', p. 100 in my copy) a single action revolver is fired by pulling the trigger over and over again (should be 'double' action). A great book and to me, worthwhile.

This is a damn good book about creating tight, well-constructed stories that stand a chance of selling. The discussion on Homo Fictus, advice on proving your premise, and many other gems are all worth buying this book to read. If you have only one book to guide your first steps into novel-writing then this is the one. I've read dozens but this book was the most fun, easiest to digest, and easiest to put into practice. Top banana!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-08-09

After reading the reviews before I bought this book, I actually decided to start off reading The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri, which Frey references a lot in How to Write a Damn Good Novel. It definitely helped, so I would recommend reading that first. This novel was excellent. It was easy to read and understand, and has tons of great writing tips. I would certainly recommend this book for beginners. Don't forget to take out your pencil and highlighters!

4 out of 5 stars IT IS A "DAMN" GOOD BOOK.......2007-08-08

I think this book presents much information to writers. We can all benefit from Frey's opinions on characterization and storytelling. I picked up some pointers on dialogue. You don't have to be a beginner to learn from it. As a person struggling to write my first novel, I am feeling more inspired since reading it and wish more people would do the same.

A gift? Yes-a gift for you. You're welcome.—from the introduction by Daniel Handler

Nonsense Novels sends up the silliest conventions of the ghost story, the detective story, the rags-to-riches story, the adventure story, the shipwreck story, and, of course, the story itself. Among other things. Here the close cultivation of cliché yields a bumper crop of absurdity and the utterly ludicrous turns up at every new twist of the tale.

This is a satirical masterpiece. Stephen Leacock was a genius.

I intend, he announced, "to try a bold, a daring experiment, which, if it succeeds, will bring us into immediate connection with the world of spirits. My plan is to leave two sovereigns here upon the edge of the table during the night. If they are gone in the morning, I shall know that Q has contrived to de-astralise himself, and has taken the sovereigns. The only question is, do you happen to have two sovereigns? I myself, unfortunately, have nothing but small change about me."

4 out of 5 stars Some sense in Nonsense.......2006-01-06

Wit is often not associated with the academe. Therefore it is a suprise to see such wit in Stephen Leacock. As a professor of Economics at McGill University in the mid 20th century, Leacock was counted among Canada's greatest humorists.
In the Nonsense Novels, Leacocks unleashes parodies of most literary genres: The Great Detective, the first tale, satirizes Arthur Conan Doyle's Scandal in Bohemia.
There are tales of capers involving gullible women, a desert island landing with an alternate ending, analysis of societal conditions, and some stories that are plain nonsense.
A Hero in Homespun and the Man in Asbetoes are two worth reading; the latter being a farcical exposition on the future of capitalism and scientific advancement - very scary, if it were not so funny.

I was introduced to Leacock while browsing gutenberg.org, and have not been disappointed.
If you feel overwhelmed by the importance attached to triviality today, then you might do well to pick up and read the Nonsense Novels.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Humor from 90 Years Ago-- Still Funny & Relevant.......2005-09-22

Leacock is one of a handful of literary parodists and humorists (Perelman, Benchley, Twain) whose parodies, though more or less a century old, are still laugh-out-loud funny. If you're a Sherlock Holmes fan, Leacock's "Maddened by Mystery: or, The Defective Detective" will make you chortle. If you appreciate romance novels, "Gertrude The Governess" will still tickle. Canadian Leacock was a master humorist with a light touch, and an unerring deflator of cliche and presumption. This collection of short pieces will still entertain the sophisticated fan of written humor, and should be in every collection.

Where do I begin to describe the absolutely astonishing quality of Leacock's work? I first heard of Stephen Leacock when reading a book about the Marx brothers. It seems Groucho was on a train, and happened to pass the room of Jack Benny (who was traveling with them, working on the same vaudeville circuit. Groucho heard Benny screaming with laughter, and popped his head into Benny's room to see what the commotion was. Benny told Groucho that it was a book by Leacock, whom Groucho admitted to not knowing. Benny told Groucho, "It's the funniest stuff I've ever read!" Groucho later bought a copy of the book, loved it as much as Benny, and said that he always looked for anything written by Stephen Leacock.

Okay, but what about his stories? Leacock's stock in trade was the parody of classic literature - stories about humble girls of (unknowingly) noble ancestry, who are engaged to work as servants for title lords, only to fall in love with the son of the mansion are turned into hysterically funny romps, where the lies not in the intentionally funny line, but in carefully crafted twists of standard sentence construction.

A sample, from the above-described story, called "Gertrude the Governess; or Simply Seventeen":

"Young Ronald said nothing; he flung himself from the house, flung himself upon his horse, and rode madly off in all directions."

Leacock treats the classic tale of knighthood (handsome, strong knight declares his love for the gentle maiden of the castle, and she loves him too, though they've never met) to similarly wicked entanglement of story and prose.

"Sorrows of a Super Soul" tells the classic Russian tale of an unrequited love, while "Carolyn's Christmas" the story of the old farmer, his family away (one son in the city, another in prison), his farm mortgaged, and a strange girl happening upon the family on Christmas Eve, with a baby, but no wedding ring. Both of these, and all other stories in this slim book, will have you laughing until you cry.

Buy a copy, get hooked. If Groucho and Jack Benny thought this was the best humor ever, how can it not satisfy you too?

                              Book Description

An anthology of comics by one of the all-time great illustrators in American history.

This is the first extensive reprinting of stories by the celebrated American illustrator A.B. Frost (1851-1928). Although recognized as one of America's greatest illustrators and painters, he was also a pioneer of the comic strip and a major influence of Winsor McCay (Little Nemo in Slumberland), Fredrick Opper (Happy Hooligan), and many other cartoonists.

Stuff and Nonsense collects the three albums of sequential graphic stories (comics) he published in his lifetime. The book includes a variety of stories that highlight Frost's extraordinary skill at caricature and slapstick humor. "Carlo," for example, is a long tale chronicling the exaggerated devastation that ensues when a bunch of country ragamuffins tie tin cans to the tail of a dog named Carlo. "Deacon Smith Takes a Short Cut Across the Hardguy Golf Links" is the funniest golf sketch since W.C. Field's Golf Specialist. It is remarkable, in fact, how Frost's humor anticipated cinematic slapstick: his work is the graphic equivalent of Arbuckle, Keaton, Chaplin, and Lloyd. Much of the work is "silent," allowing the pictures to do the heavy lifting with its broad, histrionic strokes, but Stuff and Nonsense also contains over 60 illustrated limericks in the vein of the great Edward Lear, making the book uniquely suited to children as well as adults.

Frost is perhaps best known for the illustrations he provided for Joel Chandler Harris's Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit books, but over a career of more than 50 years he created innumerable drawings and paintings for such authors as Theodore Roosevelt and magazines such as Harper's Weekly, Scribner's, and Life. He was known for the utterly convincing detail of his illustrations. The poet Robert Frost was a distant cousin.

Fantagraphics have done a wonderful job assembling the 1884 edition of STUFF AND NONSENSE in a new and beautifully produced edition...but I have a few quibbles with this volume.

Firstly, this book is NOT the complete STUFF AND NONSENSE of A. B. Frost. Frost printed a second edition in 1888 where he redrew quite a few pages and added some more limericks and illustrations; some were added to replace racist Irish caricatures, but Frost took the opportunity to rework or restage some of the earlier drawings and make them more animated, or in some cases changed the stories completely. There is a completely different ending to THE BALLOONISTS in the 1888 edition (and it is much better than the earlier version.) It would have been great if we could have compared the two versions in the new edition since they reflect Frost's maturation as an artist in the intervening four years.

And while I am delighted to see THE BULL CALF reprinted, I note that Fantagraphics have simply taken the Dover Books edition from 1975 and blown up the images. It would have been better if they had gotten one generation closer to the originals and used a period copy.

Perhaps the alternate 'takes' of Frost drawings can be included in a future edition. This is a must have for any animator or illustration historian.

A.B. Frost's Stuff And Nonsense provide an intriguing anthology of one of the first to produce 'comics'. Born in 1851, he became a regular short story contributor to Harper's Weekly and other publications, spicing his works with cartoons and illlustrations. Stuff And Nonsense's French/English survey of his life and productions includes paintings as well as caricatures and cartoons, and is 'the' bible of information and art from Frost.

In this fascinating study, Holbrook draws on Carroll's own letters, as well as the work of 20th-century psychoanalysts, to step inside Alice's looking glass and examine what the books reveal about the author's own desires and conflicts and his relationships with those around him. The result is a warm, highly sympathetic, and convincing portrait of C. H. Dodgson, a.k.a. Lewis Carroll, as the author applies his well-known psychobiographical analysis to the symbolism contained in Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, The Wasp in the Wig, and Jabberwocky. Included are four photographs taken by Carroll himself and two Carroll drawings.
