I picked up this book to read on an airplane. The book should help brand managers understand technology better.

I'm not a techie. But I do understand the basics of IT. I found the book so simple that its ridiculous. The cover and intro seemed appealing. Reading more I find the book empty. This is mostly a book of e-this and e-that and nothing tied together.

The value add is zero. The author makes his money in royalties. The reader gets nothing but rambling nonsense. So many books in this pace, why did I stumble on this one? Dont make the same mistake.

Hogwarts for the enterprise.......2003-12-11

As great as the Harry Potter books are, you wouldn't base a business on the theory of Hogwarts.

This book is a silly e-HogWarts-like fantasy that leads one to believe software is a land of wishin' and hopin' and where simple minded split em up into lil' boxes mentality makes big problems easy.

Even in today's world of web services and OOD, serious software is hard work, requires risk, investment and skilled talent in many facets from business to technology. This author over simplifies to the point of e-absurdity. You just plug a hip-bone into the thigh-bone, or is it authentication + framework + function1 + function2 yields application. What garbage, if software were that easy, no more books would be needed.

Once I realised the silliness, (it takes about 10 minutes to read the whole book) I scanned the author's background: A failed e-company (ec cube) to his credit and it appears to me he is just about done with his latest debacle, something called enamics, based on yet another apparently mindless book.

Please do yourself a favor, avoid this book, this author, and, why, oh, why, did Cambridge publish this? A great conspiracy must be behind this...

E-Enterprise: ýWell worth your time!.......2001-04-18

Being an MBA/MSE student, I primarily picked this book to supplement concepts learned in my E-commerce class. My hope was to gain a more detailed insight into e-commerce strategy. I was not disappointed.

This book is jam packed with valuable models, insight and very useful advice. Hoque provides a structured, informative outline of fundamental B2B and B2C business concepts that you need to consider and understand in order to accomplish a successful transition to clicks-and-mortar. He presents a well-defined blueprint from "Brochureware" all the way to E-enterprise and explains the benefits of integrating the extended value chain model into your business model. The book is easy to read and Hoque makes excellent use of relevant examples from companies such as GE, Ariba and Cisco to name a few. He makes good use of tables and figures, although I do feel they could have been made more comprehensive in certain involved chapters. E-Enterprise has the advantage of being a recent publication and most of the information presented in the book is still very applicable, unlike other books that are barely a year old and are close to being obsolete. This book is an excellent resource for all-level management, entrepreneurs and generally all who are interested in the dynamics of a true, sustainable strategy for transformation and "re-transformation".

Read it. It's well worth your time!

The middle/high school biology book you've been looking for!.......2000-01-11

For some time now, science education in the United States has been identified to be in crisis. Students too often see science classes as dull and nearly one half of students feel that what they learn in science classes is useless outside of school. "Biology: A Community Context", is a refreshing attempt to bring those students back. Compared to other introductory high school biology courses, "Biology" is far more appropriate for the vast majority of students. The book was developed with the following assumptions: (1) depth of understanding must replace coverage of isolated facts; (2) inquiry skills applicable to both societal and career success are essential; (3) ecology, evolution, and genetics are the fundamental ideas in biology; (4) active learning (hands-on/minds-on) must make up approximately 75% of the curriculum; (5) the most pressing problems students will face throughout their lives are rooted in overpopulation and the deterioration of the environment; and (6) the curriculum must be seen by teachers and students as doable. Each of the eight units in the text incorporates a unique instructional strategy that carefully considers current research on teaching, learning, and cognitive development. Overtly inquiry oriented, the instructional strategy will certainly help teachers improve students' attitude toward science, understanding of biology concepts, and science as inquiry. The instructional strategy has students actively formulating questions, observing, speculating, controlling and manipulating variables, collecting and organizing data, drawing conclusions, and applying their knowledge in various ways. Since many biology teachers feel they do not have the expertise or time to sustain an inquiry-oriented biology program, the instructional strategy is an overt attempt to help biology teachers implement active student inquiry. I had the opportunity to use "Biology: A Community Context" when I taught high school biology. While initially tentative, my students soon seized the opportunity to pursue their own research questions. I particularly remember the first unit which introduces energy and matter concepts in the context of society's waste disposal problems. Two students in my class were far more interested in automobile mechanics than biology and were skeptical of claims that used motor oil is deleterious to the environment. Hence, they proposed to use organic matter from our classroom compost pile to test the effects of used motor oil on the organisms that were teeming in the compost. How to set up the test was the problem they faced. Employing the personal compost columns built in an activity that occurred earlier in the unit, they decided to place equivalent amounts of compost in a control column and a test column. Using the knowledge they learned earlier in the unit, in both columns the two students maintained the conditions necessary for the micro-organisms living in the compost that do the decomposing. The only difference was that the test column also received a dose of used motor oil. Before adding motor oil, the students sampled both columns for the type and number of micro-organisms. Knowing that a well running compost creates heat, the students also took both compost columns' temperature and found them to be the same and well above room temperature. Two weeks after beginning the experiment, the differences between the two columns was striking! The control column was as it was before-well above room temperature and swarming with micro-organisms. The test column, however, was at room temperature, and the two students found little evidence of living micro-organisms. All this occurred while other groups of two conducted their own research projects that played off the first unit's theme. In the presentations that followed, these two students confidently provided the evidence they had gathered and urged their fellow students to return used motor oil to recycling centers rather than pouring it on the ground. If these sorts of experiences are what you wish to see in your biology or life science classroom, then "Biology: A Community Context" is the textbook you have been looking for.

Utterly forgettable..........2007-07-14

I usually sit down and write reviews for books immediately after finishing reading them. This one completely dropped from my memory as soon as it was out of my hands. Well, not entirely. I DO remember how much I didn't like it! It's been over a week since I finished it, and I forced myself to write this review simply because I felt I had to balance out all the positive reviews here. I am actually shocked that there are so many! I guess fans of chick lit would like this book. Unfortunately, I found it completely shallow and a waste of both time and paper. It was my book club selection, which I always (well, almost) finish, so I did force myself to sit through this whole book even though I wanted to chuck it aside for most of the time. How many times can we read about sex? I'm no prude, and the occasional sex scene or innuendo here and there is fine. Here, though, it's ALL she writes about; if she deleted all the sexual references from this novel she'd have a short story!!! I hated the main character, and hoped that there would a "twist" from the outcome forecasted on the cover and that SHE would die instead of her "soul mate." I guess you'll have to read it to find out. Personally, I think the author was trying too hard to seem smart and deep. Unfortunately, I don't think she is either.

This book has a great premise and showed a lot of promise for me from the title alone since I figure if people can come up with clever titles then the book must be clever too. Though of course it's not always the case.

However, when I read this book it started to go real bland halfway through the book especially knowing that the guy was going to die from the beginning obviously. Why would she predict this in the beginning if something tragic like it wasn't going to happen.

The guy is almost too idealistic and the chic gives the flavor of making her sound like a lot of chic flick characters.

It was realistic and interestesting despite those flaws and I'd recommend it for a good quick read, nothing spectacular though.

This book not only changed my perception of a true novel, but it made me feel alive. After I read this book I realized that good funky, modern writing is all about raw honesty and cuss words. You will absolutely fall in l-o-v-e with Beatrice and Jacob. I did and i will never ever forget their story. Read this book a million times and your heart and life will be fulfilled.

Although the book starts out with a 12 year old going to a fortune teller it isn't appropriate for preteens. I am not even sure if it is appropriate for teens. It is not a feel good story. More true to life. I thought it was really well written and I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended.

Devastating and Beautiful.......2006-08-09

The beginning and the end of the book were amazing. The middle was a bit slower but still very readable and good; de bartolo's writing style is very fun and lyrical, and her characters are unique in the way that you never knew you wanted to be. It made me wish for a love like that, for a soulmate like that even though I wouldn't necessarily find the characters in the book "my type" etc.

A great read. I laughed, sobbed, and basically couldn't put it down.

Have to say though, that How to Kill a Rock Star (by the same author) was better in all aspects: the story, the writing style, the character, the amount to which it affected you (I was in heaven for the first third, toe-curling for the second, sobbing in the third, then cycled around again).

It might not make sense but even though it was nothing like Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's wife in tone, story, or character, if you like that book, you'll probably like de Bartolo's books.

We all know just how important 'dad' is, and how deeply we hurt and how profoundly we are impacted throughout our lives when he isn't there for us, or betrays or disappoints us. So for all the women who carry the burden of the wounds left by fathers who were/are absent physically, emotionally, spiritually or through abuse, please read A Dad-Shaped Hole in My Heart.

Dr. Wright, through narrative, case studies (stories), survey/assessment, scripture and written exercises helps daughters bring to the forefront their experiences and disappointments with their fathers - in order to resolve them and be healed.

I found the chapters on fatherless daughters (physically or emotionally absent or abusive) to be particularly powerful. The symptoms are worth reading to see if they fit you or someone you love. The chapter on daughters of divorce and the Adult Child of Divorce Characteristics (ACOD) is a must read. Then ask yourself, do I fit into any of these characteristics? No doubt any daughter of divorce will see themselves in some of the nine traits.

But it is the chapters on grieving absent fathers, facing the past and how to change your relationship with your dad that is so compelling. But the most important chapter is about God as your real father-God, the father who loves you unconditionally and has been and will always be there for you.

I believe that this book will be helpful not only to daughters but to their fathers as well. Daughters read the book and prayerfully follow the suggestions. Dads, read the book, see yourself and learn how to change and help heal that "dad-shaped hole" in your daughter's heart. A lot has been happening lately.... a lot of tragedy in the past 4 years! Take Sept 11th, the war, the recent Tsunami, then all the Hurricanes. Surely a void has been plaguing our hearts waiting to be answered. This book, "The God-Shaped Hole" is like a comfort balm in the place that chills the heart pained with questions and uncertainty. Instead of feeling victimized, we find an uplifting voice soothing our spirits and honoring those we've lost. This book is great for those who have lost someone recently, for children needing to understand death, for people who fear what lies beyond the veil of life when they die, for why these bad things have to happen, and for those in the professional practice of grief, 'death & dying' and spiritual growth. I've met some amazing people recently who rode through and survived hurricane Katrina....Grandma ( a character in Angell's book) is that great soul who takes the pain life bears with a kind of spiritual dignity much like these amazing souls who lost everything but themselves and select loved ones. She (Grandma)is strong and reveals the mystery we all need to hear through her grandson Joey's eyes.

A great book. It helped to find that spiritual center within me. It does a great job of takeing me back to my earliest thoughts as a child and helps me understand how to understand and handle loss and grief throughout a life time. It helped me understand and recognize the spirit of God within me. I highly recommend it to be read to children and by children as well as adults. It will help them to be able to cope with loss in thier lives.
It is a wonderful book !
