Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well written and referenced...........2005-01-02

I used this book for a CTUonline.edu class and have found it to be very well written. I am already familiar with how the e-commerce world works, but for those that are not, it does a great job of explaining just about everything. Plenty of website references and case studies so that you understand HOW businesses are implementing various e-commerce strategies.

    Book Description

U.S. securities firms are the most competitive in the world and are now facing challenges posed by the internationalization of securities markets. Struggle and Survival on Wall Street provides a comprehensive economic analysis of competition among securities firms. John Matthews analyzes the interaction of the industry's structure, conduct and performance. To meet the competition and the needs of their customers, he argues, firms develop new financial products, some of which become new lines of business. The most important decisions firms make concern the methods of entry into these lines of business. Those firms that successfully innovate and adapt their organizations are in the best position to deal with both domestic and international competition. The regulatory framework of the industry is vital to its growth and Matthews makes policy recommendations which urge regulators, particularly the Securities and Exchange Commission, to provide for a framework in which organizational change can take place.

              Book Description

                              Book Description

Analysis of molecular sequence data is the main subject of this introduction to computational biology. There are two closely connected aspects to biological sequences: (i) their relative position in the space of all other sequences, and (ii) their movement through this sequence space in evolutionary time. Accordingly, the first part of the book deals with classical methods of sequence analysis: pairwise alignment, exact string matching, multiple alignment, and hidden Markov models. In the second part evolutionary time takes center stage and phylogenetic reconstruction, the analysis of sequence variation, and the dynamics of genes in populations are explained in detail. In addition, the book contains a computer program with a graphical user interface that allows the reader to experiment with a number of key concepts developed by the authors.

This textbook is intended for students enrolled in courses in computational biology or bioinformatics as well as for molecular biologists, mathematicians, and computer scientists.

4 out of 5 stars try the enclosed GUI program.......2006-10-14

For some readers, the best attraction of the book is the GUI program that lets you quickly experiment and apply the main ideas. The text is very interdisciplinary, written for diverse audiences, spanning biology, computer science and mathematics. Some aspects of the book may perhaps be too mathematical for some biology readers. Say the Hidden Markov Models, for example. But if you keep at it, you should get able to get the gist of the models. Which is another reason for the usefulness of the GUI. Essentially, so long as you understand the basic math ideas, the GUI lets you sidestep the grotty details and focus on applying the overall models.

It could also be that the book is suitable for a university course. The chapter exercises and accompanying answers are useful, in this regard.

This book is a record of the one-day symposium organized by the Space Policy Institute of the George Washington University's Elliot School of International Affairs, in cooperation with NASA's Office of Mission to Planet Earth. The meeting provided an authoritative overview of the progress that had been made to date in the study of Earth from space and identified the steps being taken to ensure that future space-based Earth observation missions make as great a scientific contribution as possible in support of the Earth system science concept.

                                  Book Description

An entertaining, instructive, diverse, and unusual book, Light and Dark: An Exploration in Science, Nature, Art and Technology encompasses a wide range of topics not normally found in one book. With more than 100 diagrams, graphs, and figures, the subjects discussed include the history of artificial lighting, eclipse cycles, light-sensitive eyeglasses, rainbows, art, bioluminescence, the clock setting at the South Pole, zebra stripe patterns, lighthouses, color perception, the harvest moon, and how information and speech can be conveyed by light from the sun or a laser. The book encourages readers to take a more careful look at many familiar phenomena, such as the variations in the duration of twilight through the year and the ability of human vision to misinterpret patterns of lines under certain conditions. It describes the anatomical peculiarities of four-eyed fish and explains how the Jewish calendar contrives to follow both solar and lunar cycles. It also presents the reasons why tortoise shell cats are almost always female. Readers are informed where they can see 19th century military equipment that could convey messages rapidly over vast differences.

I was disappointed with this book. Based on the content of the book, if you have not snagged a man with money while in college, you have missed your opportunity. This book really does not give much input on how an entry level professional would marry up. Secondly, it does not help if you are out of the circle trying to get in. The author makes it obvious that she came from a background with money so it was much easier for her to attract a man with money because she is already in the circle. However there is no advice given to those who are trying to marry up. I would recommend this book to maybe college freshman but not for anyone else. It is a waste of time. I am glad I did not pay full price.

                                  4 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING.......2005-10-14

It;s an entertaining book, but it can be pointed out that Kevin Doyle and John T. Molloy have written books on this subject and both of those authors seem to share the opinion that the universal qualities men look for in a mate are accomplishment and morality, notwithstanding all female efforts to be sexually alluring or socially superior.

This book was so good I had everyone I know (even men) taking the quiz to see what type of gold-digger they were. I love the fact that Rich kept it real and let 'em know that you have to use your personality as well as appearance to get and keep a worthy man. I also love that she broke it down for you depending on your quiz results and catered to the scene that you might feel most comfortable on. Although some of the ideas and stories in the book feel a little unrealistic and the constant preaching about true love will have skeptics like me sucking their teeth, she does sound loyal to the idea of self love and holding out for the highest bidder on your heart. This book if perfect for those curious about gold-digging, but a little shy of life in the fast lane.
