A collection of case studies..........2007-09-29

...rather than a "how to" or tutorial ESRI book, but nonetheless interesting for learning different approaches to solving spatial problems. The math content is minimal, but the target audience is probably the researcher rather than the GIS practitioner. The individual chapters are well-written, but since they span such a broad range of topics (see the TOC below) few people are likely to read this book cover-to-cover. I was content to have been able to borrow it from the library.

I'm a GIS manager with 23 years of real-world experience, I am the program director for the GIS degree program at Tarrant County College where I also teach advanced GIS classes ... This book was way over my head. It's first 5 pages are a matrix of the authors and their academic qualifications - there are 36 of them. That should have been a warning of the complexity of the speach.

Each chapter is written by a different author, and it's almost as if they try to speak in the most complex terms, and to be more complex than the last chapter. Written by pure acedemics FOR pure academics.

Make no mistake, the subject matter is not that complex - just the language. I would reccomend the "ESRI Guide to Spatial Analysis Volume 2" for a better primer on spatial analysis and how to make it work for you.

Description:
Landslides are a serious concern in steepland areas where intensive storms are common. The level of landslide hazard is not only dependent on storm and land physical attributes, human activities, especially agriculture practices, are also important considerations. Hurricane Mitch was one of the strongest hurricanes of the 20th century; it generated intense rain that triggered widespread landslides and flooding throughout Honduras and Nicaragua. The objective of this study was to develop and test a heuristic approach for predicting spatial distribution of landslide hazard. Four variables, slope, aspect, stream proximity, and land cover type, generated from available topography and remote sensing data, were used in the model. This model was developed and verified in southern Honduras based on data from the Namasigue watershed and validated in the adjacent El Triunfo watershed. Results of GIS analyses showed that the likelihood of landslide was significantly influenced by slope and land cover. As slope increased, the percentage of land affected by landslides, when the soils were saturated, increased sharply on land used for crop production, indicating that agricultural activity and the associated removal of deep-rooted permanent vegetation increased the landslide hazard on steep sites. Consequently, sites covered by shrub fallow and forests had relatively low incidence of landslides regardless of the topographic features. The model was effective in predicting landslide hazard and generating landslide hazard maps; this model has been found to be a useful aid for soil and water conservation organizations in the region to target conservation investment.

I checked this book out from the public library, and kept renewing it...then when I could 'renew' no more, I sat down to make copies of Favorites.
When the number of Favorites got past a half dozen, I surrendered and bought the book. There is a 'home' quality and moisture retention in Honey that isn't possible with processed white or brown sugar. Gotta luv it!!

Whether you're a cook, a gardener, or just have a sweet-tooth, this book is great fun -- a real pleasure visually and reading-wise. The history part is fascinating and well-written, the recipes look sumptuous, and the crafts seem simple enough to do with a minimum of preparation and time. It's really beautiful and a great gift -- I love my copy so much, I'm getting one for my mom!

The research in this book covers papers on a great number of research projects on the responses of plants and crops of natural terrestrial ecosystems, of agro-ecosystems, and of aquatic ecosystems, to enhanced solar UV-B as a result of stratospheric ozone depletion. Some introductory chapters deal with general aspects of how plants respond to UV-B radiation.
Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) is a primary energy resource for terrestrial plants, necessary for plant growth. Inevitably terrestrial plants absorb UV-B when exposed to solar radiation. The spectral balance between PAR and UV-B is discussed in several chapters. The responses of plants and ecosystems from the Antarctic and Arctic to enhanced solar UV-B radiation as a consequence of the hole in the ozone layer are considered in some detail. In addition the papers in the book discuss the problem of how responses of plants to UV-B radiation interact with other environmental factors.
The book is of great importance for those who are involved in global change topics: biologists, ecologists, earth scientists, agronomists, environmental scientists, and those who develop environmental policy.

I heard this book & author discussed on Garage Logic: Rave reviews. It's about St.Paul, so it must be interesting at least. Wrong!
The book is trash and that's where I threw it.
Don't waste your money or time on this book.

I really identified with the main character. It was an interesting storyline. It would make a good book club selection.

This was such a dynamic read that I literally could not put it down. Having been raised in the setting of the story initially had me hooked, but the mystery of Gretch the wretch, and the solution to her unfamoble family horror had me turning the pages before I was done reading them. Cal is a hero in the same vein as Atticus Finch, someone who sticks up for rights of the unpopular and different. His selfless acts had me in tears. Not only did I grow up just 3 blocks from him, I also went to Central High, have a sister named Peggy, had a father who drove the streetcars, was born in 1949, and spent a short portion of my youth in the workhouse. I can't recomend this book highly enough!

Not bad... but not 5-star, either.......2005-12-18

The story moves quickly, but the plot feels blocky, like parts couldn't be integrated more smoothly, and some aspects seemed only to be there for aesthetic purposes--like the blatant allegory that really wasn't necessary, and in fact detracted from the story.

The characters, though, were well-written and strong, and the setting was wonderful.

Plot Twists and Interesting Characters.......2005-12-06

I started this novel some time ago and then put it down, thinking I knew where it was going. I went back to the book later and found myself more than pleasantly surprised by the plot twists I didn't expect (though some of the story was fairly predictable). In short: once I got about a third of the way into the novel, I was hooked. A very good read. My only real criticism is that the central character is a bit too good to be true. Overall, it's a nice coming-of-age novel and fits in nicely with other books set in Minnesota such as "Grand Opening" and "Hillcrest Journal."
