Customer Reviews:
Why didn't I check reviews?????.......2007-05-18
I purchased this book after browsing it at the bookstore and reading about all the nifty extra downloads available at the book's "companion site." Guess what? All the reviews are right - there IS NO SITE. It is now May of 2007 and the site STILL says it is "coming soon," with no explanation. The companion site (which sounded very cool in the book)was never developed and not only is there no explanation at the site - but not even here at Amazon where Matt Haughey and the other authors have the opportunity to write in the book blog - or leave comments to the reviews in answer to all those wondering about what happened. I just don't get it. The silence is deafening. No site? A disappointment, but no problem that can't be forgiven if someone just took the time to offer those of us who spent $30.00 an explanation. But even after 2 years of publication, that seems to be too much trouble. Shame.
No online content.......2006-07-14
I bought this book at full price and was disgusted to find out the website they direct you to has no content! At the bookstore, I was excited by all of the examples and code I could download from hackingmt.com. I accessed the website at home and there was nothing on it. There is some value to the book, but much of the advanced material is all on the missing website. Terrible!
Is this a joke?.......2006-04-08
To be honest, I'm VERY disgusted with this book - I just purchased it this afternoon, started to read it and went to the web site that was supposed to contain plugins and other materials from the book, only to find that it is essentially an EMPTY site! The site is located at:
[...]
There is no reason that this book has been out for such a long period time and yet there is still no real support site! On top of that, one of the authors even touts that this bogus site is "coming soon." That's right, Jay Allen announces on his own blog that:
"Hacking Movable Type (which has a 'coming-soon' companion website, hackingmt.com) is finally out and it's even more fantastic than I remember."
That post is located at:
[...]
He made that post on August 18, 2005 and it's now the middle of April 2006. Frankly, I'm disgusted and can not recommend this book if the authors and publisher (Wiley) are so dishonest.
Great concept, but completely missing content.......2005-10-22
A great idea for a book but it falls flat in execution. The book promises several plugins and support files are available on its website but no such site exists. The book was published in July and still nothing. You cannot use Chapters 16 or 19 whatsoever, which were the exact reasons for my purchase. The site claims the hurricane is to blame. While I do have sympathies, wasn't that after July? Wouldn't you have your support site ready to go at publishing time? I have so far gotten no response from emailed queries about the missing content. I do not recommend this book due to this situation, which is a shame as it held so much promise. If you don't mind missing that portion, then perhaps you'll like this resource.
powerful plug-ins.......2005-08-05
A sysadmin might specialise in various jobs. Hence we have a database sysadmin or a website sysadmin. But recently, there has been the rise of a blog sysadmin. It combines to some extent duties of the other two sysadmins. This book shows that if you want to run a blog site, and choose Movable Type, then you are basically running a database.
The book offers three types. All free and open source. MySQL. PostgreSQL and SQLite. The book chooses to use MySQL when demonstrating examples. But much of these seems easily portable to the other SQLs. So if MySQL is not your game, don't let that put you off the book. The book skims quickly over the theory of relational databases, and how these are implemented in MySQL.
At a higher level than the database, you access Movable Type via several APIs. Of these, the Perl API might be the most attractive, given Perl's popularity.
But of all the chapters, you might want to devote the most attention to that on plug-ins. Many third parties [you?] can and have written over 100 of these. Even if you do not intend to write one, it's worth perusing what's out there on the net, just in case one fits your situation.

Book Description
This book examines in some detail how our concepts of an ideal or `universal' audience influence legal argument. It shows how asking what are the arguments and the forms of argumentation that we believe would be accepted by such an audience, is a useful analytical tool. The book explores what, if any, are the constraints that our vision of an ideal audience imposes on public discourse and particularly on legal discourse. Some visions of a universal audience are widely shared; others are only shared within particular political and legal cultures. Stylistic preferences can have as important an influence on legal decision making as do substantive preferences. In some cultures and legal systems there is a preference to resort to broad general principles; in others there is a preference for a more circumscribed and particular mode of legal argument. Different legal cultures have different idealized notions as to the role of the judge. Different conceptions of the role of the judge will influence many aspects of legal decision making, including how statutes and other authoritative official instruments should be interpreted. All these issues will also be influenced by how a particular legal culture envisions the common or public good and by how tolerant a particular legal culture is of diverse outcomes, that is by how much discretion superior legal decision makers are prepared to grant inferior decision makers. This volume will be of interest to academics and professionals in the fields of legal philosophy, argumentation and comparative law.

Book Description
The study of capillarity is in the midst of a veritable explosion. Hence the temptation to write a new book, aiming at an audience of students. What is offered here is not a comprehensive review of the latest research but rather a compendium of principles. How does one turn a hydrophilic surface into one that is hydrophobic, and vice versa? We will describe a few solutions. Some rely on chemical treatments, such as coating a surface with a molecular layer. Others are based on physics, for instance by controlling the roughness of a surface. We will also examine the dynamics of wetting. Drops that spread spontaneously do so at a rate that slows down with time. They can be tricked into covering large areas by spreading them suddenly. We will describe a few of the many facets of their dynamical properties. Special additives are required for water to foam. Foams are desirable in a shampoo but can be a nightmare in a dishwasher detergent. Antifoam agents have been developed and are well known, but how do they work? It is also possible to generate bubbles and foams without special additives, for example in pure and viscous liquids such as glycerin, molten glass, and polymers. As we will see, the laws of draining and bursting then turn out to be quite different from the conventional ones. This book will enable the reader to understand in simple terms such questions that affect every day life -- questions that also come up during in industry. The aim is to view systems that often prove quite complex in a way that isolates a particular physical phenomenon, often avoiding descriptions requiring advanced numerical techniques will oftentimes in favor of qualitative arguments. This strategy may at times jeopardize scientific rigor, but it makes it possible to grasp things efficiently and to invent novel situations.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful and easy to read!.......2006-03-04
This is a great book for anyone interested in capillarity and wetting phenomena. What I like about it is that it gives the reader a grasp of how things work and it goes through a lot of practical examples. The equations are voluntarily simplified (constants often omitted) to only leave the important variables and reveal the "mechanics of how things work". However, although the equations look simple, they do capture the essence of the problem and they are always perfectly sound. This is an approach that de Gennes uses a lot and which I believe makes things easier to understand. Moreover, the 3 authors of the book are, like the previous reviewer said, very well known and respected scientist in their field, which adds to the scientific soundness of their approach. In summary, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the physics of wetting.
Intuitive, elegant, insightful, beautiful!.......2005-05-08
Capillarity and Wetting Phenomena, like every text and paper bearing the name of de Gennes is intuitive, insightful, elegant, beautiful and extremely useful text. The names de Gennes, Brochard and David Quere are well known to the researchers in this area, and this book basically brings together their deep insight about a host of different phenomena in very simple words and equations. The described physics of wetting, surface tension, droplet spreading, instabilities, bubbles, etc. is developed in a style where qualitative arguments, dimensional arguments and experimental observations are used to describe a variety of complex phenomena. The apparent lack of mathematical rigor is a blessing to everyone interested in developing a taste and temperament for this extremely important field. While one can find several related texts in the field, none other is written in this delightfully insightful way. This is one of the rare gems that everyone from a high school student to most advanced researcher in the field can read, enjoy, learn from and be delighted to possess.

Book Description
Despite the large quantity of phenomenological information concerning the bulk properties of nematic phase liquid crystals, little is understood about the origin of the surface energy, particularly the surface, interfacial, and anchoring properties of liquid crystals that affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. Self-contained and unique, Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals provides an account of new and established results spanning three decades of research into the problems of anchoring energy and adsorption phenomena in liquid crystals. The book contains a detailed discussion of the origin and possible sources of anchoring energy in nematic liquid crystals, emphasizing the dielectric contribution to the anchoring energy in particular. Beginning with fundamental surface and anchoring properties of liquid crystals and the definition of the nematic phase, the authors explain how selective ion adsorption, dielectric energy density, thickness dependence, and bias voltage dependence influence the uniform alignment of liquid crystals and affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. They also discuss fundamental equations regulating the adsorption phenomenon and the dynamic aspects of ion adsorption phenomenon in liquid crystalline systems. Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals serves as an excellent source of reference for graduates and researchers working in liquid crystals, complex fluids, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, chemical engineering, and electronic engineering, as well as providing a useful general introduction to and background information on the nematic liquid crystal phase.

Book Description
"How large are the differences between the two samples to be matched?" "Can I use the measurement technique to help reproduce the color of a sample?" These two questions can be critical to the successful completion of a sale or the budgeting of a product, run, but they are not always easily answered. Some color measurement software systems give the appearance of greater accuracy than they can actually deliver. Practical Color Measurement tells you everything you need to know about the principles and limitations of computerized color measuring systems. Mathematics and optical theory are kept to a minimum, replaced by numerous real-life examples based on normal production samples, detailed tables, and the practical knowledge gained by Anni Berger-Schunn through many years of professional experience and research. You will learn how to:
- Apply critical analysis to the numbers supplied by color measurement systems
- Determine just how large the difference between two samples is Use the measuring technique to help reproduce the color of a sample And more

Book Description
Suspension Acoustics: An Introduction to the Physics of Suspensions is an introduction to the physics of suspensions of bubbles, droplets, and solid particles in both gases and fluids. Rather than treating each combination separately, a unified approach is used that permits most particle-fluid combination types to be discussed together. To do this, the book first presents a detailed discussion of the basic particle motions that small particles can sustain, paying particular attention to translations and pulsations, and to the thermal effects that occur as a result of those motions. The book then introduces the reader to the dynamics and thermodynamics of suspensions, with acoustic motions providing the main focus in the latter part of the book. The important acoustic problems of attenuation and dispersion are discussed from several fundamental perspectives. The book concludes with applications of acoustic techniques to the characterization and modification of suspensions by means of acoustic waves.

The game continues........2007-06-08
Dunk Hoffnung, with the Bad Bay Hackers, returns for a starring role in Book Two of the Blood Bowl Trilogy.
Without enough teammates to continue playing the sport of Blood Bowl, Coach Pegleg's team sets sail for Far Albion. Spike! Magazine sends reporter Lästiges Weibchen with them to make a documentary of anything special that may occur; after all, chaos just seems to follow this particular team around more than any other. Pegleg wants to hunt down the location of the legendary Far Albion Cup trophy and retrieve it in hopes that the myth surrounding it is true. The legend states that the team with this cup in its possession will be unbeatable.
Olsen Merlin (an elf) is a former team wizard of the Notting Knights. His own fate is linked with the Far Albion Cup, so of course Olsen steps forward to help the Hackers get the cup. While doing so, Dunk and the (few) teammates left run into trouble. Bandits, a diseased cult, and even a treeman (which are all but extinct) are just the beginning of the mess the legendary cup gets them into.
***** Not as many Blood Bowl games in this, the second book of the trilogy, than the first. However, author Matt Forbeck keeps things entertaining with his twisted imagination, funny dialogue, and lots of action. I can hardly wait to dive into the third installment. BRAVO! *****
