Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Windows Server Storage.......2003-11-21

Given that there are not many references dealing with Windows Server Storage, this book has value for the developer in understanding the nuts and bolts of the technology as well as the administrator in learning how this technology and the operating system interoperate. Dilip Naik succeeds quite well in both areas.

The detail in the hardware requirements, types of devices, communication protocols - all important in understanding the technology if you are going to administer or program for it. How it communicates with Windows and the driver model is of particular interest to me as a Systems Engineer - if it's not functioning properly, I have to know - in detail, how it talks to the OS.

Eliminating layers is the only way to narrow down the possibilities. The diagrams and the associated detail of the kernel, driver, protocol and disk layers are invaluable to the topic at hand.

In the journey through this book, you start with a basic introduction to Windows NT and Windows NT storage devices. This is the basis for all that comes, but may be familiar to many who deal with driver and kernel technology. Next is Direct Attached Storage, Network Attached Storage, and an intro to Fibre Channel SAN. No storage technology is complete without discussion of backup and restoration. And, file systems are an important treatment in the book as well.

There is a chapter on storage management - and for an administrator, clearly this is the area in which the book is light. Much more could have been done with this, but the focus of the book is not on the administrator - but slanted more to aiding the developer in understanding the technology.

IP Storage, iSCSI, and InfiniBand are discussed, as is the Windows spin on the implementations. High Availability and RAID options are expanded upon, as well as some third party options.

Finally is a discussion of storage features by Windows version release, Windows NT, 2000 and Server 2003. Included is a short discussion of what's missing, and a discussion of futures.

Naik does an admirable job in delivering a book dealing with complex technology and attempting to provide information in which infrastructure technologists as well as developers can glean value from it. Though there is no code in the book, that's not the goal - it's about the technology.

If you're looking for a good reference in Windows Storage Technologies (and the supporting hardware, firmware, and software), this is one that should find it's way onto your shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to various storage systems.......2003-11-14

I found certain chapters way above my head ( I am a software person, not hardware) but other chapters, especially the ones dealing with SANs and RAID configurations) incredibly useful. It answered a lot of questions I had on the different RAID configurations

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to Windows Storage Features.......2003-09-07

This was kind of book which I was looking for sometime. Generally, one finds lot of books on Storage Technologies, SAN, Fibre Channel etc, written with system administrative perspective. This book is the next step. It gives nice technical intrduction of storage technologies and how they have been implemented on Windows Server. It is good resource for sys admins and management folks who want to understand storage feature in greater detail. The language is nice and easy. Though, sometime you feel the flow is not very smooth and its jerky sometimes. It covers pretty much all the storage features available on Windows. I believe this book is a good step in the right direction. It is technical to some level but obviously not enough for a system level programmer. Some of the details are missing( which might be intentional). Topics need to exploded further so that it can serve as a great reference. The book does not point to some of the challenges facing Windows Server Storage

        Book Description

Until recent years, formal bank insolvency proceedings were rare occurrences, with governments more often than not coming to the rescue of failing banks. As a result, few studies relating to bank failure have paid much attention to the regulatory framework for failing banks and the conduct of formal bank insolvency proceedings. However, in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, more attention has been focused on issues of bank insolvency. Structural reforms in the banking sector of various Asian countries, in particular the implementation of effective exit rules to expel insolvent and non-viable banks from the market, have been considered of primary importance to restoring confidence in the troubled banking sector. In addition, the ability of governments within the European Union to rescue insolvent banks has been significantly limited by strict rules on competition, suggesting that failing banks will become increasingly subject to insolvency proceedings. The Legal Aspects of Bank Insolvency compares the legal framework for dealing with insolvent banks in Western Europe, the United States and Canada, identifying the distinctive features of each regime and discussing the main issues and choices in dealing with failing banks. It also examines the implications of a cross-border bank insolvency, and considers different approaches to the problems it raises, including the supranational approach of the proposed European Directive on the Reorganization and Winding-up of Credit Institutions. This work will be of value to lawmakers, to consultants and scholars engaged in technical assistance work, and to those who advise the legislators and officials involved in devising a legal framework for bank insolvency. It will also be of interest to practitioners and in-house counsel working in the field of banking and corporate law.

            Book Description

The aim of the Controlled Reproduction in Farm Animals Series is to provide a general review of the literature dealing with the different ways in which reproduction in the major farm mammals can be controlled and manipulated. It is effectively an expanded and new edition of a previous work, Controlled Breeding in Farm Animals (Pergamon Press, 1983). However, the literature on this subject has expanded so rapidly since the time of the earlier volume, that it is now thought appropriate to publish it in four separate volumes. Buffalo, goats, deer, and camelids have also been added to the species covered. The set of volumes will appeal to reproductive physiologists, animal scientists, and workers in veterinary medicine. Individual volumes should also be of value to all interested in the particular species covered.

                        Book Description

Based on data from an experiment which ran for ten years, this book summarizes the results of the Atmospheric Physics Department of the St. Petersburg University and the Main Geophysical Observatory. The processed data now forms a rich dataset of spectral values of radiative characteristics under different atmospheric conditions. The analysis of this database clearly shows that the solar radiative absorption in a dusty and cloudy atmosphere is significantly higher than assumed to date. Both graduate students of atmospheric sciences as well as scientists and researchers in the field of meteorology and climatology will find a wealth of new data and information in this monograph.

                            Book Description

Up-to-date and comprehensive, An Introduction to Nonlinear Plasma Physics describes the numerous nonlinear effects in plasmas that are confined in an external magnetic field. Because a magnetized plasma is rich in wave motions, many effects related to wave phenomena can be studied. This book focuses on wave phenomena in magnetized plasmas for this reason, but it also contains some new results associated with unmagnetized plasma. Using model equations and methods derived from various areas of science, from astrophysics to fluid mechanics to nonlinear optics, the book explores high- and low-frequency wave motions as well as nonlinear low-frequency wave phenomena, making it a useful tool that applies to many disciplines.

Dating today can seem like Alices tumble down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. Whether starting out or starting again, women face the difficult task of sorting through the good (guy), the bad (boy), and the ugly (morning after) in their search for Mr. Right. Here to give hope to smart single women everywhere is Amy DeZellar, who bravely dedicated two years of her life to debunking common dating myths and documenting 50 of her dates. Shes gone wine-tasting with Indentured Cats, on a blind date who also happens to be blind, and found her artistic sentiments at odds with her desire for financial security when she simultaneously got involved with a painter named Harry Potter and a NASA super-computer designer named Teflon, all in her quest to find true love. Each of the 50 chapters in this book is dedicated to a different date, and includes the kinds of tips and sharp observations that only someone on the front lines can offer. Get ready to laugh, cry, and commiserate with Amyand learn, as she did, a few things about finding the perfect man.

Forgive the bias fact that Amy and I were buddies in high school...this lady knows how to write! I admired her keen sense of humor and comic timing back in the disco era, and like fine wine, it has only improved. Amy's candid honest and heartfelt commentaries are punchy and poignant. In our current sophisticated world of cybersex, she reminds the reader that dating is still an adventure, and no measure of late-night instant meassaging can account for the face-to-face encounter. Bravo, my friend!

                            1 out of 5 stars Sell out?.......2007-01-31

My daughter, who is 37 and in the process of divorcing her high-school -sweetheart spouse and starting to date, bought this book to learn something about dating, since the last time she dated someone other than her soon to be ex-hubby, was exactly 20 years ago.
I asked what she thought and she said, that she found "Dating Amy" not only boring after a while but also compleytely useless, since "she is not that kind of an over-age high maintenance airhead" that Amy is. This harsh opinion piqued my curiosity (yes, I know how to spell "pique" despite -or may be thanks to - the fact that English is my fourth language... but my syntax and sentence structure are often not English proper), so I read it, too. No, I would not brand Amy the way my daughter did, but this book made me very, very sad. Is that what we - and generations of suffragissts before me - fought for? Where's the emancipation, equality? (And I do not buy any of Amy's crap-of-an-excuse that men should always pay for women, because they earn more than women: by far not all men earn more than women - and nobody forced Amy to make multiple career choices with a high statistical probability of a low pay -that much we feminists have already achieved: she could have studied law or medicine, if she wanted to earn more than most American males).

How can an educated woman in her upper 30s, a woman who ran "Sufragette and the city" be so utterly unemancipated? and not in the least willing to consider EQUALITY of the sexes? Why would she want to be paid the same as men AND at the same time be treated like an object of desire (pardon, like the "cow, who needs to be bought in order to give milk", as one of the most shockingly unemancipated expressions I learned in America goes), who sells the pleasure of her company to whoever will pay for it???? ... and, much worse, appears to be proud of it?

Amy, as a heroin of the book seems mentally to be a girl-woman, badly in need of growing up and devoloping an ability to think, to reason, but since Amy the author got a book deal, I bet thanks mainly to her mental confusion than her writing skill (in so hated by you Bush America, woman as brainded phenomenon seems to be higly marketable), may be that's what Amy really wanted professionally as well as personally: to sell herself out?

5 out of 5 stars Great confessions to make an impression.......2007-01-23

What a treat! Well written, funny, insightful. As this book is mostly about finding oneself, which is essential in finding and keeping the right relationship, in addition to learning from other experiences, joining a decent dating service and staying socially active, I personally found out that it's easier to make an impression when you have exciting things to talk about and share. To feel more knowledgeable and confident about everyday's life, and be more interesting when meeting others (dates, work, or friends' gathering) I joined services like Agogus.com.

5 out of 5 stars Some great laughs!.......2006-11-14

I happened across this book at Barnes and Noble, sat there reading it awhile, and ended up buying it. It's not really a dating advice book, but it's maybe the only book on dating written by a female that I consider worthwhile (because it contains some worthwhile lessons, mostly unintentional). I paid special attention to the things her dates were saying to her and some of them really made me cringe. Is that really what women think when guys say/do that? It mostly helped me in what not to do but also allowed me to see the dating scene from the perspective of the type of woman I prefer to date. I've been single for years now, been married for years as well, and well, when it comes to the opposite sex, both can be a real challenge. But if you can laugh at the dating scene and yourself, it certainly doesn't hurt. When in her book she said "I'm ready to quit having fun and get married now", she was being facetious but wasn't aware of how close to the truth she really was. Everybody ought to find that out for themselves, so I guess I hope she does too. Definitely some great laughs!

I was originally drawn to this book because of my personal collection of blind date "horror" stories. I was in search of a kindred soul and I certainly found her in "Dating Amy". Whether you are actively dating; on hiatus or you just like good gossip, you'll love this book! Expect to learn something, though - the book is less about finding love than it is about finding oneself.

                            Book Description

Another great tale of love gone wild from author Michelle Cunnah, a favourite voice of Avon Trade fans whose loveable characters are creating a stir.

A good relationship is like a pair of comfortable shoes, right?

At first, they may pinch and squeeze, but with time (and blisters) they mould to your feet for a perfect fit.

Rosie Mayford isn't sure she believes this theory–after all, she takes a size eleven wide, so she has first–hand experience of the trials and tribulations of finding exactly the right shoes. She's praying finding the right man won't be nearly that hard. With the "help" of her meddling family and friends, it's not, even if she partly found a Mr. Right just to get them off her back.

But now what? Rosie and Jonathan couldn't be in more different places in their lives, and they are about to find out just how exhilarating–and disastrous––a mismatched love affair can be. Will they get to the part where they're broken in and life is nothing but great sex and comforting hugs, or will one of them get sent off in scorn like a pair of too–small stilettos that felt okay in the store? What do you do when Mr. Right gets the timing wrong?

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it was printed on..........2007-01-17

I was really looking forward to reading this book. I tried to give it a fair shot. I tried to force myself to be interested. I really, really tried. This book wound up being the biggest piece of crap I've ever purchased.

The opening scene was long, drawn-out, and just plain dull. The main character is the type of woman I despise. She's shallow, self-centered, insecure and dishonest. The ending is predictable but comforting, kind of like knowing you have just one last pull of the Band-Aid and the pain will cease.

I'd only recommend this vile tome if you seek birdcage fodder.

                            5 out of 5 stars Confession:I liked this novel.......2006-10-17

I have read Michelle Cunnah's previous two novels and it took awhile for me to buy her third novel "Confessions of a serial dater" but I am glad that I did. I agree with a previous reviewer in that the title of the novel is a bit misleading. When I started the book, I was expecting a superficial woman that just goes from man to man but Rosie, the main character, wasn't like that at all. Rosie goes to a Christmas dinner with her boyfriend, Jonathan, which is where she meets her Dr. Love. The only other male character that Rosie had a relationship with was a man named Harry, who appears later in the novel. The book also features a jealous cousin, an over-bearing mother, a wacky grandmother and her gnomes, two best girl-friends, a cousin who is a vicar(Priest), and the obligatory gay male best friend. Overall, I did enjoy reading "Confessions of a serial dater" and I read in in two days, which makes it a quick, light read. I don't have many complaints about this novel. Maybe a couple conversations with Rosie's mom could have been cut down or cut out. But if you've read Michelle Cunnah's previous novels and you're a chick-lit fan and even if you're not-you will probably enjoy this novel.

                            4 out of 5 stars title misleading..........2005-10-15

I thought the title was misleading. I was going to read the book regardless of the title because I have read both her other books and really enjoyed them. I don't think Rosie's dating experiences qualified her to be called "serial". If you liked 32AA and Call Waiting, give this book a try. I think you won't be disappointed.

                            4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2005-10-09

A lot of people are saying they didn't like this book as much as Michelle Cunnah's previous winners, 32AA and Call Waiting. I have to disagree. I think if you liked her other books, you'll like this one.

It's true that this book lacks a fun conceit like small-breastedness. Here, the heroine has wide feet and difficulty finding stylish shoes that fit, which is somehow just not as catchy. But the plot and characters make up for this. Rosie, our heroine, is much more capable than the heroine of 32AA and Call Waiting. Rosie is the successful co-owner of a business, Odd Jobs, and she also takes good care of her mother.

The only area where Rosie is not thriving is her love life. However, instead of being incurably single like many chick lit heroines, she has an overabundance of men in her life. At one point in the story, she finds herself at a table where she has slept with every man but one!

The central man in the story is Luke, or Dr. Love, an obstetrician who catches Rosie's eye at a dull work do. After a romantic night together, Rosie finds out that Dr. Love is married, and she tries to avoid him, though she runs into him and his wife everywhere. Then Rosie's competitive cousin, Elaine, starts to pursue Dr. Love.

Elaine is a masterpiece. She's one of those people who orchestrates situations so that everyone else will feel maximum embarrassment and humiliation. We all know someone like this and Michelle Cunnah brings Elaine to life.

It's somewhat predictable whom Rosie will end up with, but there are so many entertaining twists and turns along the way that I didn't really mind.

2 out of 5 stars Not this time.......2005-08-26

I am a huge fan of Michelle Cunnah. I have absolutely adored her last books. Unfortunately, this latest entry falls far from the mark.

Cunnah usually has a way of writing her scenes that make them funny and interesting. This is not the case with this book. The opening scene is a good example.

Cunnah starts off with a funny premise and then goes on and on and on and insists in describing it in minute to minute detail at which point it just becomes boring.

We get that the boss is a jerk and we get that our main character is going to have to be the poor suffering soul among all the kiss ups. But for some reason, Cunnah just kept going page after page on ONE scene.

It was too much and it basically set the tone, for me, for the rest of the book.

I just could not get into this storyline. It felt rehashed somehow and I did not really care about the ending.

I guess every author is allowed one miss and Cunnah had hers with this one.

                            Book Description

Travel writer Sydney Alexander is ready for one particular journey to end: her frustrating search for a Mr. Right. As a Christian twentysomething navigating the weird world of dating, she's encountered more than her share of frogs. From men who can't keep a jo to self-centered professionals, her lackluster dates leave Sydney wondering where the good guys are hiding.

But things are looking way up. Just after landing her dream job, she meets an eligible round of bachelors, including a dashing European, a promising blind date, and a charming coffee-shop wordsmith. Now Sydney will discover just how far she's willing to compromise to land her dream guy.

Around the World in 80 Dates shares a woman's humorous take on being single. Filled with wit, real issues, and quirky characters, Sydney's story will encourage female readers to never settle for less than God's best.

                            4 out of 5 stars interesting tale.......2007-10-08

Travel magazine writer Sydney Alexander believes there is someone out there for her. However, to her major disappointment most of the men she has dated have been Losers with a capital L.

Getting a bit desperate Sydney tries going AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DATES and to her surprise begins to meet some nice males while on her serial dating odyssey. She also has a professional opportunity if she takes a risk. However, Sydney must overcome her fear of failure with the caring hunks she has met and in her vocation if she is personally and professionally going to succeed.

This is an interesting tale starring a likable heroine whose exploits are fun to follow. Sydney's escapades feel genuine as she never loses sight of her belief that someone out there is intended for her (and visa versa) although her failed attempts depress her, but gain readers' empathy especially those who have waited for their personalized Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet. Although the changing perspectives between her first person confessions as a Christian serial dater to the third person view of a particular date feels somewhat chaotic, fans will enjoy her efforts to find her Mr. Right.
