Very unhappy with my purchase.......2006-08-28
The information on the web site was not very informative and trying to get to the check out was a hassel. What really is pathetic was the shipping. Either pay a ridiculus amount to get the item here or wait 2 weeks and not pay for shipping. Well in no real hurry I choose not to pay for shipping. The item was damaged and not packed very well. It was taped shut to keep the information and item together. I am still missing the cover and parts of the first chapter.

Book Description
Differences in financial structure result in contrasting financing and economic behavior. This book confronts theory and empirical research with aggregate financial data across the G7, spanning 1970 through 2000. It compares the contrasting patterns and development of financial structures with the main theoretical and empirical results in economic literature. The resulting data analysis traces portfolios over a turbulent period characterized by considerable economic and financial instability, marked financial liberalization, far-reaching technical change and volatile asset prices.

Book Description
Vast amounts of money are said to be laundered through financial intermediaries in the United Kingdom, thereby potentially affecting the integrity of the financial markets. This unique work offers a critical examination of the criminal anti-money laundering provisions and their impact on financial intermediaries, which may play a facilitating role in the money laundering process. It further considers the efficacy of the criminal law in reducing the incidence of money laundering when used in conjunction with civil liability and financial market regulation. The crucial issues relating to financial intermediaries concern the interaction between procedural norms and equitable or criminal liability, the conflicts between disclosure and client confidentiality, the privilege against self-incrimination, and the procedural aspects of imposing corporate criminal liability. The author analyses these in detail and considers to what extent the present provisions may need modification, particularly in light of the demands of procedural fairness laid down in the European Convention on Human Rights. Finally, the book considers the impact of the international nature of money laundering on United Kingdom financial intermediaries, in terms of enforcement and the extra-territorial application of laws and disclosure orders. Money Laundering and Financial Intermediaries will be of great interest to academic and practising lawyers and anyone with an interest in the regulation of financial markets and the fight against financial crime.

Book Description
Globalization promises to bring people around the world together, to unite them as members of the human community. To such sanguine expectations, Pheng Cheah responds deftly with a sobering account of how the "inhuman" imperatives of capitalism and technology are transforming our understanding of humanity and its prerogatives. Through an examination of debates about cosmopolitanism and human rights, Inhuman Conditions questions key ideas about what it means to be human that underwrite our understanding of globalization. Cheah asks whether the contemporary international division of labor so irreparably compromises and mars global solidarities and our sense of human belonging that we must radically rethink cherished ideas about humankind as the bearer of dignity and freedom or culture as a power of transcendence. Cheah links influential arguments about the new cosmopolitanism drawn from the humanities, the social sciences, and cultural studies to a perceptive examination of the older cosmopolitanism of Kant and Marx, and juxtaposes them with proliferating formations of collective culture to reveal the flaws in claims about the imminent decline of the nation-state and the obsolescence of popular nationalism. Cheah also proposes a radical rethinking of the normative force of human rights in light of how Asian values challenge human rights universalism.
Customer Reviews:
I Am a Human, And Nothing Inhuman Is Alien to Me.......2007-06-30
Inhuman Conditions is a serious, often laborious and sometimes tedious attempt at delineating the global forces that shape our human condition. These forces are not just economic and geopolitical but also include those techniques for the subjugation of bodies and the management of populations that Foucault designates by the term bio-power. They form the "inhuman conditions" of humanity, pointing to the fact that, as Foucault conjectures in The Order of Things, "man is an invention of recent date. And one perhaps bearing its end."
Cosmopolitanism and human rights are often seen as two primary ways of making globalization more human, particularly by opening a post-nationalist space and by placing normative limits to the sovereignty of the nation-state, which is seen as particularistic, oppressive, and even totalitarian. Pheng Cheah refuses this simple opposition between cosmopolitanism and nationalism. As he points out, cosmopolitanism preceded the birth of the nation-state in the nineteenth century: Immanuel Kant's famous essay, Toward Perpetual Peace, was written in 1795. It is more a philosophical republicanism and federalism designed to reform the absolutist dynastic state than a theory opposing the modern construct of nationality. As the Spring of Nations of 1848 illustrates, cosmopolitanism and nationalism often progressed hand in hand. And the modern defense of economic trans-nationalism by multinational firms and international organizations often coincides with the promotion of the United States' national interest.
The new academic field of global studies, illustrated by Saskia Sassen, Arjun Appadurai, and many others, has given rise to a new kind of cosmopolitanism. Its proponents suggest that existing transnational movements and exchanges can translate into actually existing popular cosmopolitanisms, understood as pluralized forms of global political consciousness comparable to the national imagining of the political community. But is there really a fit between the spatial extension of material conditions and the scope of forms of consciousness? Benedict Anderson has argued that the nation in Latin America originated in global pilgrimages from the Creole Americas to the European metropole. The role of transnational migrant communities in fanning nationalist sentiment in their own country is by now well documented. Besides, the activities of progressive social movements have to connect with the nation-state at some point because it is the primary site for the effective implementation of equitable objectives for redistribution on a large scale.
The less convincing part of the book is the author's attempt to ground his discussion on human rights in the socio-political terrain offered by post-colonial South-East Asia. His description of the role played by Chinese diasporas offers nothing new, besides the use and abuse of the Derridian concept of spectralization to characterize the instrumentalization of socio-ethnic categories by colonial powers and nationalist discourse. Indeed, Pheng Cheah has a talent for applying difficult theoretical concepts to trivial realities, and his use of the concept of bio-power, or bio-politics, in the context of Singapore's development policies could easily be replaced by the standard expressions of human capital formation, or human resource management. Besides, I would recommend him to attend an Economics 101 class before characterizing the WTO as a "transnational capitalist superstructure that institutionalizes uneven economic relations", or considering the international division of labor as "a form of superexploitation that largely benefits multinationals and deepen global economic divisions." This may appeal to some people's politics, but to me these are just empty words put in a row.

Better than Stephen King's The Mist 3-D audiobook!.......2001-05-31
This presentation really shows the potential of 3-D audio. It's all in the details. I was listening to this on headphones (the only way to get the full effect), and at one point a cuckoo clock goes off behind your right ear.
I turned around to see where it was! And I was outside!
It had nothing to do with the plot, it was just a little showing off on the part of the technicians, but that made it for me. As well, the scene at the end just envelopes you in the sounds of the hands.
I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Clive Barker, the most exciting new master of horror today, unleashes a world of powerful eroticism, violence and uncontrolled desires. In these five brilliant tales, human hands tear themselves from their masters to start a bloody revolution; a knotted string unravels dark hungering nightmares; in a Texas motel room, the living and the dead make love; a palace is built to lure Satan back to earth; and a powerful aphrodisiac creates ghastly sexual urgings.
Customer Reviews:
Good collection of creepy stories.......2006-06-10
This is a good collection of creepy stories. As usual, Clive Barker delivers wild images, exciting plots and impactful language. The story about the hands is particularly creepy and memorable. If you're new to Clive Barker, start with one of his full-length books and try the short stories later. Full-length character development is where he really shines. If you already love his writing, you'll enjoy these dark tales.
AUDIO VERSION - I'm sorry for Clive Barker that this audio book was performed and directed so poorly. Dillinger Steele mispronounces 50 or so words narrating this short collection. If you love the English language and Barker's beautiful prose, you'll cringe listening to Dillinger Steele mangle it.
A fair read.......2006-05-23
There are some blood tales in this book.Let me cut to the chase.
1)The body politic.
A very simple story. In a world where our hands have a mind of their own,one man's hand seeks to take over the world!(I know this sounds dumb, but the story is quite good.)
2)The inhuman condition.
A guy and his friends beat up a vagrant for fun, stealing from him a piece of knotted rope...
That same day, the guy who took the knotted rope from the vagrant, begins to unravel it.With the unravelling of the rope his friends suddenly start to die out,one by one...And a lot of evil starts to be unleashed. The same vagrant whom was a victim has to help the guy battle this evil.
3)Revelations.
Now this is a very fascinating story.A pastor and his wife goes to a motel, for some kind of vacation. The room in which they are staying was the scene of a murder.
In this room the ghosts terrorize the couple.
4)Down satan.
In this story a guy builds a place for satan on earth.A very short story.(not one of my favourite)
5)The age of desire.
A very good story. In this story,a victim of an Aphrodisaic experiment run away from the lab and starts to uncontrollably have sex with people...But then he soon starts to rape and murder people and things start to get nasty...
An overall fairly interesting book.I would recommend it....enjoy...Nigel.
Clive Barker Take Us On The Nightmare Journey Of A Lifetime.......2006-03-21
God, just talking about The Inhuman Condition makes me itch to read it all over again for the tenth time. Clive Barker, especially early Barker like In The Flesh, The Inhuman Condition & The Books Of Blood are so righteously killer, I can't help but re-reading them whenever I get the chance. Talk about visionary horror, Clive Barker turned the entire Horror Genre upside down with his fiction. Inventive, clever, well-written & above all, original, he was like the new incarnation of H.P. Lovecraft. Genius.
The Inhuman Condition consists of five novellas:
The Inhuman Condition: Some hoods roll a drunk and steal something very precious. A piece of rope with three knots in it. Nothing special, right? Well...once you untie the knots, something comes into being. Something terrible. Great story.
The Body Politic: Charlie has the strangest thoughts. He thinks his hands are planning a revolt, plotting against him and the whole human race. Crazy, right? Well...when he wakes up to find that his hands have strangled his wife, he's not so sure any more. Another great, original story.
Revelations!: A modern day ghost story with a small twist. An evangelsit and his troupe check into a motel where a murder most foul had taken place...so do the deceased couple, for they're there to recreate the murder or try and reconcile, who can tell. Witty and strange. Clive keeps us enthralled.
Down, Satan: The only detraction from the book's brilliance. A rather short story about a man who wants to hang with Satan so he builds Hell on earth just for that very purpose. Bizare and dark, never really takes off as a full story.
The Age Of Desire: Weird. That's the first thing that comes to mind when I think about this story. A group of scientists are doing experiments with hallucinogenic love drugs. The results are very interestng. Probably the most pornographic of all the stories. This one will make you wonder what really churns through Clive Barker's brain.
Overall, an excellent incarnation of horror. Buy it, read it, love it.
Dig it!
Did a 10th grader write this?.......2006-03-09
This is a horribly written piece of garbage. Why it was published is a mystery to me. It needs to be proofread, spellchecked and re written. Th stories are nonsensical gross-outs that go nowhere and leave the reader feeling unsatisfied. This is pure bush league. What an embarrassment to literature. Try Stephen King for sophisticated, interesting horror.
Great Collection of twisted fiction.......2002-12-02
Again, I love Clive Barker. His work is just awe-inspiring. This collection borders on classic in the likes of H.P. Lovecraft and Poe. Shoot, it doesn't just border, it crosses over. These stories will be remembered years to come, mark my words. Clive Barker is genius. His work is the real deal, he cannot be immitated. His craft is so incredible. The stories are horrifying, gruesome, and beautiful. The Body politic is terrifying as is the title story about a knot and the demons that hell unleashes when the knot is undone. This is great stuff. Why can't all authors have this ambition?

Book Description
In
The Inhuman Condition Keith Tester explores whether we are capable of coming to terms with the world we have made, then argues that we are not. We are so confused by the wonders and the sights and sounds around us that we all try to build safe little homes in which we can, for a while, be consoled by love which is doomed to fail as soon as it is thought about, and by commodities which leave us unsatisfied.
This book is a major interpretation of contemporary cultural and social relationships. It is also a major exercise in sociology which encompasses thinkers like Heidegger, Arendt, Benjamin and Simmel. The author opens with Heidegger worrying about photographs of the earth and argues that, contrary to sociological orthodoxy, the world is now more experienced in the finding than the making. Tester then explores aspects of that finding: from the beautiful promises of commodities to the noises and sights of cities, from the search for love to the throbbing gristle painted by Francis Bacon. We can only come to terms with our experiences and our existences if we embrace the inhuman idiot wisdom of kitsch; and perhaps there is no escape from the embrace of stupidity.

Book Description
The postmodern condition has delivered us into a world where our "humanity" can no longer be taken for granted. Whether his place is ceded to nature or technology, "man" is no longer "the measure of all things," rather, he is locked into processes in which the only permanence is change. Becoming Human offers a sustained engagement with these and other paradoxes about human being and its nature in the 21st-century world. Beginning with the notion that the human is not an immutable "given" but rather an ever-changing entity, this collection of essays considers our multifarious condition through the perspective of a variety of fields, including philosophy, sociology, literature, and film studies. In this book, the authors make coherent and accessible a sprawling field. The diversity of writers and approaches challenges current thinking about humanity, providing material for future scholars and researchers and prompting us to ponder these questions more deeply, while at the same time offering the reader a comprehensive, intelligible survey of recent inquiries into a potentially bewildering field.

Book Description
This book reviews the cumulative evidence for a connection between the Earth's rotation and geotectonics. Satellite and plate-motion data in particular suggest that the rotation affects geotectonics. The author recasts the classical models of body tides and argues that the energy from the tides directs the otherwise random process of convection. Among other benefits, this model could prove an important step in deciphering the flow of the Earth's mantle. Introducing a more complete model of the tidal Earth than those orthodox until now, Bostrom points to the likelihood that a non-reversing term accounts for the remarkable contrast between the Earth and its sister planet Venus--including the existence of mobile plates and the preservation of liquid water.

Book Description
Here restored at last are nearly 100 pages of text cut from the 1995 and later U.S. editions of "Youth in Revolt." Each passage is keyed to the page from which it was deleted for ease in reading. Now you can discover what happening to Lefty in Book II. Did Millie Filbert try to seduce Nick? Who ratted on Nick to the police to collect the reward? And more--a must read for Nick Twisp fans! Also collected here are a dozen short humor pieces by C.D. Payne.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2001-09-12
by far one of the funniest and best written books i've ever read. payne does a great job of getting into the mind of a 14 year old. the book flows great, with so much going on at one time, much like real life, yet with adventures that could never be imagined by a normal mundane mind. seriously a great book.
For hardcore fans only.......2001-08-14
The format of this book is completely ludicrous: it's basically everything cut from "Youth in Revolt" ... up on the page with no context. Everything from two sentences to two pages of cut text is in here introduced only by a "from page X, after words "xxx xxx" in literally hundreds of little excerpts. Imagine if you made a film out of all the scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor -- it makes about that much sense. The only way to truly make sense of this mess is to re-read your copy of "Youth in Revolt" and use this as a companion (which would mean switching books every other page). HOWEVER, if you have read YIR recently, you can somehow make sense of things and it's not totally confusing. And, thankfully, most of the passages function more as stand-alone amusing little anecdotes that were cut for obvious reasons, since they did little to drive the plot. Many, fortunately, don't suffer too much from a lack of context. Thankfully, Payne's wit is enough to make this an enjoyable read for hardcore fans. Be that as it may, the format is just generally annoying, dropping you into situations for a minute or five minutes and you never know quite where you are. Anyone but C.D. Payne cultists should steer clear.
