Book Description

Web tier frameworks have soared in popularity over the past year or so due to the increasing complexity of Java itself, and the need to get more work done with fewer resources. Developers who used to spend hours and hours writing low-level features can use a well-written framework to build the presentation tier so they start coding the "good stuff" sooner--the business logic at the core of the program. The Jakarta Struts Framework is one of the most popular presentation frameworks for building web applications with Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages (JSP) technologies. If you work with the Struts Framework, then you know it speeds development time. You also know that many of its features are made up of components that are used repeatedly. Having to stop to check each component's parameters and programming details can be a time waster. The answer? The Jakarta Struts Pocket Reference. This portable book gives you easy access to the facts you need to get your job done. The Jakarta Struts Pocket Reference is a quick reference to all the core features of the Jakarta Struts framework. An excellent companion to Programming Jakarta Struts, the pocket reference contains detailed information on the extensive Struts tag libraries, which were described in less detail in the larger work as they were still in development at that time. This little book also provides convenient coverage of the following: and much more. O'Reilly's Pocket References have become a favorite among programmers everywhere. By providing a wealth of important details in a concise, well-organized format, these handy books deliver just what you need to complete the task at hand. When you've reached a sticking point and need to get to the answer quickly, the new Jakarta Struts Pocket Reference is the book you'll want close at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, time-saving.......2005-01-20

If the reader is not completely new to Struts, this book with the examples zipped with the Struts framework might be enough to develop a Struts based application.

The book has two main parts:

Intro to the usage of Struts and its most important components. (35 pages)
This part is quite good in relation to its size. The Validator framework could get more space.

Tag Reference. (85 pages)
Includes many short examples. Tiles are also included.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent value 4.5 stars.......2004-06-07

Covers all of the bare bones and some of the guts of the topic in 125 pages. Not for complete beginners, but if youve read the limited docs on the web then this is the next step. Covers web and config xml in just enough detail, explains, form beans, beans in general, actions validation. The tag reference is 70/125 pages which makes sense as this so important to a struts app. Does justice to the html and logic tags. Great size for the desk or train. More books should be in this cut down format - it stops the authors rambling and gets to the point. for USD-10 you cant go wrong. Well edited - no mistakes. I got this with another (not as good but bigger) struts book and the two complement quite well. Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars indespensable.......2004-05-03

I have at least four separate struts books, and this is the one I keep turning to whenever I have a question about syntax or properties. It lists them all, starting each tag libraries section with a description of common attributes. It then goes into the separate tags in each library and their specific attributes, with example usage. The tag references I've seen in other books were no where near as complete as what is inside this one.

This book also includes notes on the usage of different action types, action forms, etc. All in all, an excellent reference.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2004-02-19

I am new to struts and was very happy with how easy this book is to find information quickly in.

4 out of 5 stars Very good reference once you know the basics..........2004-01-18

Review
I recently worked my way through a Struts tutorial and really liked the approach for building web applications. However, the Struts architecture has a lot of configuration files and standard components that are interrelated when building an application. It's difficult to keep all the pieces in the right place in your mind as you're first coding with Struts. This is where the Jakarta Struts Pocket Guide comes into play.

The authors use a straightforward, documentation style of writing to give you just the core information on all the pieces that make up the Struts architecture. There's no conversational instruction on how to use or how to learn Struts. It is assumed you have the basic knowledge and need to understand the details of each piece. The format usually shows a piece of Java or XML code, explains what that piece does, and then documents each parameter that comes into play. So instead of wading through 50 pages of a book to figure out the web.xml file, you can find the core information here in six pages. You may need additional resources if you want to learn more about a particular feature, but this book will quickly show you that the feature exists and what it is meant to do.

If you're looking to learn Struts for the first time, hold off on this book until you've gone through a learning guide of some sort (like Programming Jakarta Struts by Chuck Cavaness). You'll need that level of instruction to get up to speed on the architecture. Once you have that down, you'll be able to use the pocket guide to find answers to your day-to-day questions on how the different parts work.

Conclusion
If you have already worked your way through a Struts book or if you use Struts on a daily basis, you'll find this a valuable little guide to give you focused answers on a timely basis.

Book Description

JavaServer Pages (JSP) is harmonizing how web designers and programmers create dynamic web pages. The reason for this is simple: JSP capitalizes on the power of Java servlets to create effective, reusable web applications.JSP allows you to develop robust, powerful web content, and the best part is that you're not required to be a hard-core Java programmer. JavaServer Pages Pocket Reference is the perfect companion volume to O'Reilly's best-selling JavaServer Pages, also by Hans Bergsten. This book provides detailed coverage of JSP syntax and processing, directive elements, standard action elements, scripting elements, implicit objects, custom actions, tag library description creation, and WARs.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what is says it is - a great JSP reference.......2001-09-24

When I'm doing JSP, I can never remember the attributes for the various tags, nor exactly what class the implicit objects are. This book allows me to look them up quickly without having to have a big manual on my desk. It's cheap and small, and you can find stuff quickly. I give it a 4 instead of a 5 because like many pocket references from O'Reilly, it doesn't have a sufficient cross-referenced index.

Book Description

Exotic methods refer to specific functions within general soft computing methods such as genetic algorithms, neural networks and rough sets theory. They are applied to ordinary shares for a variety of financial purposes, such as portfolio selection and optimization, classification of market states, forecasting of market states and data mining. This is in contrast to the wide spectrum of work done on exotic financial instruments, wherein advanced mathematics is used to construct financial instruments for hedging risks and for investment.

In this book, particular aspects of the general method are used to create interesting applications. For instance, genetic niching produces a family of portfolios for the trader to choose from. Support vector machines, a special form of neural networks, forecast the financial markets; such a forecast is on market states, of which there are three — uptrending, mean reverting and downtrending. A self-organizing map displays in a vivid manner the states of the market. Rough sets with a new discretization method extract information from stock prices.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I want my money back !.......2004-04-11

I hadn't read the clumsy book description, or I would have chosen another book. Now I own a booklet in which a description of three data mining methods, having been applied to finance, which is what I was looking for. The articles however, seem to have been written in a hurry, and contain just too little information to enable me (econometrician with ample statistical and programming knowledge) to apply the methods myself. Useless ! I want my money back ( d'you hear, World Scientific ? )!

    Book Description

This book presents balanced coverage of the four major areas of health law -- health care organization and finance; the obligations of health care professionals and institutions to patients; bioethics; and public health law. For each of these topics, it presents a carefully edited collection of cases, statutes, and readings. The book includes sources from English-speaking, common-law jurisdictions; continental Europe and Japan; and developing countries. Whenever possible, the readings are by authors from the countries whose laws are discussed. Also, most sources are truly comparative; that is, they analyze the laws of not just one, but of several jurisdictions.

This is not just another book about comparative health policy; rather, it focuses uniquely on comparative health law -- how law, legal systems, and legal institutions influence health care recipients, professionals, institutions, and systems.

                    Book Description

Recent droughts in Africa and elsewhere in the world, from China to Peru, have serious implications for food security and grave consequences for local and international politics. The issues do not just concern the plight of African peoples, but also our global ecological future.
Global climatic changes become manifest initially in regions that are marginal or unstable. Africa's Sahel zone is one of the most sensitive climatic regions in the world and the events that have gripped that region beginning in the 1970's were the first indicator of a significant shift in global climatic conditions.
This work aims to bring archaeology with the domain on contemporary human affairs and to forge a new methodology for coping with environmental problems from an archaeological perspective. Using the later prehistory of Africa as a comparison, the utility of this methodological strategy in interpreting culture change and assessing long-term response to current, global climatic fluctuations is examined and understood.

5 out of 5 stars Excerpt of review from M. Kassas University of Cairo.......2003-11-14

Implications with contemporary climate events (recurrent droughts in Africa) and their impacts on food security are evident. Interactions amongst climate changes, evolution of food producing systems, evolution of societal organization including mass movements in search of less hostile environment, evolution of culture, art and technology are all intertwined and complicated. The chapters of this remarkable volume dispel a good deal of the myth that relates to these socio-evolutionary topics.'

"It isn't every day a movie star steals your husband. When that day comes for Chiffon Butrell, of Cayboo Creek, South Carolina, she looks to the Bottom Dollar Girls to help her out of one fine mess. As a waitress at the local Wagon Wheel restaurant, Chiffon pegs her fortunes to a winning entry in a local video store's Be-a-Movie-Star contest. But her celluloid dreams are dashed when her baby takes sick and her husband, Lonnie -- one fine specimen of Southern manhood -- heads for the Hollywood Hills solo. On set, he turns the head of leading lady Janie-Lynn Lauren, whose siren call is Oscar caliber. Back in Cayboo Creek, Chiffon manages to lose her temper and her job in quick succession -- only to discover that Lonnie's paycheck from the Nutra-Sweet plant has been forwarded to a California address. With three kids to feed, Chiffon comes up more than a dollar short. Her good friends try their best to pitch in. But there are too few hands to lend, what with Elizabeth and her husband, Timothy, expecting their first baby any day and the rest of the Bottom Dollar Girls knee-deep in their secret -- and possibly scandalous -- plan to raise money for the Cayboo Creek Senior Center. When a slick of Wesson Oil at the Winn-Dixie gets the better of Chiffon's ankle, there's just one thing to be done -- call on estranged older sister Chenille, who hails from Bible Grove, South Carolina. A prissy, fussy spinster prone to dressing her dog, Walter, in matching plaid ""mother-son"" outfits, Chenille is everything former beauty queen Chiffon detests. Suddenly the tabloid media gets wind of Janie-Lynn and Lonnie's torrid romance, landing sleepy Cayboo Creek on the star map. Under the glare of camera lights, the sisters must put aside their longtime grievances to forge a newfound relationship. As crisis reigns, Chenille is welcomed by the Bottom Dollar Girls for her cool head and quick thinking. And when Chenille runs into a little trouble of her own, she begins to see the future in friendship. A rollicking, hilarious novel about two sisters who are each one of a kind, A Dollar Short is a delicious page-turner worth every last cent. "

5 out of 5 stars New beginnings start here in this sequel Very humorous!.......2007-05-29

This book begins with Chiffon, who has three kids and the bottom suddebly drops out of her life when Lonnie her husband, takes up with a movie star having an open affair. When Chiffon goes to the airport to meet Lonnie after a supposed "business trip," he is nowhere in sight. In disbelief, Chiffon has no choice but to return home with the bewildered kids, and finds a message on her machine from Lonnie that he is in love with someone else who's a hot actress, and he wants a divorce immediately.

And that is not the only thing wrong either. Chiffon has lost her job as a waitress at the Chat N' Chew after all these years, so now she is really up a creek for money and can hardly feed her kids without her snotty mother's help as she makes Chiffon feel more like a failure than ever.

Chenille, Chiffon's sister is having her own terrible problems with her own job as a schoolteacher for slow learners. Chenille's teacher assistant, who disapproves of everything about Chenille's classroom discipline threatens one of the students with a machete. Chenille gets the blame though for letting that happen, and is immediately fired from that high school for good. So she sinks deep into depression, not getting out of bed until her mother calls and pleads with Chenille to please come up to North Carolina to help Chiffon as she has broken her ankle and needs help with everything. So Chenille packs up her mutt Walter, and away she goes. She just knows things will get testy, as she has never been able to get along with her family, much less her sister before. There was a lot of sibling rivalry between them which the two never overcame.

Once Chenille arrives there, she gets the house in order. She settles in, and as time marches on, the two sisters become closer. Chenille meets a man, Drake who is a veternarian and he comes on to her immediately. But Chiffon doesn't like him, and sees in him a smooth character that would hurt Chenille deeply. Chenille doesn't listen to her sister's concerns, even as Drake wants to marry her in a hurry in Rome. She begins to suspect the kind of person he is when going through his apartment and finding clues to hidden secrets.

Garnell is a plain ordinary man that is down to earth and has always liked Chenille. However, it takes awhile and a bad experience with Drake before she sees this.

Lonnie reappears, and Chiffon is a big sucker and falls for his tactics once again.

Elizabeth, a character in the last book is happily married to Tim Hollingsowrth and had her first baby Glenda. She continues to help the Dollar Emporium grow in their business by leaps and bounds.

I am anxious to read the next one, Dollar Daze. This book made me laugh my head off in many places. Some of the other ladies are quite eccentric.

Who wouldn't love these books? Full of hilarious moments, you will read it one sitting. We have two sisters who haven't had the best relationship. When Chiffon wins a trip to Hollywood, she has purchased a new Kmart outfit, all ready to go. At the last minute, her youngest has a fever, and so she tells her husband to go ahead. Her husband Lonnie hasn't always treated her right, cheating on her and taking advantage of her. She finds out from the TV of all places that her husband is shacking up with Jay-Li. The media gets ahold of this story and has a field day with it. Chenille, Chiffon's sister, has never married and is a school teacher. Her teaching assistant thinks she has the green light to help discipline the children, wields a plastic machete, to scare the children. Chenille has been let go from her job because the assistant said she told her to do whatever was necessary to keep the children in line. Well Chiffon is stuck with her and Lonnie's three children, and has an accident in the grocery store after seeing tabloids with Lonnie and Jay-Li all over, spraining her ankle. Their mother is going to Europe and asks Chenille to assist Chiffon. Together they tackle the world, each ending up a little richer in love and life. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I adored A Dollar Short and its lovable heroine, Chiffon Butrell! It is a hilarious southern romp, and once you start reading it, you will not be able to put it down until the very last page.

I love the kooky girls in this series and this one adds Chiffon's sister, Chenille. Chenille comes to town toting her terrier, Walter and causes quite a stir. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
