Customer Reviews:
Joe's C's review of JP:OG.......2003-05-18
This is a great strategy guide. Most Prima guides for games really [smell.] This one doesn't. It gives specific details about all the dinosaurs. It gives you the lowdown on all the missions. It also gives effective parkbuilding strategies. Reading this was almost as fun as playing the game. But about the game, that's another story...

Careful - this is a very basic overview.......2001-08-20
This book is written for the reader who has little or no experience in currencies and currency risk. The information provided is very basic, and not of use to anyone wanting to get more than a superficial understanding of the subject. The title is "Introduction", but I still think it is (only) 100 pages of generalities, not worth the $... I paid!

Book Description
"A valuable resource for scholars and students of Judaic, Israel, Middle Eastern, and women's studies. There is no single volume currently available that represents such a broad range of historical, political, religious, and cultural approaches to Israeli women. This book will fill that gap for years to come!"Judith R. Baskin, editor of Jewish Women in Historical Perspective
"Esther Fuchs is a superb scholar who has created a must-read for academics and the general public alike. Broad public interest in Israel and the Middle East will certainly make this collection of essays on Israeli women a widely-read and important volume."Susannah Heschel, Eli Black Associate Professor of Jewish Studies, Dartmouth College
Israeli women do not enjoy the equality, status, and power often attributed to them by the media and popular culture. Despite significant achievements and progress, as a whole they continue to earn less than their male counterparts, are less visible and influential in the political arena, do not share equal responsibilities or privileges in the military, have unequal rights and freedoms in family life and law, and are less influential in shaping the nation's self image and cultural orientation.
Bringing together classic essays by leading scholars of Israeli culture, this reader exposes the hidden causes of ongoing discrimination and links the restrictions that Israeli women experience to deeply entrenched structures, including colonial legacies, religious traditions, capitalism, nationalism, and ongoing political conflict. In contrast, the essays also explore how women act creatively to affect social change and shape public discourse in less ostensible ways.
Providing balanced perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities, this comprehensive reader reflects both an emerging consensus and exciting diversity in the field. It is the definitive text for courses in Israeli women's studies.

Book Description
German jurist and legal theorist Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) significantly influenced Western political and legal thinking in the last century, yet his life and work have also stirred considerable controversy. While his ideas have been used and diffused by prominent philosophers on both the left and the right, such as Jürgen Habermas and Leo Strauss, his Nazi-era past, especially his active efforts to remove Jewish influence from German law, has cast a cloud over his life and oeuvre. Still, his many supporters have generally been successful in claiming that Schmitt's was an "antisemitism of opportunity," a temporary affectation to gain favor with the Nazis.
In Carl Schmitt and the Jews, available in English for the first time, historian Raphael Gross vigorously repudiates this "opportunism thesis." Through a reading of Schmitt's corpus, some of which became available only after his death, Gross highlights the importance of the "Jewish Question" on the breadth of Schmitt's work. According to Gross, Schmitt's antisemitism was at the core of his work—before, during, and after the Nazi era. His influential polarities of "friend and foe," "law and nomos," "behemoth and Leviathan," and "ketechon and Antichrist" emerge from a conceptual template in which "the Jew" is defined as adversary, undermining the Christian order with secularization. The presence of this template at the heart of Schmitt's work, Gross contends, calls for a major reassessment of Schmitt's role within contemporary cultural and legal theory.

Book Description
The vadose zone is the region between ground level and the upper limits of soil fully saturated with water. Hydrology in the zone is complex: nonlinear physical, chemical, and biological interactions all affect the transfer of heat, mass, and momentum between the atmosphere and the water table. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to vadose zone hydrology, bringing together insights from soil science, hydrology, biology, chemistry, physics, and instrumentation design. The chapters present state-of-the-art research, focusing on new frontiers in theory, experiment, and management of soils. The collection addresses the full range of processes, from the pore-scale to field and landscape scales.
Book Description
Modern technology depends on materials with precisely controlled properties. Ion beams are an excellent way to achieve controlled modification of surface and near-surface regions. In every integrated circuit production line, for example, there are ion implantation systems. In addition to integrated circuit technology, ion beams can modify the mechanical, tribological, and chemical properties of metal, intermetallic, and ceramic materials without altering their bulk properties. Ion-solid interactions are the foundation that underlies the broad application of ion beams to the modification of materials. This text covers the fundamentals and applications of ion-solid interactions, and is aimed at graduate students and researchers interested in electronic devices, surface engineering, reactor and nuclear engineering, and materials science issues associated with metastable phase synthesis.

Book Description
Returning to his avant-punk style introduced in the international cult hit, SATAN BURGER, Carlton Mellick III takes us on a journey into an absurd afterlife called PUNK LAND: the punk version of Heaven. The story follows Goblin, a deformed young hermit who is perfectly happy haunting an abandoned gatehouse far outside of civilization with his pet dildo, Frog Strips, until two strangers named Nan and Mortician arrive at his doorstep with a crazy story that turns his quiet post-life existence upside-down. Goblin soon finds himself mixed up in a war between corporate punks and traditional punks that he really couldn't care less about. But without the help of Goblin, Mortician's sperm, and a blue-mohawked female assassin named Shark Girl, the utopian anarchy in Punk Land will surely be lost.
Featuring cameos by famous punk icons and cartoonish illustrations in the tradition of Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions." This Bizarro novel is Carlton Mellick III's most fun and hilarious book to date.
Customer Reviews:
Are you REALLY punk enough to get in?.......2007-09-20
Imagine a place which exists somewhere between Heaven and hell, a land where punks have erected their own afterlife rather than try to get along in Heaven. Goblin is a guard who works at the main gate of Punk Land, and yet, no one has visited the security station or entered Punk Land in some time. So Goblin is surprised to find two people who arrive not through the gate, but from within Punk Land itself. And they have many more shocking revelations which Goblin decides must be put before the Punk Council.
During the trip through Punk Land, Goblin begins to understand that something has gone horribly wrong, and instead of anarchy, Punk Land is being ruled by corporate goons.
Then with the entry of Shark Girl into the story, the real horror show begins. Between Shark Girl and the actions of the Punk Council, this book makes the afterlife seem very unpleasant. Because once you accept that you can feel pain in the afterlife, the concept of being eternally shredded on a giant metal grater is pretty gruesome. And this is just one of the nasty surprises waiting for you in this book. If you're looking for a good Bizarro book with a lot of gore and laughs in equal portions, I'd recommend this book.
I hope that I would be refused admission.......2007-08-19
Setting: When most people die, many organized religions say that the souls go to Heaven or Hell, depending upon how well they have lived their lives. In this novel, we met Goblin, a lonely punker who died after his mentally unstable girlfriend pushed him into the path of an oncoming bus. Goblin had been enough of a good boy to earn a trip Upstairs. However, he is disappointed because: passing through the Pearly Gates greatly distorts one's appearance, and Goblin ends up with a spiky flesh Mohawk and spine-like fleshy protuberances along his side; Heaven turns out to be a boring place, like an enormous shopping mall, but with less color; there are no erotic toys in Heaven, and Goblin is fascinated with artificial phalluses. He eventually discovers that one artificial phallus was given a soul, and resides in Heaven. He adopts it, calls it "Frog Strips", and treats it like his baby. Goblin eventually leaves Heaven and ends up in Punk Land, which is the alternative Afterlife for punk rockers and similar souls. Goblin becomes the Gatekeeper for Punk Land, because he understands punkitude better than anyone else. Punk Land, by the way, has adopted Sid Vicious as its deity.
Cast of the story: You already know about Goblin, but I'll add that he's actually somewhat geeky about rigidly adhering to the official definition of punkitude. Goblin's insistence that there is a proper and official way to be punk strikes me as farcical or satirical, as does the back that the anarchy of Punk Land has a governing Council. Goblin's picture is on the back cover of the book.
Shark Girl is an assassin by trade. She has a very tall Mohawk, that is bluish-purple in color. She has a picture on the book-cover, in which she is topless, and is armed with a pistol. She also has a small picture on the back cover.
Nan is a semi-punk girl who ends up in Punk Land, by mysterious means. She has her hair shaved very short, and looks like a teenage boy. Her picture is on the back cover of the book.
Mort "Mortician" is another visitor to Punk Land, who does not really seem to fit. His picture is on the back cover. He does not look punk at all, to me.
Story: The arrival of Mort and Nan begins shaking things up in Goblin's Afterlife. You see, they somehow arrived not through the one-and-only Gate to Punk Land, and they might not even be dead! The search for answers to how those two got in, becomes part of figuring out what the heck is happening in Punk Land. Apparently, the anarchy in Punk Land, that is supposed to create a harmonious alternative-Utopia, is not working too well. It seems that the "corporate punks" and the "traditional punks" (Uh, that would be an oxymoron, wouldn't it?) are at war, with the fate of Punk Land hanging in the balance. Poor Goblin gets all mixed up in that conflict, and the only way Punk Land can be saved, is with the help of Shark Girl, plus a sperm donation from Mortician.
Are you confused? Good! I certainly was, and this review is very difficult to write. As I read this book, I kept wanting to either autoclave it, incinerate it, or read it all the way to the end. I chose the most painful option. In all fairness, I found this to be a creative, original tale, and the author does know how to spin a compelling yarn. Carlton Mellick III was even creative with how the story was put together, with scenes and acts, instead of chapters and parts, plus the story periodically has drawings and black-and-white photographs interspersed.
Howsoever, the entire book seems very forced, as if it's motto were: "I'm going to find as many ways to shock you as I can, and anything that is not shocking and potentially offensive, will be left out." Examples:
The girl on the cover not only has a purple Mohawk, but is topless.
The book is dedicated to "this guy", followed by a picture of an overweight, unshaven guy guzzling a beer.
There is a page of juvenile drawings, showing Goblin's imaginings of what he'd like to be able to squirt out of Frog Strip's "pee-hole" including Watermelon Gatorade.
When a person tries, intensely and unremittingly, to shock and/or insult someone, I wonder whether the would-be offender might not have much else going for him or her, and being offensive is the only skill possessed. This book strikes me the same way, except there is a good story buried beneath the rubble of all that forced attempted offensiveness, with some interesting characters populating it.
One other point is that the anarchy of Punk Land (the fictional place, not the book) reminded me of Robert Heinlein's stories that mention Coventry. His version of Coventry is a walled-off territory, where criminals are sent, to do as they will. The result is diverse, and often extreme sects developing, within Coventry, with internecine conflict aplenty.
In the end, I did not know if Punk Land, the novel, was supposed to be a Punk Manifesto, an ode to punkitude, a satirical lampooning of punkdom, or just a very unusual story using punk as one of its themes. By the way, if you are not sure what "punk" means, you will not learn it by reading this book. I ended up looking it up on the Internet, to get a clearer idea of what Punk Land might be. What I found was that it appears that the main definition of punk is that it is a subculture, consisting of the a group of sub-subcultures that are so diverse that a definition of the overall punk subculture remains quite elusive. And, maybe that is exactly why Punk Land is as strange a book as it is.
My only other reading experience with Carlton Mellick III was the dream-like, possibly nightmarish, but near-poetic Sea of the Patchwork Cats (Avant Punk Book Club), that I liked much more than Punk Land.
Even better than Satan Burger.......2007-01-30
Satan Burger is one of my favorite books, but Punk Land is even better than that. It has the characters Nan and Mortician from Satan Burger. It takes place soon after the events that took place in the first book. I recommend reading Satan Burger first but Punk Land is such a better book and is written in a more entertaining style. There are drawings in it like the ones from Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions. The book is about a heaven for punks, which was briefly talked about in Satan Burger. There is a character named Goblin who is obsessed with dildos. He also has a pet dildo that is alive. He meets Nan and Mortician and then they explore Punk Land. Punk Land has pizza cats which are pieces of pizza that have legs and walk around, babies that live in the sewers, shark people, the midget olypmics, and a war between corporate punks and traditional punks.
There is a lot of great stuff in this book. It isn't just for fans of punk. Actually, if you take punk too seriously you won't like it. The author makes fun of punk a lot, because he is or was a punk and can see the humor in it. For the most part this book is a horror fantasy satire.
If you've liked Carlton Mellick III books in the past this will be your new favorite.
Ho hum.......2006-09-02
I couldn'get get past the first thirty pages. The idea was neat, but the begining drags on and on. As well it seem more like a treatise on why punk sucks now and the author knows why and is waaaay cooler. Snoresville.
Another satirical and entertaining journey from Mellick, this time through Punk Heaven.......2006-08-23
Carlton Mellick III is a very entertaining author, taking the base of the horror genre and twisting it with satire, adding healthy portions of belly laughs, and some of the grossest scenarios worthy of Edward Lee.
'Punk Land' is about a man once named Cal Corncob who dies and goes to heaven, where his new name is Goblin. Unfortunately, entering heaven causes massive deformities. Goblin had been a quiet man with an abnormal dild0 fetish, collecting them for display on his ping-pong table. He didn't use them except for his obsessive/compulsive disorder of throwing them at people, which he cannot control in heaven either.
From regular heaven, Goblin travels to a new, recently developed corner of the divine afterlife called Punk Land, created by and presided over by Sid Vicious. Goblin still has few friends, even in heaven, but when Punk Land begins to deteriorate, Goblin meets Shark Girl, Nan, and Mortician. Too many strange rules are popping up on the entry-forms for Punk Land, and its up to Goblin and Shark Girl to get to the bottom of the clean-cut mess and return Punk Land to its anarchistic ways.
The book is sprinkled with some very hilarious cartoons, drawings, pictures, lists, and tidbits of information, like what can and cannot be done with the Robot Strippers. Check out the back of the book for information on beautiful cover model Darenzia.
Mellick is the master of horror satire and parody. Although I prefer his other works, like 'Ocean Of Lard', 'Sea Of Patchwork Cats', and 'The Menstruating Mall', 'Punk Land' is still a great, light read if you want something squishy and disgusting in a tongue-in-cheek tale. Enjoy!

Book Description
In the pages of The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Esquire, New York, Maxim, and GQ, Mark Jacobson has carried on in the tradition of such titans as Joe Mitchell, A. J. Liebling, Jimmy Breslin, and Pete Hamill as one of New York City's finest journalistic provocateurs. Now he collects the best of his years in Teenage Hipster in the Modern World.
Jacobson has been witness to a decidedly different sort of history. His "beats" range far and wide, delving into the realms of politics, sports, and celebrity in pieces on such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Julius Erving, Chuck Berry, Pam Grier (in her Scream, Blacula, Scream days), Martin Scorsese, and many others. But for Jacobson, New York City has always been Topic Number One. Jacobson tells the story of the city in his classic essays on the beginnings of punk rock back in the times of "pregentrification" to the heart-wrenching days of 9/11.
With a foreword from best-selling author Richard Price, Teenage Hipster in the Modern World is a hilarious and poignant snapshot of a city, a generation, and a man who wonders how he went from hanging out at CBGB to being an AARP card-holding father of three.

Praise With Caveat.......2005-08-15
I don't know that I trust myself to review this book. It has become something like a bible for me. I crack it open for inspiration to write, or to see things from a new perspective. Like any retrospective, it judges the life work of a man, not just a brief moment of time. That said, Jacobson's writing is crisp and fresh throughout. It is hard to pinpoint when he is the best; because he is always the best. Each essay is perfect. Some scrape the edges of beyond perfection, where distinctions fall away and confusion sets in. Where one tries to process exactly how he recording all this brilliant information. This is the modern world I want to live in. Where gangsters, pimps, movie stars and holy men coexist. Where there is place for both the Dali Lama and Pam Grier. This is the world Jacobson lives in, and for a brief period of time, as you read this book, you live in it as well. Luckily, it isn't posthumous, so you can read his essays as they come out regularly. Maybe he is a journalist's journalist. Or a writer's writer. But he is my favorite journalist, and perhaps, my favorite writer. So lest I run from the realm of hero-worship into that of deification (and idol-worship) let me stop here. Read this book. You won't regret it.
