5 out of 5 stars Your Thinking + This book = Accomplishment/Satisfaction.......2002-09-29

This is the most practical book I have seen (without the word "Practical" in the title). I am a student who wants to setup a network in my dorm room. Here is what I did:

My PCs are in the school network, only one of which is known to the school servers. By reading chap 1-3, I activated ip_forwarding feature of kernel( >= 2.2.x->the book came out around this time). Doesn't work. I think about the situation. My PCs(in my network) see the outside servers but school servers don't see me. Answer: ip_masquerading->open up the packets of PCs inside the network, replacing the address with my router address(which outsiders know) and send them out. Perfect! I love linux. Ip_masquerading is explained in chap4 or Erbium->extranet router. All of these accomplish by reading about 100 pages.
The following chapters deal with WAN routers(I can't tell you practical aspect since I don't have WAN but I will one day).
This line is for beginners: so you feel worry about not understanding about networks?->chap 1-2 explains about all necessary basics to set up the router such as ip subnets/address, how to load/compile driver into the kernel, etc.
For those who are looking for WAN, here is a quote from the book: "I have been a longtime user of Sangoma cards, and enjoyed working with them so much that I took over the Debian package of their driver utility software(called wanpipe)."->pg 130.

To see whether it suits your needs, here are the chapters:
1)Routing Building Blocks

2)Ip, Ethernet, and Telephony Basics
3)Silicon-Lan Router
4)Erbium-Extranet Router
5)Zinc-Frame Relay Router
6)Oxygen-Internet Router
7)Californium-Satellite Office Router
8)Hafnium-Internet Services Router

Note: this book doesn't describe the installation (you are not reading this if you don't know installation).

This book/Mr. Mancill took me/my confidence in linux to the next level.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible.......2002-02-14

Hands on, good book for network admins.
Linux is an excelent router and this book shows why.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in networking.
It exposes a lot of the myths and secrets of networking in a very readable fashion.
My #1 most useful book.

5 out of 5 stars The Networking Book.......2002-02-05

Excellent introduction. Topics well covered. Explanations straightforward. Logical. If you need a generic router book this is it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-05-23

This book guided me from an almost nil knowledge level on linux routers to very competent. The spectrum of covered topics is fantastic and I also found the appendix extremely useful. Tony has an easy writing style to follow and I look forward to an advanced book on linux routing?

4 out of 5 stars An excellent basis for a series of lab exercises.......2001-02-02

An excellent book on using Linix to build routers. It provides a very through description of how to use ipchains in conjunction with forwarding, masquarading, accounting, etc.

The book is organized around chapters which describe how to build: a LAN router,an extranet router, a frame relay router, an internet router, a satellite office router, and an internet services router.

The book would make an excellent basis for a series of lab exercises.

Another excellent feature is appendix C, which describes how one can use VMware to experiment with virtual network configurations.

Students (and instructors) should be aware that there are some minor typos in the text and diagrams - for example figure C.1 has two subnets labelled "A", the righthand one should be "B".

4 out of 5 stars Very useful in helping me plan my 401(k).......2000-06-19

Written for investing novices, this book explains and clarifies the details of investing in a 401(k) plan. It was very useful when I set up my 401(k) account for the first time, and has subsequently come in handy as a reference guide when questions arose.

My only small complaint is that at times the material was "dumbed down" a little too much, and the author used generalizations rather than delve into some of the specifics of investing for retirement.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and easy to understand.......1999-08-12

I usually throw away the material from my human resource department about benefits because it's so difficult to understand. On the other hand, this book really helped me to decide how much money I should be contributing to my 401(k) plan and how to choose my allocations. This is a useful book for all employees with 401(k) plans.

Jo Ann Brown has made a masterpiece. Reading on a subject that everyone needs to know... How to make money!!! - she has made the process easy. Mrs. Brown includes exercises within the book which are excellent tools to get you started. Personally, I think that Mrs. Brown just wants the best for everyone, that's why she wrote this book... Simple, Easy, and To the point. Unlike most books or even the company that you work for, her message is clearly written and easy to follow. The company you work for directly controls your 401K program, but you can stay engaged and become your own active manager of your money. Listen to her - she KNOWS what she is talking about!!

        Book Description

This book provides the first comprehensive evaluation of Britain’s food laws from the 1860s to 1930s and the first analysis of the Victorian anti-adulteration legislation in 25 years. The book brings important historical perspectives to the pressing contemporary debate about food safety and the most appropriate forms of regulation by indicating that government policy historically has been shaped by competing business and consumer-protectionist pressures.

                        Book Description

Petrologists regard enclaves (mafic inclusions, xenoliths,...) as essential for understanding the genesis and evolution of igneous rocks, in particular, the petrology of granitoids. This volume is a collection of forty papers which represent an up to date inventory and an open discussion of the main concepts proposed for the origin and evolution of enclaves in igneous rocks. The contributors are from Australia, China, Japan, USA, USSR and Europe.

In the first part of the volume, various types of enclaves are investigated in granitoids of different natures and ages, emplaced in contrasted tectonic environments. Some of these granitoids are from reference areas such as the Lachlan Fold Belt, Australia, the Massif Central, France, and the Sierra Nevada, California. Enclaves from volcanic rocks of Japan and France are also included. The second part begins with a discussion of the macroscopic and microscopic features, textures, mineralogy and chemistry (major, trace elements and isotopes) of enclaves and the host granitoids. Various and often contrasting models including the restite model are then proposed for the genesis and evolution of enclaves and the host granitoids. The favored magma mixing model is detailed through the full set of petrologic tools including laboratory experiments.

The extensive bibliography included refers to most papers published on enclaves in the last twenty years.

                          Book Description

Eminent Harvard astrophysicist David Layzer offers readers a unified theory of natural order and its origins, from the permanence, stability, and orderliness of sub-atomic particles to the evolution of the human mind. Cosmogenesis provides the first extended account of a controversial theory that connects quantum mechanics with the second law of thermodynamics, and presents novel resolutions of longstanding paradoxes in these theories, such as those of Schroedinger's cat and the arrow of time. Layzer's main concerns in the second half of the book are with the philosophical issues surrounding science. He develops a highly original reconciliation of the conflict between traditional scientific determinism and the intuitive notion of individual freedom. He argues that although the elementary processes underlying biological evolution and human development are governed by physical laws, they are nevertheless genuinely creative and unpredictable.

                              5 out of 5 stars Simply enjoyable........2005-02-11

This was my first Michael Malone book and I loved it. I'm not even going to get into reviewing the story, I'll just say that it was a fun book to read. I'd put it up there with all the "great coming of age novels" I've read. In fact if I had to choose between Catcher in the Rye, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, On the Road, and The Delectable Mountains.... I'd choose this book.

The characters are engaging, the story is truely American and Moore keeps you entertained with all the twists and turns. Well woth reading.

                              3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2003-08-04

I recently moved to Colorado (and am living about an hour where this book took place) and was excited to start reading just based on the things we'd "have in common"! But sadly, I wasnt crazy about the author's writing style. He didnt really get you "close" to what they were feeling. He gave the charachters quite interesting personalities...but I think it takes more than that. I really wanted to get to know them. I kept reading along, hoping the storyline and plot would come to a climax or become somewhat exciting...but really when you read book jackete description, well, it doesnt get much more indepth that that. I grew up in the 80s so I didnt relate to this author's accounts of early-70s history. Besides he used them so sparingly that they never seemed to quite flow with the story as a whole, and almost felt like the author was "name-dropping," but with historical facts.

I gave the book three stars, because it wasnt horrible, I just think it takes the right reader to appreciate it. If you really like getting to know characters and solid story lines this isnt the book for you. The cover looked really cool (I'm an artist, okay) which is what first caught my eye. Hey, Kudos on the book cover.

5 out of 5 stars Everything comes around again.......2003-02-23

Mrs. Amanda Thurston stands out as one of my all time favorite characters. Her stoic love and strength allows the reader to enjoy the craziness of the other characters as they swirl around her.

This book is a kick to read with the quirkiness from the 1970's shining through, yet it is written against the background of the shootings of President and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King and the war in VietNam. The characters in the book are searching how to make a life in the face of such violence and national upheaval. The Chapter "The Beginning of a Longer Journey" could have been written in 2003 instead of 1976. Not much progress made at all since then.

4 out of 5 stars The Wonderful Michael Malone.......2002-11-06

Now that Michael Malone's books are finally becoming available again, you'll want to add this one to your collection. As usual, the characters are wonderfully off-beat and no one does characterization quite like Michael Malone. Not as great as "Handling Sin" but still not to be missed.
