Macromedia's FreeHand version 10 features tools that make other illustration packages jealous, but learning to use it without guidance can be daunting. The FreeHand 10 Visual QuickStart Guide from Peachpit Press presents an easy approach to mastering it, while taking the reader beyond the basics.
Thirty-two chapters discuss virtually every important feature and aspect of FreeHand, beginning with installation and the interface, through document handling (and using multiple pages), to working with text and drawing elements. FreeHand is an extremely flexible and capable application, and each chapter reflects this. The three chapters on working with text ("Basic Text," "Text Tools," and "Text Effects") are perhaps the most valuable in the book, but only until you get to the chapters on automating FreeHand, using the "Xtra" tools, or the two chapters on understanding printing. Preparing files for professional output on an imagesetter is a whole chapter in itself.
FreeHand is more than just a tool for creating printed documents. Chapters 28 and 29 detail FreeHand's Web features--exporting as HTML, embedding links, using Web-safe colors, and creating Flash animations using FreeHand.
For new users, Peachpit's Visual QuickStart series can't be beat; concisely written, lavishly illustrated, designed to get the reader from novice to proficient user in as little time as possible, these books have a proven track record. The FreeHand 10 Visual QuickStart Guide continues this streak, offering tremendous value for the money. --Mike Caputo

Customer Reviews:
Especially for novice computer users.......2003-01-10
Macromedia FreeHand 10 For Windows And Macintosh by Sandee Cohen is the latest in the superbly presented "Visual Quickstart" guidebook series and swiftly teaches the basics of Macromedia FreeHand computer applications by relying heavily on screenshots and pictures rather than extensive verbal explanations. A marvelous reference for learning Freehand quickly and easily, and enhanced with a special chapter concerning Flash animations, Macromedia FreeHand 10 For Windows And Macintosh is very highly recommended, especially for novice computer users who tire of puzzling their way through excessively long textual descriptions.
What did you expect?.......2002-05-13
I have not been disappointed with any visual quickstart guide. This was the first one I purchased and it's one of my favorites. This teaches you blends, paths, all the basics, and even flash animations!
For 13 bucks, I haven't seen a better deal.
Freehand 10 VSG.......2002-05-10
The Freehand 10 Visual Quickstart Guide is probably an excellent choice for beginners and of some use to long time Freehand users.
Most questions are quickly answered, although information on some of the new features is weak.
Simple.......2002-01-07
Basic, but shows you that Freehand is almost as good as Illustrator without the cool filters, but with direct Flash support (just copy your Freehand work and paste it in flash and bling bling). Some nice features with text and some good masking tips, but for someone who doesn't know much, and is looking for a no-nonsense book at a nice price.

Book Description
This book is intended to show ways to successful cooperation. Going beyond M&A, it demonstrates how economical ties and personal behaviour can positively influence our international relations. The value to M&A professionals will be generated through better understanding the views from the other side of the Atlantic, through new M&A insights from other industries and from experts working in consulting and finance. Thus, it is also of high value to all those working on partnerships between the USA or Germany and any other country.
The book deals with many different aspects, starting from overall strategies, and ending up with lessons learnt from the special cases. Reflecting behavioural, economic or legal aspects, there are articles showing one side only to work out country or industry specifics and others comparing the nationally different systems and surroundings.

Book Description
This collection of essays, the result of a John Marshall Symposium held in conjunction with the state of West Virginia's celebration of the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, examines the contributions of John Marshall and the early Supreme Court from a variety of political and methodological perspectives that have been encouraged by current approaches to constitutional theory and history. It fills a gap in analysis of the constitutional foundations laid by the Marshall Court. It reflects the continuities and changes that have transpired in legal scholarship and political philosophy over the last three decades. Divided into analyses of Marshall's legal decisions, his political philosophy, and his methods of legal interpretation, the essays represent a strong and healthy diversity of opinion on Marshall's contribution to American political and legal development. The essays consider the question of how Marshall's judicial reasoning can be best applied to the continuing process of interpreting the Constitution. Marshall's contributions thus become the starting point for an exercise in political engagement. While often celebrating Marshall's achievements, the contributors attempt to move beyond mere celebration toward a critical analysis of constitutional meaning and political philosophy. Legal scholars and historians alike will welcome this cogent collection and the insight it provides into the early development of constitutional thought and interpretation.

Book Description
Conservation biology has emerged as one of the most important areas of ecology; using concepts from traditional resource management and modern population biology to preserve biological diversity. In order to really understand the problems of decreasing diversity and the solutions to maintaining it, the attention of ecologists must be focussed on larger spatial and temporal scales than they are traditionally used to. The book discusses methods and statistical techniques that can be used to analyze spatial patterns in geographic populations. These techniques incorporate ideas from fractal geometry to develop measures of geographic range fragmentation, and can be used to ask questions regarding the conservation of biodiversity.

Book Description
This is a thought-provoking book. Mirman is a crusader for the advancement of a no-nonsense approach to physics. He does not request your complete agreement, but your willingness to think, which is good. I enjoyed the ride.
David J. Santos, Mathematical Reviews
In-depth analysis of the necessity for quantum mechanics and for its properties. All are (easily) understandable and unavoidable. Geometry, group theory and consistency require wavefunctions (group basis vectors) and that nature be probabilistic. Absolute values for experiments follow. Probability is defined. Reasons for confusion and misunderstandings are analyzed; much are based on misuse of (what is often not) language. These are extirpated. It is shown why (not only) the Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen paradox, uncertainty principles, the vacuum, are so thoroughly misunderstood. Quantum mechanics is local (with no spookiness) and requires the vacuum be empty. Reality is mathematical.

Book Description
When mystery author Maggie Kelly heads across the pond for a movie shootaccompanied by her once-fictional, now all-too-real (not to mention sexy) hero, Alexandre, Viscount Saint Justshe can only hope for a jolly good time. And that's exactly what she getsif "jolly good" is Britspeak for "totally crazy"
We are not amused
Don't get me wrongthere was plenty to laugh about when we first arrived in Merry Olde England to watch one of my novels being shot as a major motion picture. Alex was delighted with the location (a seventeeth-century manor house), but horrified with the surfer-dude mimbo playing him. I, personally, found the situation hilarious
then the leading lady started rubbing up against "my" hero, leaving me no choice but to start a little flirtation of my own with the lord of the manor's nephew. It was all very Regency House Party until the scriptwriter showed up
dead.
Lights, camera
action! No, not that kind of action. Well, maybe a little
Okay, so things are suddenly getting hot and heavy between Alex and meand our timing is atrocious as usual, what with the murder and mayhem. Suspects? Don't get me started. There's Mr. Contemptuous Director, Ms. Man-Crazy Production Assistant, Mr. Fancy Pants English Actor, Ms. Diva Leading Lady, and
yours truly. Yep, I was seen arguing with the victim right before his unfortunate demise, so I am, as the Brits would say, in a bit of a pickle
It was a dark and stormy night... No, seriously. Some truly nasty English weather has flooded the property, cutting off the power as well as access to the roads. Plus, someone's stolen all the cell phones. Oh, there's also that second body we just found. And did I mention the ghost? Mm-hmmthe place is haunted. You know, it wasn't too long ago that a scenario like this would have had me reaching for a cigarette. Now, it just has me reaching for Alex

High Heels & Homicide.......2006-04-24
Maggie has written a series of books, the Saint Just Mysteries, one of which is now being made into a TV movie. Alexandre Blake, the Viscount Saint Just, is the main character in her books and Sterling Balder is his sidekick. Somehow they have come to life and are currently residing in her apartment building in New York City.
Maggie, Alex and Sterling head to London where the movie is being filmed. Arriving at the movie set, a manor that has been chosen for the filming, they meet the cast and crew. Alex immediately decides that Troy, the young man playing him in the movie, needs lessons on how to be an English gentleman. Perry will be playing Sterling and he decides that gluing himself to the real Sterling will help him get into character. The screen writer is a brown nose, the director is annoyed, no one is impressed with Maggie even though she wrote the book, and everyone else is just complaining and stomping around waiting for the rain to stop. Maggie decides after spending some time with the colorful lot, that once the rain stops she, Alex and Sterling are going back home and getting away from this disaster.
Alex is Maggie's dream man and he is trying to get her to admit it, but Maggie is afraid she will lose him, along with her heart, if he ever returns from wherever it is he came from.
Things get even more bizarre when someone is murdered and everyone is a suspect. The rain has caused a flood and has made it impossible to leave, so true to his characters form, Alex intends to solve the crime with Maggie as his new sidekick and Sterling stumbling along behind them.
High Heels and Homicide is hilarious and suspenseful. The witty one-liners, the comical characters, and the fact that Alex and Sterling are from Regency England and are currently residing in the 21st century, combine to make this story great fun to read. Maggie is delightful; she is witty and down to earth. Alex is a true storybook hero; he is charming, handsome, polite, courageous, and always impeccably dressed. My only disappointment is that Maggie and Alex never even kiss. They will someday though, I just know it! I would recommend reading the previous books in this series before this one. I don't think its necessary but it would answer some questions you'll have right off the bat. High Heels and Homicide is a modern day 'who done it'. It's so entertaining you won't want to put it down!

Brilliant!.......2006-02-25
I'm a huge Kasey Michael's fan--if I see a new release with her name on it, I grab it immediately. But especially, I've devoured the Maggie series--just LOVE them--and High Heels and Homicide is no exception. As the other reviewers have said, this story largely takes place at an English country estate where Maggie's book is being made into a film, and it's one entertaining ride!
So often, Michaels' stories take on the quality of a good Shakespearean comedy, where nobody is who they seem, and they're all a little bit whacky. With the lovable cast of secondary characters who appear throughout the series--naive Stering, 12-stepping Bernie, and Maggie's agent, Tabby--the reader feels like they've come home to their flawed, but wonderful family. Speaking of family, we finally get a glimpse of Maggie's in this book, which helps to explain some of her charming idiosyncrasies.
The sexual tension heats up between Maggie and Saint Just in this book; while at the same time, she's afraid to allow herself to love him (in the event he goes *poof* one day). She also struggles with Alex's 21st century behavior, and tries to reconcile his sins by having his 19th century character atone for them--which fails miserably. So, the line between fiction and reality blurs, which makes the story even more interesting.
Michael's voice is lively and witty. The story premise is unique. The characters are unforgettable. Five stars all the way!
Interesting and Fun.......2006-02-15
Maggie Kelly writes Regency mysteries starring Alexandre, the Viscount Saint Just, and his sidekick, Sterling Balder (both of whom sprang to life in an earlier novel). Now, a production company is preparing to film a television movie based on one of the novels.
Maggie, Alex, and Sterling arrive at an English mansion to see the set. Little do they know there's a plot afoot, and someone will die. Even worse, everyone is stuck on location by a rainstorm that floods all ways out.
With suspicion falling on all the players, including Maggie, Alex is determined to flush out the murderer before too many people die. Too bad the actor playing Alex has the same idea.
In this delightful novel, Michaels has spun her twist on the Sherlock Holmes mythos. Not every author gets the chance to meet her fictional hero in the flesh, let alone deal with getting him used to the twenty-first century. Maggie appears alternately bemused, annoyed, and confused by Alex's modus operandi. She also seems bewildered in matters of love. How can she fall for someone who doesn't, or shouldn't, exist?
This is a fun read with several layers of action. While it's not the most brilliant book ever written, it's definitely worth your time if you want a light-hearted murder mystery with a little extra on the side.

she's back.......2006-01-03
Hurrah! Ms. Michaels is back with her latest HIGH HEELS AND HOMOCIDE, a St. Just/Maggie story. Michaels entertains us with a real old-fashioned whodoneit set in merry ol England. The usual cast of characters (sans the good "left-tenent") are stuck in an English manor with rain, whiners and a couple of dead bodies. Kasey Michaels weaves a pretty intriquing murder mystery with some romance between the two central characters. Of course, it helps when your main man is the living embodiment of all your "sexiest male" fantasies. I'm happy to see Maggie and St. Just back to what they do best, tease, flirt and solve mysteries.
Superior!.......2005-12-26
Author Maggie Kelly is finally getting used to fact that two of her fictional characters, Viscount Saint Just "Alex" and Sterling Balder, stepped out of her imagination and into her life - literally. Now her first novel of her famous mystery series is being made into a movie.
Maggie, Alex, and Sterling fly to England. The movie is being filmed at an old English manor house, Medwine Manor. The owner, Sir Rudy Medwine, had looked forward to seeing scantily clad American actresses. Instead, Sir Rudy has a dastardly murderer within his home.
It has done nothing but rain since the cast arrived at the manor. The inhabitants soon find themselves cut off from the outside world. The non-stop, heavy rains has caused flooding. The cellar generator is under water, so there is no power. The land lines are down and everyone's cell phones have strangely disappeared.
True to form, Maggie and her two real live imaginary friends are embroiled in yet another adventure. The body is found hanging by his neck from a scaffold outside, his face staring into Maggie's room. Suspects are numerous, but one of the top suspects ends up dead too. Here we go again.
***** I have not had the pleasure of reading the previous books in this mystery series, so I can honestly say that newcomers will not find themselves lost at sea. I found this tale to be much like an old Sherlock case, but with some comedy and irony thrown in for depth. I dare readers to test their wits on this case! Superior! *****
