    Book Description

Now ranked the #1 selling Marketing Research book, this edition returns with an abundance of new and updated exercises, coverage, and features. Most notable is a special emphasis on online marketing research. Nearly every chapter includes coverage on how the Internet and new technologies are impacting research methods, for better and for worse. A book cannot succeed on new features and topics alone. With every new edition, reviewers complement these authors for an approach that is innovative yet approachable and reliable. Exercises and cases have been checked for accuracy, and the authors also recruited a Blue Ribbon Panel of marketing research professionals. The Panel explores today's increasingly digital research environment from a practitioner's point of view. Chapter topics include the marketing research process and industry, determining research objectives, research design, measurement, data collection and analysis, interpreting associations among variables, predictive analysis, and preparing and presenting the research report. For an understanding and appreciation of how marketing research works in practice.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid practical text on conducting Marketing Research.......2004-05-19

Even though this is a textbook, it is quite readable and I think it organized in a very clear and helpful way. The book is divided into three parts:

    1) Intro & Early Phases of Marketing Research (2 chapters)
    2) Research Design Formulation (10 chapters)
    3) Data Collection, Preparation, Analysis, and Reporting (11 chapters)

Each chapter not only has explanatory text, there are also many helpful pictures, diagrams, additional resources, cases, key terms & concepts, exercises, internet and computer exercises, and activities. The back has necessary statistical tables (if you don't have a calculator or spreadsheet handy, notes, an index, and credits.

The author is very practical in his approach. While he provides the necessary technical background and formulas to understand and get the work done, he does not wander off into the theoretical underpinnings of topics such as conjoint analysis. He wants the student to grasp the implications so far as being able to understand the topic, its implications, and how to implement and make use of the various marketing research concepts and tools.

The book also comes with a student version of SPSS 11.0. This is VERY handy for student project work at home and in developing skills with a popular and serious statistical tool. The book refers to SPSS many times and explains how it is used in implementing this or that topic under discussion.

4 out of 5 stars An okay book on trading psychology........2006-12-09

I've had this book for a long time and recently brought it out to read it again to see if I could extract any value from it as I found it difficult to do so on the first read. I read the review for her other book where some reviewers said her writing style was difficult to understand. I agree with those insights with respect to that volume. My main difficulty with this one, was, how can I practically use this information? ... and I'm still stretched to do that.

Having read other works in the area, I was already aware of the main components of the athelete's type mindset - goal setting, visualisation, breathing, being present, NLP, that kind of thing, and that's not a great deal of interest to me as that's not how I'd want to work on myself psychologically. I dont find those insights ground breaking, it's just applying concepts that have been around for many years to trading. Brown describes another model, The Three Selves (High Self, Conscious Self and Basic Self) that is much more comprehensively described in a book by John Roger of the MSIA (you'll have to look online to find his works).

I think there are a few good points in the book though and if you're into NLP, goal setting, visualisation, that kind of thing, you might find the book useful.

In summary though, I wouldn't pay full price for this book as I found the content to be difficult to extract its value.

My starting point and preference for trading psychology would be the excellent works of Mark Douglas, van Tharp.

        5 out of 5 stars Buy it........2002-12-15

Buy it. Add it to your library. It is an excellent book on the psychology of trading, which the experts say is really what makes or breaks a trader in the end, not being a technical indicator expert, but being psychologically prepared.

        5 out of 5 stars Very solid.......2000-09-30

Ms. Brown really knows what is going on here. If you stray away from the moment and allow your mind to be overcome by the distractions of the world, you are going to lose. This applies to not only trading, but to life as well. It's all about your mind. To quote the great Ed Seykota, "Everybody gets what they want."

So how do you get what you want? Well, although I am still trying to figure that out, but Ms. Brown gives some great insight into how you can begin to find out, while becoming even more true to yourself in the process. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book by a trader who has been there and done that!!.......1999-07-04

This is an outstanding book by an author who has been there and done it all. The psychological aspects of trading are extremely complex, and really can not and have not been adequately covered by the psychological trade writers who are not traders. Ms. Brown has the most complete summary of the positive and negative sides of trading that I have ever seen, and her writing is carefully constructed with the understanding of the reader in mind. She helped bring me back from the depths of that dreaded trader disease, burnout. Her work in this book becomes even more impressive when you read her latest book, Technical Analysis for the Trading Professional, one of the most innovative efforts that I have seen by any author. Ms. Brown is very clearly not a one book flameout!!

                  Book Description

This book provides a clear, practical and illuminating guide to the ideas and terminology of Biotechnology. Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing, most exciting, and most controversial areas of science and technology in the 21st Century, an industry worth billions and a political topic that has shaken governments. It has already produced scientific achievements, from cloning to sequencing the genome, which would have seemed miraculous 20 years ago, and an industry with thousands of companies spanning the world. But this is based on a set of scientific disciplines with their own jargon, ideas and limitations. This book describes those ideas and terms, and what they really mean for science, industry and society. In 300 entries from ADEPT through cloning, genomes, patents, and viruses to zoonosis, A to Z provides over 300 concise entries describing what the science is, what it does, and the reality of how it has been used, and could be applied. It can be read cover to cover, or dipped into for a quick understanding of a topic.

5 out of 5 stars Biotechnology from A to Z.......2000-04-25

Biotechnology from A to Z, 2nd edition, by W. Bains With the current explosion of interest in biotechnology and the application of the basic techniques of genetic engineering to medicine, agriculture, forensics, environment, it is becoming increasingly difficult for any one person to stay abreast of all the applications. A handbook such as Bains' is invaluable in cutting straight to the point and providing the appropriate jargon for the particular discipline. Scientists, science writers, environmental activists, everyone will find this book an invaluable reference source. My favorite few pages go from Affinity Tag, Ageing, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, AIDS, to Airlift fermentor. All the entries are explained in clear concise English, with the just the right amount of cross-entries. As is appropriate for a biotechnology book, there are frequent practical examples. There is a good index and a list of books for further reading. It's a shame OUP couldn't have kept the internet address stable. This book is a definite good buy.

                          Description:
This research explores the contribution of policy tool toward the formation of Taiwanese biotechnology firms. The effect of technological policy for the formation of new biotechnology firms (NBFs) is complicated by the fact that biotechnology is new, and its development raises issues where there is a great deal of uncertainty. This research involved the evaluation of policy tools on the formation of NBFs and was based on a combination of fuzzy multiple criteria decision-making method (MCDM) and interviews with key actors in the field. The focus of this paper is how the users, biofirms, and venture capitalists perceive the contribution of policy tools toward the formation of NBFs. The evaluating hierarchy toward the formation of NBFs shows that two user groups perceive differently. Venture capitalists emphasize the importance of factors relating to technology and human resources, while biofirm groups emphasize those relating to market. The results of the evaluation reveal that: First, policy tools relating to technology and human capital are currently the main focus in Taiwan, a focus consistent with the perception of venture capitalists. However, from the perspective of biofirms, there are mismatches. Second, policy tools contribute to the formation of NBFs in different ways. Some contribute more widely across the criteria, while some are more specific. Third, the ranking of eight policy tools indicates that the role of public research institutes in economic development has become more sophisticated. Not only are they the source of initial capabilities of emerging firms, they are also important actors in industrial innovation, especially for a knowledge-intensive, industry-like biotechnology.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A078324. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Vision is the primary sense by which most biological systems collect information about their environment. Computer vision is a branch of artificial intelligence concerned with endowing machines with the ability to understand images. Object recognition is a key part of machine vision with far reaching benefits ranging from target recognition, surveillance systems, to automation systems. Extraction of salient features from an image is one of the key steps in object recognition. Typically, geometric primitives are extracted from an image using local analysis. However, the wavelet transform provides a global approach with good locality. Additionally, the directional and multiresolution properties may be exploited as a pre-processor to a neural network. This thesis examines the benefits of the wavelet transform as a preprocessor to a neural network for object recognition. Scaling of the wavelet coefficients and different neural network topologies are investigated. The system developed in this research is not intended to be critiqued on its classification performance. It only successfully classifies about 20% of the photographed models, however more important is the determination of the benefits of the wavelet transform, the effects of the various post-wavelet scaling functions, and the best neural network topology for this research. This is done by analyzing the system s performance on CAD models.

                                  Book Description

An accessible and practical introduction to wavelets

With applications in image processing, audio restoration, seismology, and elsewhere, wavelets have been the subject of growing excitement and interest over the past several years. Unfortunately, most books on wavelets are accessible primarily to research mathematicians. Discovering Wavelets presents basic and advanced concepts of wavelets in a way that is accessible to anyone with only a fundamental knowledge of linear algebra.

The basic concepts of wavelet theory are introduced in the context of an explanation of how the FBI uses wavelets to compress fingerprint images. Wavelet theory is further developed in the setting of function spaces. The book then moves on to present more advanced topics such as filters, multiresolution analysis, Daubechies' wavelets, and further applications. The book concludes with a series of projects and problems that introduce advanced topics and offer starting points for research. Sample projects that demonstrate real wavelet applications include image compression, a wavelet-based search engine, processing with Daubechies' wavelets, and more.

Among the special features of Discovering Wavelets are:
                                  * Real-life, hands-on examples that involve actual wavelet applications
                                  * A companion Web site containing Pixel Images software and Maple files to be used with the projects in the book
                                  * Challenging problems that reinforce and expand on the ideas being developed
                                  * An appendix containing the linear algebra needed to understand wavelets as presented in the book

3 out of 5 stars Heavy on group theory and math.......2005-12-10

This is a book about a very math heavy subject, but does try and put a more practical spin on it. If you have been away from math (Calculus and group theory) it MAY NOT be for you. If you pick up new things quickly, that is the intent.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-06-13

As part of a graduate course I was taking, I needed to put a presentation together on multiresolution analysis. To be honest, I knew nothing about wavelets and most of the books (including the classics such as Mallat's "A Wavelet Tour of Signal Processing" and Daubechies' "10 Lectures on Wavelets") jumped right into the theory without laying, in my opinion, the necessary foundation. I was frustrated.

Then I came upon this book. It was fantastic. The presentation of the subject in linear algebra terms was novel and was just what I was looking for. The presentation was crisp, concise and easy to understand. The problems presented in the text were placed after main ideas were presented rather than at the end of the chapter. And, many of the problems were designed to be a continuation of the text itself. A great approach.

After studying the subject as it was presented, I was able to read through the classics with a better understanding and appreciation of the subject.

In short, this is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars More like "Lecture Notes on Wavelets".......2001-09-05

                                  If the book provided
a clear introduction to wavelets and their implementation,
this would be fine. In fact, this book is more like a set
of lecture notes than a complete text book. I had already implemented Haar
wavelets and had started working on Daubechies wavelets.
Even with this background, I found the coverage in this
book obscure and difficult to understand. The authors
approach wavelets, including Haar wavelets, through
linear algebra. While this can be justified by the fact
that complex wavelets like Daubechies are best described
this way, the coverage in this book is obscure. I compare
this to Gilbert Strang's short paper "Wavelets", published
                                  in American Scientist, April 1994.
It is difficult for me to see how anyone could understand
Daubechies wavelets with this book alone.

My advice is buy another book.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Discovering Wavelets.......2000-09-20

Prior to this book I tried about 5 books and was not able to understand wavelets. This book gets directly to the point. It presents wavelets first as a tool (my interest) not as a "theory". However, the theory is introduced later. I am currently using wavelets in my research (analyzing geophysical signals).

4 out of 5 stars Good Practical Introduction.......2000-02-26

This book is an excellent practical introduction to wavelets. The mathematical level is appropriate for a non-mathematician learning about wavelets. Emphasis was placed on the Haar wavelet (although the Daubechies wavelet was introduced in section 3.6), making the concepts easier to understand. The problems were placed strategically throughout the chapters instead of at the end. This, I think, is the preferred method. Solving most of the problems (which was usually not difficult) was essential to understanding the material. The book is short, only four chapters, four appendices, and 125 pages. The chapter titles are: 1) Wavelets, Fingerprints, and Image Processing, 2) Wavelets and Orthogonal Decomposition, 3) Multiresolution, Cascades, and Filters, and 4) Sample Projects. On a scale of one (useless) to ten (very useful), I would rate the chapters: Ch1-8, Ch2-10, Ch3-9, and Ch4-3.

The shortcomings of the book are in what it lacks. It does not cover the relationship between Fourier analysis and wavelets, or how to apply the many different types of wavelets (other than Haar or Daubechies) to particular problems. The programming language used was Maple. I would have preferred pseudo code or C. The application of wavelets to images was somewhat limited.

In conclusion I would say this book is excellent as a stepping stone to other more advanced books on wavelets. It will not answer all of your wavelet questions, but it will significantly lessen the learning curve for the books that will.

                                  Book Description

A deliciously funny and wickedly sexy novel of love found (finally!) and love threatened (inevitably) by the families who claim to love us best. Romeo Cacciamani and Julie Roseman are rival florists in Boston, whose families have hated each other for as long as anyone can remember (what they can't remember is why). When these two vital, lonely people see each other across a crowded lobby at a small business owners' seminar, an intense attraction blooms that neither tries to squelch. They're not sure what fate has in store for them, but they're not about to let something as silly as a generations-long feud stand in the way of finding out. That is, not until Romeo's octogenarian mother, Julie's meddling ex-husband, and a cast of grown Cacciamani and Roseman children begin to intervene with a passionate hatred that matches their newly found love, stroke for stroke. Think Montagues and Capulets, think wise and witty and thoroughly modern. Julie and Romeo is a love story for the ages. All ages.

FINALLY a novel with a character over age 45! Great plot and felt like I knew Julie and Romeo as friends. Enjoyed the story tremendously. Some parts were laugh-out-loud funny.
And...I've also read the sequel, "Julie & Romeo Get Lucky"....I give that a 5 also.
Now I'm patiently waiting for this great author's next book to hit the book stores and find a place on my book shelf. I highly recommend Ray, especially if you're looking for characters beyond the chick lit age group.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A romantic novel about mature adults...what a concept!.......2007-06-24

This was an absolute joy to read. The author(a 60-something like myself) is talented and has a terrific sense of humor with characters who are mature and believable. Too, Ray has an ear for dialogue so that the characters sound like real people. All that in a debut novel? Amazing! I'm looking forward to reading more from Jeanne Ray. O...I normally don't read this kind of book, being a guy hooked on thrillers and suspense, but I can't recommend this book highly enough. Do yourself a favor and pick JULIE AND ROMEO up and have a chuckle.

                                  5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!!! I WANT MORE!!.......2007-03-21

I was long overdue in finally - FINALLY! - reading this book after hearing so much about it! Living in the Nashville area, I remember reading in our newspaper several years ago about this local nurse whose debut novel created a bidding war among the Big Dog publishing houses. But it wasn't until just recently that I came across JULIE & ROMEO and realized what all that fuss was about! WOW!!! Jeanne Ray is such a breath of fresh air! It absolutely blows me away that this is a debut novel - it's MUCH too good! After reading it, I immediately got all the rest of Ray's books, DEVOURED them, and now I'm anxiously awaiting whatever's next. Just please tell me another one is on the way!?

One of the things I love most about Jeanne Ray's books is her quirky middle-aged characters. In a world overdosing on Britneys, Lindseys, and Paris Hiltons, GLORY it's nice to find the kind of people you'd actually like to know. They're flawed, down-to-earth, and way too much fun getting to know! There aren't many books out there that can make me laugh out loud, but all of hers do.

I am THRILLED to discover this relatively new author and I can't wait to have a whole shelf filled with Jeanne Ray books! Bring 'em on!
