Excellent overview.......2005-09-28
If you are wanting a brief overview of computers, networking, and operating systems, this is the book for you. I've worked with personal computers and networking systems for eighteen years and still gained a lot of new information from the book. Some of the information could use a tad more updating, otherwise I would have given it five stars instead of four.

Making Light Matter of Dark Matter.......2007-01-30
As we proceeded with our investigation into the arcane science
of microwave laser particle beam physics, we discovered several barriers.
One of these was the apparent effects of Dark Matter on the
path of MASER beams.
We could never explain why our system behaved in such a way
that contravened the principles of so-called "Dark Matter".
One of our crew was an avid reader of leading-edge physics
and science books and came across a possible explanation in
Process Physics:
Dark Matter could be a figment of human imagination
or a deliberate false hypothesis that misleads the "educated"
away from certain crucial flaws in accepted scientific theory.
This easily provided an explanation for why we observed results
almost opposite those forecast by several of Einstein's theories.
In the 19th century, the Theory of Darwin was all the rage
in England and throughout the Commonwealth, even as the various
Einstein theories are rigidly specified in "accepted"
scientific thought and investigation in this age.
It becomes more evident to some of us that "modern science"
is probably a religion based around dogmatic beliefs of
a very materialistic physical value system.
PP helped some of us break through some of the barriers
laid down by the Thought Police of modern "science".
Cahill's book is best read and used by scientific investigators
with adequate collegiate backgrounds in mathematics
related to physics and quantum mechanics.
PP is probably a book Galileo would have been proud of,
and perhaps, would have possibly faced another death threat,
or termination of salary support, from the ruling Roman
religious elite of that day or the ruling Czars
of today's "space age" physical materialist physicians.
I conclude that PP yields some very interesting,
and mathematically challenging exposures, a
revealing paradigm, that can be used to advantage
when examining the enigmatic Laws of Nature
and inconsistencies of "popular" science.
A new paradigm for physics?.......2006-10-10
Reginald Cahill is attempting nothing less than a revolutionary paradigm shift in physics. It is to be accomplished by modeling time as a process instead of as a geometric line. The old geometric model captures some aspects of time, such as the notion of events in an order and the quantitative "length of time" between events, but it is unable to capture the fundamental distinction between the past and the future. "The past is fixed and at best partially recorded, while the future is undecided and certainly not recorded" (p. 12). The failure of physics to model time as a process led eventually to Einstein's conception of time as the fourth dimension of spacetime, the block universe whose future popped into existence as soon as the universe was formed, and gravity as a curvature of spacetime. Perhaps Cahill's most startling claim is that "the Einstein curved spacetime construct is without experimental support, that it actually never was confirmed by the key and celebrated experiments...," but it persists in the face of contradictory evidence because "the non-process paradigm has acquired the status of a belief system, as distinct from a science..." (10-11). Process physics does support the relativistic effects of special relativity (time-dilation and length contraction), but places them within a different theory of time, space and gravity. Cahill says that quantum effects also emerge naturally from process physics.
Process physics models reality as a "self-organizing semantic information system," whereas non-process models are merely syntactical. For example, a Turing computing machine is a syntactical system in the sense that the information held by the machine is meaningless to the machine itself. My word processor doesn't understand what I write, although hopefully I do! A syntactical system is just a set of objects acted upon by other objects, and such a system can be modeled with a set of symbols to represent the objects and a set of rules describing their interactions. As biologist Robert Rosen has written, "the formalist position, that the universe of discourse needs to consist of nothing more than meaningless symbols pushed around by definite rules of manipulation, is exactly parallel to the mechanical picture of the phenomenal world as consisting of nothing more than configurations of structureless particles, pushed around by impressed forces" (Life Itself, p. 7). Rosen has argued that this framework is inadequate for understanding living systems, let alone human minds. Now Cahill is arguing that it is inadequate for understanding reality in general.
If one takes seriously the notion that the future is less defined than the past, then one may regard reality as a process of ongoing self-definition, with each "now" an occasion of self-definition. We need a model of an information system that can actively use the information within itself to further define itself, continually constructing its future out of its past. Thinkers in the humanities and social sciences have described human minds and cultures this way. Cahill is trying to model all of physical reality as such a semantic system. He models it mathematically as a stochastic neural network whose nodes are sub-networks of the same kind, ad infinitum (no "bottom" or beginning of reality being supposed), and whose iterations within a nonlinear dynamic process capture the notion of process time. The fundamental equation describing the matrix iterations includes a noise factor that "limits the self-referential relational information but, significantly, also acts in such a way that the network is innovative in the sense of generating semantic information...." (p. 24). So the system never stops defining itself. From this mathematical foundation, he proceeds to reformulate and extend fundamental physics, including a new theory of quantum gravity.
I am not a physicist, so I can't evaluate Cahill's physics as such. I am a sociologist interested in paradigm shifts, and I give Cahill high marks for addressing the problems with the prevailing scientific paradigm. How well his work will stand up to scientific scrutiny remains to be seen. Time (what else?) will tell.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for everyday or special occasion cooking.......2007-10-04
This is an excellent cookbook, in that the recipes are creative and delicious yet simple and easy to prepare. I use it for quick weekday cooking and also for special occasions.
Another reviewer here stated that based on the names of the dishes that he *assumed* that the recipes would be complicated and time-consuming to prepare, and therefore gave the book away. It's too bad he didn't actually try to make one of the recipes because, quite remarkably, the preparation and cooking times are as short as indicated, yet the food is as good as he might have imagined.
Great speedy gourmet meals.......2007-06-26
The book is great -- I love to look at it and through it! Smile.
Not much to like here........2006-07-15
If recipes like Fillet of Beef in Tomato, Caper, and Anchovy Sauce; Wild Mushroom Polenta with Thyme and Aged Goat Cheese; Pan-Sauteed Swordfish with Anchovies, Garlic and Tomato Fondue and Cappellini with Pan-Seared Calamari, Tomatoes, and Lemon sound like spur of the moment then this is the book for you. Very little in this book looked as though I could just go to the kitchen and whip something up. I will be donating this book to charity.
Live up to its title.......2005-06-08
This is truly a book that lends itself to the spur of the moment. Great recipes, none too complicated, and all very tasty.
Take this Book Grocery Shopping!.......2002-11-26
My absolute favorite cookbook. The recipes are original and distinctive and truly can be cooked at the spur of the moment. The leek and yellow raisin chutney and flank steak marinated in peppers in adobo sauce are only two examples that can be prepared in 20 minutes yet truly impress. I haven't found a cook book that's so consistent and also suprising.

Egh..........2007-05-25
I generally enjoy the genre of this book, so when I saw it on clearance for $2 at the local book store I decided to give it a try. I felt the story was alright but the writing was... not great.
I don't mean to sound too critical (and I haven't read any of the author's other books) but I found the writing to be almost to "by the book". I noticed at the beginning she used a lot of analogies to describe things and in general way too many product references, such as (not actual quote) "They were eating Doritos while X played XBox and Y read People Magazine".
I guess I just found the writing to be something I would expect from a school assignment where the teacher had a list of writing skills she wanted the students to incorporate into the story. BUT I gave the story 3 stars because I did read the whole thing in about 2 days and didn't feel like I wasted my time.
Did I read the same book.......2007-03-06
To be honest I am surprised at the high rating this book seemed to have received from all the readers so far. I love chick-lit, the funnier the better, but this book felt a little flat for me. What is odd is I cannot pin point what I did not like about the book, I just really struggled to get into the story, and really struggled just to finish it. I think my main problem was I was expecting it to be a 5-star book, and it really was only a 3 1/2....however, since I was so disappointed, it felt like a 2-star book. Maybe if I hadn't had such high expectations I would have enjoyed it some what better.
You'll Love to Laugh with these Goofballs.......2007-02-03
One of my beefs with a lot of fictional characters is that they're either so perfect you can't relate to them, or so unlikeable all you want to do is kill them off yourself. I want to hang out with these people - they've fun AND funny, and supportive of each other, each character has a distinct voice and there's conflict and tension without anyone having to be a victim. A great, fun read - bravo, Theresa! I'll definitely be reading more of your work.
can't wait to read more from Theresa Alan.......2006-04-19
This book is such a fun read, revolving around the lives of six improv comedians who work at Spur of the Moment. The main main character is Ana, but we actually see the perspective of everyone else, Chelsea, Marin, Jason, Scott and Ramiro. It was such a fun read that I started yesterday night and finished it this morning. It is definately a fun, beach read.
Ana, who has always had a crush on Jason, talks about how she wants to be someone in life and not just do improv part time and her office job during the day. She has always aspired to do stand-up, but she is too scared. Jason is a teacher, environmentalist, and a vegetarian, BUT has been in "love" with Marin for a long time, yet she only sleeps with him here and there. Marin is a beautiful, funny, Britney look-a-like who hates her day job, loves her job at Spur of the Moment, has rich parents who never go and see her, and is always searching for more. She gets the opportunity to go to LA and do a pilot for a WB upcoming series. There she meets Jay, whom she falls for, while Jason is at home, brooding over her. Ramiro is latino and gay (and thats why his father won't speak to him). He writes novels, yet doesn't publish them or try to get them to be published. Ana, being the great friend that she is, reads one of them and loves it. She sends his book to a few publishers and hopes that he gets something out of it. Chelsea actually does not live with them (the other five do) but is a personal trainer by day. She meets Rob, whom she falls for, yet, she hates his job as a firefighter. And last but not least, Scott. Scott has always had this thing for Ana, but since she has always been crushing over Jason, he doesn't do anything. They actually make out and one day she realizes, that hey, maybe something between them can happen.
I don't want to give out more from the book, but that is just some of the problems that the group encounters. It was funny, romantic, sad and all around great. As a previous reviewer said, it reminds me of Sex in the City, since we see everyone's perspective, but there still is sort of a main character. The difference is, we see guys' perspectives, which adds a little more sizzle to this already enchanting and funny book. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!
A MUST READ!.......2006-04-09
This is the most real book I've read in long time! The way the characters interact with one another is so true to life you feel as if you're in the story yourself. The only thing I did not like was the ending. While the message was well received, I found it to be quite abrupt. But other than that, this was a great book and a definite must read!

Instant parties are the wave of the future. They're happenin'. They're now. Literally. It's what instant means. If you have tableware, music, a wee bit of know-how in the kitchen, and a few this-and-thats to use for props, you can whip up any one of fifty instant parties in a matter of hours. And this book shows you how to do it without even breaking a sweat.
Customer Reviews:
Parties R us.......2002-05-28
Great ideas, easily done! An American theme which can be readily adapted to anywhere in the world. We have used several of the themes already, and have had great fun - we've even become popular with our friends for a change. Well written and fun to read - we laughed until we stopped!!!
Highly recommended to anyone with a sense of fun and adventure. To anyone else - you don't know what you're missing!
New Ideas.......2001-11-13
Party books always catch my eye since our family gets together often. However this book not only caught my eye -- I bought it! I also suggested my library buy it, and after reviewing it, they agreed! I am thrilled with the new ideas I can use on old friends and family that have been to more than a couple parties at our house. After awhile it seems like you've served the same food and done the same thing. Instant Parties gives complete, fun ideas for parties with a different twist - not weird - just refreshingly new!! The humor the book is written with encourages your party brainstorm, and if you hadn't planned on giving a party, it will get you in the party mood!! It's a great book.
This book made me look good.......2001-11-02
I live in Key West FL and as you can probably imagine a quite a town for parties. Like most Conchs I hold 2 jobs to cover the costs of living large in paradise so I don't have the time(or the creativity truth be told)to pull off a party that measures up. The 2 parties I have thrown so far using this book has made me quite the center of attention amongst my (rapidly expanding) circle of friends. Two words "BUY IT!" I can't wait to throw the "Done Yer Duty" party after the holidays. p.s. The book is also very funny. Too bad there is not a 6-Star rating available.
Great ideas for bringing people together!.......2001-10-03
Are you tired of "sitting around and having pleasant chatter" type parties? This book gives you creative, manageable, fun ideas for parties that your friends will be talking and laughing about for years. If you want the "same old-same old" - buy a different book.
The format is entertaining - so just read it for the fun of it - you can dream of the friends you would invite.
I am planning to buy several as gifts for my friends. I want the whole bunch to bond together by planning and participating in a variety of parties as described in the book.
I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats!.......2001-10-01
It's about time that a party book was written that still allows you to have fun at your own gathering instead of worrying about the weird French dish in the oven. A great, unpretentious book that features creative ideas and is entertaining to read even if you have no friends to throw a party for. These are parties that are quick, easy, and fun that won't stress you out or empty your wallet. I highly recommend it!
