3 out of 5 stars It's the thought that counts..........2002-11-14

Michael Chacon, et al give a good attempt to easy your studying for the 70-218, Managing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Environment. However, this edition is riddled with obvious errors. Nearly half of these errors are contributed to poor wording (i.e. When you boot a DHCP client for the first time... listens for a lease offer , and chooses one it likes." page 98 -- DHCP clients cannot choose anything. They accept the first address that they receive. The other half are just errors (i.e. "Even though IIS is built into Windows 2000 Server, it is not installed by default." page 712 -- oh yes it is, and you should be aware of that with all the IIS hacks lately. However, the authors are quick to respond to these errors when brought to their attention and Sybex does a great job of making the corrections available on their website. Overall, the book makes a fine attempt to get you skilled in Windows 2000 network management. My only suggestion would be is not to use this book as your only source.

5 out of 5 stars The standard.......2002-08-15

THere are a few things I would change with this book, but, like the other Sybex/Chellis/Donald certification books, these are the standard. This MCSA exam covers a wide swath of topics, so take it last. You'll see a lot of overlap. Know group policies. I even saw and active directory question on the exam, and was a bit surprised. The book did a good job preparing me in general.

5 out of 5 stars All you need and more to pass your exam.......2002-08-14

This book cover everything you should know before attempting to pass the 70-218 exam assuming that you already study and passed the 70-215 exam. It goes beyond the scope of the exam in the area of intra and inter-site active directory replication (at least for the exam that I passed) but it helped me to understand the overall concept. The explanations are simple but effective (not lile the microsoft book).I also used the sybex tcp/ip jumpstart book who is very good at explaining the concept of subnetting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book(S).......2002-08-13

I already had the sybex core 4 for MCSE, but i decided to become an MCSA first, so I bought this Book. It is very well organized and easy to understand. However, this is not a new book. It is made of a selection of chapters from the MCSE core 4 Books of sybex.
I passed the exam using only this book, so no matter how they did it, there is no doubt that those guys at sybex know how to prepare u for an exam.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome test prep book.......2002-07-02

Once again, Sybex raises the bar on its certification titles. A very comprehensive title that not only helped me pass the Windows 2000 Network Management exam, but also taught me the skills I need in my every day job. This is more than a test prep book.

Book Description

Central bankers play a prominent role in many societies; a few of them even become oracles or celebrities. Yet they are not paid much heed - commonly accorded little respect - as educators and intellectual leaders. This volume hopes to change that. For the world's best central bankers, portrayed here, teach and lead impressively, doing so with insight, courage, quality, and conviction. They are commendable role models for those with high aspirations.
The growing reputation of central bankers suggests that there is much to be learned from examining the ways in which they practice their profession. So the authors proceeded to ask what are arguably the world's seven best central bankers, from various countries throughout the world, for documentation on what they considered to be their finest achievements and how they went about gaining support for policies designed to maintain price stability. They obtained excellent cooperation from John Crow of Canada, Roberto Zahler of Chile, Alan Greenspan of the United States, Helmut Schlesinger of Germany, Markus Lusser of Switzerland, Donald Brash of New Zealand and Yasushi Mieno of Japan.
They offer here a series of essays in which they present what central bankers have to say for themselves and the lessons they believe they can teach about monetary policy - not what economists, politicians, or journalists like to say about them. Learning from gifted practitioners is common in many fields where personal skills and the quality of judgment and execution matter so critically. It is particularly important in fields such as central banking where gaining political support, maintaining independence, and establishing credibility often make the difference between success and failure.
In this volume, we find a fascinating treatment of how the governors have tackled the hardest dilemmas of policy-making in their own specific political settings. We learn how the bankers themselves believe they have earned and preserved credibility and how they have maintained and expanded their base of support. We read, partly in their own words, how they have attempted to inspire trust and have secured and defended the independence of their institutions. We read how they have tried to cope with regulatory failures, unstable surges of capital flows, extremes in asset valuations, and financial crisis. Perhaps one of the most interesting lessons we learn is that central bankers must refuse to accept credit for fortuitous successes, like favorable supply shocks, lest they be blamed and lose credibility when things beyond their control go wrong.
As Professor Malkiel concludes in his Foreword, the essays in this volume can be of enormous value to academic economists, students, and especially future leaders in banking, finance, and government service. No study of monetary theory and policy will want to miss this fascinating work where the world's most gifted central bankers speak so eloquently about their trade.

excerpt from review by Governor John Crow:

"(The authors) have captured the essence of the issues confronting (central bankers) and there's enough variety of circumstance and treatment to propel the topic vigorously through the seven chapters

I've read a number of books about central banking written in recent years. Unlike those books, (this Work) deals with the real questions the policy-maker faces - in a way that a textbook cannot match."

                Book Description

This volume presents recent progress in our understanding of various mechanisms involved in chemical communication between individual animals. Such communication is important for survival and reproduction of any vertebrate species in a variable environment. Apart from visual and acoustic signals, many animals developed highly complex means of conveying message by odor and taste. Low molecular weight and volatile compounds known as pheromones affect many metabolic processes and behavioral traits. The chapters in this book are derived from presentations and discussions at the Ninth International Symposium on Chemical Signals in Vertebrates, held at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland, on July 25-29, 2000. The four days and nights of discussions at the conference explored diverse topics in chemical communication, and many of the chapters in this volume were improved by revisions in which the authors took into account the discussions in Krakow.

                        Book Description

Welcome to San Diablo. The perfect place to raise a couple of kids and a lot of Hell. Especially if you're Kate Connor, retired demon hunter. Now, after fourteen years busting her tail as a suburban housewife, raising two kids, and supporting her husband's political ambitions, she's rejoined the workforce...well, secretly, at least. Between fending off demon attacks, trying to figure out why the mysterious new teacher at the high school seems so strangely familiar, and keeping a watchful eye on her daughter's growing infatuation with a surfer dude, Kate is the busiest-and most dangerous-soccer mom on the block.

Fifty pages about a normal Mom battling demons in suburbia, add two hundred pages of daily life in suburbia with an occasional foray into the 'supernatural thing.' Finish with thirty pages of supernatural climax where Kate comes off as Saving The Day.

I read this book already. It was called Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom. Kenner changed around a few details, but I essentially read the same book a second time. Once was enough; this series had a neat riff on the Buffy theme, but what made Buffy great is she rose above her cliche. Kate hasn't.

I gave the second a chance after reading the first, and it didn't wow me. I'd rather read good Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfiction, but I have to admit the third novel in this series sounds very interesting. Her daughter learning about the nightlife is actually a new direction (unless her boyfriend in #3 is also inhuman, that would be three strikes, you're out). May try it later, but not high on the reading list.

4 out of 5 stars Just Another Day for Kate.......2007-08-08

In this second outing, Kate follows one of her charges from Coastal Mists knowing that no one recovers that quickly from a coma and that this must be another demonic possession. She is lead to her daughters school where she finds a book that appears blank only to finds that it is a portal to tortured demonic souls. Just another day for Kate who has to fit this in-between getting her teen daughter to cheerleading practice, getting her 2 year old to daycare, and having dinner on the table by 6. But the twists to this book are what keep the story moving - the notes and quirks that bring back her memories of Eric, her first husband that was killed five years ago, her daughters teacher - who has a few secrets of his own, and Cool - the surfing phenom that has a sudden interest in San Diablo. Kenner is such a funny writer that you can't help but laugh out loud when a demon gets a ice pick through the eye.

A great follow up to the debut of Carpe Demon. In this second book, evil is still lurking around town and Kate is getting more deeply involved in uncovering it. From the seniors home to the highschool event where her daughter is, strange things are happening. Can Kate keep the events from threatening her family? A new person in town may have a closer relationship to Kate than at first glance.

1 out of 5 stars Boring and Plodding.......2007-05-02

I've loved reading Julie Kenner for a long time now but this book was a utter dissapointment. I couldn't even get through the book instead I turned to book on tape and even then I found myself skipping ahead.

Too much unnecessary detail. Too much whining. Half way through I actually didn't like the main character anymore. This is not Buffy people is just crappy.

I won't pick up anymore from this series but I will continue to read Kenner.

4 out of 5 stars So Much Fun!.......2007-02-04

Kate Conner's days are pretty full. She has a teenager, a toddler, a husband, and oh yeah, she's a level four demon hunter. If Kate's days are busy enough, she's still trying to keep her secret identity a secret from her family. But when a series of demon attacks are centered on Kate's daughter's high school, she'll have to work overtime to protect her identity and save the day.

I really, really enjoy this series. It's a fun little series. Definitely fluffy reading, but there is nothing wrong with that! Sometimes, that is just what a reader is looking for. If you want a quick read with a supernatural twist, this book is for you!
