Book Description
Congratulations! Instead of blowing several hundred bucks on the biggest and most muscle-bound word processor, database program, spreadsheet program, graphics, and communications software you can find, you're using Microsoft Works 2000 – a program that can do probably everything you need for a lot less trouble and money.
Now it's time to stretch out your fingers and get ready to put this software to work. This step-by-step guide is for those people who
- Want to learn about their software without being bored silly
- Feel as though there should be a manual to explain the software manual
- Actually want to get some work done. Soon. Like today.
- Don't want to wade through a lot of technical gibberish/
- Don't think the way computer software engineers seem to think.
This book describes how to use all the programs of Microsoft Works 2000, separately and together, plus some introductory things on Windows, disks, and other basics. In this book, you'll explore the following topics and more:
- Window basics (opening, closing, and painting them shut)
- Word processing (like food processing, only messier)
- Spreadsheets (for soft, comfortable naps on your spreadbed)
- Databases (for storing all your baseless data)
- Graphics (for charting uncharted waters and general doodling)
- Calendarification, Calendarizing? (Using a calendar program)
- Web browsing (for schmoozing the Internet's World Wide Web)
- Newsgroups (for ranting about your pet peeves)
- E-mail (for sending and receiving messages and files)
- "Mail merge" of letters, envelopes, and labels (for doing your very own junk mail)
Unlike software manuals, this book doesn't have to deliver a positive message about the software, so it doesn't breathlessly try to show you everything you could possibly do. Nor does it describe, as a manual does, every button and command. Instead, it focuses on the everyday things you have to do, gives you some background, points you toward shortcuts, and steers you around some of the stuff you probably don't need.

additional support.......2001-03-09
My particular problem was not addressed in the book. But the author promptly responded to my e-mail question. The result was that my problem was solved. I then asked another problem not related to the subject of this particular book and he again swiftly answered with a solution that solved my problem.
Works 2000 for Dummies.......2000-07-12
Whether you are new to Microsoft Works or new to computing in general Microsoft Works 2000 for Dummies will get you started in a real way. As with all the "Dummies" series of books, is an excellent book for a beginner. Jargon, the bane of most computer books, is explained in plain English. This is not a book to sit down and read through like a novel but one to sit at the computer and try things out. The step by step instructions really help in making the computer do what you want it to. The only problem I have is with the name. Many people already feel like 'dummies' when it comes to the computer and they don't want to be caught with a book that announces that. Yet, even with that handicapp, I'd tell anyone who would like to try Microsoft Works 2000 to get this book.

Dummies work everytime!.......2000-04-06
I have used the "Dummies" books for many years. Ihave found them all very helpful. The layout is always easy to followand the lanuage is easily understood. This book is no different. Within an hour I had learned the difference between Word 95 and Word 2000. I found easy ways to transfer info from Works 4.5 to this version. I tried to do these things before I got this book. I could not make the tasks work. This book was a good investment because it will allow me to get everything out of Works suite 2000 possible. I would recommend this book to save yourself some headaches.

Product Description

Book Description
Because of its history and location, Eritrea is an ideal example for a study of the sustainability of traditional rural communities and the impact of local and external actors on them. This book provides a lucid account of the pillage of rural sustainability under modern hegemonic conditions. It traces the manner in which the imprints left by European rule were accentuated during Ethiopian control. These legacies continue to haunt rural communities after independence in the shape of resource shortages, the dominance of western civilization, and the modernization-based policies of the ruling Eritrean class which originated under European rule.

Book Description
Surveying and mapping has recently undergone a transition: from discipline-oriented technologies, such as geodesy, surveying, photogrammetry and cartography, to the methodology-oriented integrated discipline of geoinformatics based on GPS positioning, remote sensing, digital photography and GIS for data manipulation and data output. This book presents the required basic background for remote sensing, digital photogrammetry and GIS in the new geoinformatics concept in which the different methodologies must be combined. For remote sensing, the basic fundamentals are the properties of electromagnetic radiation and their interaction with matter. This radiation is received by sensors and platforms in analogue or digital form, and is subject to image processing. In photogrammetry, the stereo-concept is used for the location of information in 3D. With the advent of high-resolution satellite systems in stereo, the theory of analytical photogrammetry restituting 2-D image information into 3D is of increasing importance, merging the remote sensing approach with that of photogrammetry. The result of the restitution is a direct input into geographical information systems in vector or in raster form. The fundamentals of these are described in detail, with an emphasis on global, regional and local applications. For data integration, a short introduction into the GPS Satellite positioning system is added. This textbook will appeal to a wide range of readers, from advanced undergraduates to all professionals in the growing field of geoinformation.

Book Description
This text breaks new ground in presenting and applying sophisticated mathematics in an elementary setting. Aimed at physics students, it covers the theory and physical applications of linear algebra and of the calculus of several variables, particularly the exterior calculus. The exterior differential calculus is now being recognized by mathematicians and physicists as the best method of formulating the geometrical laws of physics, and the frontiers of physics have already begun to reopen fundamental questions about the geometry of space and time. Covering the basics of differential and integral calculus, the authors then apply the theory to interesting problems in optics, electronics (networks), electrostatics, wave dynamics, and finally to classical thermodynamics. The authors adopt the "spiral method" of teaching (rather than rectilinear), covering the same topic several times at increasing levels of sophistication and range of application.
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff badly written.......2003-08-05
I'm going to mention the second volume almost exclusively. This is where the action is located. It is hard to find any equivalent treatment of circuit theory using algebraic topology. You should have some mathematics background or some patience and a stack of books on algebra and algebraic topology so you can understand what these authors write so poorly. However, while the text (vol.2) loses a star for being horribly written, it gains four stars for the amazing content. If you are patient you will see a side of circuits you have never dreamt of and then you will be led into the generalized (continuous) version which is electromagnetics.
If you are looking for some really accessible and really interesting mathematics on circuits and EM buy this book (or buy it used, I bought my hardcover for 10$) You might also find it useful to consult the appendix in Frankel's Geometry of Physics for comparison.
Have fun and keep in mind that the book is written by sadists, clever and intelligent, but sadists all the way!
Simply fascinating!.......2002-08-30
In short, I find this kind of a book very rare indeed.
If you are doing physics and electronics at the undergraduate level, this book will open your eyes to a whole new unified approach to several on-the-surface different topics. I wonder why many course designer's haven't looked at this book and realized how accessible it has made some of the relatively modern concepts. The authors laudably attend on each concept with a passion to make the reader confident of grasping at least a few different ways of looking at it, keeping the core well in view all the time. It is also to their credit to have kept the beauty in the ideas intact with a good balance of abstraction and concrete instances.
In particular, the authors treatment of exterior calculus is an eye opener if you are new to the topic. For a student only exposed to traditional methods, it is a revealer to see the laws of linear electrical circuits as well as Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism being expressed in precisely the same language. It is totally to the credit of the authors to have presented the concepts in such a simple to understand progression. For example, they make you see clearly why you have understood the divergence theorem or Stokes theorem of conventional vector calculus if you've grasped the essence of the calculus of functions of a single variable. Its a fantastic voyage folks, and you've got some of the best guides methinks.
All those who find physics and mathematics a drag at college should grab this book and be enlightened. I wish they fix some of the errors in the book in future editions, but the errors don't at all hinder the learning.
Ten thumbs up!
An interested amateur physicist.......2002-04-03
I don't understand why some of the reviews here are mediocre. Although I haven't read the book to any depth, I have a knack of knowing whether a book exudes quaity by browsing briefly through it to get a general feel; the breadth of the material presented is breathtaking and at least eye-opening. Here are some reviews from the back cover...
American Journal Of Physics:- Not only is the mathematics clean, elegant, and modern blah, blah, blah... This is first rate!
Times Higher Education Supplement:-
...There is to my knowledge no comparable book, and it is hard to imagine a more inspiring one.
Remember also that there are two volumes.
a difficult book with few rewards.......2001-04-16
I can only say one good thing about this book: it steered me towards a couple of really worthwhile books. I began to read Bamberg/Sternberg about five years ago, when I was looking for a book that could explain the mathematics that physicists use. It was heavy going from the first chapter, although I am not a neophyte in mathematics. I found it slow, obscure, devoid of true proofs and explanations when I needed them most. As another reader said, the books is perfunctory while it seems it wants to aim high. I finally gave up, after the tremendously confusing chapter 5 on scalar products. But I followed a couple of their bibliographic suggestions. In particular, I read the very enjoyable and rewarding Loomis and Sternberg, "Advanced Calculus," a classic textbook, not an easy one, but one that rewards hard work. Loomis/Sternberg is a comprehensive, solid, insightful book that covers a lot of the material of Bamberg/Sternberg's first volume. I took up Bamberg/Stenberg this week again, after a hiatus of several years, having digested several books on linear algebra, topology, and functional analysis, and I still find it very difficult to read Chapter 1. The reason: nothing is fully explained or proven. Rather, the book reads like a collection of hints that barely connect and in places is painfully slow. My advice: don't try to read it unless you are forced to. For a neat, useful, modern introduction to mathematical physics, try Hassani. Or go back to that jewel, Loomis/Sternberg, if you can find it.
a course in mathematics for students of physics.......2001-01-09
i could hardly believe that in the chapter on linear algebra, the authors never discuss any but 2 dimensional spaces (claiming that it is easily generalized. not so!)... and the chapter on differential forms left me scratching my head... it introduces them by a taylor expansion, and claims that they are mappings, but never explains or motivates that.
i found that this book covers its topics only perfunctorily, and aims to high, thinking that it is more mathematical than it actually is. i would recommend frankel instead (a slightly more advanced text, but much better written).
Book Description
Lately, sea turtles have been turning up in the most unusual places around Croaker Neck, a small coastal fishing village in the Down East region of North Carolina. Dodge Lawson sets out to learn who is behind the eco-pranks. He fears it might be his friends-a dying breed of backwater buckaroos struggling to retain their traditions and self-sufficient way of life.
When a Yankee filmmaker down to his last reel shows up in town, the pranks escalate and events spiral out of control.
Customer Reviews:
saltwater cowboys.......2007-05-18
I lover the characters and of course the setting, since I have visited the Outer Banks, etc. for years. It was entertaining, but story was a bit weak. The author has a clever, quirky style that keeps the reader, but I would not highly recommend this to anyone that didn't enjoy the world of fishing, as I do.
Bravo!.......2004-10-20
I know well the area (Carteret County, way "off" Atlantic Beach) that is the setting for this book, and I live in the Triangle, so I loved reading about landmarks in both places. Although I've followed the underlying controvery in the book to some degree, I learned a few things, too, that I didn't realize were going on in my own backyard, so to speak. A good story and characters; a thoroughly enjoyable read. I especially loved the theory about The Lost Colony. Hmmm...
A funny, light read.......2004-09-09
I read the book while on a beach on Atlantic Island in North Carolina. It was an added bonus being able to relate to the various places mentioned in the book; Moorhead City, Cape Lookout and Beaufort. The author developed each character in a light and funny manner; to the point that you felt that you knew each of them. It gave me a great insight into the way of life for the locals of the Outerbanks. I strongly suggest this book and especially if you have been to the Outerbanks.
A fishing tale with a lot of heart.......2004-08-06
Bill Morris has given us an entertaining mystery story filled with twists and turns, rich characters who really are characters, and a depth of detail and experience that brings the Banks to life -- even for someone who's never been there in person. The saltwater cowboys are the salt of the earth, but they're one step ahead of the city slickers who try to take advantage of them. When does the movie come out?
A great read!.......2004-07-16
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The best part about it is the richness of the characters. I did not want to say goodbye to Dodge, Pogy, Ilse, and Johnny when I finished the book. This book gave me a better understanding of a culture that deserves more attention than it receives. It also made me want to move to the beach and become a fisherwoman. A superb mix of humor, sincerity, political intrigue, and good ole' fish stories. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
A photographic essay by prizewinning, National Geographic photographer, Medford Taylor, this book contains his best photos of the Pony Penning at Chincoteague taken over thirty years. Also included are the people of the Chincoteague Island, and gorgeous shots of the ponies in their natural habitat on neighboring Assateague Island, a national wildlife reserve.
Anyone who loves horses, and especially Misty of Chincoteague, will cherish and enjoy this book. It features nearly 100 pages of color photographs, many of the world-famous Chincoteague roundup. Taylor compares the event to one of the last cattle stations in the Australian outback, which he covered for National Geographic, saying that the two places are among a few where "real cowboys are still riding real horses and doing the job."
Like rounding up wild horses, photojournalism has its risks. During one penning, Taylor sank in mud and was trapped in a narrow fence opening as the herd galloped toward him. Seemingly out of nowhere, a rider appeared. Reaching down from his horse, the cowboy pulled Taylor out of harm's way just as the ponies rushed through the opening.
"It was just like in the movies," Taylor said. "My shoes are still out there under the mud."

Excellent Book.......2005-08-02
This photo-essay is breathtaking. You feel as though you are there. I gave this book as a gift to a 13 year old girl and she adores it. Well worth the money. Highly recommended.
