Book Description
RPC, or remote procedure calling, is the ability to distribute parts of a program to other computers on a network. An RPC facility manages the exchange of data between computers to make remote execution tranparent to the user. Distributed applications based on RPC can utilize distributed network resources and increase significantly the computing power brought to bear on complex problems. An RPC facility is the fundamental element of a distributed computing environment. The book builds a working understanding of RPC programming through examples. Sun RPC, the de facto standard on UNIX systems, is covered in detail. Interprocess communication and other related UNIX programming topics are also covered. The standard-issue RPC documentation is difficult to understand and lacks real-world examples. There are, in addition, many techniques to learn. This book, written from a programmer's perspective, shows you what you can do with RPC and presents a framework for learning it. Contents include:
- Foundations of remote procedure calling; what it is, how it works, and which vendors support it.
- What RPC offers to application and product developers. How RPC fits into a distributed computing environment.
- ONC and DCE, a comparison of their similarities and differences.
- How to develop, debug, and deploy networked applications.
- Understanding the interprocess control (IPC) mechanisms on which RPC is based.
- Using remote procedure calling in parallel/distributed processing and scheduling.
- Using remote procedure calling with windowing systems.
- Examples of distributed applications using both single and multiple concurrent servers.
Customer Reviews:
Old and in need of Update.......2004-02-20
I feel that this book needs to be updated. It makes so many statements that even a newbie such as I can tell are outdated, that the entire content of the book is cast into doubt. How can I tell whether or not I should believe any given sentence? I find myself in the position of needing to independently verify almost every statement, and who has time for that? I came here hoping for a newer edition that I could feel more confident about, and am very disappointed not to find one. Judging from other references (e.g. the Solaris 8 "ONC+ Reference Manual," at docs.sun.com -- on the topic of using RPC with threads, for example), the technology has changed over the last 12 years, to the point where I for one don't trust this book.
bloody awful.......2004-01-27
This is possibly the worst pile of trash I have EVER read in my life. Please don't buy this complete pile of rubbish. In fact I think I'm going to wipe my backside with it.
The value of this work depends on you.......2003-09-30
As with any book the value you get out of it depends on what you already know or can extrapolate. The book has a clearly defined target audience is assumed to have some knowledge of the C programming language and UNIX. For those not familiar with IPC there are some added chapters. Some exposure to the X windows system is expected.
An RPC system is a collection of software necessary to support remote procedure call programming and the necessary run time services.
This book can carry you thro from the concepts to the practical. As with any universal book there will be many variations of environment that are not anticipated. However using system specific references and your unique environment information combined with this book should result in practical applications in less time than trying to set up from the RFC's.
I suggest you take in the information in small chunks and try the examples before moving on. There are plenty of diagrams to help you with the theory.
The Bottom line of RPC is to save big bucks by allowing the end user access to the computing power of the network systems at minimal cost.
I would not recommend this book for RPC beginners.......2001-06-21
The presentation is very informal and brief. It is very hard for a beginner to have a clear picture of RPC by reading this book.
All you need to fully understand the details of RPC.......2001-02-13
This is imho the reference for RPC.
This book keeps the usual high standard for O'Reilly nutshell books. Yes, this should be seen more as a reference than as an introduction or beginners book, though it covers all important topics and pitfalls to avoid.
If you want the best reference and most comprehensive explanation on RPC and how to use it, this is the book to get.
Danger: As with all of the better O'Reilly "reference/nutshell" books: it may not be very easy to read. The book assumes a fair good understanding of networking and protocol issues. I think someone looking for a introduction or beginners guide will be very dissapointed. This is what makes O'Reilly nutshell books good, they fill the sorely lacking area of deep and detailed books covering all gory detail but does not spend a lot(read: anything at all) of space for the beginner. You will have to think quite a lot to understand it and reading it from cover to cover WILL take a lot of time. If you are aware of this and wants a comprehensive book which goes through everything, this is the one to get.
It is easier to read than RFC1050 and does explain some very very tricky concepts/areas which the RFC just assumes are obvious or assumes you should figure out yourself.
I recommend this book.

Book Description
An insider's view of the investment banking world from someone who is actually shaping it
Powerful, controversial and determined, Thomas Weisel is known for his unwavering focus on winning the race, whether he is competing in a national cycling championship, sponsoring Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong or negotiating with business competitors. For twenty-seven years he ran one of the major investment banks on the West Coast, bringing public companies such as Applied Materials, Siebel Systems and Yahoo! and was instrumental in establishing San Francisco as an alternative financial center to Wall Street. In 1997 he sold his company to NationsBank, which later merged with Bank of America. Unhappy with his treatment after the merger, Weisel trumped Bank of America by negotiating a separation package that included $500 million in stock options and the ability to hire away crucial Bank of America management. Within two years, the investment bank he started, Thomas Weisel Partners, reached half a billion dollars in revenues and negotiated high-profile deals such as Yahoo!'s merger with Geocities. Power Investor weaves Weisel's approach to success, his competitive nature and love of cycling into a fascinating inside account of the cutthroat world of investment banking.
Thomas Weisel (San Francisco, CA) is the founder, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Thomas Weisel Partners, a research-driven merchant bank exclusively focused on the growth sectors of the U.S. economy. He is founder and president of Tailwind Sports, which manages the U.S. Postal Service cycling team, and was an Olympic-class speed skater and the former chairman of the U.S. Ski Foundation.
Richard Brandt (San Francisco, CA) has twenty years' experience as a leading business journalist. He was a senior reporter for BusinessWeek for fourteen years and editor in chief of the technology business magazine Upside for four years.
Customer Reviews:
GAACK!.......2004-07-25
I am in a unique position to comment on this book as I was the copyeditor on it. Previous to this I could not reveal my opinions, but I am no longer employed by the company I worked for at that time, and ever since I read this piece of puke, I've wanted to tell somebody--anybody!--how horrific it is. Thom Weisel is a royal b**tard with an equally king-sized ego, and about 99% of the book is him bragging on himself. Don't think Brandt is the author--Thommy boy had his hands firmly on the reins the whole way through, BELIEVE ME BECAUSE HE MADE FIFTY THOUSAND CHANGES AT EVERY STAGE OF THE PUBLICATION PROCESS!!! Note also that almost every one of these changes was to make the book even more self-aggrandizing than it started out. If you love reading the inflated-headed ramblings of a narcissistic egotist, this one is for you, but if bloated self-smooching turns you off the least bit, prepare to never stop throwing up.
And now, for my final question: Why doesn't he just sleep with Lance Armstrong and get it over with?
I feel so much better now!
Compelling Portrait of an Über-Capitalist.......2003-06-10
Amid the expanding shelves of business biographies and dot com tell-alls, this portrait of Silicon Valley investment banker Thomas Weisel stands almost mythically taller than the others. It's not just that Weisel survived and thrived despite first the disastrous sale of his company to NationsBank and then the tech downturn. Nor is it just that Weisel is a bold and canny business thinker and a charismatic leader who inspires loyalty and near-reverence among employees and clients alike. More than anything, what fascinates is the feedback loop between Weisel's workaholic style and his consuming passion for skiing and cycling--a passion that led him first to successfully reconfigure the U.S. Olympic ski team organization, and then to put together the winning U.S. Postal Service cycling team led by Lance Armstrong. One only wonders how such an obviously brilliant man could have such simpleminded and even incoherent libertarian politics.
Author Richard Brandt, a veteran technology journalist from Business Week and the now-defunct Upside Magazine, makes use of his long intimacy with the tech sector business world to situate Weisel's career within the historical context of Silicon Valley's rise, hysterical boom and return to reality.
Next time pick your writer better.......2003-05-08
I'm an I-Banker and enjoy reading biographies of exceptional businessmen. Sandy Weill's recent biography comes to mind as a personal favorite. Since Tom Weisel is an exceptional athlete with many interests similar to mine, I thought I would enjoy this read. Frankly, it's very painful.
First of all, the two-page summary at the end of each chapter written by Weisel would have been a great framework around which to write a biography. But the actual chapters read like a paid self-promotion or someone in the throes of hero-worship. The author consistently talks of what a great athlete Weisel is while making sure he mentions that Weisel never brags about his athletic prowess. No need to given that the writer will glorify the results. Even concerning business the writer manages to find a positive in every event. For example, the original partners split up and start a competing firm but there is no attempt to mention if Weisel's faults could have had any impact. Of course, per this book, he has no faults.
Weisel eventually merges the successful but controversial Montgomery Securities into Nationsbank but after trumpeting this as a great deal, it merges poorly so blame is completely placed on Nationsbank. Now, of course anyone living this large competitive life must trade-in for a 24-year-old trophy wife when he is 49. Unfortunately there is never a significant mention of the break-up of his first marriage other than what a great father he is and how involved he is with all his kids.
This book is so filled with braggadocio that if Weisel were really interested in keeping the profile of a respected businessman, he would have done his best to limit his exposure to this book. Tom Weisel may very well be a great man but great men do not need to have this much said about them in this forum. I'm shocked he agreed to allow his name to be included in this work, as it is not becoming.
Great read, funny and smart.......2003-04-09
I loved "Capitol Instincts" and you will, too. It is a quick, enjoyable and often very funny read. For those of us who know far too little about the world of investment banking (and for that matter, art investing and high level sports) it is an easy way to gain insight and important knowledge.
I enjoyed the way Brandt took you from the history up to hot off the press issues changing the face of banking today, as well as very intriguing backroom dealmaking. He reveals a master dealmaker at work.
Weisel's sections keep the info coming, with his pointed valuable advice to entrepreneurs and investors.
The sections on sports and art were fascinating. Again, Brandt delivers depth with fascinating details and insight on his subjects. And it is fast and fun all the way.
Buy it, read it, send copies to all your friends. This book is hot, fast, easy and fun to read!
I can't wait to see what this hot author will tackle next!
A good read.......2003-03-30
This is a well-written, informative book, surprisingly so considering it's an authorized biography of an investment banker. Wiesel is a legend, and this book let's me see what makes him tick, revealing a bitmore I think than he might actualy want us to see. I found it fascinating to see the link between investment bankers and atheletes until I realized both are among the most competitive activities in our society. I was astounded at what this hard-boiled wheeler and dealer did for Lance Armstrong when no one else would go near him. Maybe he has a heart of gold, or may he just saw a good investment where others didn't. It's well written and never lags. I recommend it to anyone who wants to see the insider of investment banking, from an unsentimental and informative perspective.

Book Description
The Southern Andes, stretching from the subtropics to the subantarctic, are ideally located for palaeoenvironmental research. Over the broad and continuous latitudinal extent of the cordillera
(-24˚), vegetation is adjusted to climatic gradients and atmospheric circulation patterns.
Opposed to the prevailing Southern Westerlies, the Southern Andes are positioned to receive the brunt of the winds, while biota are set to record the shifting of incoming storm systems over time. Sequential, latitudinally-placed, sedimentary deposits containing microfossils and macroremains, as archives of past vegetation and climate, make possible the detection of equatorward and poleward displacement of plant communities and, as a consequence, changes in climatic controls. No terrestrial setting in the Southern Hemisphere is so unique for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction during and since the last ice age. Twenty radiocarbon-dated fossil pollen and spore records chosen to place emphasis on the last ice age include high-resolution, submillennial data sets that also cover the Holocene, thus providing contrast between present interglacial and past glacial ages. From a refined data base, the records constitute the foundation for interpreting factors responsible for vegetation change over >50,000
14C years, glacial-interglacial migration and refugial patterns for a diversity of taxa, and the extent of intrahemispheric and polar hemispheric synchroneity versus asynchroneity.

Book Description
Elastic waves possess some remarkable properties and it is these that explain their important role in the processing of electronic signals and the sensing of physical quantities. For example, they can be generated by localized or distributed sources, can propagate in the core or on the surface of optically transparent or opaque solids, have velocities one hundred thousand times less than those of electromagnetic waves, and they can modify the characteristics of a light beam. The purpose of this second volume is to illustrate the functions fulfilled by the free and guided waves described in Vol. I. It deals with the generation of bulk waves using piezoelectric resonators, generation of surface waves by interdigital transducers, interaction between elastic waves and light waves, acousto-electronic filters, acousto-optic components, sensors and instruments.

Hilarious Look At the Fabulous World Of Scrapbooking.......2007-01-21
Wendy Bagley is a hoot...she has an incredibly keen sense of humor and birds eye view of the scrapbooking world. Even her chapter titles are enough to elicit a chuckle or two. If you're a scrapper or know a scrapper, this book will give you a laugh and an insight or two into the world of scrapbooking.
I read it through in one evening...couldn't put it down. The chapters are short and so engaging that you just can't resist turning the next page. The perfect gift for a scrapper or yourself. I highly recommend it!
Excellent Essays for Mothers.......2006-08-13
This book is way overdue! Its essays are poignant, amusing, and the author comes across as if you are her best friend. Bless this book for getting me off the hook for not being the perfect mother, sister, friend, person. Very funny, very good.
Not a How-to, but a very funny Why-to! .......2006-05-01
Every page of this book of essays made me laugh, if not wildly, then unexpectedly. Nearly every page of my copy of SCRAPS is earmarked or underlined in part for a funny sentence or paragraph that I plan to reread. The author gives us a wonderfully twisted look at screwy women who scrapbook (or don't, and wish they did). I love-uh-love-uh-LOVED it!
Need a Good Belly Laugh?.......2005-12-17
This book is just hilarious! The mildly seasoned scrapbooker with even a hint of a sense of humor will find themselves bursting out laughing at any moment-I sometimes read a chapter in the middle of the night if I am having trouble sleeping and have been quite worried I might awaken the entire household with my laughter! This book sounds just like something my sister-in-law would write, so I often hear her voice reading it to me :-) Yes, at one point the author even refers to the reader as "Missy" just as she does with me on occasion! I have never met Wendy Bagley, but if she has a tiny bit stage presence, I think she would be a great stand up comedian at one of those big nationally sponsored Crops. So, yes, be sure you buy this book for yourself and any other scrapbookers you know who might benefit from a good belly laugh.
Supremely Funny!.......2005-11-18
This hilarious sendup of scrapbooking is funny from the first page. From there on it only gets better. Each essay takes a look at the obsessions and passions of people who are crazy about their family, friends, and photos. When she's not being funny, the author can actually be touching. This book made me look at my sweet wife in a new light.

Book Description
Scraps: Adventures In Scrapbooking takes a funny look at what crops up in the lives of scrapaholics; queen croppers; 35mm Mommas; and women on the cutting edge. Vigorously subjective yet sloppy with syntax, Wendy W. Bagley gets the important stuff right or at least written and she gives readers an abundance of laugh-out-loud information covering everything from the history of scrapbooking and its culture to the subtleties of scrapbooking with or without exclamation points. This collection of scrapbook humor offers thousands of words and dozens of chapters including and namely: Surefire Photo Safety; Scraps Of Wisdom; A Pen For Your Thoughts; The Grim Scrapper; Everybody Smile; The Final Cut; Put On A Happy Face; Crop In The Name Of Love; Man-made Scrapbooks; History Of Scrapbooking; How To Start A Scrapbooking Business; and Photos Are Forever. As entertaining as it is constructive, Scraps is required reading for all scrapbookers and suggested reading for anyone who sees a future in chronicling her past.
