Customer Reviews:
The new phone book is here!.......2005-10-07
So... have phone books become outdated in the world of on-line access? No, because not everyone has a computer or on-line access. But isn't a "yellow pages" of websites by subject rather useless with the abundance of search engines. Perhaps not as much as I originally thought... I got a chance to review Que's Internet Yellow Pages (2006 Edition) by Joe Kraynak, and the concept of a "paper search directory" does have a few merits...
The book (all 1100 plus pages) looks nearly identical to a real yellow pages directory. The web sites don't have ads, but the contents are listed by subject matter (like Reference or Cigars), and then the sites are listed alphabetically within those areas. Each entry has the title, the web address, and a brief description as to what the site offers (or how it's different than others like it). There are also some icons that help you get a bit more out of the directory. There's a "Best" icon given to the site that the author deems the best in that category. The dollar sign icon means you can purchase stuff on-line. The usability guide is one to five stars that rank how easy it is to find information. And finally, there are children ratings that indicate the appropriateness of the site for different age groups. It's well designed to find the information, and to get a feel for what you'll be visiting before you get there.
So back to the main issue... Why is this any different, never mind "better", than a search directory like Yahoo? It's a legitimate question, as I always used to snicker when I saw this book in the bookstores. But after leafing through the pages, I'm of a different opinion now. Online directories are driven by a single focus. You go on-line to find information about subject "X", and that's all you search for. You may miss other sites of interest due to a bad keyword choice, or you may not even know that other sites on similar subjects exist. And it's for sure you're not going to get much meta information about the site, such as the age target or how easy it is to navigate. The book gives you that advantage. And there's something to be said for finding an interesting subject and going off on a side trip that could pay unexpected benefits. Searching for specific terms make that much more unlikely. This book gives you the chance to broaden your view and allow various ideas to grab your attention...
Does this book replace or challenge Yahoo and Google? Not hardly. Searching for specific information is still something that the search engines excel in. But if you're looking for opinions on sites covering a subject, or if you just want to "surf something new that you've never though of before", the Yellow Pages might offer some interesting insights and diversions... Not a "must have" book, but it did force me to change my view and way of looking at search directories...

Book Description
In Risk, Reliability, Uncertainty and Robustness of Water Resources Systems, thirty-five leading scientists provide state-of-the-art reviews of topical areas of research on water resources systems, including aspects of extreme hydrological events: floods and droughts, water quantity and quality, dams, reservoirs and hydraulic structures, evaluating sustainability and climate change impacts. As well as discussing essential challenges and research directions, the book will assist in applying theoretical methods to the solution of practical problems in water resources.
Book Description
Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) has been one of the fastest growing problem areas in many disciplines. The central problem is how to evaluate a set of alternatives in terms of a number of criteria. Although this problem is very relevant in practice, there are few methods available and their quality is hard to determine. Thus, the question `Which is the best method for a given problem?' has become one of the most important and challenging ones.
This is exactly what this book has as its focus and why it is important. The author extensively compares, both theoretically and empirically, real-life MCDM issues and makes the reader aware of quite a number of surprising `abnormalities' with some of these methods. What makes this book so valuable and different is that even though the analyses are rigorous, the results can be understood even by the non-specialist.
Audience: Researchers, practitioners, and students; it can be used as a textbook for senior undergraduate or graduate courses in business and engineering.
Customer Reviews:
Worst MCDM book.......2004-10-07
I was really surprised how such a book can be published. It deals only with AHP! AHP! AHP! [If you would like to know more about Analytic Hierarchy Process[AHP] - Just buy books written by Saaty ] and very little about other decision making techniques . Triantaphyllou's book has no organization and clear structure. Believe me you will end up learning nothing from this book. There are several other good books which are available better look for it folks
A comprehensive study on AHP and other popular MCDM methods.......2001-08-10
This is a very good book for people who are involved in evaluating different alternatives and each alternative has its own strengths and weaknesses. It is also a very good reference for students and researchers who are studying/working in the area of decision analysis. It is especially useful for people who are interested in trying to find out which MCDM method is the best and who have used or intend to use the AHP method in their work or research. It has extensive and intensive coverage on the AHP method for ranking alternatives, other pairwise comparison methods for extracting weights, their shortcomings and improvement, and their comparisons with other popular MCDM methods. The discussions on the ranking abnormalities of the AHP method and its revised versions are very informative. The comparisons are supported using numerous numerical examples, the conclusions are convincing, and the contents easy to understand.
A must-read for practioners and researchers. Excellent!.......2001-07-12
I read this book with great interest. I am a Faculty Member at the New York University. This book is very clear to the point. I liked very much the in-depth analyses of many real-life MCDM issues and also the many numerical examples. The computational results are very thorough and revealing. The first book of its kind. An Excellent piece of work!!!
Comments from Dr. E. Triantaphyllou, email: trianta@lsu.edu.......2001-06-01
Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) has been one of the fastest growing problem areas during at least the last two decades. Thus, due to the importance of this field, many MCDM methods have been proposed. Ironically, often these methods contradict each other when they are posed to solve the same decision problem. This, in turn, has increased the confusion in MCDM theory and practice.
As Professor H.-J. Zimmermann from Aachen, Germany, remarked in the foreword for this book, this is exactly where this book has its focus and why it is that important: Rather than suggesting another MCDM method without any convincing justification, this book concentrates on the best known and most frequently used methods, compares them extensively and makes the reader aware of quite a number of "abnormalities" of some of the methods of which users are often not conscious. The book also considers very critically the most touchy points in solving real MCDM problems, namely, the quantification of qualitative data, how to derive relative weights of importance from ratio and difference comparisons, and also how to perform a sensitivity analysis with many MCDM methods.
This book provides a unique perspective into the core of MCDM methods and practice. Many theoretical and empirical analyses are presented and are complementary to each other. This allows the reader to gain a deep theoretical and practical insight into the topics covered in this book. In addition, the author offers at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book suggestions for further research. More information on this book can be found in the personal web site of the author which is located at the Louisiana State University in the U.S.A.
A nice book!.......2001-05-12
I enjoyed reading it! Nice exposition of the various subjects.

Book Description
This monograph discusses Lundberg approximations for compound distributions with special emphasis on applications in insurance risk modeling. These distributions are somewhat awkward from an analytic standpoint, but play a central role in insurance and other areas of applied probability modeling such as queueing theory. Consequently, the material is of interest to researchers and graduate students interested in these areas. The material is self-contained, but an introductory course in insurance risk theory is beneficial to prospective readers. Lundberg asymptotics and bounds have a long history in connection with ruin probabilities and waiting time distributions in queueing theory, and have more recently been extended to compound distributions. This connection has its roots in the compound geometric representation of the ruin probabilities and waiting time distributions. A systematic treatment of these approximations is provided, drawing heavily on monotonicity ideas from reliability theory. The results are then applied to the solution of defective renewal equations, analysis of the time and severity of insurance ruin, and renewal risk models, which may also be viewed in terms of the equilibrium waiting time distribution in the G/G/1 queue. Many known results are derived and extended so that much of the material has not appeared elsewhere in the literature. A unique feature involves the use of elementary analytic techniques which require only undergraduate mathematics as a prerequisite. New proofs of many results are given, and an extensive bibliography is provided. Gordon Willmot is Professor of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. His research interests are in insurance risk and queueing theory. He is an associate editor of the North American Actuarial Journal.

Book Description
This volume includes the five lecture courses given at the CIME-EMS School on "Stochastic Methods in Finance" held in Bressanone/Brixen, Italy 2003. It deals with innovative methods, mainly from stochastic analysis, that play a fundamental role in the mathematical modelling of finance and insurance: the theory of stochastic processes, optimal and stochastic control, stochastic differential equations, convex analysis and duality theory. Five topics are treated in detail: Utility maximization in incomplete markets; the theory of nonlinear expectations and its relationship with the theory of risk measures in a dynamic setting; credit risk modelling; the interplay between finance and insurance; incomplete information in the context of economic equilibrium and insider trading.

From the author: This paper presents pure capital rationing and selection of the best capital project mix when cash flows and available budgets are uniformly distributed random variables. Chance-constrained programming is used by approximating uniformly distributed random variables into normally distributed ones. Thus, a methodology is proposed to handle uniformly distributed random variables in capital rationing. The accuracy of the results is checked using the Monte-Carlo simulation technique. A literature review on the inclusion of risk into capital investment decisions using chance- constrained programming is also provided.

Book Description
This book introduces the concepts and methods of spatial statistics to geologists and engineers working with oil and gas data, and covers all of the most commonly encountered geostatistical methods for estimation and simulation.
Topics include calculation and modeling of semivariograms, linear methods of kriging, cokriging, nonlinear methods such as indicator kriging and disjunctive kriging, and conditional simulation, including sequential indicator simulation, sequential Gaussian simulation, and simulated annealing. Semivariogram models range from very simple to complex. All of the fundamental semivariogram models are illustrated, along with anisotropic models, hole effects, geometric and zonal models, and the mechanics of fitting models.
For each geostatistical method treated in detail, the author introduces necessary theory and background, describes how the method works, the steps a user must go through, and problems a user might encounter.
The emphasis throughout is on what the practitioner needs to know, and the results that can be expected. The book is replete with examples in two and three dimensions, using real-world data such as porosity and permeability, gas production, structural elevation of a reservoir, and seismic information.
Geostatistics and Petroleum Geology will be an invaluable advanced-level text for students on petroleum engineering and geosciences courses, as well as an important reference for petroleum geologists and petroleum engineers in oil companies worldwide.

Book Description
This book contains selected contributions from the Workshop on Geostatistical Simulations, which was held in Fontainebleau, May 1993.
The papers included are an accurate reflection of the current debates, applications and research interests in geostatistical simulation.
Nowadays, in addition to the original turning bands method, there are several other established methods of geostatistical simulation. The continued development of these methods is driven by problems encountered in the implementation of existing methods, e.g. the search for more efficient algorithms, the desire to incorporate new variables such as (geometrical or geological) shapes, the perceived need to eliminate parametric approaches, and the new end-uses of simulated images or models.
A number of the most important questions raised are:
- How are simulation methods and simulated images to be assessed?
- What properties of simulated images are inherent in the methods used to obtain the images?
- Are some methods more suitable to specific applications than others?

Book Description
The contributions in this book were presented at the Fourth International Geostatistics Congress held in Tróia, Portugal, in September 1992. They provide a comprehensive account of the current state of the art of geostatistics, including recent theoretical developments and new applications. In particular, readers will find descriptions and applications of the more recent methods of stochastic simulation together with data integration techniques applied to the modelling of hydrocabon reservoirs. In other fields there are stationary and non-stationary geostatistical applications to geology, climatology, pollution control, soil science, hydrology and human sciences. The papers also provide an insight into new trends in geostatistics particularly the increasing interaction with many other scientific disciplines.
This book is a significant reference work for practitioners of geostatistics both in academia and industry.

Book Description
This book offers a series of contributions written by scientists interested in a philosophical reflection on recent advances of science. Profound scientific theorems in modern mathematics and physics shed new light on two fundamental questions often only implicitly dealt with: is mathematical truth a purely man-made construction and is the physical reality behind the phenomena at least in principle always observable? The answers to both questions are closely related to the possible existence of an omniscient and omnipotent being. In this sense mathematical undecidability and quantum nonlocality are proposed as a possible road to metaphysical principles and eventually to God.
The reader will find generally understandable presentations of recent results from mathematics, like the theorems of Gödel and Turing, and physics, mostly related to EPR Gedanken experiments and Bell's theorem. In the case of physics special attention is directed to old and new experiments supporting a nonlocal approach. Especially worth mentioning is the until now unedited contribution of the late John Bell on Bell's theorem held on 22 January 1990 in a Seminar at CERN.

The Science cannot give a global acount of the reality.......2000-11-01
This book is a compend of a serie of articles which have a common point: all of them coincide in the idea of that Science (specially Mathematics and Physics) are "incomplete" sciences, i.e. they cannot give a global acount of the universe and its rules.
The book is not strictly speaking a demonstration of the existence of God. The scope is to give reasons -scientific reasons- for why a scientist should be opened to the idea of an intelillence superior, who would order the universe.
There are three sections: The first one try to demonstrate, based in Goedel's theorem, the incompleteness of Mathematics. The second one is centered on the limits of modern Physics, taking into acount the predictions of Quantum Mechaniscs. And the third one gives a global review of how this limitations in modern Science can be related to the question of the existence of God.
The good point of the book is that it is not a negative criticism to modern Science. It is but an analisys of the real conclussions that Science can reach, and what lies beyond its limits.
After reading this book, one get the impression that there is a lot to investigate in Science Phylosophy, and that in the future the mankind will reach a lot of development in this area.

Mythical Madness.......2007-07-12
With the popularity of "Shrek" and "Harry Potter" I'm a bit surprised this hasn't had more of a resurgence. I read this series years ago and have wondered since why they weren't made into a series of movies. "Shrek" is along the same lines but not quite the same as the stories by Robert Asprin. If you want a good laugh be sure to read them. Full of puns, they center around an apprentice wizard named Skeeve and a large lizard like demon named Aahz from Pervect. Aahz takes upon the responsibility of training Skeeve when the master wizard that summoned him dies. They have some wonderfully funny adventures and meet all types of interesting characters. They live in a land of mythical humanoids and creatures. Great for all ages. These are two of the most entertaining books I have ever read.
One of my favorite lighthearted fantasy series.......2007-07-12
Perhaps one of the best fantasy series I have read(although there are a few bumps in the road of course), the Myth stories are much different than your standard epic fantasy novels.
Lighthearted and hilarious, Robert Asprin blends in his own humour into the entertaining narration and plot, but most of the humour stems out from his extremely loveable characters. By all standards, this is a great series, and one you surely do not want to miss.
I couldn't love this book anymore.......2007-07-07
One of the things that most interests me in novels are the characters. If the characters arent dynamic, interesting, and unique, I can't read the book.
Perhaps thats why I love comedy so much, and can hardly stand things like horrors.
The reason I am saying this is because the cast of characters in all of Robert Asprin's books are all of those things, plus they are loveable, flamboyant, and hilarious.
The plot line in his books are interesting yet hilarious, and its hard to read this book without bursting out laughing many times through.
Indeed, after reading through this series at least 10 times, whenever I read these books, my lowest reaction is a huge grin.
So buy this book and enjoy. You will love it as much as I do.
Wonderful!.......2006-01-05
Another Fine Myth/Myth Conceptions was a real joy to read. The story starts with a young would-be-thief who has changed professions to become a wizard apprentice. However, as he is being taught one day, his master is killed by assassins, at the exact moment when he was summoning a demon from another world. Fortunately for Skeeve the apprentice, the demon was spelled, and is powerless to use his magic. Unfortunately, the demon is a good creature and wants to continue to teach Skeeve magic so they can get to the bottom of the mystery, and the Demon may someday be able to return home.
The story is a great little tale, with countless subtle jokes and references that only a sharp reader can catch. As the two travel the lands seeking clues, they encounter all sorts of strange people, including inept demon hunting templar, ruthless merchants from other dimensions, and a beautiful girl who also happens to have a mysterious background. The end of the second book has Skeeve and his strange allies setting up to battle a much larger army, and its a fight you dont want to miss!
This is an easy read, and will create a more than rewarding few hours.
If you do buy this book, make sure you get the "double volume" and not just the first book. Also, there are about 10 sequels that you can expect to buy, as this series is just that good, and that's no myth.

Good Book.......2005-12-22
Good book, I recommend it to children ages 8-12, was a bit too young for me, 12, though. captivating story, interesting plot, not much bad to say about it.
