Book Description

In JavaServer Pages 2.0, Sun has added new features that make it even easier to create dynamic, interactive Web pages in Java. These include a built-in expression language and a library of tags (the JSP Standard Tag Library) that facilitate creation of pages.

Sams Teach Yourself JavaServer Pages 2.0 in 24 Hours starts with the basics of JSP, and explains the expression language, JSTL, creating new tags and more. Each lesson builds on the previous one, giving you a full picture of JSP development. Later chapters describe how to incorporate XML, interface with larger Java applications, work with popular frameworks such as Struts, and more. The book includes Apache Tomcat, Sun's reference implementation of JSP, so you can start developing applications immediately.

Book Description

Sams Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours is a step-by-step tutorial that teaches someone with no previous programming experience how to create simple Java programs and applets.

It starts out at a lower level than Sams Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days, and takes things at a slower pace, focusing on key programming concepts and essential Java basics.

Although the basic structure of the book, and many of its examples, will remain the same in this new edition, the author will make use of dozens of reader comments to make improvements to explanatory text and example programs.

This new edition of the book maintains and improves upon all these qualities, while updating, revising, and reorganizing the material to cover the latest developments in Java and to expand the book's coverage of core Java programming topics.

5 out of 5 stars teach yourself java.......2006-06-15

New programmers pan this book because learning to program takes more than 24 hours. CS graduates pan this book because they already know it. Let's pretend for a second that this isn't a Java for experts book, or a computer programming for total neophytes book.

I find that this is a very good and stury backgrounding in Java for people who already know how to program.

It's a hard truth that no matter what book you pick up, learning your first programming language is a rocky start. You may put down this book in disgust and resolve to learn a different language that may be easier, but your search will end in frustration. From my experience, Sams books have been the easiest language tutorial books I've ever read. The book alone may not be enough for a total neophyte, a willingness to bite the bullet and commit yourself to playing with the language is necessary. The sun site has Excellent documentation, I suggest you get acquainted with it if you aren't.

N00bs don't know how good they've got it with Java. Yeah, objects are weird, yeah, compiling it is finicky. However, i defy you to find a more easily and widely available compiler. You can do all sorts of awesome stuff with freely available softwre, all within the comfort of your precious windows.

But anyway, I found this book to be a quick and easy backgrounding in how to get the basic things done in Java. I got a head start with a CS degree, and I blazed through it in a day, but I have a comfortable feeling that if I need to implement a gui, or event handling, or graphics, I've got an excellent starting point.

The author is also extremely totally random. Ever wonder how to say hello world in esperanto? Wondering what underwear the author is wearing, or how to invalidate the warranty on your frigidaire icemaker? Did you know it's colly birds, not calling birds? You will, and it will be weird.

Now if only i could find a similar book about J2EE.

2 out of 5 stars The eBook digital version is a ripoff!.......2005-06-24

Although the original idea behind providing the book as a PDF was admirable, the publisher does not allow the digital file to be edited. I can understand setting the security feature for printing due to copyrights, but for those of us that have made the investment into the Full version of Acrobat and use the commenting features extensively, the security settings do not allow the saving of comments made to the file (highlighting, underlining and comment boxes) while reading the file. This pretty much makes the file useless. Complaints to Amazon, Adobe and the publisher have resulted in a lot of heinous finger pointing as to who controls the security settings. This is a real shame, since the content of the book is very good. One can only hope that the publisher enrolls in an Acrobat course. Oh wait...the training materials will be in PDF, won't they...

3 out of 5 stars Java in 24 hours.......2005-04-18

Not a bad book.

I would recommend it to beginners, but it is a very slow process of learning, unlike the other books I've read. After all, it is for beginners!

If you do read this book, don't worry if you don't understand it, you will as you read on.

4 out of 5 stars A good foundation.......2005-03-16

I'm coming from a solid VBA background and am now switching gears and decided to learn Java. I found this book to be at a good pace and the humor helps to keep you from becoming too frustrated. It certainly takes more than 24 hours, but I don't think the title was meant literally. It took me about 3-4 months to get through it and that's skipping the last 4 chapters, which deal with graphics & sound, stuff I don't really need yet. I have a day job, which involves programming, so I couldn't do it everyday or I'd would have gotten burned out.

1 out of 5 stars Fustrating.......2005-03-13

This is the book where I first learnt about arrays and OOP. Starting with an example with the tochararray function was really confusing. This book just fired information. You might like that, but the details are hard to understand.
Even now, I still don't understand OOP.
Functions presented to you aren't really done well. I found too many of the "it'll be later explained in later chapters" way too hard to follow. You aren't even ready for that stuff. Can't you have better examples; examples that don't need the advanced stuff?
Arrays. It was too confusing about multidimensional and singular arrays.
I gave this book up before the end of the hour on OOP
I can't recommend this book if you want to learn JAVA as another language to know. Although I haven't read the one in 21 days, it should be relatively better. I didn't understand my fave lang. C by Tony Zhang writing in 24 hours, but with the guys in 21 days.

Overall, this is not a good book; it doesn't seem like any of the 24 hours books is any good.

This book focuses on the diverse impact of forest history in general, and of forest continuity, fragmentation and past management in particular, on the diversity and distribution of species. The implications for the conservation of biodiversity in forests are also addressed. Chapters have been developed from papers presented at a conference held in Leuven in January 2003. The emphasis is on temperate forests in Europe and North America, but the information may also be applicable to other regions or biomes.

                    Book Description

The aim of this book is to acquaint the reader with what the author regards as the most basic characteristics of quasicrystals — structure, formation and stability, properties — in relationship with the applications of quasicrystalline materials.

Quasicrystals are fascinating substances that form a family of specific structures with strange physical and mechanical properties as compared to those of metallic alloys. This, on the one hand, is stimulating intensive research to understand the most basic properties of quasicrystals in the frame of a generalized crystallography. On the other hand, these properties open the way to technological applications, demonstrated or potential, mostly regarding energy savings.

This valuable book discusses those various facets of quasicrystals in five chapters, ending with the author's own interpretation of the properties with respect to their unique structure.

Lauren Weisberger, whose bestselling debut The Devil Wears Prada outed the vicious antics of the magazine industry elite, is back at it with Everyone Worth Knowing, another cautionary tale of sex, power, and fame. This time around, the PR industry is her target, and Prada fans will recognize similar themes throughout this entertaining, if at times overly dramatic, exposé.

Bette Robinson is a twentysomething Emory graduate who shunned her parents' hippie ideals in favor of a high-paying yet excruciatingly boring job at a prestigious investment bank. One day, after a particularly condescending exchange with her boss (who sends her daily inspirational e-mails), Bette walks out on her job in a huff. After a few weeks of sleeping late, watching Dr. Phil and entertaining her dog Millington, Bette's uncle scores her a job at an up-and-coming public relations firm, where her entire job seems to revolve around staying out late partying and providing fodder for clandestine gossip columns. What follows is one episode after another of Bette climbing up the social ladder at the expense of her friends, family, and the one guy who actually seems worth pursuing.

Weisberger is clever enough to turn seemingly outrageous circumstances into amusing anecdotes, like the tale of a woman who was close to suicide until she found out she was only 18 months away from scoring a highly coveted Birkin bag ("You simply cannot kill yourself when you're that close ... it's just not an option."). This wit, combined a hint of voyeurism that most of us can't deny, is what makes Everyone Worth Knowing a guilty pleasure that's well worth the indulgence. --Gisele Toueg

The Significant Seven with Lauren Weisberger
Lauren graciously agreed to answer the questions we like to ask every author.

Q: What book has had the most significant impact on your life?
A: Very tough question. For the first half of my life, it would definitely have to be Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume. I worshipped that book. Recently, I'd say that it was Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Even though there's not a tremendous amount of action, the characters are brilliant. It's a hauntingly realistic depiction of small-town America. And the place descriptions are so compelling that the book is compulsively page-turning.

Q: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A: This is not the time for self-improvement, that's for sure--they'd all have to be 100% entertainment. For book it would have to be The Last of the California Girls, a random novel that I've read 2,000 times; for CD I would say Monster Ballads, the album of cheesy 80's love songs that I ordered from an 800-number, and for DVD, it would be Dirty Dancing, of course.

Q: What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A: That one's easy. It goes something like this: "Hi, (insert editor's name here)! Yes, of course, it's already finished. I'm just tweaking a few sentences, and I'll have the whole draft to you by Monday, latest."

Q: Describe the perfect writing environment.
A: For me, the best writing environments are all about deprivation and the removal of temptation. Therefore, anywhere on earth where there's no TV, no phone, no internet access, no friends, and no fridge is pretty much perfect.

Q: If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A: I really don't want to think about this one, but if I HAVE to, I hope it would include a few keywords like "brilliant," "supremely talented," and "drop-dead gorgeous."

Q: Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A: I'm supposed to say Hemingway or Moses or Madonna, right? It'd probably just be my sister, Dana. We already have a lot of dinners together, so I know it's a guaranteed good laugh.

Q: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A: The ability to be invisible! It would make all my current spying/stalking/staring SO much easier.

Soon after Bette Robinson quits her horrendous Manhattan banking job like the impulsive girl she's never been, the novelty of walking her four-pound dog around the unglamorous Murray Hill neighborhood wears as thin as the "What are you going to do with your life?" phone calls from her parents. Then Bette meets Kelly, head of Manhattan's hottest PR firm, and suddenly she has a brand-new job where the primary requirement is to see and be seen inside the VIP rooms of the city's most exclusive nightclubs. "An irresistible tale about what happens when a girl on the fringe enters the realm of New York's chic, party-hopping elite. On paper, Bette Robinson's life is good. At twenty-six, she's got a great deal on an apartment in Manhattan, and she's on target to become an associate at the prestigious investment bank where she works with her best friend. Her eighty-hour workweeks might keep her from socializing or dating outside her office walls -- but she's paying her dues on the well-trod path to wealth and happiness. So when Bette quits her job like the impulsive girl she's never been, she not only shocks her friends and family -- she has no idea what to do next. For months, Bette gets out and about by walking her four-pound dog around her decidedly unglamorous Murray Hill neighborhood. Then she meets Kelly, head of Manhattan's hottest PR and events planning firm, and suddenly Bette has a brand-new job where the primary requirement is to see and be seen. The work at Kelly & Company takes Bette inside the VIP rooms of the city's most exclusive nightclubs, to parties crowded with celebrities and socialites. Bette learns not to blink at the famous faces, the black Amex cards, the magnums of Cristal, or the ruthless paparazzi. Soon she's dating an infamous playboy who's great for her career but bad for her sanity -- and scaring off the one decent guy she meets. Still, as her coworkers repeatedly point out, how can you complain about a job that pays you to party? Bette has to agree -- until she begins appearing in a vicious new gossip column. That's when Bette's life on paper takes on a whole new meaning -- and she learns the line between her personal and professional lives is...invisible. "

3 out of 5 stars Took a bit to get intrigued.......2007-10-03

I bought the book at Sam's after reading "The First Assistant." It had some resemblance to "The Devil Wears Prada," but the beginning dragged on with little interest. It wasn't until Bette Robinson was connected with Phillip Weston that the book became a great read. Overall it was a good book, but I wish the beginning had a little bit more intrigue.

                      2 out of 5 stars Prada retread.......2007-09-22

Bette Robinson is much less appealing than the heroine of Lauren Weisberger's previous bestseller The Devil Wears Prada. Strike one: she claims she just drifted into her high paying, overtime-demanding bank job. Right. Bored and cranky, she quits her bank job on impulse and to enjoy a period of feckless unemployment as a stress-free vacation (even though she lives in a doorman building in a safe neighborhood, which translates to expensive rent). Strike two - a normal person would worry about making ends meet. Then her uncle sets her up with a job with an event planner, which means she gets paid to party.

The event-planning job is the equivalent of the fashion magazine in "Prada". Like the heroine in Prada, Bette initially feels fat, frumpy, and clueless about her new milieu. However, unlike the Prada heroine, Bette doesn't seem to learn anything from her travails. Without giving spoilers (which is overly generous because the plot totally parallels that of "Prada", Bette never stops acting like a version of the entitlement crowd she sets herself apart from. And strike three: other than a winning boyfriend by the end, Bette doesn't seem to have had any character development at all. Bette, like the Prada girl, is Jewish. But in this book, Judaism is less of a brand than Louis Vuitton - it says less about the characters and informs their behavior less. I had to push myself to finish this book, although the last third had more interest for me.

3 out of 5 stars Quick, fun read for the lazy day.......2007-09-08

I did enjoy reading this book, but it too closely resembled "The Devil Wears Prada." Her writing reminds me of Clive Cussler and other very popular authors where she basically sets up a template with changes of names, locations, and bosses. But it was a fun read for a lazy Sunday.

1 out of 5 stars find something better to read.......2007-09-03

Well, if you liked Weisberger's first novel, the Devil wears Prada, don't waste your time. You'll find the same basic story line, the clueless-to-this-metier girl who devotes all her time and personal life to a job that is described as fruitless and pointless and which she holds in complete disdain. The missing ingredient is the jaw-dropping central figure, her incredibly bitchy boss from 'Prada,' so the book is just boring at best. Actually, this second novel is a disfavor to 'Prada' for it underlines how little Weisberger contributed to the creation of characters or plot or anything in her first novel, which everyone knows to be autobiographical. Weisberger was just lucky to have an incredible figure to write about and her only merit is to not have that opportunity lie unexploited. Everyone Worth Knowing is just a pitiful attempt at pursuing a career in writing; Weisberger appears to be as clueless in this as her characters in their careers. NB please notify Ms. Weisberger that investment bankers do not manage client's money, that's the private bankers' job. Also, it would be extremely rare to find a successful investment banker in NYC that does not know what Hermès is. (The least she could have done is some basic research, don't you think?)

3 out of 5 stars Easy read but annoying characters.......2007-08-25

I have to admit that I actually like Lauren Weisberger's style. She writes a great prose and her books are highly enjoyable page-turners. The only problem I have with her novels is the characters and their motives. The moral seems to be far fetched and hypocritical. The heroine dutifully plays the part of a notorious play-boy's girlfriend letting him kiss her in front of cameras but then suddenly gets indignant when the pictures and stories actually make their way into tabloids. She applies for a job that requires her to work at parties on nights, holidays and week-ends (and probably is well paid too, though we hear nothing at all about the money) and then freaks out when the job interferes with her private life. She quits the job in the middle of the most important project just because there's a bit of a problem that she doesn't want to face and because she suddenly realizes that she doesn't like her co-workers. Let me remind us, that Bette didn't like anyone on her previous job in the bank too and after all, I'm not sure we're supposed to like or be friends with our colleagues. The romantic line breaks down into pieces when Sammy abruptly stops their developing relationship for whole four months simply because he's got a restaurant to open. Huh? No call during four months just because the guy is too busy with his business? I'd say that probably simply means that "he's not that into you" and then all the final scene of family and friends reunion seems as a far fetched and very unlikely happy end.

I think it's time for Ms. Weisberger to stop wasting her talent and come up with a real plot that will be worth knowing.

Need your internet fix? Need a good laugh? Wonder what Socrates (and other historical notables) would have written in his blog? Paul Davidson has hit your triangle of needs with his book, "The Lost Blogs." It is hilarious--and if you happen to be reading it on the can you'll have people wondering why there's laughter coming out of the bathroom.

It's a bit odd to read a "blog" (which is born out of an electronic format) in print, but the content is so marvelous that you forget it immediately! And best of all, no carpal tunnel syndrome from vicious mouse clicking.

There are amazing stats that say most writers only write one good book, and that the 2nd book is an enormous hurdle. But...the guy who wrote Consumer Joe, has struck again!

                      5 out of 5 stars Lost.......2006-05-08

I lost my copy of The Lost Blogs. I read it way back in March during SXSW because, hey, what better time to read a blog book then when I'm out amongst the blogeratti? I whipped through it and chuckled regularly, smirking often and unable to stifle full blown laughter in a few points. It appears I'm a sucker for 2 types of nerdy blog humor: Historical blog entries from extremely positive but naive people (when John Lennon blogs about his first meeting with Yoko Ono) and accurate portrayals of blog & web geekdom ( the 3am comment war between William Randolph Hearst and Orson Welles on Welles's Citizen Kane Blog). Paul writes lots more in that style and you should be greatful for that. Too bad I couldn't keep my head together enough to remember to pick it up off the night stand before I got in a cab and got on a plane.

I'm a little wary about books that read like blogs. The blog, by it's nature, requires some action by their readers. Click here. Respond to this. Watch this video. See these pictures. There are some points in The Lost Blogs when I want my mouse. I want access to Moses' webring. I want to see the pictures and tech specs of his Holy Portable Communication Device. The blog is a unique medium. It is not quite like writing for print which is why many bloggers turned authors aren't very good and don't produce quality work.

Thankfully, Paul is accomplished and talented in both worlds and The Lost Blogs is still an excellent read despite it's lack of hotlinks.

Maybe in the future we'll have full creative fiction blog projects adeptly put together by both skilled writers and witty web professionals who can create a real honest-to-goodness blook. Until then, though, we'll keep reading The Lost Blogs and like it.

That is if I hadn't lost our Lost Blogs in Austin.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: Don't Drink Milk While Reading "The Lost Blogs".......2006-05-07

I thought it would be a good idea to have some milk while reading this hilarious book. BIG MISTAKE.

I started laughing in mid-drink and instead of going down to my tum-tum, the dairy exploded from my nostrils and doused the person sitting next to me on the airplane.

Several apologies and cocktail napkins later, I put the experience behind me and once again immersed myself into the funny.

The book reads so easily and is so engaging, it lulled me into compIacency and I started taking several long drinks of milk without thinking. I was reading the Ghandi entry, it made me start laughing and SHWOOOSH!! Milk squirted all over my lap and splashed my neighbor once more. This time, he wasn't quite as understanding. The vibe was icy all the way to JFK.

Oh well, at least he had the window seat and I had the rest of "The Lost Blogs" to read.

As the proud of owner of a rather beat up copy of Consumer Joe, I was giddy with excitement when I received my pre-ordered copy of The Lost Blogs and let me tell you, Mr. Davidson did not let me down.

He is one funny man. I have giggled out loud and have even had a few guffaws come out of me while reading this book. I think it would make a great gift and I plan on putting it in our reception area, much like I did Consumer Joe. Clients love to read it and it makes me happy to have clients have a good laugh while they are at my place of employment. Don't we all need a good laugh sometimes?

Thank you, Paul Davidson, for making me laugh.
