Customer Reviews:
Good book if you are doing UML.......2007-05-30
This book explains the concepts of UML for someone who is looking to understand UML or needs a refresher.
An excellent and cheap textbook on UML.......2007-01-13
Considering the pricetag of textbooks on this subject, this Schaum's outline is an excellent value. This is one of those Schaum's that has enough good narrative to stand alone as a textbook on a subject. The book takes the practical stance of involving two case studies throughout that serve as subject matter for the numerous examples. One is CarMatch, which is a franchising company promotes car sharing. The other is VolBank, which is a non-profit organization matching volunteers with people and groups needing help. This book covers version 2.0 of UML. The book provides a "How To" section in each chapter in whch examples are developed from one of the two case studies. The two case studies provide examples that cover business modeling, information system development, and real-time system development.
The first two chapters of the book introduce the case studies and provide background to UML. The next twelve chapters explain the notation of UML diagrams and how to produce them. For each type of diagram there are sections on the notation, on how to produce the diagrams, on how each diagram is related to other diagrams, on how each diagram can be used in business modeling, and on how each diagram fits into the Unified Software
Development Process. Each chapter has a set of review questions with answers at the back of the book, solved problems, and supplementary problems. Chapter 15 covers the ways in which UML can be extended. The final two chapters provide information on related topics: Software tools for UML and design patterns. The book concludes with a summary of UML notation, answer pointers for the review questions, the UML Metamodel architecture, a glossary, and a bibliography.
The only thing missing from this book is more integration with tools such as Rational Rose, and more examples of coding from the UML. However, considering the price and the ground covered, I still consider this a five star book on the subject of UML.
A very useful book from a classroom perspective.......2001-05-11
When I wanted to learn C language, the second book I picked up was this same series on C [the first one being K & R, which I read later to comprehend].
This book on UML follows the same tradition of "Teach a concept then give plenty of exercises to practice what you learnt". It includes two case studies also. It also includes a chapter on Real time UML, another on OCL and another chapter on Design patterns. A very good buy for the money (16+ dollars).
Pros: Excellent book for beginners Lots of exercises to practice what you learnt. This can be a first book to read before moving into heavy weights like UML series [from awl] or Booch series [from sigs]. Coverage of Object Constraint Language
Cons: May be taking a case tool like Rational Rose or TogetherJ for implementation, as a side-by-side treatment would have made this book more comprehensive.
Overall I am very much satisfied with this book at a elementary level.

Book Description
Analyzing the field of community development banking, Parzen and Kieschnick explain how financial institutions can serve the economic development needs of communities in which they operate without sacrificing prudent banking practices. Relying on firsthand knowledge, the authors show why development banks are worthy of the attention of community development activists, financial institutions that want to improve their performance, and policymakers trying to fix the financial system. The authors describe the successes of a number of community development banks, such as South Shore Bank in Chicago, Northern Community Investment Corporation in Vermont, and Self Help Credit Union in North Carolina.
Parzen and Kieschnick explore the factors that contribute to or limit development bank effectiveness, and they focus on how banks come to terms with conflicts between serving their markets and surviving. They offer a plan for achieving the full economic development potential of development banking, including specific steps for development bankers, mainstream financial institution, government agencies, and foundations.

Interpretation and Legal Theory
ASIN: 0198264879 |
Book Description
Interpretation has emerged in recent years as one of the most interesting and important elements of legal scholarship. This collection of new essays in law and interpretation provides an overview of this important topic, written by some of the most distinguished scholars in the field. The collection assesses the role of legislative intent in the interpretation of statutes, and in determining legal standards. This collection will appeal not only to lawyers and to legal theorists, but to all scholars of legal discourse.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding contribution to the ongoing debate.......2000-06-25
The essays collected in this book provide an excellent overview of the philosophical issues which surround the nature and role of interpretation in legal thought. Each of the authors brings to the subject a unique perspective or philosophical position, and argues for it persuasively. Needless to say, the contributors are not all in agreement regarding the fundamental questions under discussion. Topics covered include the nature of interpretation generally, in art and literature as well as in law; the claim by proponents of the Critical Legal Studies movement that every application of a legal rule involves an interpretation of it, and that the open texture of law is incompatible with the demands of political liberalism; Ronald Dworkin's distinction between rules and principles, and the significance of "original intent" in the interpretation of statutory or Constitutional provisions.
While familiarity with modern analytic philosophy may not be an indispensable prerequisite to a reading of this book, it would certainly do much to enhance your understanding of the argumentation. I suspect that a reader who lacked such knowledge would find some of the essays particularly challenging. In no way is this a criticism of the book; in order to address the philosophical issues adequately it is simply necessary to discuss, for example, Wittgenstein's remarks on "rule following" in the Philosophical Investigations, Kripke's misinterpretation thereof, and the realist/anti-realist controversy.
With its meticulous and thorough analyses, this book makes an outstanding contribution to legal philosophy, which I would highly recommend.
Book Description
Legal semiotics emphasizes the contingency and fluidity of legal concepts and stresses the existence of overlapping, competing and coexisting legal discourses. In response to new problems, changing power structures, changing societal norms and new faces of injustice established doctrines are reconsidered, reformulated and partly replaced by competing doctrines and hypotheses. Given the relative indeterminacy of law, it is no surprise that the problem of interpretation has always been one of the focal points of attention for legal semiotics. Who has the power to define words and concepts? Who can successfully assume the power to speak on behalf of the legal community? Which methods are used to justify the power to define?
This book discusses the questions mentioned above from three, related perspectives:
- Legal theory (Part I). This part discusses how more traditional approaches have dealt with the problem of legal interpretation and indeterminacy, questions the methods applied in traditional legal theory and offers new theoretical tools to understand the problem of legal interpretation.
- Judicial reasoning (Part II). The insights discussed in Part I are refined using legal semiotics, speech act theory and rhetorics and applied to the legal reasoning of courts and tribunals either in common law and civil law traditions.
- Application of law in politics and diplomatic practice (Part III). Traditionally, the study of legal reasoning has focussed on the application of law by courts and tribunals. However, legal reasoning also takes place outside the courtroom and takes up in the political and diplomatic arena. Who is included and excluded by particular conceptions of law? How does law deal with the phenomenon of interculturality?
"Combining theoretical inspiration with a keen interest in case law, this volume will appeal to scholars and students of legal theory, jurisprudence, legal anthropology, postcolonial studies, indeed to anyone who’s interested in problems of interpretation in legal and political theory and practice. It should also come in very handy in the classroom." Ronnie Lippens, Professor of Criminology, Keele University

Book Description
A concise up-to-date guide to all aspects of environmental pollution and cleanup.
Human invention and innovation have brought about tremendous improvements in the quality of life of millions of people around the world today-but progress has its price. Environmental pollution is rapidly attacking the Earth's ecosphere. While advances have been made and new disciplines have emerged to identify, monitor, regulate, and compensate for environmental pollutants, it will take the combined efforts of numerous specialists to solve the problem. It will also take the efforts of an informed public that, through its voting and buying habits, has the power to determine whether or not the threat to our environment can be contained.
This 2-volume encyclopedia provides all readers, regardless of scientific background or training, with a working knowledge of contemporary issues in environmental pollution and cleanup. Based on Wiley's critically acclaimed, 8-volume Encyclopedia of Environmental Analysis and Remediation, this compact A-to-Z reference features the same breadth and quality of coverage-and clarity of presentation-found in the original. It includes:
* Over 200 self-contained, thoroughly cross-referenced articles on essential aspects of environmental pollution and cleanup.
* Coverage of key topics in hazardous waste, air pollution control, biosphere pollution, health effects, nuclear waste, environmental law and regulation, water reclamation, and more.
* Integrated coverage of both legal and policy issues and technological and environmental concerns.
* Hundreds of photographs, figures, charts, and tables that help illustrate major points, explain difficult material, and summarize important data.
* Bibliographic entries keyed to the text that list sources of additional information on selected topics.
This book is an ideal reference for high school and college students and a convenient resource for scientists, environmental consultants, and anyone who needs clear, reliable, up-to-date information on environmental pollution and cleanup.
Customer Reviews:
Wiley Encyclopedia of Environmental Pollution and Cleanup.......2000-04-15
A well-organized 2-volume set with an impressive list of domestic and international contributors. The alphabetical arrangement and index help novices to this field find their way around in the encyclopedia. This condensed version focuses on describing and explaining environmental pollution and cleanup and leaves the more in-depth analysis to the 8-volume encyclopedia from which it is derived, published in the previous year. The articles are clearly written and well-illustrated.

Book Description
Half-metals are particular ferromagnetic materials which can be considered as hybrids between metals and semiconductors. A particular feature of these materials is that electrons at the Fermi level show complete spin polarization making them prime targets for research into suitable divices for spin electronics. This book is both an introduction and state-of-art survey of the latest advances in the understanding and applications of Heusler alloys and related compounds.

In Big Fish, Daniel Wallace angles in search of a father and hooks instead a fictional debut as winning as any this year. From his son's standpoint, Edward Bloom leaves much to be desired. He was never around when William was growing up; he eludes serious questions with a string of tall tales and jokes. This is subject matter as old as the hills, but Wallace's take is nothing if not original. Desperate to know his father before he dies, William recreates his father's life as the stuff of legend itself. In chapters titled "In Which He Speaks to Animals," "How He Tamed the Giant," "His Immortality," and the like, Edward Bloom walks miles through a blizzard, charms the socks off a giant, even runs so fast that "he could arrive in a place before setting out to get there." In between these heroic episodes, Bloom dies not once but four times, working subtle variations on a single scene in which he counters his son's questions with stories--some of which are actually very witty, indeed. After all, he admits, "...if I shared my doubts with you, about God and love and life and death, that's all you'd have: a bunch of doubts. But now, see, you've got all these great jokes." The structure is a clever conceit, and the end product is both funny and wise. At the heart of both legends and death scenes live the same age-old questions: Who are you? What matters to you? Was I a good father? Was I a good son? In mapping the territory where myth meets everyday life, Wallace plunges straight through to fatherhood's archaic and mysterious heart. --Mary Park
Book Description
In his prime, Edward Bloom was an extraordinary man. Or at least that's what he told his son. Faced with the prospect of his father's death, William Bloom sets about to discover who the man really is. Daniel Wallace's magical first novel, Big Fish, is told as a series of legends and myths inspired by the few facts that William knows. Through these tall tales-hilarious and wrenching, tender and outrageous-William begins to understand his elusive father's great feats and great failings.
Customer Reviews:
Big Fish still a Big Thrill.......2007-08-12
I recently reacquainted myself with Big Fish, Daniel Wallace's impressive tale of a strained father/son relationship, ultimately healed through storied memories on the occassion of the father's death bed. The story still impresses and seems fresh despite having read it before. It is simply magical.
Magical.......2007-04-12
I read this book before seeing the movie, and unlike other reviewers, I found that the movie did not live up to the book.
Sure the book is small, but the stories in it are so large and wonderful. I only wish there had been more to read.
For once, I like the movie more.......2006-10-04
I have to agree with the other reviewers who felt that this was the rare instance where the movie was better than the book. The story in the book just didn't seem to flow as well as the movie. This does not mean that this was a bad book. Perhaps I would have rated this book higher if I hadn't seen the movie first. It is still an excellent story.
Beautiful.......2006-07-12
William's father is dying, and William knows little about him beyond that simple fact. By looking back at all the tales his dad told him over the years, William hopes to learn who his father really is. As readers, we know nothing about Edward Bloom that his son doesn't know; thus, our perceptions of him, like William's, are based largely on surreal, fantastic tales. More than that, though, we get a hint of who William is and how he really feels about his dad.
This is the type of book I could read over and over again. The stories themselves are beautiful, and they are subtle and poignant in the context of the entire plot. Wallace maintains a perfect mystery around the characters that makes me want to comb over the novel sentence by sentence for a glimpse into their psyches. I don't know whether there actually is a deep life lesson to be taken from each and every story Edward told his son, but it feels like there was. So many parts of this book touched me. I came away feeling, for a few hours, like I had been transformed.
A book of UN-mythical proportions.......2006-07-06
This book made me laugh. This book made me cry. This book toyed with my emotions. I found it to be rather short, almost too short. While the book is almost always better than the movie, I honestly have to say I enjoyed the movie better. While this wasn't a horrible book, it could've been a lot longer.
Product Description
5 Hours 21 Minutes on 4 compact disks, complete and unabridged.
Writer and illustrator Daniel Wallace has published stories in various literary magazines. Big Fish is a novel reminiscent of Garrison Keillor and Mark Twain. It is a surprising work, filled with imagination, homespun humor, and hyperbole. Edward Bloom, an aging salesman, is dying. As his grown son, William, cares for him, the young man tries to focus on what he knows about his fathers life. Story after story surfaces in Williams memory, and he shares mythic visions of a fantastic father who was loved by alla man who was the best runner, fisherman, businessman, and adventurer in the world. Big Fish tells these tall tales of Edward Blooms life. Punctuated with his vast repertory of jokes, they set the stage for Edwards final, wonderful transformation. Each chapter achieves an added richness through Tom Stechschultes distinctive narration. An interview with Daniel Wallace is the perfect conclusion to this audio production
