Book Description
The only Windows XP Home book you need! This edition covers Service Pack 1 (SP-1), the first update to Windows XP since it was released in 10/01! Finally, the stability of Windows NT/2000 in an operating system built for the home and small business user--Windows XP has answered many prayers. Don't be fooled, though. Under those millions of lines of code, under the spit polished interface and under the hype lies an operating system that can be elegant one moment and confounding the next. This book will help you avoid making the leap from 9x to XP unprepared. Also included, more than 45 minutes from Brainsville.com! This unique video package brings Bob and Brian right to the desktop. They introduce the viewer to Windows XP and demonstrate how to use it, covering topics ranging from mastering the new XP user interface to how to set up and fine tune a local area network.

Great Intoduction to Concepts with Plenty of Detail.......2003-04-28
I sat down and read its 950+ pages from cover to cover. It is well written and organized and is successful in 2 ways. First, it offers an excellent overview and explanation of arcane and cryptic things like the Windows registry, disk partitioning, and Network Address Translation in a way that suffices perfectly for the educated but causal user who wants to know more about his computer. Secondly, it provides detailed descriptions of specific thing a user can do, from monitoring CPU usage to sharing files across networks to configuring the desktop. There are also numerous troubleshooting sections where you can learn what to do when things inevitably go wrong. I have been using Windows for 5 years and XP for 4 months, and only just decided to educate myself about all it can do. This book added tremendously to my knowledge, and I feel inspired to learn even more. Now I can diagnose problems more easily, plan new computer projects, and save money on software, since a lot of software that is available does things that Windows can do already. Highly recommended for anyone who is not already a power user.

Not for the experienced user.......2002-04-13
This book is probably good for a new or infrequent user, but for anyone who uses Windows heavily/frequently, this book just does not offer enough information. I wanted to find out the details of how user account management works, especially shared files and special directories like My Documents, My Pictures. While this book shows how to access these, it does not tell enough about how these features really work (or don't work - i.e. why My Documents is named "My Documents" for me, but "Laura's Documents" for my daughter Laura's account... and why I cannot rename these folders.
Or, how does XP pick the "Special" applications to run when you insert a audio CD or picture CD, or data CD, and why can't I add my own custom application to that list (i.e. Sonique instead of
Windows Media Player?)
The key to a good user interface (which I'll admit XP is getting there) is that it needs little or no documentation, and this book does not really add much that can't be inferred from the interfaces directlly or learned from the on-line help (which I'm glad to say is also improved in XP.)
I wish there was more depth on using/owning XP and less coverage of the obvious aspects of using Windows that anyone who uses Windows regularly knows.
Anything you want to know, and some you don't..........2002-02-07
I bought this book as a resource and an overview of XP Home Edition. I got much more than I bargained for. I read the entire book, cover to cover (skimming parts that didn't apply to me, of course); and over-all I found the book to be written in understandable language and in a tone that will appeal to many lay readers of computer literature. The authors have done an excellent job of relaying technical information in a way that is not stuffy and actually holds the reader's attention (most of the time). This is worth the money.
A complete and detailed book.......2002-01-23
This book covers just about everything you need to know when using XP Home Edition. The level of information contained surpassed my expectations. It covers topics ranging from the history and evolution of Windows to choosing a network and cabling system, to multi-booting with Linux.
For first-time users the new XP features are explained in detail. For experienced users, these new features are compared with features from previous operating systems, bringing a smooth transition to this powerful operating system. If you have not made the jump to XP yet, I assure you will be convinced to move after reading the first chapter of this book.
The book is not intended to be read from chapter 1 to the end in sequence. Basic XP interface usage is explained from Ch.4 through Ch.7, but then there's a whole bunch of additional Graphical User Interface (GUI) information covered in Ch. 21. I would have grouped all these chapters together before getting into more advanced topics, but I guess the authors had a purpose for that.
The Bob and Brian's Signature Tips are a plus in this book. Together with the Notes and Cautions the reader obtains valuable real-world information and is also encouraged to experiment with the software.
What I enjoyed most about this book was that the authors did not limit coverage to simply the XP OS, they also wrote about useful 3rd party utilities such as Tweak UI, Partition Magic and Virtual PC that provide additional functionality to the XP system.
This book is highly recommended for everyone new to Windows XP, and for experienced users of previous OS's that made or are planning to make the upgrade. Windows XP Home is an entirely different OS and you should have this book handy so you don't miss the many new features it provides.
5 stars and 100% recommended.

Few investments are as widely appealing as mutual funds. They permit individuals--including those with limited knowledge of financial markets, those planning relatively small commitments, and those seeking long-term fiscal stability--to join larger groups purchasing a variety of securities managed by experienced professionals. These investments, however, should never be made blindly, and this new edition of Warren Boroson's Keys To Investing in Mutual Funds explains everything necessary to understand all the benefits and risks.

May be dated, but a useful primer.......2003-02-20
This is an excellent book to get a good overview of what mutual funds are and why they are such a good investment vehicle for many people. Written in a lively, engaging style, it lays out in brief chapters essential concepts in easy-to-understand language. While it is now dated, it is still a great place to start.

Book Description
This book presents carefully edited and peer-reviewed papers from the 1
st International Workshop on Occultations for Probing Atmosphere and Climate (OPAC-1). It starts with a general introductory paper and proceeds to address the full range of topics, from methodology in general via specific occultation methods (GNSS-LEO, LEO-LEO, stellar and solar) to the use of occultation data. It is the first book to provide a "one-stop" insight into occultation science in such a comprehensive manner. Members of the occultation community and the science community alike, now have a key reference work, as this unique volume addresses all those interested in the present status as well as future developments in the field of occultations for probing atmosphere and climate.

Customer Reviews:
Not Recommended.......2007-04-08
The practice tests in this book were terrible! In more than one instance, the answers were incorrect according to my textbook and one of the questions had 3 answer choices that were identical! Compared to the AP questions we recieved from my teacher, the ones from the Barron's review book were quite off.
Great Book, as expected.......2006-03-16
bought this book on Amazon, saved a bunch of money, got the book in 3 days. i don't think it gets much better than that. as for the book itself, well, i always trusted barrons for most of my tests, and this is no exception.
It's OK.......2006-01-22
This book is ok. Some of the explanations (like with electricity) are a bit confusing, and some of the information in the book is not even tested on the AP exam (like angular momentum). There are a few errors in the answer choices too, and those threw me off. When I studied it, I had no experience with physics whatsoever, and I crammed for the AP Physics B exam in a month and got a 3. But nonetheless I did learn quite a bit, and the introductory chapters that dealt with testing and learning strategies were nice to read. I also found that, as opposed to the Princeton Review's book, theres more verbal explanation of the concepts, rather than a set of problems, making it seem more like a textbook than just a problem workbook.
So to a certain extent, the cons balance the pros, making it neither good or bad. I suppose this book is good depending on your learning style. If you want explanations, this book does it. If you more practice problems, princeton does that.
Customer Reviews:
horrible.......2003-07-30
I used this book along with Princeton Review to prepare for the test two months ago. The Princeton Review one is excellent, and this one is terrible. Though I can't say I got a 5 because of Princeton Review, this one is absolutely ridiculous. It has two chapters on problem solving, which are actually not very useful. The review chapters are extremely confusing, and a lot of the explanations, equations, and even basic concepts, are wrong. There are very few examples. The practice problems after each chapter are way harder than the real test, making them practically useless, and ridiculously many of the solutions are wrong too. Wrong concepts, explanations and solutions are all over the place. It also has a chapter on rotation and a whole 15-page chapter completely devoted to relativity, which aren't even on the B test except for torque, rotational statics, and the mass-energy relationship, which added up don't even need half a chapter. There are also appendices, some of which are totally useless for the AP test, like the infinite series for the sine function. This book is absolutely horrible, so don't get it.
Questions accurate of AP-style, but explanations are bad.......2000-12-03
First of all, the AP exam is majorly difficult so if you haven't put any effort in your class the test is going to be a nightmare.
The Barron's book is strong in it's practice exams. I found the questions to be of the same style and difficulty as on the AP, especially the multiple choice. And for some of the easier chapters (vectors, 1-D motion, waves), the summaries aren't too bad although the information is a little muddled.
But that's all that's really good about this book. The answers for the practice questions are to difficult to explain and a lot of the time just plain-out incorrect. They might explain how to do it mathematically and show the calculations which would be completely incorrect. Or they'd write the incorrect equations. If you're a strong Physics student most of this shouldn't bother you, but there were a few questions where the method they used to solve the problem was entirely incorrect. Also when the book tries to explain the more complicated stuff, the language is just no basic and clear. And they introduce a lot of simplified versions of the common equations, obviously meant to increase speed, but mostly just confused me.
This was the only book I used to prepare for the exam so I don't know how the other prep guides are in comparison. But I wouldn't recommend this book.
Excellent review of the Physics B curriculum........2000-05-25
I find it interesting that the reviewer before me -- who gave the book one star -- wrote the review on 15 May 2000, when the AP exam was not until two days later.
Having used this book almost as my primary source for most of the fourth quarter, I have to say it does an excellent job of what it says it will -- helping a student prepare for the AP Physics B exam. From problem-solving strategies to excellent short summaries of each topic to sample exams to even a review of algebra, the book provides everything needed to succeed on the Physics B exam.
With a teacher who was out with a serious illness for most of the fourth quarter, I knew I'd need extra help if I was going to get through the AP exam. (It's one of six I took, so it's not like I haven't experienced the "fun" of these exams before). I picked up this book and found myself quite happy with it, and its review of dozens of test topics definitely helped me through both my physics class and the AP exam itself. In retrospect, I wouldn't have done as well as I did without this review guide.
Don't buy this book!.......2000-05-16
The biggest complaint that I have with this book is that the answers explained are horrible. They are either useless or only confuse you more. I would highly recommend you to buy the REA(Research & Education Association) Review Book if you can find it. The REA Review book had an answers explained section that is quite helpful, not only telling you why an answer is right, but why each wrong answer is wrong. I have also found the test questions to be much more difficult and confusing in this book than any review book I got and from the actual exam that I just took. I also found many blatant errors in this review book. For example numbers 44 and 60 on exam I have typos in their answer choices. The back of the book is different from the answer choice. There are many others that I found and probably many more that I did not find. I am rather sorry that I wasted my money on this book and urge you not to do so as well.
Great Summaries!.......2000-01-10
Wolf provides me not only all I need on the test material with clear and comprehensive, but also some valuable knowledge associated with it. This book is seven times as light as my text book, but the former is perhaps more valuable.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Learning Tool.......2007-06-02
This book is a bit of a contradiction, insofar as it is very entertaining reading, yet you learn a great deal almost by accident. I also intuitively feel I'd like the author; whether as an instructor or just a nice guy to share a cold beer with. If you are interested in how to make humor "click," this is the place to look. Highly recommended.
Who, me?!.......2005-08-23
So someone once asked me, "Pamela, do you write comedy?". "Not on purpose", I replied.
But now, with the help of a really funny guy who wrote a really helpful book, I can make a good go at it.
Like Brad Schreiber himself, this book is intelligent, witty, accessible, inspiring, and fun.
It offers overviews of various forms of humor, theories of humor, examples of humor, excerpts from humorists, practical advice on writing funny, and even provocative exercises that guarantee at least a giggle, most often a guffaw.
As a story consultant myself, I recommend Brad's book to my writing clients.
As a reader, I recommend Brad's book to anyone -- writer, speaker, performer -- who wants to lighten their life and the presentation of their message with humor.
Over 70 excerpts from top screenwriters .......2005-02-10
Produce winning comedic screenplays using fiction and nonfiction alike with Brad Schreiber's What Are You Laughing At?: How To Write Funny Screenplays, Stories, & More. Included are over 70 excerpts from top screenwriters and pairing them with writing exercises and details on the differences between writing comedy for TV versus stage. There are eleven modes of comedic dialogue, 13 common problems screenwriters encounter and valuable insights into the rhythm and sound of words in What Are You Laughing At? Brad is himself a L.A. screenwriter, so his tips come from an insider's hand.
an example of what it teaches.......2004-06-11
This book is funny -- even if you don't feel like learning anything from it, you'll laugh. Writers will recognize themselves in the examples for sure. I like that the book is about *writing funny* as opposed to writing screenplays or columns or novels or [insert genre here]. Schreiber breaks down the principles of humor writing and gives you guidance on applying them to any type of project.
Brad Schreiber: WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT?.......2004-04-09
This is a wry, dry, witty and comprehensive piece of work which is excellent reading in itself as well as being essential for the aspiring writer. Schreiber draws on his experience as TV development executive, teacher, script consultant and actor to hand on a wealth of useful information on everything from Aphorisms to Yiddish Sound Theory and from the Author's Voice to Vulgarity - and for the really keen student there are 'Do This Now' exercises at the end of every section. This is a high quality publication by Michael Wise Productions. It has a useful index and an excellent introduction by Christopher Vogler. I enoyed it hugely.
