I'm working my way through this and it's doing a good job of giving me a good overall background. So far, I like it.

1 out of 5 stars Needs to calculator.......2002-09-14

When it came to explaining things, I liked the book. I though it did a very good job of making complicated concepts very basic and easy to understand.

Unfortunate, what I gained in clarity in the author's analogies was lost when he started to give actual examples with numbers in them.

For example, page 161 where he is giving an example on sub net masks. The example starts by stating "10001001101 is the binary representation of 1,102 = 11 bits are needed in the subnet mask." That is not correct 1,102 = 10001001110. So does that mean since the last bit is zero that only 10 bits are needed? - or do we still need 11 bits? - examples should help clarify the point, not add to the confusion.

Another example is on page 97. It gives a formula to figure out the number of available networks in a network class - and using this formula it would mean a Class A network would have 2^7 networks (8 bits minus 1 because the first bit is zero to designate it a Class A) which equals 128. But his summary chart on that same page says 126 - and just a few pages before (page 93) he walks you through an detailed example of how many networks are in a class A, but he gives you an answer of 127. So what is right? 126, 127 or 128?

Are you confused, because by the time I was done reading just two chapters I was. Unfortunately, the book is riddled with these inconsistencies. If you are new to TCP IP, have a need to understand network addressing and are only going to get one book, this is not the one.

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic, and in many places just plain incorrect........2002-04-21

Clearly there is a market for a book like this--it's just too bad this one is so bad. The writing is good, but the things Mr. Blank writes are so frequently incorrect or oversimplified to the point of meaninglessness.

Here are some major issues:

- Oversimplification. I suppose that's OK, particularly if this text is aimed at elementary or middle school students, who can't deal as well with the details. In the Introduction, we're told that, among others, "decision-makers", network administrators, small business owners, and TCP/IP instructors, are the intended audience.

- Major misconceptions. For example, UDP and TCP are the two most important transport layer protocols but not the only ones (SCTP, as well as, arguably, TLS and others). Classful IP addresses have been deprecated for years. And so on.

- More specific errors of fact. Things like saying that a host is "any device... on a network..." with an IP address--that's wrong. Ditto for claiming the the sender/builder of a packet has to know the destination's hardware address (highlighted as a "Tip") or that TCP data is chunked into "packets" or that the Internet layer "contains" ARP. And on and on and on.

- Condescending layout. Yes, the layout is condescending, with the special symbols placed above every page number to indicate whether or not the current "topic" continues on the next page; the "NOTE"'s spread throughout, letting the reader know what's coming up in the next paragraph; simple-minded end of chapter review questions; and so on.

- Minimal content. Two full pages at the start of every chapter for the number, title, and list of chapter topics. Lots and lots of white space within the text, plus huge header fonts, plus two full pages (at least) for review questions at the end of every chapter, plus way too many screenshots of Windows dialog boxes.

If you must buy this book, realize that you won't know as much about TCP/IP as you think you do, and be prepared to be corrected if you go on with your networking education.

5 out of 5 stars start learning about tcp/ip here.......2002-04-04

if you have very little knowledge or totally clueless about tcp/ip and would like to start learning about it -- this is where you should start. it really covers the basics. the author was able to explain every subject in an easy-to-understand-and-digest manner. (i admit there were trivial "real-life" examples, but what the hey?! it's still a 5-star book to me.) thank GOD we bought it!

For anyone needing basic information on TCP/IP, addressing and subnetting this book is it. The author places the information in clear language and uses simple, daily examples to explain. Grab it!

        Book Description

Frank Schimmelfennig analyzes the Eastern enlargement of the European Union and NATO and develops a theoretical approach of "rhetorical action" to explain why it occurred. Backed by original data, and drawing on sociological institutional theory, he demonstrates that the expansion to the East can be best understood in terms of liberal democratic values and norms. He highlights the practice of the Western community in shaming opponents into agreeing to enlargement.

        Download Description

Why did Western European states agree to the enlargement of the EU and NATO? Frank Schimmelfennig analyzes the history of the enlargement process and develops a theoretical approach of 'rhetorical action' to explain why it occurred. While rationalist theory explains the willingness of East European states to join the NATO and EU, it does not explain why member states decided to admit them. Using original data, Schimmelfennig shows that expansion to the East can be understood in terms of liberal democratic community building. Drawing on the works of Jon Elster and Erving Goffman, he demonstrates that the decision to expand was the result of rhetorical action. Candidates and their supporters used arguments based on collective identity, norms and values of the Western community to shame opponents into acquiescing to enlargement. This landmark book makes an enormous contribution to theory in international relations and to the study of European politics.

                Book Description

For a meaningful understanding of physics, it is necessary to realise that this corpus of knowledge operates in a register different from natural thought. This book aims at situating the main trends of common reasoning in physics with respect to some essential aspects of accepted theory. It analyses a great many research results based on studies of pupils and students at various academic levels, involving a range of physical situations. It shows the impressive generality of the trends of common thought, as well as their resistance to teaching. The book's main focus is to underline to what extent natural thought is organised. As a result of this mapping out of trends of reasoning, some suggestions for teaching are presented; these have already influenced recent curricula in France. This book is intended for teachers and teacher trainers principally, but students can also benefit from it to improve their understanding of physics and of their own ways of reasoning.

Checked this one out thinking Olivia sounded a bit like Janet Evanovich's delightful lingerie buyer turned bounty-hunter, Stephanie Plum (One for the Money (A Stephanie Plum Novel)). Alas, this book was a disappointment from chapter 1 on. A passable Ian Fleming-style conspiracy plot provides the background to a literary train wreck, a calamity littered with shallow characters, hollow stereotypes, and stale dialog. My chief complaints? 1) Nearly every Muslim character is either a terrorist or a dirty, shady salesman. 2) The chief love interest is a condescending muscle-bound American CIA agent who likes to call his female colleagues "baby." Swoon! 3) Covert agents investigating Al-Qaeda can safely pass as either reporters or academics. Beg Pardon? 4) Ms. Joules' first impulse upon seeing any man appears to generally involve sizing him up as "man material." I could go on, but you get the idea. If you're looking for more sexism, racism, and crotch-related humor in your chick lit, this is the book for you. Otherwise, stay far, far, away.

Boy, I read this book last year and had a terrible time putting it down. Helen Fielding's writing style draws you, keeps you interested, and captivates your mind while also tickling your funny bone. British humor is one of my favorites...no wonder I love the Bridget Jones's Diary series so much!!

                5 out of 5 stars Very Clever.......2007-03-10

Different and better than Bridget Jones! This book is for the adventurous side of women; whereas Bridget Jones is more for the self-depricating man-obsessed side of us. Light and fun read! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than Bridget Jones.......2007-01-10

I could read more Olivia Joules! She is Bridget Jones with an attitude. Most enjoyable reading.

4 out of 5 stars Olivia kicks ass.......2007-01-09

Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination is one of the rare books that is insane enough to be unbelievable but realistic enough to keep you flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. This is another one of Helen Fielding's sensational delights that allows women to realize that they are the main focus in their own lives despite the poisoning, maddening man issues and terrorism that is so apparent. It's a really quick read, great for travel or vacation and is a conversation piece that is remarkable to pass along to the girls. Happy Reading.

Although more than a bit predictable in spots, Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination has the charm of Bridget Jones, but without the angst and self-loathing. Joules' clumsy attempts at super-sleuthing are almost always successful--not necessarily because of ingenuity or intellect, but because of odd deus-ex-machinas which seem to follow Joules everywhere she goes. She has the guts of James Bond without the misogynist bent. This book holds interest for those who are captivated by fashion, beauty, espionage, wealth, paparazzi, Iraqi insurgents, and Osama Bin Laden. Think these things don't fit together at all? Fielding makes it work in this book.

                Book Description

At the close of the last millennium, Helen Fielding debuted the irrepressible (and blockbuster-bestselling) Bridget Jones. Now, Fielding gives us a sensational new heroine for a new era . . . Move over 007, a stunning, sexy-and decidedly female-new player has entered the world of international espionage. Her name is Olivia Joules (that's “J.O.U.L.E.S. the unit of kinetic energy”) and she's ready to take America by storm with charm, style, and her infamous Overactive Imagination.

How could a girl not be drawn to the alluring, powerful Pierre Ferramo-he of the hooded eyes, impeccable taste, unimaginable wealth, exotic international homes, and dubious French accent? Could Ferramo really be a major terrorist bent on the Western world's destruction, hiding behind a smokescreen of fine wines, yachts, and actresses slash models? Or is it all just a product of Olivia Joules's overactive imagination?

Join Olivia in her heart-stopping, hilarious, nerve-frazzling quest from hip hotel to eco-lodge to underwater cave, by light aircraft, speedboat, helicopter, and horse, in this witty, contemporary, and utterly unputdownable novel deluxe.

5 out of 5 stars Not as bad as they said ..........2006-07-08

I beg to differ from those 1-star ratings and bad reviews of some Amazon readers! Granted, this book does not have the depth and research of reality as, say, a Dan Brown novel but, overall, it is an entertaining and exciting book. Although a little plodding at first, the beginning of the book also leaves much to the reader's imagination -- after each scene, you are left wondering whether what the heroine is experiencing is merely a figment of her own imagination or whether it is actually happening. From the middle to the end of the book, it was just hard to put down. Sure, some scenes weren't original (stolen from movies) but there were also many cliff hangers. Taken as a whole, the story is substantial and holds quite a few surprises.

The heroine is not another ditzy Bridget Jones because she is smart and independent. I started this book as a big fan of Bridget Jones but now I am just a big fan of Helen Fielding!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money.......2006-07-07

Easily one of the most boring books I have ever read. I read the first 150 pages hoping it would get better, but just could not go on after that. The story makes no sense at all. Definitely not worth anyone's time or money.

5 out of 5 stars Warning: Anyone who takes this book too seriously will miss out on the fun!.......2006-07-06

I picked up this book while taking a break from another and immediately realized what the other was lacking: sparkle. The indescribable sparkly zing that makes a book special.

After just a few pages I found that besides style, the book also had a thrilling and clever Nancy Drew meets James Bond vibe that I can't get enough of; as soon as I finished I started it over again! It was even better the second time.

Olivia Joules is my new hero, hope she won't mind if I borrow her Rules for Living.

5 out of 5 stars Great airplane read.......2006-05-02

I read this while on a business trip and had trouble putting it down. I also embarrassed myself with laughter while on the plane and sitting in airports. It is a nice breezy read which is very enteraining.

                1 out of 5 stars Underactive Imagination.......2005-12-17

Sometimes we want to see a movie because of the bad reviews it's gotten - we want to confirm that it really is that bad. That was the case with my reading Olivia Joules and yes, it really is that bad. Lots of the reviews on this forum have detailed the bad plotting and characterisation and the bad taste of the subject matter. Others have said that had she not had considerable success with BJ this would never have been published. I can only agree with everyone who gave it a 1-star rating. This is possibly the worst book I've ever read. It's hard to believe Fielding has such disdain for readers or that the publishers would cash-in on her previous work. Buy this second-hand if you must but don't let them benefit any more frlom this trash.

I actually disagree with the other reviewer. I'm almost finished with the audiobook and I didn't think it was set almost entirely in the USA. Olivia does visit the USA but then goes to Honduras and the Sudan.

I also did not have a problem with the narrator's American accents.
In fact, I loved the narrator's voice and thought she did a wonderful job.

This is a really fun book, filled with humor and excitement. I have recommended it to all of my friends.

This is a really fun, engaging book and I enjoyed the story a lot. In my opinion, Helen Fielding lives up to her terrific reputation with this one. What I absolutely do not like is the reader's American accents. She has a beautiful voice and does a stellar job with the narrative text and British accents, but her American accents are stilted and unrealistic. It's as if she's forcing them so much that they lack the fluidity of natural language. It makes the characters suffer because they all sound nasal and artificial. Dreadful, really. Since the story is set almost entirely in America, this is a big, big problem.
