Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2007-08-29

I've first checked this book out from the Chicago Public Library three times and once kept it two months after the book check out expired. The I purchased the book myself. I can not offer enough praise for this well researched and written book on the Internet. This is definitely the "Book" for pros and "dummies" alike.

I have been working in technology for eighteen years with the U.S. Navy and using the Internet for nine years now and admittedly I only possessed about less 10% of the available resources that was presented in this book. Just visiting and bookmarking all those interesting link to various useful Web sites was good enough for me (100+ useful bookmarks from this book alone).

My college textbooks and other "big computer books" weren't as valuable as this one. With this new gained knowledge, I've referred this book to my instructor for the "Basic Internet Class" that I took at the one of the City Colleges of Chicago (Truman College) and my fellow classmates agreed that this book "The Internet GigaBook For Dummies" and "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies", also by Peter Weverka, was more informative than our classroom resources and textbook. Buy this book if you want to REALLY learn something about this subject.

One final thought, read Mr. Peter Weverka's "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies". You won't be disappointed in my recommendation on this wonderful read. Peace out and take care.

Technologies for soil remediation require real knowledge and understanding of the processes involved and a correct and complete numerical approach in order to reach the best results at the lowest possible cost. The authors focus on the improvement of the scientific base for the development of integrated indicators of the environmental risks created by the presence of pollutants in water and porous media. They deliver insights into the understanding of integrated process, and also modeling capabilities. The establishment of a set of integrated indicators to evaluate the pollution status and risk of water resources will considerably aid environmental agencies, administrators and regulators and profit the society as a whole.

            Book Description

Insect Learning is a comprehensive review of a new field. Until recently, insects were viewed as rigidly programmed automatons; now, however, it is recognized that they can learn and that their behavior is plastic. This fundamental change in viewpoint is causing a re-examination of all aspects of the relationship between insects and their environment. This change in perspective is occurring at a time of heightened interest in brain function in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Insects potentially play a major role in this expanding area. Because of their experimental tractability and genetic diversity, they provide unique opportunities for testing hypotheses on the ecology and evolution of learning. As organisms of economic importance, they are perennial objects of research by both basic and applied scientists. Insect Learning covers both social and non-social insects from multiple perspectives. The book covers mechanisms; syntheses of work on physiology, behavior, and ecology; and micro- and macroevolution. The concluding section discusses future directions for research, including applications to pest management.

                Book Description

This overview of the world's mineral deposits lists the metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits according to continents, subdividing the latter with respect to regional metallogenic zones. The introductory chapters summarize present knowledge of the basic concepts of the geologic structure and the evolution of the continents and oceans. The description of the essential metallogenic units has been complemented by main aspects of the development of global metallogeny in time and space. The characteristics of the world's mineral wealth have been supplemented with basic data on the amount, extent and manner of using these mineral resources. Economic geologists will find this volume of interest.

From the supplier: The high value of gold results in its being mined under great hardship, despite its dangerous influence on the environment and human health. The desire for gold has been matched by an increased production of gold. Gold is predominantly used in jewelry, and as a status symbol. The production of gold through mining destroys mountains and the ecosystem. Gold can also be produced by adding sodium cyanide to crushed ores, but this results in environmental pollution. The desire for gold must be subdued to reduce the production of gold, and thereby protect the environment.

From the supplier: The Bushveld Complex is world famous not only for its economic deposits but also for its base-metal and other more exotic deposits and its microminerals. Four species of highly attractive microminerals that are rare from South Africa were collected from the abandoned Stavoren deposit within the complex include carminite, beudanite, scorodite and olivenite. Munirite has been discovered as a slag mineral from a large processing plant in the periphery of the Bushveld complex.

                                    Book Description

Laser-Beam Interactions with Materials treats, from a physicist's point of view, the wide variety of processes that lasers can induce in materials. Physical phenomena ranging from optics to shock waves are discussed, as are applications in such diverse fields as semiconductor annealing, hole drilling and fusion plasma production. The approach taken emphasizes the fundamental ideas and their interrelations. The newcomer is given the necessary important background material, while the active research worker finds a critical and comprehensive review of the field.

                                    Book Description

The year is 1985. Brian Jackson, a working-class kid on full scholarship, has started his ?rst term at university. The usual freshman anxiety over ?tting in is compounded by the gap between his own humble origins and the privileged backgrounds of his better-off classmates.

Brian also has a dark secret—a long-held, burning ambition (stoked by his late father) to appear on the wildly popular TV quiz show University Challenge—and now, ?nally, it seems the dream is about to become reality. He’s made the school team, and they’ve completed the qualifying rounds and are limbering up for their ?rst televised match. (And, what’s more, he’s fallen head over heels for one of his teammates, the beautiful, brainy, and intimidatingly posh Alice Harbinson.) Life seems perfect and triumph inevitable—but as his world opens up, Brian learns that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

Reminiscent of such classic coming-of-age works as The Graduate and Goodbye, Columbus, A Question of Attraction marks the literary debut of David Nicholls, one of England’s most highly praised television writers. It is an unforgettable story of love, class, ?nding one’s place in the world, and the all-important difference between knowledge and wisdom.

"I feel for A Question of Attraction as I do the pick 'n' mix counter at Woolworth's: nostalgic, giddy, happy, sick, and then devastated when there is none left. I could not put this book down. I love it. Literally."

I can't say that about many of the books that are out there nowadays. This little novel is truly entertaining, smart and engaging and more should know about it. The hilarity of our protag., Brian and his forays into college life in the U.K. is so much better than the lame attempts about the 'Halls of Ivy' that pour into the lit scene year after year. Especially, the ones that take place here in the U.S. (How's about PREP? Or Tom Wolfe's CHARLOTTE SIMMONS?) I say, pass on those and pick this one up.

Rather than the hi-tech world of today, our story takes place back in the 'Big hair', happenin' '80's. The section where we have our hero sporting a 'Flock of Seagulls' haircut is only one of the hilarious scenes we get in this very entertaining book.

For shame more don't know about it. And I only heard aboout it via references in other book reviews I've come across here at Amazon. You'll laugh. You really will.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2007-04-16

This book was great. I can't remember who recommended it to me, but I wish I did so I could thank them. David Nicholls is a great author, love the dry, self-deprecating British humor. I found myself laughing out loud during several parts of the book. He is a great story teller and the book has a very satisfying ending. (This book is better than The Understudy, but that is worth a read also).

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Read the book; go see then movie!.......2007-02-09

I agree with the esteemed reviewer below. I know the publisher had to rename it because a very small handful of yanks would be familiar with University Challenge terminology, and that's mainly due to the fact that they probably because it was featured in a 'Young Ones' episode... bloody great episode by the way. Either way, it's a great read. Couldn't help but compare it to the Rachel Papers, sans the computer with the back-log of romantic conquests, and also not as sexually cunning as Highway, whereas Jackson more... awkwardly stumbles, really. I also found myself laughing a lot. Out loud. Bostin!

                                    3 out of 5 stars Good For a Laugh.......2006-10-02

AQOA is a light look at a lower middle-class 18-year-old as he goes to his freshman year at university. He has experiences with which many of us can relate, and Nicholls writes confidently about the uncomfortable, quirky situations most of us encounter during that time.

Our hero, Brian Jackson, seems a little too smart for the drunk he's make out to be. That rankles just a little bit, as do graphic descriptions of acne vulgaris. Lastly, I just can't believe someone as bookwise as Brian could make so many serious social blunders, such as inappropriate joking with Alice's (his tender goddess) mother. These are small subtractions from an otherwise pleasing whole--Brian seems to gain independence, a modicum of insight into women and relationships, and a more realistic outlook on life and its opportunities during his rocky but rewarding first year away from home. This is a fast, pleasant (if sometimes grotesque) read that takes us all back to that uncomfortable transition to adulthood.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2006-08-01

This book is an absolute hoot. We are talking belly-laughing-out-loud, wetting-your-pants hilarious.

But the book is not just funny. It is also a very sharp, very observant piece of social satire. The story is intelligent and moving, and (if you have ever had the misfortune to be a young man) SO TRUE! For once, I read a work of fiction in which the characters and dialogue actually mimic real life. It is full of those moments where you say to yourself: yes, yes, that's EXACTLY what it's like!

In amidst the side-splitting humour there are serious, thought-provoking themes which everyone can relate to: the nature of love and friendship, the pains of growing-up, and the elusive pursuit of happiness. Yet the writing is wonderfully down-to-earth and unpretentious. As long as you like a good laugh, and know what it's like to be human, then you will certainly love this hilarious book.
