1 out of 5 stars I dont recommend this book.......2004-07-01

I was wondering if any professional likes to work on microcontroller with BASIC Language and with so many external RAMs and ROMs ( run time BASIC interpreter .. .. i cant think of it !!! ) and let the microcontroller interpret lines one by one in the real time. I work on 8051 family microcontroller and obviously for the real time effciency reason, I use C and Assembly, I bought this book reading reviews and my poor observation did not catch that it was on 8052-BASIC. So I was shocked when it reached me. But yes, If you really wanna do some experiment on BASIC language with microcontroller, then this is the book you are looking for, no doubt, but If you wanna start your experience with microcontroller, I would suggest the book "Microcontroller Projects in C for the 8051" by Dogan Ibrahim. I think as an electrical engineer, professionals should always pick C and Assembly language for real time demand and this is the best book for beginners to start on C that I have found by researching the book market for a long time up to now.

5 out of 5 stars A very good sourse for projects on embedded applications.......2003-03-26

Embedded applications are increasing by the day. Many new areas are being explored. This book really makes things easier and it encourages to undertake good projects which could later be very useful in everyday applications. Full of ideas and suggestions. Although the microcontroller 8051/8052 is considered as outdated, this book is a good start. Once the basic techniques for the same are grasped switching over to other newer controller chips will be a cakewalk.
This book (along with other similar titles by author) bridges the gap betwwen academic persuit and real life applications. For every idea discussed, an innovative student can think of say 3 more new ideas. This is not just a book that gives a few projects, which you do and that's the end of the story. It allows you to evolve new ideas and enough grounding is provided such that you can implement the same with confidence and 100% success rate.

-For students in this field this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner.......2002-12-04

Jan Axelson is known for her clarity of writing and for her ability to make sophisticated technology "user friendly". This book is another winner in a line of excellent technical books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for an introduction to Microcontrollers.......2002-03-13

Although the 8052 processor is very outdated, it still can be used to control many things in this ever-so-hi-tech-world. The 8052 proves to be a very affordable microcontroller, rather than buying a full blown computer or PC104-based computer. This book is very introductory, but it does assume you know basic electronics. The 8052 is no where near as complex as an FPGA, but the programming rituals can prepare you before you learn the basics of programming the FPGA(theory and your thinking of logic). The experience gained by playing around with the 8052 sure gave me the important thinking processes needed for other design projects at work.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best book based on the 8052-BASIC chip.......2001-10-23

This is the best book based on the 8052-BASIC chip, and is a must have for anyone (hobbyist or professional) who is the planning on work with the 8051 or another microcontroller. Believe me this book is the good first step.

Would you take a stock tip from a guy named Tokyo Joe? How about one from Big Dog? If so, you should read this book. If not, you will probably find Scam Dogs and Mo-Mo Mamas an entertaining curiosity about the type of person you're glad you're not. Tokyo Joe and Big Dog are two of the main characters in Scam Dogs. They post messages on Internet stock discussion boards, touting stocks most of us have never heard of. When these guys say "Buy," thousands of people do. The problem for those thousands is the gurus may have done all their own buying before recommending a stock to others and start selling as soon as their followers start buying. At least that's what the Securities and Exchange Commission accused Tokyo Joe of doing when it filed a civil complaint against him in January 2000. (This practice, according to the helpful glossary at the back of the book, is called scalping.) Emshwiller is a reporter for The Wall Street Journal who has covered numerous frauds and swindles--in fact the book started as a Journal article about the colorful Tokyo Joe (How colorful? He usually trades naked in his Manhattan apartment, sitting in the lotus position while staring at multiple computer screens.) Scam Dogs will be most useful to those contemplating a career in day trading. However, when you see how many ways there are to get fleeced, you may decide it's a more remunerative not to become a sheep. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

Meet the new leaders of the twenty-first-century stock market-each an Internet stock-trading legend. Each a cyber-guru in the vanguard of the millions of people trading and talking about stocks on the Internet. Each with legions of eager followers and determined foes, and the ability to make stock prices leap-or plummet-at the click of a mouse. Colorful, charismatic, and often outrageous, they are reshaping the way we invest and how Wall Street works.

Scam Dogs and Mo-Mo Mamas is their story the first journalistic look at these market wizards and their brave new world. Veteran Wall Street Journal reporter John Emshwiller has entered that world and brought back a lively, entertaining tale, documenting their rise, the culture they've created, their intertwined lives, and their power, influence, and turf battles.

Pitted against the cyber-gurus, and a major part of this story, are the self-appointed truthsayers who seek to expose their excesses, Web officials who try to keep order in cyberspace, and enforcement officials from the SEC, who are beginning a government crackdown.

Though these Internet voyagers rarely meet or even share a spoken word, their lives and passions have all met in cyberspace. There, they befriend or battle each other in pursuit of fame and fortune. They operate in a realm without substance that can be powerfully, even frighteningly, real. There, it is as easy to be entertained as it is to be fleeced. Of course, if you are very good and very lucky, you just might strike it rich.

Welcome to the wild and woolly world of Internet stock trading-where the rules are still being written, nothing is as it seems, and everything is up for grabs.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Start Says It All........2001-06-14

John Emshwiller's book Scam Dogs and Mo Mo Mamas is fine effort to introduce the reader to the little known world of internet pumping and dumping, and insider stock manipulation using cyber space as a tool to get it done. But with this book that's as far as it goes. Mr. Emshwiller missed a key part of the story when it comes to the myth that has been built around alleged cyber snoop, and consumer advocate Janice Shell. Mr. Emshwiller never does seem to get the story right about the "Two Ricks," and who Janice Shell and Rick Marchese really are. He seems to take Ms. Shell's word for who she really is, and does little or no real research into the allegations Ms. Shell is really Janice Evans living in Milan, Italy under the alias of Janice Shell without the knowledge of the Italian Government. There is much more to be found on the subject of Janice Shell and her friends, and the reader is encouraged to use this book as only starting point.

Myself, I got little out of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Stock Hypers, Shorts, Investigators and Shady Dealings!.......2000-09-04

John Emshwiller is an investigative reporter for The Wall Street Journal who specializes in writing about fraud. In this book, he focuses on some of the most famous characters who are known on the Internet bulletin boards of the Web site, Silicon Investor. These include Tokyo Joe (hyper), Big Dog (hyper), Anthony@Pacific (short), GA Bard (hyper), Janice Shell (amateur investigator), Jeffrey S. Mitchell (amateur investigator and no relation to me that I know of), SI Jill (bulletin board cop), and Pluvia (short). If you have always wanted to know more about these people because you read their postings, this book will tell you details that will intrigue you. As you can imagine, few people are what they seem on the Internet. Almost everyone in this account has something to hide, but as their fame grows access to the dirty details does too. As the book was being finished, the SEC filed suit against Tokyo Joe in what will probably be just the beginning of many such suits to stop scalping and failing to disclose payments from companies to hype stocks.

These individuals started as people who wanted to have some fun, run a few stocks to make some money, and gain a little fame. The rapid growth of Internet investing has turned them into influential commentators who can make enormous sums offering their services and investing. This is their story, as shared with and uncovered by Mr. Emshwiller.

If you already follow some of these people, you already know what a Scam Dog and a Mo-Mo Mama are. Since this is a book about Internet bulletin boards, I will assume that you may not know. The definition of a Scam Dog in the book is "a stock that combines the qualities of a 'scam' and a 'dog,' being at worst a fraud and at best overvalued and headed for a fall." You will meet a lot of them in this book. A Mo-Mo Mama is "a stock that is quickly rising due to excitement among traders, sometimes triggered by news, Internet chatter, disinformation, and sometimes by the need to be excited about something."

There is always a four-way battle going on with these investor bulletin boards. The hypers are trying to get people to buy (usually after buying themselves), the shorts are trying to get people to sell (usually after selling themselves), the amateur investigators are trying to debunk one side or the other, and the company is trying to either hype itself or correct misimpressions. One of the strengths of this book is that it contains a lot of e-mails that were posted. These are crude (in many senses of that word) signs of the battle. These Internet celebrities get death threats, hate mail, and insults by the ton. Why do they start doing it? "For one thing, the Internet offers anybody who wants it -- be he burrito maker, bard, or boob -- a shot at something at least as addictive as making money: the chance to be somebody in the eyes of somebody else." That seems to be the bottom line of this ego-driven book. People apparently cheat in describing themselves, their investment results, and how they behave relative to investors. The combined temptations of money and fame easily overcome them. In many cases, these are people who would not stand up to too much scrutiny in public, as this book reveals.

"Be very careful!" over the Internet is the simple lesson of this book. The person you are dealing with is likely to be out to pick your pocket.

If you enjoy long strings of insults, you'll find lots of funny reading here. If you don't, then skip those sections and go on with the story.

Then after you read this entertaining guide to what not to do, ask yourself where else you need to be careful on the Internet.

Good luck!

This is a very good book that has chapters from the foremost scientists in wheat research and improvment through genetic engineering. Wheat is one of the most impirtant crops in the world today and thanks to plant breeders the demand as still not outstripped production worldwide. However, with most of the human population increases coming in the developing countries in the next 50 years, this crop will face considerable production demands. Conventional plant breeding has reached a plateau in increasing yields. Quantum leap in this direction can come from genetic engineering and genetically modified varieties of this crop. The chapters in this book show how this can and will be done. This book is a mustread for all all students and researchers working on wheat improvment and conservation of its genetic resources.

                Book Description

This unique book written by Russian and Norwegian scientists is an analysis of studies based on extensive data analysis and numerical modelling simulations of the White Sea and provides a quantitative assessment of vulnerability of the White Sea marine ecosystems of future anthropogenic and, to some extent, climate change forcing. The authors address a wide range of issues, including geographical position and the paleogeological background of the White Sea Basin. They provide the most recent data on the White Sea bathymetry, examine the White Sea ecosystem profile, and provide extensive historical marine and riverine data records. An integrated assessment of the state of the ecology, vulnerability and sustainability of the White Sea is presented. They look specifically at the applications of satellite Earth observation (remote sensing) oceanographic investigations into changes in regional physical oceanography and ecology, provide extensive coverage of the problems of multi-faceted data assimilation in ocean modelling and conclude with a look at the present state of the art and future developments in this area of nature conservation.

I personally thought that this book was very useful, especailly with homework which was assigned out of a different text for Physics 101 course. The answer manual was helpful when working problems, but the in-text examples were what really helped. Nolan's text examines problems with metric and standard units as opposed to just using one set of units throughout the entire book. Overall the book was helpful in getting me through most of my assigned homework.

4 out of 5 stars Not really the best but IT IS A GOOD BOOK.......2000-12-25

It is a decent book and is bascially meant to brush up your fundamentals. In that way it does fulfill it's function. The exercises are there so that you can practise your theoritical knowledge and that happens when you do not have access to solutions easily.Otherwise one tends to reach out for the solution manual at every stage. I would recommend it if you want to use it as a book to have most of the fundamentals explained in 1 book so that you can look it up anytime you want.

Steve Martin's first foray into fiction is as assured as it is surprising. Set in Los Angeles, its fascination with the surreal body fascism of the upper classes feels like the comedian's familiar territory, but the shopgirl of the book's title may surprise his fans. Mirabelle works in the glove department of Neiman's, "selling things that nobody buys any more." Spending her days waiting for customers to appear, Mirabelle "looks like a puppy standing on its hind legs, and the two brown dots of her eyes, set in the china plate of her face, make her seem very cute and noticeable." Lonely and vulnerable, she passes her evenings taking prescription drugs and drawing "dead things," while pursuing an on-off relationship with the hopeless Jeremy, who possesses "a slouch so extreme that he appears to have left his skeleton at home." Then Mr. Ray Porter steps into Mirabelle's life. He is much older, rich, successful, divorced, and selfish, desiring her "without obligation." Complicating the picture is Mirabelle's voracious rival, her fellow Neiman's employee Lisa, who uses sex "for attracting and discarding men."

The mutual incomprehension, psychological damage, and sheer vacuity practiced by all four of Martin's characters sees Shopgirl veer rather uncomfortably between a comedy of manners and a much darker work. There are some startling passages of description and interior monologue, but the characters are often rather hazy types. Martin tries too hard in his attempt to write a psychologically intense novel about West Coast anomie, but Shopgirl is still an enjoyable, if rather light, read. --Jerry Brotton

A bestselling novella about the love life of a shopgirl who works at the Neiman Marcus glove counter, written by one of our country's most acclaimed and beloved entertainers. Mirabelle, the shopgirl of the title, is a young woman, beautiful in a wallflowerish kind of way. Slightly lost, slightly off-kilter, very shy, Mirabelle charms because of all that she is not: not glamorous, not aggressive, not self-aggrandizing. Still, there is something about her that is irresistible. Beautifully written, this novella reveals a different side of Martin, one that is unexpectedly perceptive about relationships and profoundly wise when it comes to the workings of the human heart. It is the work of a "gorgeous writer capable of being at once melancholy and tart, achingly innocent and astonishingly ironic" --Elle

This book is so horrible there are no words. It's the first time I had to force myself to finish a book. It's crass to say the least. Don't waste your money on this book. I love Steve Martins films but his writing leaves much to be desired.

4 out of 5 stars This book would have been great even if you didn't know who wrote it.......2007-03-10

The fact that it is by Steve Martin is a distraction. In fact, the fact that it is written by a man is a distraction. This is a beautifully written portrait of a young woman, written with a lot of sympathy and wit. Some of the sentences are so well written it would send pangs of professional envy through the heart of any writer. The only thing I dislike about this book is that I know it is written by an older man who is quite rich, and the book is about a young woman falling for an older man who is quite rich, and that bit is really annoying as you wonder who Martin is fantasizing about. Take that bit out, though, it really is a very beautifully scripted tale and worth purchasing and reading.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent fiction which engages the heart.......2007-02-13

The novella is an art form which gives expression to a compact, intense literary experience for both author and auditor. "The Fox" by D. H. Lawrence is one such work. Another fine example and a Pulitzer prize-winner is the spare, elevated, compelling prose of Thornton Wilder's "The Bridge of San Luis Rey." "Shopgirl" is another. What is striking about "Shopgirl" is the intensity of reader-engendered emotion in response to Martin's characters. I had the experience of many in picking up the book to see whether or not Martin could write at all, and discovering to my surprise that I was unable to put it down. How much of this work is autobiographical is immaterial, since all of us are, like Odysseus in Tennyson's "Ulysses," a "part of all that we have met." What is delightful, wistful, sad, and encouraging is to watch the characters, seemingly cast in one dimension, become round, whole, living and breathing human beings in all their hope, desperation, and folly. Ray is perhaps the saddest man of all; he is not a bad man in the customary sense. He is stunted emotionally to the degree that he is unable to accept the frank, uncomplicated, generous love of Mirabelle for what it is, and never learns that no one loves without joy, and without pain. His insular nature never allows him true intimacy with her, despite her willingness to give without reservation or expectation of reward. She matures by the pain he causes her, and even Jeremy matures because he wants something for which he must reach. Two spirits grow together; one fails the impetus to mature and is left sadly behind. This novella is not stunningly brilliant, nor is it substantially lacking. It is in any case a tour-de-force for Martin as a first-novella. He has demonstrated that his range is broader by far than the "wild and crazy guy" of his younger days as a TV performer. Bravo, Mr. Martin, and bravo for a screenplay and film adaption that was intelligent and faithful to his novella. Claire Danes is simply luminous as Mirabelle, and Martin is quintessentially Ray. I'm happy to have bought the novella, and the DVD of the same title. You will enjoy both.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, even if this type of book isn't "your thing".......2007-01-26

I have to admit it. Books that center around unhappy lovelives generally bore me to unconsciousness and lead me to want to yell at the characters to get over it. With Shopgirl, however, Steve Martin shows that the genre can be engrossing, and once again establishes that he can really write. Much like his play about Einstein and Picasso meeting in a Paris cafe, there are various references to art, history, and philosophy that will be missed by many readers. I have to admit there were a couple I missed. More's the pity for me, as the analogies he draws into somewhat obscure history or philosphy are often hilarious, or at least damned compelling reading. The very first line of the book should be enough to let you know the intelligence of the writer ("When you work in the glove department at Neiman's, you are selling things that nobody buys anymore."). The book never backs down from there. I would disagree with reviewers who called the characters shallow or call Ray a "player." He is actually portrayed as someone who is searching, and just doesn't know any different. If any character came across as a caricature, it would have to be the man-hunting Lisa. Descriptions of her, and the the rest of the women coming out of the plastic surgery office, are impossible not to find simultaneously amusing and sad (unless, of course, you are one of those "patients").

5 out of 5 stars Martin on the couch, revealing himself..........2006-11-03

Who would have thought beneath the wild-and-crazy exterior of comic Steve Martin there beat a sensitive and sophisticated heart? But it does. This is a Steve Martin I'd like to see more of--his debut as a fiction writer is impressive as he takes you inside the heads of the characters of a rather awkward love-triangle.

Actually "triangle" is too clean and symmetrical a shape for these troubled souls. This is a journey of the psyche. There's not much physical action in Shopgirl, so it's surprising it translated into a movie at all, even if the movie version did have some serious problems and left behind some of the heart and soul of the story. (Oddly, Martin's narration, which works so well in the novel, bogs the movie down.) What the book does have is insight into the complexities of life (and not just sexual relationships; in fact, the sex often felt tacked on), as well as the formative events that define our personalities--Mirabelle as someone who grew up in a silent household where love and affection were not expressed, and Ray who is a divorced 50-something who has had every material success you can ask for but apparently been left back in the ninth grade when it comes to emotional and sexual development. No matter how rich and successful we may appear to be, we're always short in some department, and happiness can be elusive because of it. That's what Shopgirl is really about. At the end, two souls grow and one remains where they were when the book started. And that poor person is the one with all the money and comforts of life, the one who could most easily grow any way he wanted, if only he knew how...

What makes this a cut above average chick-lit (i.e., something by Nicholas Sparks) in my opinion is a hard-to-define earnestness. This feel real, because it must have been. (Martin has reportedly had a series of younger, less experienced lovers since his divorce, much like his fictional counterpart Ray Porter.) Shopgirl reads more like a personal diary than a novella. I don't know how much of it is from deep inside its author, but it feels like a lot of it is. I've read somewhere that he has spent--and maybe continues to spend--much time in psychoanalysis. This reads like a rap session, with Martin bearing his soul, though never in a self-indulgent way, as Woody Allen can. Martin appears to really be seaching for himself through Ray Porter throughout this book. One gets the impression by the end that the wild-and-crazy-guy is really a lonely and quiet person. Why Martin continues to debase himself with garbage like The Pink Panther remake and Cheaper By The Dozen comedies when he has a serious and sensitive side to offer--and the financial security to now thumb his nose up at Hollywood projects he doesn't like--is something I can't understand. Sheer ego, the desire for face time at any cost to his dignity, is the only reason I can fathom.

Shopgirl is a short read--about 130 pages--yet it took me a long time to finish it. Every few pages I'd find myself putting the book on my knee and staring off into space, sometimes thinking about what I'd read, sometimes continuing scenes on in my head, identifying strongly with, oddly, both main characters. This is reflective fiction. How much you get out of it will be determined by what you bring to it--the reader and his/her experiences constitute one-half the equation. But Martin has correctly realized that the ups and downs in life come not from the big moments typical of other works of this type--heart-stopping revelations, teary-eyed departures at the airport gate--but rather in the "little" moments that define a relationship: a misconstrued glance, a thoughtless comment, little white lies. Often in Shopgirl the action is brief, but the drama comes when the characters go home and mull events over in their heads. This is not a book for those looking for a plot, or compelling characters. Oddly, it's for people who want a jump start for reflecting on their own lives. And it's extremely well-written. Thank you, Steve. More, please.

This book completely changed my perception of Steve Martin. I guess I was caught up in the 80s when he was the kinda wacky comedian of cyrano de bergerac or whatever other off the wall comedy he was in during the 80s. Who knew he could write. I heard about the movie first, watched it and feel in love with it. As a woman of that age... I really related and couldn't believe that that wacky comedian was able to write a woman so well, to really understand what we really want from men. I decided to read the book and loved it even more. This book was extremely well written, loved it.

                  3 out of 5 stars Eh...........2007-06-24

This compact little novella is filled with characters who are unrealistic and hard to relate to. We are wound through a strange maze of emotions and motives and finally drawn to an unsatisfying conclusion. I've read much better, and I'm sure you have too.

                  5 out of 5 stars strikes a common chord.......2007-06-06

I thought Shopgirl was simply magnificent, mostly because it so brilliantly illustrates the age-old experience that so many of us have had... loving someone who doesn't love us back, or, at least, who doesn't love us back in the way we want to be loved. As I see it, Steve Martin has joined two archetypal polarities here... the wanting, needing, loving, totally vulnerable feminine and the elusive, hesitant, superficial masculine. Not only this, he also illustrates both of their desires to break free of these archetypes.

The book is full of symbolism... from the get-go, Mirabelle, the protagonist, is actually selling something (formal women's gloves) that no one wants to buy. As the book continues, you find that Mirabelle is selling something no one wants to buy in many, many other ways. It's her own realization of this, and Ray's realization, that leads to her growth and greater fulfillment in a life which, up to this point, has been full of disappointment.

Of course, it wouldn't be Steve Martin if it weren't also very funny.

Shopgirl is wonderful. One of my favorites.

It was slow paced and kind of depressing. I think maybe he should stick to movies.

                        Book Description

The shopgirl was the subject of popular novels, newspaper articles, and political treatises on women's work and leisure at the turn of the twentieth century. But who exactly was she, and why did she feature in so many narratives about women, sexuality, and urban life?

In Consuming Fantasies: Labor, Leisure, and the London Shopgirl, 1880-1920, Lise Shapiro Sanders examines the cultural significance of the shopgirl—both historical figure and fictional heroine—from the end of Queen Victoria's reign through the First World War. As the author reveals, the shopgirl embodied the fantasies associated with a growing consumer culture: romantic adventure, upward mobility, and the acquisition of material goods. Reading novels such as George Gissing's The Odd Women and W. Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage as well as short stories, musical comedies, and films, Sanders argues that the London shopgirl appeared in the midst of controversies over sexual morality and the pleasures and dangers of London itself. Sanders explores the shopgirl's centrality to modern conceptions of fantasy, desire, and everyday life for working women and argues for her as a key figure in cultural and social histories of the period. This innovative interdisciplinary study makes an important contribution to research on women, class, and consumer culture and will appeal to scholars, students, and enthusiasts of Victorian and Edwardian life and literature.
