Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Short, sweet and concise. Excellent reference for the digital music world........2006-05-01

I like this book. It's well organized and easy to follow. It's broken up into 28 easy to understand chapters and is a great introductory book into the exciting world of iPod ownership and the portable digital music world. Everything from accessories to managing your music and even using your iPod as a hard drive. Wow! It's a great pocket guide and reference. Now if I could just find something like this that could help me out with my new Motorola Razor cell phone, the world would be a better place!

4 out of 5 stars Outdated? - Perhaps.......2006-03-10

The previous reviewer dismissed this as outdated and suggested if you don't already own an iPod, to avoid the book. I bought the book after making the decision to buy but before I had actually made the purchase. I'm glad I bought it. I found the book highly informative both in the features and use of the iPod but also with the iTunes software. For me, it is indispensible. If you're planning on purchasing an iPod, or already have one and are trying to get maximum functionality out of both the iPod and iTunes, this is money very well spent.

3 out of 5 stars already outdated.......2005-10-28

To some extent this book, which has just been published, is already outdated. Apple has just released the Nano and announced that it will soon discontinue its iconic iPod models in favour of the Nano. So if you do not have an iPod, I suggest you avoid this book.

Otherwise, it can quickly help you with better usage of your iPod. Perhaps to share music with your friends, which is one example discussed in the text.

The book also covers iTunes, which is run on a regular Mac. Many features that can be tweaked, like the Equalizer. And the book shows how to access the iTunes music store, which is one of the biggest sellers of online music.

Book Description

The target market for this text is an introductory undergraduate course in which students have relatively little familiarity with investments and would like a practical and applied type of text. The approach of this undergraduate investments text reflects two central ideas:

1. A consistent focus on the student as an individual investor or investment advisor.

2. A consistent, unified treatment of the four basic types of financial instruments stocks, bonds, options, and futures focusing on their characteristics and features, their risks and returns, and the markets in which they trade.

The focus on the student as the audience paired with Brad Jordans conversational writing style makes this a very relevant and understandable text. This text is a great complement to trading simulations, especially Stock-Trak, by covering the basic material early enough to begin trading in the first two weeks of the course.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-01-23

This is a great investments textbook. Very easy to read and arranged in a readable format.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2006-11-27

I was forced to buy this book for a finance class. I look forward to throwing it away. The explanations in this book are poor, and as a financial reference, this book is useless. I had better luck with Google. There are a lot of finance books out there that do a much better job covering the same topics in this book. Don't waste your money on this one.

1 out of 5 stars This seller sucks!!!.......2006-09-21

This seller took a month to get me my book, never responded to my e-mails, and then sent me the wrong edition! Order at your own risk!!!

1 out of 5 stars The worst financial textbook I have EVER seen.......2006-03-19

This book is the biggest waste of money that I have been forced to suffer through. The examples in each chapter are poorly written and are so much simpler than the actual "test questions" at the end of each chapter so as to be useless. Additionally, the selected answers in the back of the book seem to be wrong as often as they are right. You couldn't pay me enough to recommend this book to anyone.

            Book Description

Does the stock market overreact? Recent capital market turbulences have cast doubt whether the behaviour of stock markets is in line with rational investor behaviour. This book investigates recent evidence of reversals in the cross section of stock returns. The surprising finding of this monograph is that reversals in stock returns are parallelled by movements in fundamentals. Outperformance in the stock market is driven by outperformance in corporate earnings. This monograph analyses this effect and provides background reasoning both from a theoretical and from an empirical point of view. The reader will pursue the question whether capital markets are efficient and thereby obtain a deeper understanding of the relationship between stock returns and underlying fundamentals.

                              Book Description

The seismic applications of the reciprocity theorem developed in this book are partly based on lecture notes and publications from Professor de Hoop. Every student Professor de Hoop has taught knows the egg-shaped figure (affectionately known as "de Hoop's egg") that plays such an important role in his theoretical description of acoustic, electromagnetic and elastodynamic wave phenomena.

On the one hand this figure represents the domain for the application of a reciprocity theorem in the analysis of a wavefield and on the other hand it symbolizes the power of a consistent wavefield description of this theorem.

The roots of the reciprocity theorem lie in Green's theorem for Laplace's equation and Helmholtz's extension to the wave equation. In 1894, J.W. Strutt, who later became Lord Rayleigh, introduced in his book The Theory of Sound this extension under the name of Helmholtz's theorem. Nowadays it is known as Rayleigh's reciprocity theorem.

Progress in seismic data processing requires the knowledge of all the theoretical aspects of the acoustic wave theory. The reciprocity theorem was chosen as the central theme of this book as it constitutes the fundaments of the seismic wave theory. In essence, two states are distinguished in this theorem. These can be completely different, although sharing the same time-invariant domain of application, and they are related via an interaction quantity. The particular choice of the two states determines the acoustic application, in turn making it possible to formulate the seismic experiment in terms of a geological system response to a known source function.

In linear system theory, it is well known that the response to a known input function can be written as an integral representation where the impulse response acts as a kernel and operates on the input function. Due to the temporal invariance of the system, this integral representation is of the convolution type. In seismics, the temporal behaviour of the system is dealt with in a similar fashion; however the spatial interaction needs a different approach. The reciprocity theorem handles this interaction by identifying one state with the spatial impulse function, also known as the Green's function, while the other state is connected with the actual source distribution. In general, the resulting integral representation is not a spatial convolution. Moreover, the systematic use of the reciprocity theorem leads to a hierarchical description of the seismic experiment in terms of increasing complexity. Also from an educational point of view this approach provides a hierarchy and the student learns to break down the seismic problem into constituent partial solutions.

This book should contribute to the understanding that the reciprocity theorem is a powerful tool in the analysis of the seismic experiment.

                                  Book Description

The purpose of this book is to review the current state of this quickly developing field. Up until now, there has been no concise review available of the rather diverse aspects of this field. This book gives a basic introduction to the concepts behind Bloch oscillations. It describes how the physics of high field transport has been investigated through a broad range of experimental techniques such as interband and intraband optical spectroscopy and transport experiments. Possible applications and further trends are also discussed.

Ignorance is bliss, or so hopes Antoine, the lead character in Martin Page's stinging satire, How I Became Stupid—a modern day Candide with a Darwin Award-like sensibility. A twenty-five-year-old Aramaic scholar, Antoine has had it with being brilliant and deeply self-aware in today's culture. So tortured is he by the depth of his perception and understanding of himself and the world around him that he vows to denounce his intelligence by any means necessary—in order to become “stupid” enough to be a happy, functioning member of society. What follows is a dark and hilarious odyssey as Antoine tries everything from alcoholism to stock-trading in order to lighten the burden of his brain on his soul.

5 out of 5 stars one day read.......2007-06-29

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was randomly browsing at my public library and decided to give it a chance after reading the back cover. When I got home I started to read, and once I started, I couldn't stop. I read the entire novel that afternoon.

The main character, Antoine, finds himself unable to live as he is, due to his intellect. So he decides to "dumb it down" to see how that goes. I think the reason the book worked for me was because I could relate to the main character.

Worried about dropping the cash to buy this book? Go to your local library. Then, if you hate it, you won't feel compelled to tell everyone how much it sucked. Because really, once you get past the self-loathing of Antoine, there is much to be said about the mechanics of society in this short novel.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Shockingly bad.......2007-06-07

I couldn't agree more with the person who said she rarely writes Amazon reviews but felt compelled to write one in this case. This book is spectacularly bad. It starts with some vague potential for interest and then explodes in a fireworks show of simplistic ideas, awful writing, and trite morals. A pathetic attempt at satire, it contains nothing that has not been said, infinitely more effectively and cleverly, thousands of times before. The fact that it has become a cult favorite is incredibly depressing, not because of the general agreement with the book's message (of course, Page's point is absolutely correct, but that does not a good book make), but because it proves the total inability of the average reader to recognize what a good novel is. I question even labeling this execrable piece of self-indulgent nonsense a novel. There is nothing "novel" about it. It becomes clearer with each turn of the page why the only award this book has received was given by high school students; only inexperienced teenagers could find anything fresh here. Without doubt, one of the worst, perhaps the worst, book I have ever read. Worth reading only if you wish to be thrown into a rage.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, but undeveloped, and very poor writing.......2007-05-21

I found this book in a bookstore, read what was on the back cover and found it an interesting concept. Having some extra money, I decided to take a chance and purchase it. The characters are undeveloped and boring, the attempts at humor are not amusing, the so-called eloquence is contrived and pompous, the dialog is just poor and the "paradoxes" are little (if any) more than blatant contradictions with no purpose behind them. Still, there is an interesting concept, and the book occasionally has its moments, but overall the entire work is very shallow.

5 out of 5 stars Seriously - how we all became quite so dumb.......2006-08-03

I loved the book. I loved it so much, I didn't buy it. But I thought I'd give it a good review. I swear, it was an awesome book - but Martin's character didn't buy his books either, so there was no guilt on my part.
Reading it, I re-realized how the world and it's race of rats and it's artificial pressure for us to need things we only want makes us really, quite dumb. It inadvertently forces us to give up the things we love for the things we don't really need. And if that means I hate capitalism, as some of the past reviewers might believe, then I very possibly do. Hate the system that helps my fellow man/woman/animal shut off their true desire in exchange for currency.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible But Short.......2006-07-31

                                  Hate capitalism?

Then you'll love this little gem!

The title and first few pages of _How I Became Stupid_ hooked me. I enjoyed the first half quite a bit. It's fun and witty. It's all downhill from there. The humor disappears. The fun is gone. Now it becomes essentially a rant by the author about his perceived evils of capitalism.

                                  Main Character's Words:
Is so smart that he does not have any strong feelings about any particular subject: he is truly able to see all sides of an issue.

                                  Main Character's Actions:
Hates capitalism, fast food, stock brokers, most forms of entertainment, etc., and is basically an all-round elitist snob. But no strong opinions, right?

                                  Man Character's Words:
Is governed by very strong morals.

                                  Main Character's Actions:
Has no problems stealing nearly all of his food, not paying rent to a landlord with Alzheimer's disease, destroying an innocent company, and stealing books one page at a time (even though he also uses the library). He actually seems quite proud of his book stealing. What a guy!

                                  It gets worse.

The only redeeming thing about this book is that while it was being written, Martin Page wasn't running around slashing car tires and breaking store windows. Ugh.
