A typical plant control system will be subject to the undesirable influence of exogenous commands and disturbances. In order to track and reject these Professor Isidori and his co-authors have designed a feedback control system based on embedding a model of these disturbances within the controller itself - the so-called "internal model".

Beginning with a review of the fundamental principles of internal-model-based feedback control design, Robust Autonomous Guidance moves on to expound recent enhancements to such designs and then to their implementation in systems operating under conditions of great uncertainty.

The three case studies presented: attitude control of a low-Earth-orbit satellite and the landing of fixed- and rotary-winged aircraft on a ship involve control systems coping with a high degree of nonlinear behaviour. The key issues addressed in each case study are the design of an adaptive internal model for the specific tracking task and of stabilizing control capable of steering the tracking error to zero while keeping all internal states bounded for any arbitrarily large but bounded envelope of initial data and uncertain parameters. Nested saturated controls form the basis of novel tools for asymptotic analysis and design.

Robust Autonomous Guidance will be of great interest to academic and industrial researchers working with nonlinear control systems and to engineers involved in the design of aerospatial guidance systems. It will also be a useful reference for graduate students working with non-linear systems.

This book is about the legal, economical, and practical assessment and management of risky activities arising from routine, catastrophic environmental and occupational exposures to hazardous agents. It begins where emission and exposure analysis ends by providing estimates or predictions of deleterious exposures. The book covers the essential aspects of environmental and health law, environmental economics, applied statistical and probabilistic methods, fundamental notions of applied epidemiology and toxicology, as well as decision analysis, to provide an integrated overview of how risk assessment and management combine to produce sound societal outcomes. Risk-based methods play a pivotal role in identifying and ranking alternative, sustainable choices, while accounting for uncertainty and variability. Specifically, most reductions in risks require a balancing of the costs and benefits associated with the action to reduce exposure to a hazard and thus risk. This balancing necessarily involves linking exposure and response through causation. Fundamentally, in risk assessment and management, science and law intersect through legal and scientific causation to the point that the failure to provide a sound causal argument can make an otherwise beneficial law or regulation invalid. The contents of the book have been written with the student’s need in mind: practice, applications and integration take precedence over theory, accomplishing these functions with unparalleled breadth and depth, to provide the methods and criteria for sound decision-making of risk or uncertainty. In addition, each chapter concludes with sample questions to illustrate concepts.

I know it was written by the Father of Informatics but............2007-07-01

Everyone in the field of medical informatics knows Ed Shortliffe. He has done a lot of pioneering work in the field. However, I think this book was just so-so. It is a brief overview of the field of informatics. I found it difficult to read - nothing in the book "grabs" me.

I wouldn't recommend it, really. It may be worth a look because it is authored by Shortliffe.

This book felt like a mindless chatter to me. I picked this book up after reading rave reviews about it. The first few pages talks about rich girls being divorced, it failed very terribly to hold my attention. I know I am being very critical here, but it just didn't do it for me.

Another vapid novel.......2007-08-03

I agree with those reviewers who said this novel is little more than an endless parade of the young and fabulous, who care more about clothing than their own happiness, and who think that marriage is more about finding the man with the most money than finding love. It does a disservice to women who look for more in life than the next party or couture designer. I do enjoy chick lit, but this novel is a sad representation of that genre. I am only glad I borrowed this book instead of wasting money on it!

A man's perspective.......2007-08-01

I read this book on holiday with my girlfriend, out of desperation without access to an English-language bookstore. My girlfriend took great delight in capturing on film the moment of me reading it, but in retrospect, prefers to avoid mentioning that she also read the thing.

It's not enlightening, it's not well written, it's not even particularly entertaining. My girlfriend wrote down a couple of the designer names that she'd never heard of, for later research, but that was about it for us.

The main character is weak, vacuous, vapid and dull. Her husband is a cliche (in a brilliantly cut designer shirt that accentuates his roughly-chiseled bone structure, no less...) as is every other character. The problem with writing that someone is the most perfect/beautiful/charming person EVER, is that if you can't come up with a new adjective later in the book, the whole thing seems ingenuous. Which, of course, it is.

Why do we care about these ridiculous characters that are so hard to relate to? Why are we supporting Ms Sykes' ridiculous lifestyle?

Sadly, the book was only okay...perhaps, it was my fault for expecting too much from the author after reading "Bergdorf Blondes." On a brighter note, "The Debutant Divorcee" was still somewhat entertaining, and carried the similar sense of humor as expected by an author like Plum Sykes.

Pleasant Surprise .......2007-07-23

I was pleasantly surprised by Debutante Divorcee. I read Bergorf Blondes because there was so much hype around it, but I was quite disappointed with its absolute shallowness. I decided to give Plum Sykes one more chance, and I was happy I did. Debutante Divorcee is inarguably "light reading." That said, it has a nice plot and the protagonist is likable. As long as you do not go in expecting much in the way of intellectual stimulation, you will enjoy the book.
