No tutorial.......2006-01-03

While this book is well written and provides an overview, it is important to note that there is absolutely no tutorial. If you are expecting an instructional section that is set up as a series of steps that progress through levels of difficulty and understanding that provide a working knowlege of the subject (as is implied by the word tutorial in the title)you will not find that in this book.

As a software engineer moving from VC++ to .Net and C#, I did not see the value in this book. Yes, I wanted to understand the .Net environment, but the pertinent subject matter contained in this book was readily available in other books such as "Programming C#" by Jesse Liberty.

The first few chapters are OK, but the author drags on and subsequently put me to sleep. After covering the material that I was most interested in, he moves on to Web programming issues, which are not relevant to my work.

To be honest, I read the first few chapters, skimmed the next few, saw the web info, and returned the book. Maybe I did not give it a fair shot, but I did not see it being useful reference material to hang on to as I navigate thru the world of .Net and C#.

Great flow and excellent content in this easy-to-read and easy-to-follow book on .Net. Highly recommend it for technical managers as well as business users interested in an introduction to .Net

Solid introduction to .NET concepts........2002-08-23

This is a good book. As usual for Wrox titles, there are numerous misspellings and the editing is a bit sloppy. Also, the nature of Wrox books with their multiple authors lends to a somewhat inconsistent flow from chapter to chapter. However, these traits of Wrox books can be forgiven for the solid content "Understanding the .NET Framework" provides.

The book provides a breakdown of the major .NET topics including Web forms, Windows Forms, Data access, COM integration and Web services. Each of these topics is covered in its own chapter with helpful examples to illustrate the points covered. I found myself coding each of the examples in Visual Studio.NET and learning from each of them.

The examples are mostly complete, though the biggest challenge I had was getting the "Remoting" example in Chapter 6 to work. This was because of the need to associate a strong name with the assembly as well as register the assemnbly with the "sn" and "regsvcs" utilities. These required steps weren't obvious to me at first and weren't documented. Also, the authors state the examples could be built without VS.NET. In theory this is true, but impractical because of the associated files VS.NET creates on your behalf in projects.

Some of the highlights include the COM/.NET integration example, the Web Services example, the data type information from Chapter 2 and the excellent breakdown of the WDSL XML format in Chapter 7.

Water in the Middle East and North Africa region is a source of major social and economic problems stemming from scarcity, variability, unreliable services, and environmental damage. The situation is likely to become even worse in the future, unless current practices change: by 2050 per capita availability will fall by half, water quality will deteriorate further, and more aquifers will become depleted. Climate change is predicted to worsen the problems by increasing temperatures and causing more droughts and floods. While water professionals have been advocating comprehensive water reforms for years and many countries have improved their water policies and institutions, some of the most politically sensitive elements of reform remain untouched. This report suggests that a series of factors are now emerging that represent a potential opportunity to break this impasse. Turning the potential into reality will depend upon three things: Adopting reforms that respond to the dynamics of the political economy; Recognizing that water policies cannot act alone, but that water outcomes are often determined by other sectors, such as trade, agriculture, finance, and energy; and Choosing policies and practices that make government institutions and service providers more accountable to the public. Expolration on techniques to find Voice/Unvoice/Pitch.......2001-02-17

This book may be one of the rare book that provides good technical metrail on various algorithms to decide on voice / unvoice of given speech signal. As a next step, this book also provides very detail information on "how to find Pitch of given Speech Signal". This book may be useful for "Very low bit rate Voice codec designer". But the only warning is that "algorithms discussed in this book belongs to on or before 1983".

But while their on-screen chemistry is electric-hot, off-screen the arrogant hunk treats her with total disdain ... or, worse still, ignores her. Raveena's one consolation is that things couldn't possibly get any worse.

Fun, bouncy and sparkly!.......2007-06-05

I read this book in two days because it was so entertaining and bubbly. It's filled with quirky characters and cute one-liners and best of all, it is set in the Bollywood scene in India from an Indian-American girl's perspective. The story's culture clashes cross so many borders - I'm a Latina and could see me in Raveena's shoes in Mexico. It's a light, breezy book to lift your spirits. The revenge aspect was a bit forced and maybe a tad farfedtched, but who cares, that's what true Bollywood is all about! I'm off to buy another one of Sonia's book!

Sonia Singh came up with some great characters -- the uncle, "Daddy," the Bollywood star and his family. The characters were worthy of a better book. The author touches on some interesting points, that India is not a third world country -- there are two Indias, rich and poor, living together. I enjoyed when she spoke about Bollywood films as an escape for those in poverty.

The scene in which the Reena gets her revenge was, to be blunt, ridiculous, if not for her actions, then for the speech she gives.

This book was an entertaining read, but it could have been so much better.

Gushy, but nothing new.......2006-02-19

Rather uninspired writing. OK as a read if you want a superficial timepass chick lit saga set in the Bollywood backstage, but not really anything worth spending time on.

A Bollywood-type novel about Bollywood.......2005-12-20

Sonia Singh's "Bollywood Confidential" centered around Raveena, a struggling actress in Hollywood who was offered a leading role in a Bollywood film. Despite her doubts, Raveena went to Bombay in the hope that she would make it big there and hopefully the Hollywood directors would then "notice" her. Things did not turn quite as Raveena expected as she realized the director who hired her was somewhat of a pervert and she had to stay with her distant uncle as the director was too cheap to put her up in a good hotel. The only consolation to all this was that the leading actor in her film was Bollywood's hottest actor, Siddharth.

This was a very average book for me as the writing was very simple and at times, I wondered if I was reading a teen lit. There were hardly any plot or character development and it truly read like a Bollywood-inspired novel. The one good thing about the book was that I did learn something about Bollywood. I wouldn't recommend readers to purchase this book even if they are huge Bollywood fans and they are better off getting this book from the library.

Sure it's chick lit but I liked it and I am no chick..........2005-08-31

I read this one afternoon and enjoyed it. The book was funny, interesting, and overall a nice read on a summer afternoon. Although I am nowhere close to being the target demographic, even I, the single, white guy in his 30s, thought it was fun. They should make a movie out of it though.
