            Book Description

" Precambrian Ore Deposits of the East European and Siberian Cratons" is a sequel to " Precambrian Geology of the USSR" published in 1993 (English edition), in which the main emphasis was on the stratigraphy, magmatism and metamorphism of Precambrian assemblages in both ancient cratons (East European and Siberian) as well as in Phanerozoic fold belts and mobile regions. Mineral deposits associated with Precambrian structures were mentioned only in passing, since space restrictions in the earlier work did not allow even a brief outline of major deposits. The present book fills that gap.

              Book Description

Research in carbon nanotubes has reached a horizon that is impacting a variety of fields, such as nanoelectronics, flat panel display, composite materials, sensors, nanodevices and novel instrumentation. The unique structures of the nanotubes result in numerous superior physical and chemical properties, such as the strongest mechanical strength and the highest thermal conductivity, room temperature ballistic quantum conductance, electromechanical coupling, and super surface functionality.
Among the various analytical techniques, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) has played a key role in the discovery and characterization of carbon nanotubes. It may be claimed that carbon nanotubes might not have been discovered without using HRTEM. There is a great need of a book that addresses specifically the theory, techniques and application of electron microscopy and associated techniques for nanotube research. The objective of this book is to fill this gap.
The potential of HRTEM is now well received in wide ranging communities such as materials science, physics, chemistry and electrical engineering. TEM is a powerful technique that is indispensable for characterizing nanomaterials, and Electron Microscopy of Nanotubes focuses on the applications of TEM in structural, electronic, and property characterization of carbon nanotubes and demonstrates how a comprehensive application of HRTEM and associated new techniques for nanotube research can be applied to a wide range of materials.
The book contains 12 chapters and the authors for the chapters are the world prominent scientists specializing in the field. The contents of the book can be separated into three parts. The first part composed of chapters 1-6 is about the diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy of carbon-based nanotubes. The second part (chapters 7-9) describes the physical property nanomeasurements of carbon nanotubes based on in-situ TEM. The last part is about non-carbon based tubular structures and related structures.

                Description:
Ceria nanoparticles supported on aligned carbon nanotubes (CeO"2/ACNTs), a novel adsorbent for Cr(VI) from drinking water, were prepared by chemical reaction of CeCl"3 with NaOH in aligned carbon nanotube solution and subsequent heat treatment. The best Cr(VI) adsorption effect of CeO"2/ACNTs occurs at a pH range of 3.0-7.4. The largest adsorption capacity of CeO"2/ACNTs reaches 30.2mgg^-^1 at an equilibrium Cr(VI) concentration of 35.3mgl^-^1 at pH 7.0. The experiment results suggest that CeO"2/ACNTs have great potential applications in environmental protection.

Helen Fielding's novel Bridget Jones's Diary had a meandering, rather shapeless shape (as diaries will). Both fans and critics of that 1998 smash hit will be surprised to find that the author's first novel, previously unpublished in the United States, is a lot more sophisticated in structure. And Cause Celeb is nearly as fun as Bridget Jones's Diary, which is saying a lot, especially since Fielding's debut is about African famine. The narrator, Rosie Richardson, runs a relief camp in the invented country of Nambula. Henry, the most flippant member of her staff, wears a T-shirt that tersely lists the various motivations for relief workers to come to Africa: "(a) Missionary? (b) Mercenary? (c) Misfit? (d) Broken heart?" As Rosie herself admits, she is "a c/d hybrid and soft in the head to boot."

Flashbacks reveal that in London, Rosie had fallen in love with an erratic, emotionally abusive (but adorable!) newscaster. As she trailed about town in Oliver's wake, she came to know his in-crowd of movie stars, directors, and musicians. Her split with this media magnet is what initially sent her to Africa. Four years into Rosie's exile, however, a plague of locusts descends on the crops of a neighboring country, and refugees begin to flood her camp. She decides there's only one thing to do: go back home and round up her old celeb pals for a benefit TV special.

It should come as no shock that the London sequences are great fun, as is the climactic collision between movie stars and refugees. But the real treat is Fielding's handling of the camp sequences. Rosie and her staff struggle with their petty emotions as they confront the incredible suffering in front of them. Henry watches in disbelief as some starving refugees move their tent to a better location: "Never mind the old malnutrition--you go for the view." A newswoman visits the camp, and, fraught with emotion after first seeing the starving children, she caresses Rosie, whose response is this: "I hope the famine hadn't turned her into a lesbian." Fielding has found a voice that is both compassionate and irreverent, a rare and wonderful combination. --Claire Dederer

                  Book Description

Disillusioned with life as a literary publicist in London and sick of her hotshot TV presenter boyfriend, twenty-something Rosie Richardson decides to give up glitz for good deeds and escape to Africa to run a refugee camp. When famine strikes and a massive refugee influx threatens to overwhelm the camp, officials drag their heels. The only way to get food fast is to bring the celebrities first, so Rosie returns to London to organize a star-studded and risky emergency appeal. Deftly skewering the world of celebrity fundraising, Fielding's debut novel is both comic and thought-provoking.

Cause Celeb crackles with insights into the nature of fame, passion, and altruism in our time, all the while following an unlikely-but hugely likeable-heroine.

"""B.B.J.""--Before Bridget Jones Helen Fielding's highly acclaimed first novel brings all the insight and charm of the Bridget Jones novels to a brilliantly witty, thought-provoking take on today's woman--and today's world Cause Celeb--the critically acclaimed debut novel from a writer with a boundless grasp of the existential and the uproarious--has just landed in America. Deftly skewering the world of celebrity fundraising, Fielding has created an alternately comic and moving satire that straddles the glitter of media London and the horrors of an African refugee crisis. Rosie Richardson, a twenty-something literary puffette is in a totally nonfunctional relationship with an unevolved but irresistible adult male--a hotshot TV presenter who plunges her into the glitzy, bitchy inane lifestyle of London's It people. Disillusioned with the celebrity world, Rosie escapes to run a refugee camp in the African desert. When famine strikes and a massive refugee influx heads for the camp, governments and agencies drag their heels. Bringing her former media savvy to the fore, realizing the only way to get food out fast is to bring celebrities first, Rosie returns to the life and man she fled to organize a star-studded emergency appeal from famine-racked Africa. Seamlessly bridging cataclysm and farce through the insights of a modern-day everywoman, Cause Celeb crackles with insight into fame, passion, and altruism in our time. "

                  Customer Reviews:

                  4 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-07-04

I really enjoyed reading this book. Some politics were inserted in the book, but Fielding managed to keep it lighthearted. I recommend all of Fielding's books. Her writing style has drawn me to British humor and I can't seem to get enough.

4 out of 5 stars Not as funny as Bridget, but strong in other ways.......2007-04-15

Two years before Helen Fielding published Bridget Jones's Diary, she put out Cause Celeb, the story of how literary publicist Rosie Richardson ends up running a refugee camp in northern Africa and getting pushed into the funny, often hypocritical world of celebrity charity. The book essentially has three parts: (a) Rosie's love life in London, (b) Rosie in the refugee camp, and (c) Rosie organizes a celebrity charity event.

Part A is like Bridget Jones's Diary except not quite as funny. It's still entertaining, though. Part B is what makes the book most worthwhile. I read the book after encountering comments from Dorothea Hilhorst that Fielding's novel captures the nuances of non-governmental organization work much more accurately than official reports tend to: "The novel...brings out how this NGO is shaped by actors in the organization and their surrounding networks. These people carry out activities according to their understanding of the situation and follow the whims of their personalities, motivated by various combinations of sacrifice, self-interest, vanity and compassion... The novel delightfully turns the refugees into real people--good and bad, loveable and pitiful--who actively endeavor to enrol NGO staff members and visitors to provide the necessary assistance" [1]. I agree that Fielding does this well.

Part C is the weakest, but it pokes some lively, enjoyable fun at celebrities getting involved in charity, both their motives and their lack of real knowledge about the issues.

Overall, I found the book engaging and entertaining and read it in just a week.

Note, for those who are concerned about this sort of thing, that the book has a couple of sexual situations and quite a bit of strong language, as I imagine you would encounter if you actually organized a celebrity charity event.

[1] Dorothea Hilhorst, The Real World of NGOs: Discourses, Diversity, and Development (London: Zed Books), 2003, quoted in Lewis, Rodgers, and Woolcock, "The Fiction of Development: Literary Representation as a Source of Authoritative Knowledge."

2 out of 5 stars Bridget Jones goes to Africa.......2007-02-14

Ever wonder what it would be like if Bridget Jones got a job in an African refuge camp during a famine? Wonder no more! This is a valiant attempt to juxtapose the life of celebrities in London with starving masses in Africa, and the crassness of the celebrity-charity culture, but it just doesn't work. A proto-Bridget-Jones character has a bad relationship, so the logical thing to do is to became the administrator of an African refuge camp (???). I think it would have been more effective if the book just stayed in London, because the parts in Africa are contrived and pat.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite reads of the past 10 years!.......2006-12-12

Forget Bridget Jones Diary. This is a witty, funny, articulate book that also casts a pretty stark light on the world of celebrity altruism as well as the challenge of coming into ones own self.

Rosie Richardson is young, cute, works in London, and by dint of happenstance and perserverance, has a boyfriend who is a well-known television personality.

When he dumps her, she chucks the whole scene and ends up working with some kind of non-governmental aid organization in Africa. She's compelled to return to the celebrity world when in Africa they keep hearing reports of an impending drought in the bush that will overwhelm their existing relief capabilities.

Fielding takes a story that could be trite and turns it into something that feels very real. She really captures the silliness of the celebrity party scene, the varied, complex reasons aid workers do what they do, the posturing and positioning that goes on with celebrity cause endorsements.

I found this book very entertaining, and to my surprise, on more than one occasion very touching.

5 out of 5 stars Better (though not as silly) than Bridget.......2006-06-24

I know everyone loves Bridget Jones's Diary, so I guess I'm in the minority preferring Cause Celebre. Bridget's a frothy work, there's not much to it and not much to the heroine. Rosie in Cause Celebre has an epiphany when she realizes that her frivolous life in London is just that: frivolous. Instead of shopping for shoes to make herself feel better, she abandons the world she knows to help others.

It's not as pleasant and fun a book as BJD, but it's a more important one and, for me, ultimately more worthwhile.

Helen Fielding's highly acclaimed first novel brings all the insight and charm of the Bridget Jones novels to a brilliantly witty, thought-provoking take on today's woman-and today's world. Cause Celeb-the critically acclaimed debut novel from a writer with a boundless grasp of the existential and the uproarious-has just landed in America. Deftly skewering the world of celebrity fundraising, Fielding has created an alternately comic and moving satire that straddles the glitter of media London and the horrors of an African refugee crisis. Rosie Richardson, a twenty-something literary puffette is in a totally nonfunctional relationship with an unevolved but irresistible adult male-a hotshot TV presenter who plunges her into the glitzy, bitchy inane lifestyle of London's It people. Disillusioned with the celebrity world, Rosie escapes to run a refugee camp in the African desert. When famine strikes and a massive refugee influx heads for the camp, governments and agencies drag their heels. Bringing her former media savvy to the fore, realizing the only way to get food out fast is to bring celebrities first, Rosie returns to the life and man she fled to organize a star- studded emergency appeal from famine-racked Africa. Seamlessly bridging cataclysm and farce through the insights of a modern-day everywoman, Cause Celeb crackles with insight into fame, passion, and altruism in our time.
