Great starting lab manual........2007-07-21
I found the manual to cover the basics of computer repair and maintenance. I would not purchase this manual without the textbook. If you have previous repair experience, you probably do not need the textbook. The manual works great for people who learn by doing rather than cramming.

Down to basics.......2001-01-28
This lab manual goes hand in hand with the Enhanced A+ Guide To Managing & Maintaining Your PC by Jean Andrews. The information is basic enough for a beginner to delve into the mysteries of the computer's innards. I'm currently using it in a college class as a back up to the text and find it very informative and helpful.
A+ Guide to managing & Maintaining Your PC 2nd Edition.......1999-11-24
Good book, but outdated. Third Edition is out, am waiting to see it
Needs updating and editing.......1999-09-19
Book needs editing. What is the definition of a transformer? Depends on where you look in the book. Doesn't mention USB or Firewire. Stick with Scott Mueller's book Upgrading and Repairing PC's.

Book Description
This book presents a synthesis of the principal environmental characteristics of the Cretaceous in East and South Asia. The research was accomplished under IGCP project 350, which deals with the biological, climatological and physical environments of this region during the Cretaceous.
This synthesis discusses aspects of stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleontology, geochemistry, tectonics, petrology, mineralogy, and geophysics. The research results are summarised by country, and include Far East Russia, Mongolia, eastern China, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and India. Although these countries do not encompass the entire region, this coverage provides an excellent perspective of the evolution of the region during the Cretaceous.
The records incorporated in this book present a wealth of marine and nonmarine data on climate, biotic diversity, circulation and chemistry of the ocean as well as fundamental plume tectonism. The latter appears to have caused much of the environmental change in this broad region, including both an enhanced greenhouse effect and high sea levels.

Book Description
Quantum groups and quantum algebras as well as non-commutative differential geometry are important in mathematics and considered to be useful tools for model building in statistical and quantum physics. This book, addressing scientists and postgraduates, contains a detailed and rather complete presentation of the algebraic framework. Introductory chapters deal with background material such as Lie and Hopf superalgebras, Lie super-bialgebras, or formal power series. Great care was taken to present a reliable collection of formulae and to unify the notation, making this volume a useful work of reference for mathematicians and mathematical physicists.

Book Description
The man who saved Christianity - grateful words spoken by millions after Dr. Jonathan Weber revealed the truth about an archaeological dig two years ago.
But Jon isn't interested in the hype. He's far more concerned with how people are being misled by prophecy enthusiasts and their bizarre end-times scenarios, particularly the wrong-headed predictions of his nemesis, Melvin Morris Merton.
Still, Jon is a professor, not a crusader. He's happy with his life of teaching (Harvard and Hebrew University), writing (a best-selling biography of Jesus), and research (Near East studies). He's also a newlywed, deeply in love with his brilliant and beautiful wife, Shannon. Not even an annoying lawsuit from Merton can shake his world.
But Joshua Ben-Yosef can.
This Israeli speaks a dozen languages - fluently and without accent. His words ripple with wisdom and authority, and crowds follow him, enthralled. He heals the sick, gives sight to the blind, casts out demons, and even raises the dead.
Once again, Jon is drawn into a hot pursuit of the truth that at times casts him into the very lonely, very dangerous role of one man against the world.
Review the evidence, join the dig near Nazareth that uncovers a first-century mosaic, and find out if three lines of Hebrew could change the course of history.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as its predecessor, but a good read nonetheless........2007-05-05
No spoilers
I'll start off by saying that More Than a Skeleton is not as good as book it is a follow up to, A Skeleton in God's Closet. I gave the latter five stars, while I give this book four stars. Having said that, this is still a good read and if you read and liked the first book, then you should by all means pick this one up too.
The plot descriptions here are pretty accurate, so I'll skip that. I will say that the reason why this book isn't quite as good is that it seemed to me to drag along in a few spots and I sort of wanted it to pick up. I'd describe the first book's pace as 100 mph without stopping at all to let you catch your breath, while I'd describe this book's pace as about 85 mph, but it was still a fun read.
If you've already read the first book (or the author's other works) then you know that one of the great aspects about Maier's writing is that he avoids the pitfalls of so many other authors of the religious (read Christian) mystery genre by not siding with either extreme: he's not too preachy about the greatness of religion, nor does he bash and attempt to discredit everything about religion.
Bottom line is that this book is great history and an interesting story, and if you liked the first book, then you will definitely devour this one too.
Awesome.......2007-04-04
Maier has such knowledge of Bible history & archeology. His stories are intriguing & fasinating. They keep you wanting more.
Looked forward to reading--disappointed.......2006-07-31
I really liked the first book--A Skeleton in God's Closet--as kind of a DaVinci Code alternative. I was really looking forward to this one, but just could not get into it. Besides all the alcohol usage and the semi-suggestive love scenes, the main character hardly seems to be a spiritual person. (The same issues could be raised in the first book, but the plot really [...] in.)
While I agree with much of the author's eschatology, I dislike the way that he makes fun of and dismisses so many Christians who hold the popular dispensational view. Not all dispensationalists are raving lunatics. Many have very solid minsitries--men like John MacArthur, Chuck Swindoll, Erwin Lutzer, Joe Stowell, Woodrow Kroll, Warren Wiersbe and countless others. It seems that the author thinks more highly of the pope than evangelcials who hold a different eschatology.
However, there is a little chart in the book that illustrates all the different millennial views. I used it in my Sunday school class and it was very helpful.
Bottom line--just too much stuff I want to read for me to stick with this one. Disappointed.
Throught Provoking Concept.......2006-01-04
I have to say, a lot of people will find this book to appear unbiblical if they do not know their Scriptures exceptionally well. The Scriptures do not say, "The 2nd Coming is the final coming" - otherwise the dispensational millenialists ("Left Behind" ideology) would really be in trouble since they have at least 2 returns of Christ, the "hidden" rapture before the tribulation (book 1 in the Left Behind series), as well as the "glorious appearing" (the final book in the Left Behind series).
This book is a good example of what theologians (like myself) refer to as "speculative theology" - theology based not on what Scripture says, but what Scripture has not discussed one way or the other. He asks the question: could Christ have an "intermediate return" before the "glorious appearing," but nothing like what the "Left Behind" ideology is projecting? Could the current state of Israel be about bringing forth this intermediate return, and not the final one? Or could it have nothing to do with the final return? All these questions are thrown out there for the reader to contemplate and consider. Excellent piece, well worth the money.
Disappointing Takes away the "Blessed Hope".......2005-08-05
This type of book takes away the "Hope" and the "comfort one another with these words" spoken of by the Apostle Paul. Of course, it is FICTION and should be read as such. Anyone who studies their Bible would never believe the fallacies put forth in this book. Jesus is coming soon. If we survive the tribulation, we'll KNOW EXACTLY when the second coming is (when every eye shall see him) So that leaves one with the question, "When does our Lord and Saviour arrive as a thief in the night?" Doesn't even deserve one star.
Book Description
The late Hugh Artemis Solon Saturnicus Reginald Arthur Rune, hailed as the guru's guru, penned more than eight million words of genius. However, vital chapters which could have changed the course of history were suppressed—and two youths set out to recover them.
Customer Reviews:
The Book of Ultimate Truths (Mass Market Paperback).......2006-01-22
Unfair judgement of this item!! After a month of waiting Amazon can't ship it or the Antipope. US Rankin fans beware, this is not necessarily a proper outlet for order.
This book defines madness..........2003-05-01
First of all, I don't understand why this guy isn't that popular (at least in the USA)! His sense of humour is unlike anything you would have ever read in your life. Laced with witty humour, brilliant use of words and insane ideas, his plots keep getting better and better with successive novels. However, this one remains a classic to the very end. Its about Hugo Rune and all his crazy theories about life (well, at least the life of a screw!). I sometimes wonder how this guy's mind works...I mean, first of all, his plot is incredibly complicated, on top of that, its situational comedy to the very best (forget those stupid sitcoms after reading this...at least I have)
Read this one and expand your mind! And the ending of this book is...well, MINDBLOWING!
Hugo Rune... an extraordiary man.......2001-05-11
I read this book once and laughed out loud. I read this book twice and had a giggly fit. I lent it to my Grandma and she didn't give it back.
Robert Rankin is a master wordsman and his books never fail to deliver. The Book of Ultimate Truths is mentioned in other books of his, and Hugo Rune is in every book. This is truly wonderful - the extracts from TBOUT are really clever and makes me wish that I'd realised that first. An extremely funny book (in case you hadn't gotten the message by now) that EVERYONE should read.
The secret life of the small screw.......2000-11-05
This is Robert Rankin's eighth novel, the first of a new series. It introduces some endearing characters: the wild-haired seventeen-year-old Cornelius Murphy, and his dwarf-like companion Tuppe.
A typical Rankin plot: Cornelius and Tuppe are on an epic quest to retrieve the suppressed chapters of The Book of Ultimate Truths, and to keep them out of evil hands. Hugo Rune, the author of the book in the book, appeared in earlier Rankin novels, but now his outlandish ideas get the full attention they deserve: about the secret life of Gandhi and H.G. Wells, about the strange behavior of biros and small scews, stories that make you laugh aloud.
This was the first book I read from Robert Rankin, and at times I wondered if this guy needed to see a doctor. I read it again recently, after having read all his other books, and I found out that I had missed a lot of jokes during the first reading. The more you read these books, the better they get.
Hilariously wierd.......1998-12-17
References to Douglas Adams aside (no, it's nothing like the Hitchhiker's Guide), this book is absolutely hilarious. It's one of the few books I've ever read that's been able to make me laugh out loud so often. Rankin's bizarre and somewhat halucinatory style is guaranteed to catch you off guard. The endorsements on the back include Terry Pratchett saying that Rankin is one of the few authors that can consistently make him laugh. What better reason do you need?

This book is incredible.......2003-11-03
I have read many metaphysical books, Deepak Chopra, Neal Donald Walsch, Marriane Williamson etc. but never has the concept of who we are, what we are, and the meaning of life been so easily explained. This book is magnificient in the way it is written. It is clear and easy to read. It takes a grand sweep through the world of spirituality, humanism and the cosmos from atoms to avatars. I loved the anecdotes and stories used to illustrate the points being discussed. The stories about the Indian guru, Babaji, the photos of sacred places, the authors travels and personal experiences in healing and miracles etc were very interesting has and made me want to find out more about these amazing men.
There is also a separate section of practical self alanysis and exercises that guide you over several weeks to self awareness.
The thing that I loved most is the entertaining way a diffficult and very sweeping subject is covered and made understandable to me, a novice in the subject but eager to learn more.
I finally see the connection between quantum physics and vedic teachings - I never thought I would be interested in that. I was fascinated.
There is a section on current world affairs, corporate responsibility and even on diet, as well as ecology that is so revealing, I have never seen the world explained in this way.
The author has in incredibly broad range of interests that he is able to knit together intelligently in an almost cosmic way to make a whole out of the many parts. It is really making sense of the uiverse, the underlying God- force behind the universe, and our place as human beings in the scope of things.
I will never look at politics and people and especially myself in the same way again.
It is as if a cloud has lifted and take away the confusion of our frantic world and mow a ray of light has finally broken through!
The cover of the book says "This book changes lives".
It has mine. I will see the world differently now and with more compassion, understanding and love than ever before.
Thank you for this book, the world needs it.

Book Description
Ultimate Fitness is Gina Kolata's compelling journey into the world of American physical fitness over the past thirty years. It is a funny, eye-opening, brow-sweating investigation into fads, fiction, and the science and hucksterism of fitness training. From the early days of jogging, championed by Jim Fixx-who later died of a heart attack-to stretching, cycling, aerobics, and spinning, Kolata questions such popular notions as the 'fat burning zone,' 'spot reducing,' the effects of food on performance, how much exercise helps build fitness, and the difference between exercise to help the heart and exercise to change the body. She explains the science of physical fitness and the objective evidence behind commonly accepted prescriptions. Along the way she profiles researchers and mavericks who have challenged conventional wisdom, marketed their inventions, and sometimes bucked criticism only to back down from their original claims. Ultimate Fitness spotlights the machines and machinations of the fitness industry, exposes the charlatans and gurus, and cuts through the marketing and hype not only to assess what is healthy, but also to understand what our obsession with staying healthy says about American culture today.
Download Description
In Ultimate Fitness: The Quest for Truth About Exercise and Health, Gina Kolata, science reporter for The New York Times, takes a fascinating journey into the fads, fictions, and genuine innovations that have defined the world of physical fitness. From weight lifting for men and women in the early days, to jogging in the 1970s, cycling in the 1980s, aerobics in the 1990s, and now Spinning, Kolata explains the science of conditioning and the objective evidence behind commonly accepted prescriptions. Kolata profiles those who successfully challenged conventional wisdom and marketed their inventions, and some who resisted initial criticism only to back down from their claims. With lively sketches of many of the mavericks who have influenced the industry over the years--from Bernarr MacFadden and his controversial contests "for the best and most perfectly formed woman" in the early twentieth century, to Jack LaLanne, who, at the age of eighty-seven, still lifts weights for an hour every morning, to Johnny G, the champion of Spinning--Kolata presents an eye-opening view of the inside workings of a multimillion-dollar business. Lively and engaging, Ultimate Fitness spotlights the machines and machinations, and cuts through the marketing and hype not only to assess what is healthy, but also to help us understand what our obsession with fitness says about American culture today.
Customer Reviews:
Fads and Myths.......2007-08-16
Author Kolata scrutinize the fads, myths, and actual innovations that have built-up in the world of physical fitness, based on her interviews and research, along with her own experiences as a fitness enthusiast.
Like watching a train wreck..........2007-07-28
I can't believe I actually finished this book. I suppose it was like watching a train wreck: I had to see how it came out.
Unfortunately, it didn't really come out all that well. The conclusions, such as they are, are in a short "epilogue" that doesn't actually present all that much useful information.
Another flaw is the lack of distinction between conditioning for athletes and conditioning for non-athletes. Other writers make this distinction, and it makes their work more valuable. Without this distinction, all of the conclusions are called into question.
Yes, the author goes to scientific sources to debunk a lot of exercise myths. That part is good. But then she leaps to conclusions about exercise that are just the unsubstantiated opinions of researchers doing work in the field - but without any actual studies to back them up.
Along the way, we're treated to more than we ever wanted to know about the author's own fitness obsession, or, if you will, exercise addiction. She's currently hooked on spinning, and reading about spinning is about as exciting as actually sitting on an exercise bike. Maybe.
The book is quite episodic: it reads like several magazine articles that are not stitched together all that well. The actual information content is quite low, and, frankly, I'm not sure I accept all of the author's conclusions, meager as they are.
As another reviewer mentioned, this book might well give people another excuse to avoid exercise. We've already got enough of those, thank you.
Reporter turns a good article into tedious book.......2006-12-17
This book contains about 25 pages of interesting information, most of which you have probably heard before, about how various forms of exercise can reduce weight and improve health, fitness and mood. The other 90% of the book is a pointless and boring melange of personal recollections and anecdotes about people you have never heard of and would never care to meet. The author's "spinning" fetish is especially wearisome. Unfortunately the 25 pages of interesting information is scattered throughout this tedious tome, so the rate of information transfer is about 10% of what one would reasonably expect from a good nonfiction book. The author is a journalist and should stick to writing articles that can be purged of their fluff by a good editor.
At least the author isn't trying to sell you anything..........2005-07-20
It is really sad that most people get their fitness knowledge from ads and product brochures. This lack of unbiased information has led to all kinds of myths and misunderstandings about excercise and diet.
In the first chapter, Kolata asks some good questions - can you lose weight just by walking? Do any of those gadgets work? How well are studies about excercise an health run?
All great starts to a book that answers those and similar questions. The author, in this half reference/half fitness biography, only answers some of them. And it turns out that the number one answer is that Spinning is the best excercise.
Ok, maybe that isn't entirely fair, but I personally detest spinning. Running, on the other hand, is a better fit for my life style and interests. My point is that Kolata doesn't really leave any room in her recommendation for personal preference.
The most important myth busted is the whole "train between 60% and 80% of your max heart rate to lose the most weight" You can see those programs on treadmills and steppers -- you know, the settings you could sleep through? All due to a misunderstanding of the basic math of maximizing returns. While all excercise is good, I'm telling you, working out at sleeping pace is not going to cause you to lose weight faster.
As the author is a science writer for the New York Times, the book does have the feel of more of a collection of articles than a cohesive look at fitness as a whole. However, this collection approach does is not a major weakness.
I still recommend this read because so few books cover these topics in such a critical manner. I leave it to the reader to decide how to interpret the findings.
Great Lockeroom Reading..........2004-10-02
Gina Kolata's recent book "Ultimate Fitness" was was my reading material for a number of weeks while I warmed up on a stationary bike at the gym this past winter. I have long read the author's columns on science, health and fitness in the pages of the New York Times and found her to be an interesting, questioning writer and her columns are often thought provoking. In "Ultimate Fitness" she attempts to answer many of the questions that the average reader has about the pursuit of fitness? How much exercise do we need to be healthy? Many of us have witnessed people year after year in the gym who seem to make little progress. Are there people who simply don't get fit? Those of us who have spent time coaching and who have analytical minds have long questioned the oft-repeated formula (220 minus the exercisers age) used to determine maximum heart rate and exercise zones, where did it come from and does it make any sense? What special nutritional needs to athletes have and are expensive supplements of any use? What are the effects of exercise on body fat and cholesterol? What should one look for in a trainer? Finally, why do we feel good after exercising? These are all questions that Kolata sets out to answer. She uses her own pursuit of fitness through the popular stationary bicycle exercise Spinning as a narrative thread throughout the book. This device helps to give the text a more human quality than other books on fitness. Kolata also gives us sketches of men like the promoter Bernarr Mcfadden, running guru Dr. Kenneth Cooper, researcher Dr. David Costill and bodybuilder Jack LaLane, all of whom have contributed to the preoccupation with fitness that has swept much of America over the past several decades. It's a readable and interesting book that provides thoughtful answers to questions that we all have about exercise and health.
