Book Description

While other books are looking to the Web and people with disabilities to focus attention on accessibility issues, Accessibility for Everybody: Understanding the Section 508 Accessibility Requirements looks that whole picture -- accessibility for everyone in every environment. The U.S. government quickly realized that they have a wealth of older applications that will never appear on the Internet, but require some type of remedial upgrade to make them more accessible. The Section 508 rules don't just touch on the Internet, they provide rules about every aspect of computer use. Issues such as how to build accessible furniture or adding accessibility features to the phone system cannot be addressed within the scope of this book, but the book will touch on every issue the average Windows developer is going to want to know about. Eventually, the vast majority of developers will recognize the need to add accessibility as one of the design goals for any application. However, one of the issues hindering that goal is the language used to convey the legal requirements for accessibility. This book seeks to remove the artificial hurdles presented by the language of the law by presenting the information in plain English. In short, this book about accessibility will make the Section 508 requirements more accessible to the average developer. Web sites, programming examples, sources of additional information, and other aids to make the job easier are included.

      Book Description

Throws light on significant aspects of the Company's history. INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MARITIME HISTORY The English East India Company was one of the most powerful commercial companies ever to have existed. It laid the foundations of the British Empire in South Asia and thus lies at the very heart of the interlinked histories of Britain and Asia. This first multi-disciplinary history of the Company to be published commemorates the four-hundredth anniversary of the founding of this unique and extraordinary institution. Historians of art, culture, cartography, empire, politics, the sea, and trade, explore the origins, operation, and influence of the Company as an organisation that remained firmly engaged in maritime commercial activity in many different spheres, even as it acted as a powerful agent of territorial expansion on the Indian subcontinent. H.V. BOWEN is senior lecturer in economic and social history at the University of Leicester; NIGEL RIGBY and MARGARETTE LINCOLN work in the research department of the National Maritime Museum, London.

          Book Description

For more than thirty years a symbiosis has developed between the 'new institutionalists' and business historians, which stems from synergies in the interests of both groups. The central questions posed by Coase and Williamson, of why firms exist and grow, have found echoes in the historical work of Chandler on the forces leading to the rise of big business first in the United States and then in Europe. Conversely Williamson used Chandler's historical evidence to give foundation to his development of transaction cost economics.

The papers in this volume demonstrate that it can be fruitful to apply institutional theory to business history. In addition, the volume shows that the wider study of the institutional environment is inseparable from the study of business. It is clear, however, that although 'institutionalism' in business history has a long pedigree, many areas of research and potential interaction with theory remain to be explored. The extent to which this will occur inevitably depends upon thedegree to which the interests of theoreticians serve the needs of historians and vice versa.

The contributions to this volume, by moving beyond the analysis of the internal organisation of firms to interrelationships within and between institutions, moves the debate forward and points to the potential for new theoretical developments which would facilitate the study of networks moving them from the periphery of institutional theory to the core a development which would significantly help business historians build conceptual models to make sense of the complexities of the past.

            Book Description

This text applies organization theory to British business and illuminates its historical and contemporary organizational patterns. The text is unique in that it systematically combines organization theory with the results of historical and social-scientific research, to produce an authoritative account of contemporary organizational change. The argument is amply illustrated by the presentation and discussion of highly topical case studies of big business strategy. Professor Ackroyd argues that the orthodox (contingency) approach to organizational structure does not provide an adequate analysis of current structural changes in the British economy. He puts forward an alternative perspective on organizational structures which draws on both classical ideas (particularly those of Weber) and some recent theory, to produce an account of the typical historical patterns of both large and small UK organizations and to illuminate their contemporary transformations. Using established social-scientific research, Professor Ackroyd shows that British organizations are adopting some highly distinctive new organizational forms and patterns of inter-firm relationships. This analysis is then used as the basis for a presentation and critique of much of the abundant writing on contemporary organizational change, including sophisticated theories such as institutional theory, regulationist theory and ideas on the effects of globalization. Finally, Professor Ackroyd shows that much organizational change today has clear policy implications for government.

                                      Book Description

Desertification is land degradation due to climatic and anthropogenic causes where land includes soil, water and the biological productive capacity. This has become a major environmental, economic and political issue in Mediterranean countries. In order to address the problem in the European countries of the Mediterranean, the European Commission established a number of major research projects under its DGXII Environment and Climate Programme MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use). This book describes the results from the first phase of the project, dealing with local physical, socio-economic and political controls on desertification. In particular the book concentrates on the models developed, calibrated and validated, the field investigations into biological, hydrological and erosional processes at the seven main sites, and provides an introduction to the problems associated with global warming in the Mediterranean context. GIS and remote sensing are an integral part of the investigation and the results are described and discussed in detail.

The 21 chapters are essentially a report of the first MEDALUS research project. There are 4 good chapters presenting the regional background and overview of the project, followed by 6 detailed in-depth reports of the sites investigated in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece, whereas those researched in France are not included. Eight chapters deal with special topics of the program, including the Slope Catena Model, remote sensing applications and effect of rock fragments. A valuable but uneven effort.

                                          Description:
Desertification can be effectively managed only through a thorough understanding of its principal ecological, socio-cultural, and economic driving forces. This has stimulated research that pays specific attention to the social causes and consequences of land use change and land degradation. Improving the management of complex environmental problems through land use planning has resulted in policy makers becoming increasingly aware of the need to place emphasis upon problem analysis. This has involved placing greater institutional value upon widening the decision-making community to include actors not normally considered as 'experts' but who possess equally valid and valuable knowledge and perspectives of the realities of the problems affecting their region. Active involvement of the wider stakeholder community can play a crucial function in better consideration of problems by identifying different stakeholder perspectives, provide an active learning arena for all those involved, and provide an interactive basis necessary for generating joined-up thinking. Scenario construction is one such approach that can be used to actively engage stakeholders. This paper will describe the theory surrounding interactive stakeholder involvement, reflecting upon a two-part workshop process for undertaking a participatory scenario construction process in the Northern Mediterranean region. The case study will be used to illustrate the opportunities such interactive approaches can provide for communities having to deal with complex issues surrounding their region. The focus is upon creating greater awareness of the value and need for more fundamental institutional recognition in support of greater actor involvement and interactive dialogue in problem definition, planning and decision-making.

                                            Book Description

Despite the large quantity of phenomenological information concerning the bulk properties of nematic phase liquid crystals, little is understood about the origin of the surface energy, particularly the surface, interfacial, and anchoring properties of liquid crystals that affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. Self-contained and unique, Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals provides an account of new and established results spanning three decades of research into the problems of anchoring energy and adsorption phenomena in liquid crystals. The book contains a detailed discussion of the origin and possible sources of anchoring energy in nematic liquid crystals, emphasizing the dielectric contribution to the anchoring energy in particular. Beginning with fundamental surface and anchoring properties of liquid crystals and the definition of the nematic phase, the authors explain how selective ion adsorption, dielectric energy density, thickness dependence, and bias voltage dependence influence the uniform alignment of liquid crystals and affect the performance of liquid crystal devices. They also discuss fundamental equations regulating the adsorption phenomenon and the dynamic aspects of ion adsorption phenomenon in liquid crystalline systems. Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals serves as an excellent source of reference for graduates and researchers working in liquid crystals, complex fluids, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, chemical engineering, and electronic engineering, as well as providing a useful general introduction to and background information on the nematic liquid crystal phase.

Some men are born fathers, while others have fatherhood thrust upon them. The protagonist of John O'Farrell's The Best a Man Can Get belongs indisputably in the latter category. When his first daughter is born, Michael Adams imagines her as the warden of a prison that will permanently deprive him of his youth and freedom. Terrified by his new responsibilities, he regularly escapes to a bachelor pad across the Thames, pretending to be at work. Another child arrives--and with still another on the way, it is only a matter of time before Michael's wife discovers his double life. At that point, he must make a choice between his family and his hedonistic haven.

By turns hilarious and touching, O'Farrell's book delves deeply into the anxieties of modern parenting. Yet the novel is not without empathy for the 21st-century father. After all, it's easy to imagine the lure of a child-proof hideaway, insulated from sleepless nights and dirty diapers. At the same time, Adams often wonders whether "just being tucked up warm and cosy" is really "the best a man can get." With its charming prose and truant protagonist, this first novel is sure to win over even the most reluctant parent. --Greg Bensinger

A hilarious and touching debut novel–in the seriocomic Nick Hornby tradition–that demonstrates why marriage, fatherhood, and maturity don’t always arrive on a synchronized schedule.

Michael Adams is a composer of advertising jingles who shares a flat with three other men in their late twenties. Days are spent lying in bed, playing computer and musical trivia games, and occasionally doing a spot of work. And, when he feels like it, he crosses the river and goes back to his unsuspecting wife and children.

For Michael is living a double life. He escapes from the exhausting misery of babies by telling his wife he has to pull an all-nighter at work or travel away on business. And while she is valiantly coping on her own, he is just a few miles away in his male paradise, doing all the stupid, pointless, gloriously enjoyable stuff that most men with small children can only dream about. He thinks he can lead this double life indefinitely, until the inevitable slip exposes him and threatens to blow his marriage to kingdom come.

The Best a Man Can Get is a darkly comic confessional that peers deeply (and amusingly) into the soul of the contemporary male, divided between the pull of family and the dream of escape. Graced by a flawless eye for detail and impeccable timing, it offers a generous allotment of both belly laughs and shocks of recognition for men and women alike.

John O’Farrell has finally given readers the sparkling and candid novel that fatherhood needs and deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked, outrageous, ruthless, and VERY funny with it .......2007-04-06

Michael Adams is living a double life. Under the pretense of work, while actually doing very little work, he shares a flat with three other men so that he can take time off from his family.

The book plays upon parenthood's less proud moments but, let's face it, haven't all parents wished for some time off at some point?

Although far-fetched, the story works, thanks to O'Farrell's amazing insight and perfectly timed shots of humour.

Michael is not likeable, but many readers be able to identify with him - I could see some of the worst parts of me in him and it's quite liberating to be able to laugh about them. Yes, I was enraged at times, but mainly because he's getting away with it!

The book begs the question "What if I could do it too?" and I don't even want to think about the honest answers to that one!

4 out of 5 stars Not the Best O'Farrell Fiction Novel a Man or Woman Can Get But it is Still Very Good!.......2007-01-08

I actually recently read the second and third fiction novels by O'Farrell before finding this one. They are sensational hilarious reads, especially his masterpiece This is Your Life. I didn't quite think this debut novel reached the really extremely high benchmark those books achieved, but then again I have not had kids yet and if so I think the jokes inside would have been even funnier.

O'Farrell's fiction novels are hilarious looks at life, the main characters have clever one liner thoughts and the reader follows a moral awakening journey through the eyes of the main character. I found this book actually quite interesting when compared to his third novel May Contain Nuts whose main character is the complete opposite ie a woman who is a cotton wool overprotective parent.

In The best a Man Can Get, Michael Adams was content in his relationship with his witty and beautiful wife who suddenly had fatherhood thrust upon him before he was ready. His wife seems to be extremely competent at being a parent while he knows for sure that he is not and he finds the whole situation just a bit hard to bare. So he decides the best solution for all is to pretend he has to work late or that he is on business trips up north when he really is living in a share house pretending to be a single guy on the other side of London.

Like with all O'Farrell novels the outcome is fairly predictable, even the twist in this one you'll work out long before its divulged but the fun, as it always is with O'Farrell's novels, is in getting there. Read them all!

I feel sad that I have discovered John so late in my life. This book will figure among my Top 5 humorous novel lists. John weaves a tale which slips into past and back with great ease and making the reader laugh aloud all the way. It puts on stage what we are - Lazy Parent and Spouse who does more dreaming of sharing a great life with the family but sparse action to back it up. A great and hilarious read. Please avoid any liquid intake while you are reading this book for the fear of it coming through your nose.

                                            4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly hilarious book.......2006-06-01

I didn't know what to expect from this book when I received it from a Bookcrossing meetup. My only exposure to British humor is the outrageous kind, such as Monty Python and Douglas Adams. This one was more down to earth and realistic which sometimes makes the best type of humor.

At times I found myself laughing out loud. The ending was very Hollywood-esque - you know everything comes out right in the end. However, it was still a great, funny book that I recommend highly.
