Book Description
*******Text Available 6/25/2004!********** Steven Chapra’s new text, Applied Numerical Methods with MATLAB for Engineers and Scientists, is written for engineers and scientists who want to learn numerical problem solving. Aimed at numerical methods users rather than developers, the text employs problems rather than mathematics to motivate readers. Guided by Chapra’s proven student-oriented pedagogy, including chapter objectives, worked examples, and student-friendly problems, the reader builds a strong working knowledge of numerical problem solving while moving progressively through the text.
Customer Reviews:
Wasn't the book described.......2006-01-18
The description given about the book did not correspond with the book I received. The book I received was not a hardcover nor was it the 550 pages as described. It was the paperback version that contained 384 pages. However, regardless of being paperback rather than hardcover, it was still the same book I needed. I ordered it on thursday, and received it on monday. The shipping was extremely fast and I'm very happy about it, because I needed this book ASAP to do my studies. And the price of the book couldn't be beat, I practically saved 60 bucks for a new book.
not for beginners.......2005-03-07
I had to buy this book for my class. This book doesn't instruct how to input equations. Not enough example answer codes for each problem. Less visual and tedious to follow all words.
Great Book.......2005-01-16
This is a well-written book that provides a nice, concise introduction to numerical methods. As with other books by this author, it is very student friendly and should be particularly useful for people, like myself, who use it for self-study. I was not familiar with MATLAB prior to using the book. This book made it relatively easy for me to pick up the fundamentals and then implement numerical solutions. As a computer scientist, I also liked the emphasis placed on the development of M-files. My only criticism is that I wish the book covered more material. I hope that the author expands it in future editions.

Book Description
This helpful manual assists instructors that teach a course using the case method. It helps instructors explore what it means to teach by discussion leadership. It has a focus on higher education with a professional orientation. It also helps instructors consider a range of possible teaching materials, but emphasizes case studies. The focus is on learning, not teaching.

Socrates' Muse: Reflections on Effective Case Discussion.......2003-11-11
Prof. Robert F. Bruner's ideas on teaching are excellent, and more importantly, they work! (My own course ratings improved dramatically when I followed his advice under pacing and preparation.)
He has written a book for teachers who care about student learning . It's great for ideas on self-improvement. I've given it as a gift to faculty who are interested in making the switch to case teaching. It also has a really good section on how to watch other faculty teach.

Book Description
A materialist account of Wilde's career as a writer, Oscar Wilde's Profession contests three widely held assumptions about his success: that there is a clear distinction between his life as a journalist and his artistic celebrity; that he was an aesthetic 'purist' in his attitude towards his own books; and that his career was driven by an oppositional sexual or nationalist politics. The authors bring together evidence from the publishing trade, from Wilde's contracts and correspondence with publishers, and from documentation about his earnings (particularly the plays) to show that he always worked for money, but that he achieved far less financial success than is usually thought. Far from subverting the nascent consumerism of his time, he was thoroughly immersed in its values--in the commodification of culture in which books became product. At the same time, Oscar Wilde's Profession provides a uniquely detailed account of Wilde's processes of composition, springing from the re-examination of his writing practice currently being undertaken in the Oxford English Texts edition of his complete work: it surveys his writing practices across the whole of the oeuvre, and radically reinterprets the significance of his revision and 'plagiarism'.

Book Description
Why, for many centuries, was the wheel abandoned in the Middle East in favor of the camel as a means of transport? This richly illustrated study explains this anomaly. Drawing on archaeology, art, technology, anthropology, linguistics, and camel husbandry, Bulliet explores the implications for the region's economic and social development during the Middle Ages and into modern times.
Customer Reviews:
tour de force.......2000-06-20
Richard Bulliet's, Camel and the Wheel, is a seminal example of social history from the perspective of an animal. In the vein of the French Annales school of Marc Bloch and Ladurie, Bulliet traces the origin of the camel in North America (!), tracks how it got to the Middle East, how it came to be the favourite beast of the Arabs and how it helped to facilitate the lightening Muslim conquests in the 7th century that brought all of North Africa, Spain, the Levant, Iran, and Sind under Muslim control by 711 C.E. Bulliet lays out some surprising discoveries in the realm of camel saddles and explains why they carry the key to the Arab conquests. Significantly, Bulliet posits a brilliant counter-intuitive theory for the disappearance of the wheel from the Middle East for the better part of a millenium--a theory that is no longer even questioned. Readers will find intriguing and superbly documented responses to some of these crucial issues. A veritable historical "who-dunnit", Camel and the Wheel is an entertaining and enlightening read!

Book Description
Geocomputation A Primer edited by Paul A Longley Sue M Brooks Rachael McDonnell School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol, UK and Bill Macmillan School of Geography, University of Oxford, UK This book encompasses all that is new in geocomputation. It is also a primer - that is, a book which sets out the foundations and scope of this important emergent area from the same contemporary perspective. The catalyst to the emergence of geocomputation is the new and creative application of computers to devise and depict digital representations of the Earth's surface. The environment for geocomputation is provided by geographical information systems (GIS), yet geocomputation is much more than GIS. Geocomputation is a blend of research-led applications which emphasise process over form, dynamics over statics, and interaction over passive response. This book presents a timely blend of current research and practice, written by the leading figures in the field. It provides insights to a new and rapidly developing area, and identifies the key foundations to future developments. It should be read by all who seek to use geocomputational methods for solving real world problems.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to a new field.......2000-04-16
What is geocomputation ? To some, a revolutionary way of dealing with spatial data. To others, a collection of known tools under a new brand name. In any case, all of those which are interested in geographical information systems (GIS) will benefit enormously from reading this book, which provides a comprehensive review of this new field. All articles are interesting, but especially noteworthy is Couclelis's state-of-the-art review, with a number of interesting points about the notion of "geocomputation". Important contributions also come from Oppenshaw (he reviews his GAM and GAM/K algorithms), Anselin (exploratory data analysis), Batty (visualisation) and Burrough (dynamical modelling). In short, if you want to know what "geocomputation" is about, this is the place to start.

Book Description
Geocomputation is essentially the follow-on revolution from Geographic Information Science and is expected to gather speed and momentum in the first decade of the 21st century. It comes into use once a GIS database has been set up, with a digital data library, and expanded and linked to a global geographical two or three dimensional co-ordinate system. It exploits developments in IT and new data gathering and earth observing technologies, and takes the notion of GIS beyond data and towards its analysis, modelling, and use in problem solving. This book provides pointers on how to harness these technologies in tandem and in the context of multiple different subjects and problem areas. It seeks to establish the principles and set the foundations for subsequent growth. L

Book Description
Geographic Information Systems are computer-based systems for geographic analysis. They have been developed over the past twenty five years and are now widely used. A recent research direction has been the development of geocomputation , representing computer-based geographical analysis beyond the traditional bounds of GIS. In geocomputation, the computer is the research environment itself, not merely a tool. A key to geocomputation it that highly powered computing can be used with sufficient data to avaid traditional parametric approaches altogether. The term geocomputation includes the use of computer-based techniques such as artificial neural networks, genetic programming and fuzzy logic, but in a geographical context. This new book in the prestigious Innovations in GIS series, presents the latest research in geocomputational techniques as presented in the GIS UK Annual Conference.

Book Description
Massive stars are distributed all over the upper part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram according to their subsequent phases of stellar evolution from main sequence to supernova. Massive stars may either be single or they may be a component of a close binary. The observed single star/binary frequency is known only in a small part of the Galaxy. Whether this holds for the whole galaxy or for the whole cosmos is questionable and needs many more high quality observations. Massive star evolution depends critically on mass loss by stellar wind and this stellar wind mass loss may change dramatically when stars evolve from one phase to another. We start the book with a critical discussion of observations of the different types of massive stars, observations that are of fundamental importance in relation to stellar evolution, with special emphasis on mass loss by stellar wind. We update our knowledge of the physics that models the structure and evolution of massive single stars and we present new calculations. The conclusions resulting from a comparison between these calculations and observations are then used to study the evolution of massive binaries. This book provides our current knowledge of a great variety of massive binaries, and hence of a great variety of evolutionary phases. A large number of case studies illustrates the existence of these phases. Finally, we present the results of massive star population number synthesis, including the effect of binaries. The results indicate that neglecting them leads to a conclusion which may be far from reality. This book is written for researchers in massive star evolution. We hope that, after reading this book, university-level astrophysics students will become fascinated by the exciting world of the `Brightest Binaries'.

Jennifer Bell used to travel the planet with her boyfriend, fighting the good fight for mother Earth. But after the breakup (not a good fight), Jen moved back to London to work for another mother: her own. Harriet Bell founded Green Futures, a consulting firm, after splitting up with Jen’s big-shot father, who runs a rival (and Harriet thinks corrupt) company. But Harriet can’t expose his crimes without proof. And she wants Jen to find some.
Since Jen hasn’t seen her dad in more than fifteen years, it’s a snap to infiltrate his company . . . under an assumed name, of course. Soon she’s worming her way into the good graces of the company’s managers to find evidence of wrongdoing. What she discovers is that her father’s world is a whole lot different from her own–filled with Palm Pilots, MBAs, martini lunches, designer suits, and Daniel Peterson, a guy who puts the gorge in gorgeous. Suddenly Jen is torn between Birkenstocks and Jimmy Choos, tree-hugging and air-kissing. Could it be that her Big Bad Dad isn’t the monster her mom made him out to be? Or is Jen simply being seduced by the power of hard deals, hot nights, and wads of cash? Only time will tell–preferably from a Cartier watch on the wrist of Daniel Peterson. . . .

Among the more enjoyable and intelligent chick-lit out there.......2006-06-18
Since I used to live in London, I buy any chick-lit that's based there, whether I think it looks interesting or not. This book stuck out at me since it's rare to see a chick-lit book that explores mildly-intellectual things (business ethics for example) while still telling a single-girl-coming-into-her-own story.
The premise of the book is that Jen's mother wants her to infiltrate her estranged father's company to find evidence that he is linked to some illegal business dealings. Jen's parents divorced nastily fifteen years before, and her mother went on to start an "ethical" business consultancy to compete with her father's "big business" company. Jen joins the company, and quickly right becomes wrong, left becomes right, the good guy becomes the bad guy.
With a neat and tidy little twist at the end, the book is clever and tells a good story. It drags on in parts, and the dialogue isn't the greatest (the "real life" conversation between Jen and her boyfriend ordering takeout made me want to scream) but I definitely think it's a great escapist chick-lit book, ranking up there with Sophie Kinsella and Helen Fielding.

This book was truly enjoyable. This book is the 2nd I've read written by her. I enjoyed it and kept wanting to read more!
Took a while to get into it but glad I stuck with it.......2006-05-07
I had a really time getting interested in this book. I wasn't a big fan of the character, Harriet (Jen's mom), and wasn't looking forward to reading too much more about her and her interactions with Jen. Luckily Harriet was not in all that many scenes in the book.
Once I got going with the book I enjoyed it. I found most all the characters likeable. I didn't necessarily feel like I got to Jen all that much but there was enough to work with and relate to.
The book picked up and I sat down and read straight through the last 80 pages. I would recommend it.
Found it hard to get through.......2006-04-19
To me, this book was straight chick lit, and poor chick lit at that. The writing was so full of cliches and stilted language and the "intrigue" was not interesting. In fact I am having trouble finishing it even though it's a fast read.
A witty quick read.......2006-04-17
This "chick lit" book is better then most - an intelligent heroine does more then just worry about her love life. There is a bit of mystery to it as well. It is not often you read books about MBA students - as an MBA grad myself, it was great!
