Book Description
C++ Programming: From Problem Analysis to Program Design, Third Edition is the ground-breaking, definitive text for the CS1 course. Best-selling author D.S. Malik employs a student-focused approach, using complete programming examples to teach introductory programming concepts. This third edition has been enhanced to further demonstrate the use of OOD methodology, to introduce sorting algorithms (bubble sort and insertion sort), and to present additional material on abstract classes. In addition, the exercise sets at the end of each chapter have been expanded, and now contain several calculus and engineering-related exercises. Finally, all programs have been written, compiled, and quality-assurance tested with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET, available as an optional compiler with this text.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and rigorous. .......2007-09-17
This book presents C++ programming in a fairly rigorous fashion. Many of the examples are somewhat long, however, this is what happens when you need to move beyond simple stuff like finding the maximum number in an array, counting a series of numbers with a loop, printing a triangle of asterisks, and so on. Such problems are examined in this book but the author doesn't stop there. This is one of the few books that actually demonstrates the kind of programming skills that the "real world" demands.
excellent c++ introduction.......2007-07-15
I took an introductory c++ class a few years ago and the textbook for that class was much more difficult to follow. Malik does a great job going over things so that difficult concepts are easily understood. If you are a beginner you may have a hard time understanding some of the concepts in this book. However, learning to program takes effort to learn well and the lengthy code examples in this book are an excellent way to see overall programs instead of just snippets. Some reviewers complain about the math in the book. There is actually very little and what there is fairly basic algebra. You can skip through most of the math problems and be fine. A good use of color as well.
A good instructional and good reference book.......2007-05-21
I have just completed my order with Amazon.com for a copy of this book, so I don't have the book yet. Why the decision to purchase ? Well, I read the reviews here and decided to download the source codes from the author's website and see what the fuzzes are all about. I opened up my Ultra Studio and start going over the codes. Holly smoke, these stuffs can saved you hours of programming, the author's got items on stacks, queues, linked list, etc. I read some sample writing from the website, and the writings do seem more accadamical than an easy read on a Sunday afternoon. For me, this is fine, as I am used to this type of writings.
Overall, seem like a safe purchase.
New students beware; programmers rejoice.......2007-03-30
If you're new to programming, this book may be too long-winded for you. I certainly think anyone who reads through the text and spends time on the examples could manage to learn the language, but for the absolute beginner, I would suggest something shorter with simpler examples. Each section is covered in copious detail and I would imagine many new students would not be interested in reading it all.
If you've programmed before, I highly recommend this book. It covers all the basics of the C++ language and many intermediate topics. Breezing through certain sections while looking through examples and their output, you can quickly pick up on the differences in C++ and other programming languages; however, if you come across something that doesn't seem familiar, the incredible detail provided in this book can certainly clear it up. The book also provides useful appendixes for reference as well as an index.
Not for a beginner.......2006-07-05
This book have been nothing but confusion in my C++ classes. I've spoken to students in two C++ classes. Everyone has hated this book, so this is not just my opinion. The examples are way to long. For some of his examples he uses palindrome numbers, Fibonacii numbers. The author may be very smart, but this is not the place to show off. Get another book that breaks things down to simple examples. If you're in a class, get Tony Gaddis, "Starting out with C++" much clearer,he writes so the student can understand and learn. This book will only confuse the beginner.
Book Description
This text is ideal for a first course in Computer Science using the C# programming language.
Customer Reviews:
Inaccurate, simplistic, incomplete, not up-to-date.......2007-04-12
What a mess. I cannot express how disappointed I was in this book.
Firstly the book is oversimplifies concepts to the point where the author actually starts to become inaccurate about the precise nature of certain constructs and processes.
Secondly the book is out of touch with more modern design and development methods such as agile development techniques, test based coding etc. It also fails to deliver on its title with almost no detail on problem analysis and no real world practical program design.
Shame on colleges that use this book in their curriculum, this book has almost no application to real world application development
Excellent Book for First-Time Coders.......2006-12-29
This book was the prescribed textbook for the programming subject which I completed this year. C# is my first programming language, so I will be reviewing this book from the perspective of someone who does not know any programming languages.
I believe it was an excellent introduction to writing code. I have taken out many other books on C# which were nowhere near as a helpful as Doyle's book. The book does a really good job explaining how the language works and how code can be structured. It tended to go a little bit deeper with its explanations than many books, thus fostering a deeper understanding of how everything fits together. However, it does not go so deep as to completely baffle or confuse the beginner.
Another really good aspect of this book is that, at the end of nearly every chapter, a case study is presented and worked through. I found these case studies invaluable in that they demonstrated how a programmer should break down and analyse a problem and how to work through the problem, right through to writing the code. This is so much more helpful than the isolated code snippets that most text books run through. What good is knowing how to write a "for" loop if you have no idea how it can be applied in a real application? i.e. how it can be used as a tool to achieve a desired functionality.
This book is not so good if your focus will be on learning about graphical applications. It does provide a pretty good introduction into the visual stuff, but that's all it really is (a cursory introduction).
Having said that, I believe that people learning how to write code should not even be contemplating GUI applications until they have a good, solid understanding of types and object oriented programming. It is that which this book will provide.
Weak, but usable for the most part.......2005-07-27
If you are looking for a textbook for a beginning class in C# where you do not expect the students to write large programs, then this one will satisfy your needs. Nearly all of the programs are very simple, very little more than a page of text. All of the fundamental concepts such as variables, arithmetic, comparison and logical operators; control constructs such as if-then, switch and the different types of loops. The basics of Windows form programming with the standard GUI control objects and event handling are also introduced. Object-oriented concepts such as encapsulation, inheritance and overloading are covered, with a chapter devoted to exceptions and another that introduces web pages and ASP.NET.
The problem I have with the book is that nothing is covered in depth. Even the programming exercises tend to be rather light and are often vaguely written. For example, at the end of chapter 11 (page 688), "Handling Exceptions and Stored Data", the following programming exercises are given.
4. Write a program that stores your name, address and local phone number in a text file. Surround your phone number with asterisks. Include appropriate exception-handling techniques in your solution.
5. Place the following values in a text file: 86, 97, 144, 26. To simplify the problem, the values can each be placed on separate lines. Write a C# program to retrieve the values from the text file and print the average of the values formatted with two decimal places.
In both problems, there is no mention of whether a console or form based application is to be created. In problem number 4, there is no context to the exception-handling techniques that are to be used. My assumption was that it should be a form-based application with labeled input boxes. The exception handling would then be to verify that the inputs have the appropriate structure. The level of difficulty of both problems is also much less than I would expect of a programming student near the end of the class.
If you are an experienced programmer and interested in a quick, effective overview of the C# language for self-study, then this book is a good choice. For everyone else, I consider the coverage too light to be worth using.
AVOID THIS BOOK -- Here's why..........2005-07-20
Here's why you should avoid this book:
1) This book fails to provide clear, step-by-step instructions on how to create the different applications.
* A perfect example of this can be seen (starting with) Chapter 8 -- the programming Windows Apps section. The author shows a picture of an application that you [the reader] will be creating. After showing you the picture, she [the author] then describes a few of the features that the program will have. When finished with that, she then lets you know that you should be done writting your program and that you should be all done with it. Remember, this is all done without any guidance or help from the author. NOT THE WAY TO TEACH PROGRAMMING!!
2) This book is NOT worth $75 dollars.
* The first seven chapters are strictly dedicated to teaching one how to create old MS-DOS applications.
* Only two chapters talk about the *basics* of creating MS Windows applications. (Remember, no instructions provided on how to create them here.)
3) The teaching style seems to somewhat change throughout the book.
* For example, in the beginning of the book, the author assumes that you are using MS Visual Studio to create your software applications. Later on, in the horrible Windows Development App section, the author somehow forgets this fact and then provides code samples that one needs to type in when using their favorite, *NON*-VISUAL STUDIO code editors.
Normally, I like to give books a good review. However, this is one that I honestly cannot give more than one star. If zero stars were possible, it would deserve it.

Book Description
The fiftieth anniversary of the Bretton Woods Conference served as an opportunity to reappraise the desirability of strengthening the IMF's oversight of the functioning of the international monetary system. Whatever the design of an exchange rate system and the arrangements for the provision of international liquidity, it is widely accepted that to be effective such oversight must rest on a strong analytic foundation. These two volumes present 30 analytic papers on the system as it functioned during 1987-91 and aim at conveying the flavor of those issues that commanded close attention in the Fund's research program.

Quantum computing and quantum information are two of the fastest growing and most exciting research fields in physics. The possibilities of using the non-local behavior of quantum mechanics to factor integers in random polynomial time have also added to this new interest. This book supplies a collection of problems in quantum computing and quantum information together with their detailed solutions, which will prove to be invaluable to students as well as to research workers in these fields. All the important concepts and topics such as quantum gates and quantum circuits, entanglement, teleportation, Bell states, Bell inequality, Schmidt decomposition, quantum Fourier transform, magic gate, von Neumann entropy, quantum cryptography, quantum error correction, coherent states, squeezed states, POVM measurement, beam splitter and Kerr Hamilton operator are included. The topics range in difficulty from elementary to advanced. Almost all problems are solved in detail and most of the problems are self-contained.
Customer Reviews:
This book helped me. .......2005-01-01
This text is refreshing if you want a lot of worked examples to help you through another text like, (Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, Michael A. Nielsen, Isaac L. Chuang, ISBN: 0521635039). I was excited when this text came out and had an order in before it got off the press. When I got the book I immediately found useful worked examples that helped me get past some of the problems I was having with the notation in my other books. I have had this book for several months and have worked though enough of it to give it a 5 star rating. There are many problems in the text I am not advanced enough to work yet.
I started quantum computing for a research project and taught myself most of the material I know. This text is not easy and does not start at ground zero. It had problems I could understand at my level when I purchased it, but at that point I had an idea of how gates worked and a good solid review of linear algebra to stand on. I think that the kindest book out of the dozen on my shelf to a total beginner is, (Approaching Quantum Computing, Dan C. Marinescu, Gabriela M. Marinescu , ISBN: 013145224X).
This is the only book of its kind available at the time of this review. I wish the book had more simpler examples and just a bit of an explanation for some of the solutions. Sometimes the solution is given but it still does not seem apparent to me. I wish the text was just a bit kinder.
If you are working on a research project and struggling with some of the notation or the exact details of calculation this text may be extremely useful to you, but you will need another book to explain the theory.

Sweet and Sexy.......2007-10-09
NAUGHTY LITTLE SECRET by Shelley Bradly is a short, sweet and sexy read. Yes again she has delivered and manages to give you a book that you want very much to see the two people in the story happy not just because it's romance and they should but because you honestly feel the two characters are meant for each other.
I LOVED this story. It shows that even though the ending to one relationship is not always pleasant there is someone out there possibly waiting to make their move and could possibly have a happy ending.
Shelley this book is just wonderful. You know how to deliver a read that not just makes you love the characters but you write with such emotion and I feel that through your characters.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to read a sweet but sexy story. This story will not disappoint.
Shelley great story - can't wait to read more.
Loved It!.......2007-10-01
This was an interesting story. I loved the characters. Very hot sex scenes. I wonder if all of Shelley Bradley's stuff is this good?
Five Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies!.......2007-07-18
Noah Reeves has been in love with Lauren for ten years; ten long years during which he watched her strive to make a marriage work and raise children alone while her emotionally frozen husband ignored her. Now, two years after Lauren's divorce, Noah is unable to wait any longer and so he comes up with a plan. A plan to woo and seduce Lauren and make her understand that there is a man whom she can love and rely on to hold her throughout the night; him.
Lauren Southall has secretly been in love with Noah for years. She has been unable to look at other men since her divorce; all of her fantasies revolve around Noah, her friend and her boss. Knowing that relationships cause pain and heartache, Lauren is unwilling to risk her heart again; that is, until a mysterious note and gift are left on her desk at work. After reading the note, Lauren finds herself willing to go along with the instructions, much to Noah's supposed dismay. She and Noah exchange harsh words in which Lauren lets him know that under no circumstances should he interfere with her mystery man. Noah doesn't like her request but he agrees and Lauren leaves. She has to get home and set herself up to be seduced.
NAUGHTY LITTLE SECRET was naughty all right. I still don't think I have recovered! As a boss, Noah was fair, balanced, and extremely on task with his lists and strategies. As a lover, his actions were poignant and demanding. I thought his no-holds-barred idea of winning Lauren's love highly effective; I would not have been able to resist him. Lauren could be any woman who has gone through a tough divorce and is afraid to give her heart and love again. It was in Lauren's surrender that Ms. Bradley's talent as a writer shined.
NAUGHTY LITTLE SECRET by Shelley Bradley should come with its own warning label that states, "Warning! This novel may cause heart palpitations, sweating, and tears. Ice chips and a cold shower recommended!" It was just that hot and more. Shelley Bradley takes the reader on a whirlwind of emotions throughout NAUGHTY LITTLE SECRET. After having read it I could not be more satisfied. Highly erotic and extremely tender at the same time, this book made me smile, cry, and squirm in my seat. Congrats Ms. Bradley for writing a novel that will make the readers feel the emotions of the characters. Not only feel, but also yearn to BE the characters. This one is definitely a keeper.

This One Will Kick Start Your Libido! HOT.......2007-05-24
After divorcing her inattentive workaholic husband, Lauren Southall picked up the pieces of her life and found a job working for one of her ex's best friends, Noah Reeves. For the last two years, she'd donned the career woman persona working side by side with Noah all the while wishing she could be more than just his employee. She'd seen the stream of silicone filled young lovelies he'd date then drop and knew he couldn't possibly be interested in a 36-year-old divorcee with two young children.
Noah had been in love with Lauren since the day he'd met her. For ten years he'd been eating his heart out and for the last two he'd been biding his time to come up with a plan to make her his. By day he's her best friend, great pal and boss, but by night he's Mr. Mysterious a fantasy mind-blowing sex master pleasuring her beyond her wild imaginings. Now Noah has to convince Lauren that Mr. Mysterious is after more than just mind-blowing sex, and wants her love and commitment.
*** Both Noah and Lauren were characters one could relate to in believable real life situations. Bradley capitalized on this with an emotional tug for the pain of being rejected while both kept their naughty secrets to themselves of each secretly desiring one another's bodies for hot mind blowing sex. With humorously witty dialogs and some very graphic sex the readers are in for a very decadent treat as Bradley packs a wallop with this extremely sensual well done read. Additionally when you couple all that with the bonus of a tender love story you end up with a very stimulating and satisfying story. Bottom line - This is definitely a lusty read that should get most libidos kick started into high gear!

I picked up this book at the bookstore knowing nothing about it. I was pleasantly surprised to find a campy mystery with compelling characters. I hope Ms. Wilbon will write more. I loved it!
Couldn't put this book down!!!.......2004-11-16
I had gotten a copy of this book back in September and didn't pick it up til this past Saturday. I could not put it down!!!
I am an avid reader of mystery both main stream and lesbian....I usually order five or six books at a time and read em all one after the other, some taking a mere few hours....
I think we have a winner here folks...I believe this is the authors first attempt at writing mystery, if so, it should be the first of many more to come, hopefully a series with these two incredible main characters..
This book should be on any reader of mystery, gay and straights, wish list and even more so for those who are familiar with the theatre. The author paints a vivid picture with every word she types. There are a host of characters in this book and the author has done a phenominal job at making the reader have the ability to see them basically come to life.
I absolutely love both main characters!
