Very Good Introductory Book.......2007-04-20

Like the previous reviewer I agree that the book does cover a fair breadth of material but not great detail. But, as a quick search will show, there are several hundred books on the subject. Most of those books are very technical and detailed unlike this book which is a great introduction to an incredibly complex industry. If your interested in getting more information about this field before jumping in this is a must have.

The book I chose to review was a book on Computer Forensics. Computer forensics is a very helpful easy to read book on investigative techniques for corporate managers or law enforcement. Unauthorized Internet access for employees could potentially grow into a festering tumor for many employers. This book details how someone with basic computer skills could investigate a workstation to see if anything malicious has been occurring.
The authors do a splendid job of offering real work examples to show the damage of inappropriate access and use by certain individuals. The use of the Internet and emails as a method of destruction is particularly alarming. Criminals and people with a penchant for malice are using emerging and established forms of communication to pervert the original intent of creators. The examples give snap shots into the complexity of the world of 21st century crimes.
The book is does go into detail about fraud on web based commerce. Thing such as ebay and bargain shopping web sites, seem noticeably missed in the context of crimes committed. The interesting example they use is the theft of website design from one website. Criminals could then use such designs to their own professional credit. It proceeds to tell the audience how to retrace the computer footprints to determine if designs were stolen.
It surveys overall Internet issues such as domain name services and email servers. The subject matter is daunting to say in the least, but the authors keep an individual grounded in the fact they are a beginner. It gives the feel of becoming a modern Dick Tracy or Sam Spade. The section also covers encrypted passwords, which are becoming more commonplace due to online commerce.
My main criticism would be the overall simplicity the authors present when entering such a field. It almost smacks of snake oil salesmen bartering cure alls. The work seems admirable but a very vast field, which encompasses everything from the intellectual property rights of web designers to human resource managers keeping tabs on company employees. Other than those points, I would say this is a must read for anyone who plans to enter businesses, which conduct online based exchanges of information or capital. It was a real experience to discover the depth of emerging criminal conduct with technology.

Shows its age, but good solid intro.......2007-02-10

Being from 2002 this book is showing its age especially in discussions of firewall and server security issues. If you're just getting into the field, I would recommend finding an update reference. That said, if you can pick this book up cheaply and have no background in the field - it'll work for you. The book provides a fairly good groundwork of basic security concepts, risks, and terminology. Experienced users will want to look elsewhere, but for beginners wanting to get a grasp on the field this is just right.

I have witnessed the proliferation of data networks over last fifteen years during which time
network security has grown to multi-million dollar business. I have taught and consulted on
design and implementation of network security.In today's corporate and SOHO network, secuirty
is extremely critical to protect and safeguard data. Firewall technology provides a defense
mechanism against unautorized access to data networks. This textbook provides a comprehensive
treatment of firewall from introduction to management and advanced configuration. The appendix
has a list of current firewall vendors that should be of extreme helpful to any reader. I would
highly recommend this text to anyone before they decide to purchase firewall to secure their network.

John Vacca starts with installation and setup and then moves into implementing and maintance. Along the way many real life experiences are used as examples. Having worked in the computer network/security field for the last 16 years, I found this book to contain most everything you need to have a working knowledge of firewalls. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that needs to come up to speed quickly and/or needs a refresher course. I find myself now to be in the later category but I wished this book had been written when I was first starting out as it would have saved me a ton of time.

Just what I needed.......2005-09-13

I fell into the category of "I know what a router is but I hope I never have to set one up." Our routers were handled by another talented memeber of our team. When she left, I gave it shot using some manuals we had from cisco and some other informatin passed down from project to project. Completely lost, I decided to start from the beginning. This text was just the ticket to get me started!

I highly recommend "Firewalls" by John Vacca. I found the book to be extremely helpfully in understanding the configuration and maintenance of firewalls as well as a great reference for the different types of security infrastructures that can be implemented using the technologies available today. "Firewalls" is an excellent knowledge base that I would recommend as a must read for anyone in the computer security and system administration fields.

This book is not a compendium of hacker techniques like Hacking Exposed or even a detailed description of any particular security technology such as firewalls or intrusion detection. This book provide a Security Administrator with the knowledge to implement security for their network and to define policies and procedures. It helps you ask the right questions to define your needs and gives hints and clues for what questions to ask when choosing a technology or vendor. It also contains tons of resources including addresses, phone numbers and URL's to contact many security vendors.

I am currently in my second semester in law school. This book was the only resource that I used when contacting schools for information and narrowing my choices. It had all of the information that I needed to get in touch with the schools. I was very concerned with the practical lawyering skills at each school and this was the ONLY source that had statistics on lawyering skills for each school. This book was RIGHT ON for the school that I am now attending.

lacked accuracy.......1999-10-08

The admissions standards potrayed in the book are the authors opinion. The book put out by the LSAC has most of the school's actual admission decisions.

A fairly interesting guide to most of the law schools in the.......1999-08-10

country. I'm not sure how often the passages on each schools are updated but I bought the 1999 edition and found it to be a refreshging departure from the usual bland statistics that are quoted in other books. It is nice to hear from students even though I do agree that the authors try to make every law school appealing. I also found the admissions section to be annoying because the authors seem to suggest that every law school is difficult to gain admission too. In conclusion, I certainly wouldn't use this book as my sole guide to law schools but I think that it is a nice compliment to the ABA book.

For attempting to achieve the impossible, it's not bad........1999-04-29

Lets set something straight. You can't rank the intangible; you can't rank law schools. But considering the huge controversy over whether law schools can or should be ranked, the guide is worthy of consideration simply because of its bold attempt to do so. Each law school is portrayed in a pleasant light, and the guide bases much of its analyses on direct quotes from the students. Gone from the 1999 edition is the Gourman Report Rating, which helps eliminate the temptation of ranking law schools arbitrarily. The guide also reads easily and contains subtle humor, making for an enjoyable reading experience. Its dry remarks about the admissions process at Stanford are particularly memorable. But the excitement ends there. You will quickly find that the guide changes little from year to year. Thus, one guide should last you for awhile. What is also lacking is an honest, direct criticism of each school's law program. Perhaps this cannot be done, given the limited amount of information with which the authors must work. This again points to the fact that it's impossible to truly measure a law school without having been there - and even then, how can you compare such an experience with another law school?

So take it for what it's worth. Viewed together with other law school materials, "The Best Law Schools" should strike you as one of the more entertaining guides.

One of the worst books on law schools on the market.......1998-11-18

I was fairly impressed when I read last year's edition of this book, although I felt that the authors tried too hard to portray every school in the best light, while hardly touching on the weaknesses of the schools. The commentary on the schools is hardly honest. What us future law students need is a book that will give honest reviews AND that is updated every year. After I bought this year's edition of the book, I was disappointed (and a little p.o.'d) to see that the school commentaries were EXACTLY the same as last year's edition. Do they think we're stupid? How can a new edition come out without updating the commentaries on the schools? Don't waste your money on this book...save it for applications!

Description:
Atmospherically derived surface films that cover impervious surfaces in cities, have areas comparable to that of atmospheric particulate matter (PM). The films compete with PM for sorption of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds and alter the functionality of urban surfaces. The determination of surface-film composition is therefore vital to understanding their role in mediating chemical fate and transport within cities. Here, we show the composition of urban surface films collected from windows in downtown Toronto (Ontario, Canada) to be comprised of ~94% inorganic compounds of which 8% are sulfate, 7% nitrate and 18% metals. Approximately 5% of the urban film mass is organic carbon, with ~35% of the organic carbon mass corresponding to carbohydrates, ~35% aliphatics, ~20% aromatics and ~10% carbonyls. The composition of surface films differs significantly from that of PM, suggesting differential accumulation, depositional degradation, and/or processes within films differing from those affecting PM. A rigid polymeric component comprising a small fraction of the organic carbon was also found, which may suggest direct deposition from environmental sources, or possible secondary in situ reactions within the film. Here, we suggest a potential mechanism for the oxidation of surface films to form organic polymers via radical initiation processes. Thus, the composition of surface films has important implications for chemical fate of contaminants within cities and presents a significant aspect of contaminant uptake that has not been considered in many air-quality models.
