Book Description
Do have a ton of VHS tapes that are collecting dust? Are you worried that your memories are going to disolve as the years pile on to the quality of your tapes? Using a step-by-step approach, this book focuses on how the average home user can convert their existing home movies to a digital medium. This book seeks the "ease of use" appeal of the DVD/VCR by applying it to the typical home computer, and to allow you to not think twice about using your computer to extend the capabilities of your DVD. It recognizes the distinction between a computer as a consumer product versus the ease of use of a typical home appliance, such as a VCR or DVD player, and tries to bridge that gap. Put simply, the goal of the book, then, is on the newly-created DVD: the computer is only the mechanism at which to arrive at this goal. It assists you in conducting an inventory of your existing hardware (Does your computer have a DVD burner? What video editing software might already be included on your computer?), and serves as a guide to your purchase of any required equipment (external conversion device, external DVD burner, etc.). This book skillfully guides you from the beginning step to the final step of bringing your "VHS memories" into the digital age-knowledge that is going to become more and more crucial as DVDs become the average-home norm.

Book Description
This book addresses one of the key features of contemporary government policy: how to integrate the economic role of agriculture with the societal role of the rural environment. Historical agricultural policy has focussed on encouraging production while protecting farmers from market risk. However production surpluses combined with growing concern over the environmental impacts of intensive agriculture has led to policy changes, which have exposed farmers to more market risk and required them to take account of their impact on the environment. For the first time this book brings these developing policy issues together with a comprehensive consideration of both theoretical and empirical aspects. The first part of the book contains a set of six theoretical contributions to the economics of the agri-environment, including consideration of the associated policy implications. Building on this theoretical base, the second part contains four international case studies of agri-environmental policy. All the authors are well-known experts in their field, and the original material contained in this book should be of interest to academic agricultural and environmental economists, postgraduate students, and policymakers.

Book Description
Pesticides continue to be a major means of controlling pests and diseases of crops and have made a major contribution to increasing the world's food production. Despite the problem of developing pest and disease resistance to certain pesticides, and public concern about their indiscriminate use and side effects, they are likely to remain the basis of integrated pest management programs. However, as this book seeks to demonstrate, there is scope to improve both the safety and efficiency of crop protection methods. The emphasis of the book is on methods of assessment and on application techniques of particular categories of crops. Written by leading authorities from Europe and North America, the book provides detailed reviews of relevant topics. It is essential reading for all researchers, advanced students and professionals concerned with crop protection, whether from the disciplines of entomology, plant pathology, weed science or agricultural engineering.

Book Description
This readable text represents a much needed synthesis of ecological insight into animal behavior. The field of behavioral ecology is relatively new, having evolved from a combination of classical ethology, as developed by Lorenz and Tinbergen, and population ecology. Now for the first time, a single author integrates the vast literature on animal ecology and behavior into a conceptual whole.
Exploring the theme of resource acquisitions, Morse combines the comparative approach to biology with models based on evolutionary theory. Secondary consequences of sexual selection and other selective pressures are considered in detail. Discussion of interspecific interactions and constraints is especially rich, as is the treatment of foraging theory, kinship theory, habitat selection and predator avoidance. Perhaps the book's greatest achievement, however, is its unparalleled ecological and evolutionary analysis of individual differences.
Behavioral Mechanisms in Ecology will meet the teaching and reference needs of an extremely broad audience of professional biologists.

Book Description
The first book-length exploration of behavioral mechanisms in evolutionary ecology, this ambitious volume illuminates long-standing questions about cause-and-effect relations between an animal's behavior and its environment. By focusing on biological mechanisms—the sum of an animal's cognitive, neural, developmental, and hormonal processes—leading researchers demonstrate how the integrated study of animal physiology, cognitive processes, and social interaction can yield an enriched understanding of behavior.
With studies of species ranging from insects to primates, the contributors examine how various animals identify and use environmental resources and deal with ecological constraints, as well as the roles of learning, communication, and cognitive aspects of social interaction in behavioral evolution. Taken together, the chapters demonstrate how the study of internal mechanistic foundations of behavior in relation to their ecological and evolutionary contexts and outcomes provides valuable insight into such behaviors as predation, mating, and dispersal.
Behavioral Mechanisms in Evolutionary Ecology shows how a mechanistic approach unites various levels of biological organization to provide a broader understanding of the biological bases of behavioral evolution.

Description:
Fishing disturbance can have indirect negative effects on animal behavior and survival, but receives little attention compared to measures of direct fisheries extraction. We quantified changes in the density of Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus when exposed to experimental human disturbance and injury typical of sport-diver harvest attempts in the field. A complementary study in a large seawater arena quantified lobster sheltering behavior and survival when exposed to the single and combined effects of human disturbance and triggerfish Balistes capriscus predators. Human disturbance and injury of lobsters in the field caused lobsters to emigrate from shelters that had been typically occupied over successive days. Similarly, both the presence of triggerfish predators and human disturbance promoted decreased lobster shelter fidelity to individual shelters in the arena. Overall shelter use and gregariousness increased in the presence of natural triggerfish predators but not as a function of human disturbance. Decreased shelter use and gregariousness by lobsters when exposed to human disturbance may have contributed to their decreased survival when exposed simultaneously to triggerfish. These results highlight how human disturbance and injury of lobsters can alter their behavior and reduce subsequent survival in the presence of their natural predators, and illustrate the need to incorporate the negative effects of sport-divers into models that estimate population demographic rates.

Book Description
Following in the tradition of the "System of Mineralogy" introduced by Wiley in 1837, this one-of-a-kind reference brings mineralogy into the 21st century. It describes all of the over 3700 recognized mineral species. New features include emphasis on mineral structure, presenting descriptions of all the important species. New specially commissioned structure diagrams describe all the important mineral groups. All homologous species are classified and all polymorphic forms identified. Compact and convenient in one volume, it offers exceptional coverage on where minerals can be found and accurate, up-to-date references.
Customer Reviews:
Desperately needs larger font and photos........2006-06-24
I am a geologist, but for heaven's sake, pics at least as good as a cheap field guide would be in order, especially for some of the more unusual minerals. Would also love to see some of the zillions of examples of granites that you can find at your average kitchen type granite center. The geology though is good, just a bit dry.
Do yourself a favor - don't buy this book.......2004-05-06
I think the Danas would be embarrassed if they lived to see their name on the cover of this book - probably the worst compendium of mineralogical data in the history of science. Here, inaccuracies and errors are the norm rather than exception, and the quality of print and paper are no match even to a circa-1900 missionary's Bible. Sloppy sources like this one do more harm than good by perpetuating errors and introducing new ones, so do yourself a favor and spend your hard-earned $350 on something else.
Long-awaited reference needs work.......2000-09-01
As a professional geologist, I use this reference often but I have found numerous errors. An example is that the mineral Pentlandite, an important ore of nickel, is not listed in the index. A German website is compiling an errata list on this book and it is many pages long of spelling, locality, formulae and indices errors. Other complaints are: The information concerning the economic use of the minerals is too sketchy and incomplete; and the page paper is too thin and fragile.
Comprehensive, essential mineral species reference.......1999-08-07
I use the book almost daily while working on a large mineral collection. It is up to date and comprehensive with valuable references to localities. The book is fragile with thin pages so must be used with care. It should be published as a CD ROM.
Is the publisher nuts?.......1999-07-12
I can't believe that John Wiley & Sons (the publisher) actually tries to sell this book as "compact". It's 1100 pages! The Peterson Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals is a much better "compact" guide. This thing should really be on CD-ROM.
Book Description
The successful calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions is one of the main achievements of theoretical physics over the last quarter-century. This was achieved through the use of scaling and field-theoretic techniques which have since become standard equipment in many areas of physics, especially quantum field theory. This book provides a thorough introduction to these techniques. Continuous phase transitions are introduced, then the necessary statistical mechanics is summarized, followed by standard models, some exact solutions and techniques for numerical simulations. The real-space renormalization group and mean-field theory are then explained and illustrated. The final chapters cover the Landau-Ginzburg model, from physical motivation, through diagrammatic perturbation theory and renormalization to the renormalization group and the calculation of critical exponents above and below the critical temperature.
Customer Reviews:
A nice presentation of the field-theoretic version of RG.......2000-06-01
This is a highly pedagogical book on the theory of critical phenomena and the renormalization group (RG). Field-theoretic methods are introduced gradually, and the physics is always illustrated with well-chosen examples. Technical details are explained thoroughlly and oftentimes summarized in ``boxes'' which span most of the book. At the end of every chapter, a set of problems allows the reader to test his/her understanding of the subject matter, and solutions to the problems are provided at the end of the book. Two regrets though: (i) that the authors did not touch at all the (less rigorous) but highly intuitive and widely used momentum shell renormalization group technique; and (ii) that the treatment of two-dimensional systems and the Kosterlitz thouless transition is a little superficial. Apart from that, this book is just great. A very useful book.
Customer Reviews:
Fun read ... can so relate to much of Heather's unplanned situations!.......2006-10-24
I liked this book even better than the first one. (It's Never Too Late To Get A Life)
Once again, Angie gets involved in so much "stuff" by just living her normal life. (I can so relate.)
I giggled as soon as I read the symptoms her poor friends - all three of them (and her) - exhibited, knowing full-well what was going on.
The only complaint I have, is there was too much of a happy ending; that's all well and good, but it kinda detracted from the credibility and reality of the story.
I'm anxious to read book number 3, even though I rarely read Chick-Lit.
After attending Heather's work-shop at a Writer's Conference at Sac State last week-end, I was so impressed with the way she spoke and presented herself, I bought both of her books that are currently in print.
I'll be at her book #3 signing next month.
Boy, can I relate!.......2006-03-28
It was 2AM and my hot flashes combined with my very own "fur covered hot water bottle" were keeping me awake (OK, and maybe some insomnia) when I picked up this book. Thank goodness I didn't have to go to work the next day because I not only saw the sun come up but tore up my to-do list and just enjoyed the book. I was glad to hear that there would be one more....keep them coming!
lighthearted amusing romp .......2006-01-28
As she closes in on her fiftieth birthday, Angie is at the point of no return and needs help as she is behind on planning her daughter Jenna's wedding. She turns to her best friends, but soon worries about them as she realizes none are in a mental state to assist her; instead they need help. Marie's marriage with Jack appears over; grandmother Jess dates men younger than her children; and Gwen seems like an early Alzheimer's victim with no ability to recall anything which in turn has led to a lack of self confidence which in turn leadns to more forgetfulness.
She soon concludes that menopause has struck making her realize nature must take its course. At the same time, she wonders if menopause can be used as an alibi if she kills the bimbos dating her son and her former husband; they offer her help with the wedding, which means more work for her as these female morons have individual bra sizes greater than their combined IQ,.
In her second adventure to regain control of her life, Angie struggles with the upcoming nuptials of her daughter, but as she seeks help from her three amigas she deduces they each face big crises. Her pals were there for her when Bob dumped her (see IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET A LIFE) so Angie plans to reciprocate, find time to put on a wedding and cope without killing the double teaming bimbos. Though a serious undertone with the troubles facing the aging boomers, this is a lighthearted amusing romp starring a woman who struggles to regain control of her life at a time when everything seems out of control.
