4 out of 5 stars Good introductory survey to various technologies.......2007-09-25

The book serves its purpose of providing a introduction to the various technologies that make up data mining. There are three main topic sections. The first gives an overview of the technologies involved such as fuzzy logic, bayesian probability, and neural networks. The second topic area is more concentrated and focuses on how data mining works. This involves utilizing clustering, association, and classification of data. The final section covers advanced topics in web, spatial, and temporal mining. The only complaint that I would have is that most of the coverage at least in section one is cursory and one needs other reference books for serious work in the field. A very strong feature of the book is that pseudocode algorithms are offered in many sections.

5 out of 5 stars clarity in exposition.......2006-08-23

Dunham gives a clear explanation of the main ideas in data mining. It's a concise book, directed towards the researcher or programmer. Space considerations meant that some topics are only briefly but succinctly covered, like fuzzy logic.

More details are provided about neural networks, genetic algorithms and similarity measures. Bayesian classifications also get a good mention. Other classification measures involve distance-based methods to define clusters. For clustering, you should note that exactly what goes into a given cluster can be rather subjective. It could depend on your choice of metric.

There is a fair amount of maths. Accessible to someone with a couple of years of university level maths, especially involving linear algebra.

The section on Web mining is especially interesting. The Web is probably the largest database in the world. Certainly the most accessible. But with different characteristics from many other databases. Web data might be wrong, deliberately or otherwise. And some websites might be link farms, that try to pump up page rankings. Other databases simply don't have this concern about their contents. Dunham explains Google's PageRank and a competing idea from IBM.

The algorithms are given in pseudocode. Which should not be a problem to an experienced programmer. Translating these into your choice of language is (or at least it should be) a lesser conceptual task than understanding the methods themselves. Or devising new methods. The book also aids the latter. Dunham's descriptions of the overall logic behind each algorithm is a good lead into what is needed in construction new ones.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for those interested in Data Mining, Machine Learn.......2004-11-03

Currently I am taking a Machine Learning course. This book is really helpful and intuitive. My friends who are studying Bioinformatics also found it useful.

All algorithms are presented in pseudo-code.

                    Book Description

A century after Henri Bénard discovered cellular convective structures, thermal convection in fluid layers still remains a central subject in nonlinear physics. Within this framework, surface-tension-driven instabilities have increasingly been the subject of attention over the last few years, owing to the even greater variety of pattern and wave-forming phenomena observed in this situation. This book provides readers with a progressive and complete insight into this vast field, describing as it does a number of "first principle" analyses of realistic set-ups, including several physicochemical processes at interfaces. Nonetheless, much emphasis is placed on the generality of the results and methods used, by way of the detailed derivation and analysis of a number of generic nonlinear equations known to hold in many physical systems, even outside the realm of fluid mechanics.

The first introductory chapter describes nonlinear dissipative structures at a general level, with several examples of hydrodynamic instabilities in systems with interfaces. Chapter 2 contains a summary of the derivation of thermo-hydrodynamic equations, including boundary conditions prevailing at interfaces, while the third chapter is devoted to linear stability analyzes and identification of basic instability modes. The following two chapters deal with weakly nonlinear theories, both monotonic and oscillatory. Chapter 6 presents experimental and theoretical results on solitonic and shock-like surface waves, while Chapter 7 explores examples of multiple bifurcations. Finally, Chapter 8 presents recent results on strongly nonlinear surface-tension-driven convection and chaotic interfacial dynamics.

                    Book Description

The first half deals with the motion of a single particle under the influence of electronic and magnetic fields. The basic language of linear and circular accelerators is developed. The principle of phase stability is introduced along with phase oscillations in linear accelerators and synchrotrons. Presents a treatment of betatron oscillations followed by an excursion into nonlinear dynamics and its application to accelerators. The second half discusses intensity dependent effects, particularly space charge and coherent instabilities. Includes tables of parameters for a selection of accelerators which are used in the numerous problems provided at the end of each chapter.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction.......2000-05-18

This book is a superb introduction to the field of acclereator physics. Starting with a basic knowledge of relativity and E&M is all that is necessary. Edwards and Syphers do a great job of "building" an accelerator in their book and using operating parameters of real world accelerators (mostly the Tevatron) for their numerical examples.

My only complaint is that some of the problems could be worded more clearly and concisely

                    Book Description

There are more than ten thousand particle accelerators in the world from the linear accelerators used for cancer therapy in modern hospitals to the giant 'atom-smashers' at international particle physics laboratories used to unlock the secrets of creation. Many scientists and engineers spend their lives designing, constructing, and operating these machines - yet few universities include the subject of particle accelerators in their curricula. The few courses that do exist and the summer schools run by the big accelerator laboratories lack a simple introduction which covers the essentials of the subject for the many who need to learn how these machines work. This book fills that gap and takes the reader through each of the aspects of a modern accelerator giving enough information to unlock the door to the subject but does not overload the understanding with mathematics. Anyone with a general interest in modern technology based on a fascinating variety of physics and engineering will find much of interest in this book.

Very specialised book. Written mostly for engineers involved in designing accelerators, and graduate students in physics who might have experiments at an accelerator.

No abstruse theory here. A book for experimentalists. Wilson describes clearly the differences between cyclotrons and linear accelerators and synchrotrons. The advantages and disadvantages of each. With real life examples, like those at CERN (of course), and at SLAC and Fermilab.

It does seem that the baton is passing from the US in this field. The European scientists have somehow managed to keep their funding together, which Wilson praises. He undoubtedly help bring this about. Certainly, an impression from this book is that if you are starting out in experimental particle physics, you might do best to direct your efforts at CERN.

                      Book Description

The complex technology of particle accelerators is based upon a series of often rather simple physical concepts. This comprehensive introduction to the subject focuses on providing a deep physical understanding of these key ideas. The book surveys the many aspects of accelerator physics and not only explains how accelerators work, but also why the underlying physics leads to a particular choice of design or technique, and points out the limitations of the technology. The clear and thorough mathematical treatment always emphasizes the physical principles described by the equations, and includes a range of calculations which develop a genuine feeling for the quantities and concepts involved.

From the creator of the Rumpole stories—a novel of middle-class do-gooding gone awry

Fans of John Mortimer and his popular Rumpole mysteries will love Quite Honestly, a comedy filled with a delightful cast of characters and Mortimer's unique and entertaining take on a life of crime. Life couldn't be better for Lucinda Purefoy—college educated, with a steady boyfriend and a job offer in advertising. With all this good fortune, isn't it appropriate for her to give something back to society? Armed with only good intentions, she joins Social Carers, Reformers and Praeceptors (SCRAP, for short), a misguided organization that recruits women to becomes guides, philosophers, and friends to ex-convicts coming out of prison. Once she meets her charge, Terry Keegan, the ensuing hilarity and mishaps produce a signature Mortimer tale, full of wit and surprise.

Young Lucinda Purefoy wants to do good. To that end she gets involved with an organization that helps convicts when they get out of prison. What happens when Lucinda is assigned her ex-con leads to a bunch of adventures that turns do-gooderism on its head. Mortimer is at his best in this wryly witty look at liberalism at work. What's funniest is that Mortimer is poking fun at his own kind. A delightful read in every way.

How does John Mortimer do it? Everything I read by him is so consistent, so witty, so darn good! I have read and reread the famous Rumpole books, and I love them dearly, but I also apreciate the brilliance of his pen in his non-Rumpole works such as this unpredictable and funny novel of love and crime. As is often the case in his work, Mortimer plays with the concepts of justice, crime, right and wrong, and the result is a delight. It is the story of a see-saw; a woman stands clearly on the side of virtue, and a young man on the side of vice, however the author slowly causes them to slide gracefully towards their oppostie extremes. While this is going on, the feeling of love rears its ugly face, and nothing seems to make sense anymore.
I strongly recommend this delightfully daffy meditation on crime and virtue.

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't read the book please don't read any further in this review or it will spoil the story for you.

That said, is anyone else out there surprised by this book? John Mortimer, the author, spent much of his career in law defending pornographers, and his delightful Rumpole series in book and on TV portrayed criminals as charming, nonviolent people you might like to have to tea. So long as you locked up the silver first.

But in "Quite Honestly" the sweet liberal Anglican bishop is not a bit sickened by his daughter's descent into crime. On the contrary, he rather preens about it. It adds to his status as a leftist. Nor can his daughter think of any reason not to swipe a former lover's hugely valuable painting so long as it adds to her excitement.

There is nothing charming about this at all. It's really quite revolting, quite honestly.

So, what do you think? Is Mortimer still unable to think there might be something wrong about crime, or does this book indicate there may be a line in the sand for him somewhere?

This is a love story without imagery depictions of gnarly positions written beautifully by Mr. Mortimer. Lucy wants to do some good in this world so she volunteers to be a reformer to Terry who has just been released from prison. Terry is not that easy to change therefore Lucy faces a big challenge in front of her. When push comes to shove Lucy perseveres; she is the daughter of a bishop. A lot of eccentric characters make up Mr. Mortimer's tale. The dialogues are funny. Each chapter is told from Lucy's point of view or Terry's side of an experience. The language is particularly stunning and swift. With Mr. Mortimer's knowledge of British law and order, and its justice system, his narration is tremendously exciting especially that he adds an extraordinary sense of humor into looking at situations. From the first page to the last this book is wonderful to read.

Quite frankly, I expected this to be a continuation of the elder statesman's remembrances. In 'Where There's A Will,' which I got from the library and had much trouble understanding, he had the old man's encumbrance of honestly remembering things as they were. You have to be British to understand their 'take' on a will. Some years ago, I typed my husband's 'memoirs' which he distributed to his kinfolk. I did a bit of editing and he acquiesed, after saying "we didn't talk that way." I saw that an old man does not remember things the way they actually happened. I have been accused of such, but I do and always did have a good memory.

He uses the 'he-said, she-said' approach to this new novel. In 2002, I wrote a short novel using actual emails to and from which was to be titled "He Said, She Said" but, alas, it is somewhere hidden among my souvenirs as I do not know how to get published. It was a good love story.

John Mortimer wrote PARADISE POSTPONED (he didn't mean Hawaii) and the Rumpole novels. This one has a ways to go to even be compared with his earlier works.
