I found this book to be one of the best step by step guide for application to focus organization.
It takes technical approach and merges it with organizational thoughts to guide actionable results.
For anyone doing Balanced Scorecard, this is one of the best step by step guide that addresses strategy from the holistic and bottoms up approach.
A must read for senior management.

Not so good for novice.......2006-03-21

Probably the book is good for the experienced, but not so good for beginners like me. Although it addresses the questions like "what BSC is", I failed to get a clear picture of the art, and I'm waiting for some other books on the topic from Amazon.

Anyway, "essentials" are not introduction. To the title of this book, it's especially true.

Cuts to the chase - practical approach.......2004-06-23

I've read a number of BSC books, from Kaplan & Norton's original classic, to later works, and this is one of the very few that goes into practical implementation and management of a balanced scorecard.

What makes this book better than the others I've read is the way the author points out the pitfalls as well as the advantages of implementing and using this tool. He is objective and, more importantly, experienced, which is evidenced by how he places the BSC in context. This context is shown in the gap he uncovers between strategic themes, mission/vision/values, competencies, and purpose, and initiatives, objectives, measures and targets. The BSC fills that gap - if properly done and all of the key factors are understood.

I liked the way this book uncovers subtle key factors, such as the differences between strategy and operational effectiveness (often mistakenly viewed as the same thing), and what you should and should not be measuring. I also liked the way strategic themes were defined as a concept, as well as the use of tool called a paradox map to verify the alignment of tasks to strategy.

The bulk (and value) of this book is the implementation plan, which is governed by six critical success factors necessary to implement a BSC. It is here that the book shines because the implementation is laid out as a project (in fact, one of the six CSFs is to treat the implementation as a project), and is achievable with no non-value added steps.

If you want to gain an objective view of balanced scorecards and their value, and a pragmatic approach to implementing one, this book is the one I recommend.

This research monograph offers an introduction to advanced quantum field theoretical techniques for many-particle systems beyond perturbation theory. Several schemes for resummation of the Feynman diagrams are described. The resulting approximations are especially well suited for strongly correlated fermion and boson systems.
Also considered is the crossover from BCS superconductivity to Bose--Einstein condensation in fermion systems with strong attractive interaction. In particular, a field theoretic formulation of "bosonization" is presented; it is published here for the first time. This method is applied to the fractional quantum Hall effect, to the Coulomb plasma, and to several exactly solvable models.

Wonderful Chick Lit.......2006-01-14

From the first sentence this book had me hooked. It is a romantic comedy and a mystery as well. The title: Leave It To Cleavage: An Uplifting Tale foreshadows the gentle humor within. The title refers to the heroine's family business, a lingerie company located in a small Georgia town. The company banner becomes: Ballantyne Bras, Home of Custom Cleavage: Creating The Perfect Bra One Stitch At A Time. This book does not take itself too seriously. There are many "creamy shoulders", "orbs", and robes that fall open. Still it is not crude eliminating some of the sexual detail found in many romances. There are no forced sex scenes between virginal girls and handsome heroes. The heroine, Miranda, is a strong beautiful woman with an MBA who is forced out of housewifely retirement and into running her family business. Tom, her cross dressing husband of fifteen years has ravaged the family business and left it in tatters. He leaves her abruptly with a curt note and no further explanation. The romance in the book occurs between the heroine and Blake, the handsome sexy police chief who suspects wrong doing in Tom's disappearance. Miranda conceals the fact that Tom has left her and taken their personal funds. Further, Tom has embezzeled Ballantyne company funds leaving the company in a precarious financial situation. She feels she must conceal Tom's sudden departure in order prevent panic, reinvent Ballantyne and save the company and the town. The town's largest employer is Ballantyne. There is an interesting side plot as well. Blake, the divorced police chief has trouble accepting the fact that his teenage daughter needs to grow up and seperate. He resists accepting the fact that she is a sexual being, the typical father daughter dilemma heightened by the fact that she is beautiful and very attractive to teenage boys. This is a beach book. I have given it five stars, because for its genre it is one of the better examples. This is not to be confused with great literature. Read this book for relief between reading the heavy hitters. Now I am ready for another heavy hitter.

Mystery, Romance and Lingerie.......2005-11-19

`Leave it to Cleavage' by Wendy Wax is the story of Miranda Smith who finds out that her husband wears ladies lingerie, is cheating on her , bankrupted her company, stole all her money and left town all on New Years Day. The local divorced hot police chief begins to investigate and then the story takes some wonderful exciting turns. Take a chance you will enjoy this quick fun read.

You won't be able to put it down!.......2005-08-11

After reading her husband Tom's kiss off letter, former beauty queen Miranda Smith discovers that he did more than desert her - he also drained their bank accounts, leaving her family owned company, Ballantyne Bras in financial ruin.

She also learns that Tom had a penchant for wearing the company garb, when she discovers a revealing photo of him in lingerie, along with a well-manicured female hand.

Miranda is forced to take over the company reigns to keep from going under, while trying to locate the cad. Telling the staff that he is on an extended buying trip, then trying to rebuild the business is her goal. But she does not count on Blake Summers, the sexy and suspicious Chief of Police being so interested in her plight.

The plot will hook you from page one and the chemistry between the two leads (as well as the comical predicament of a macho father reluctant to let his tomboy daughter grow up) will keep you pasted until the last page.

Rather cliche.......2005-05-30

I felt that the story was rather predictable. Any emotional moments were described by character's mouths opening and shutting. This description was used over and over to the point of annoyance. I began to visualize fish!

So many formulaic ideas.........The ML character kept being conveniently removed from the conflicts by getting allergic reactions, not once but TWICE, the girl whose father doesn't want guys to look at her (Tony Danza in every role he has ever played), the repeated use of "creamy shoulders" to describe Miranda.....(puke!)

Miranda's reasons for staying away from Blake were so flimsy and silly that I no longer cared if they got together or not. He certainly deserved a more appreciative woman, than one who would push him away for stupid reasons.

I was hoping that the identity of the mistress and the whereabouts of the estranged husband would have been more of a shocking twist.

The only thing that kept me reading to the end was to find out what happened to the missing husband. I think I wanted to see her get her revenge, but that never played out because he was found dead instead. Very disappointing.

The book was light and seemed to be perfect for one of those chick flicks that hook an audience with the sight of sexy lingerie but then have a very formulaic outcome. You know the kind....lots of build up and media hype, but then a short time at the box office.ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

intelligent and funny contemporary.......2004-11-28

Despite the title and the cartoon cover, this isn't a zany romantic comedy. It does
have gentle humor but don't look for a farce. I loved the subplot of the hero learning to
accept that his little girl is finally growing up.

Other things I liked: the heroine
does a realistic job of trying to turn her company around with a believable
plan and actually uses her intelligence and MBA to do it. She also uses
all the skills in presentation and self-marketing that she acquired as a
beauty pageant contestant, something that was never denigrated or
looked down upon by the author. I also liked that the heroine wanted a
bit of time to sort through her feelings about her marriage and didn't
immediately rush into a new relationship.

I liked that neither the hero nor heroine stood staring at the other
with drool running down their chins. And that the author didn't use
stupid gimmicks to separate them nor indulge in pointless and
inappropriately timed sex. Another plus is the fact that none of
the secondary characters are used solely for down-home cutsey
humor nor made to be two dimensional cardboard cutouts.

I did get a little tired of Miranda's initial crying jags but then her
husband had just left her after she'd learned that he had a thing
for ladies undergarments and had been having an affair on her
so I'll cut her some slack. This is Wax's second published book
and I'll be looking for more from her.
